In addition to subverting the conventions of greatest-hits discs--only 5 of these 17 tracks appear in the hit versions from Carpenter's studio albums--Party Doll does a better job of balancing the singer/songwriter's moods than any of her releases since 1992's Come On Come On. Here, upbeat celebrations such as "Down at the Twist and Shout" (included in a live Super Bowl take) and "I Feel Lucky" comfortably rub shoulders with the quietly sweet ("Dreamland," originally on an early-'90s various-artists set of lullabies) and brooding ("Stones in the Road") sides of Carpenter's work. Finally, her rendition of Mick Jagger's title tune hints that she has vital work yet to do. --Rickey Wright

The songs on this album range from down-home country (Shut Up and Kiss Me, I Feel Lucky) to introspective folky (Stones in the Road)to just plain good-time toe-tapping fun (Down at the Twist and Shout). My personal favorite is the lush and gorgeous 10,000 miles, a long, generous and heartfelt wave of emotion set to music. It is truly a masterwork, the kind of recording that only a very few of the most gifted artists could ever construct. This song alone puts Mary Chapin Carpenter into the elite league of All-Time Greats, be it folk or country. But there's much more! Ms Carpenter is not content to be a fabulous singer and songwriter; she's obviously compelled by a powerful innerspring of talent and humanity to new horizons of discovery for her -- and, because she is so perceptive and talented -- for us. This ain't cookie-cutter music, folks. This is the REAL thing. For anyone who's tired of playlists and me-too musicians, Mary Chapin Carpenter is a gust of the highly-charged clear breeze that follows a thunderstorm and lights up your lungs, eyes and heart -- and has echoes of the storm that preceded it. Are there gripes about this music? Only if you don't like emotion, feeling and involvement. This is class A-plus music top to bottom, from an A-class artist. Party Doll was my first CD from this brilliant musician, but I'm rapidly buying the rest of her collection, and haven't been disappointed yet. I doubt that you'll be either. Love you, Mary.

I was only casually aquainted with Mary Chapin Carpenter's music before picking up this album. The hits I knew were all here, and so was a lot more material I have come to love as well. I was a bit leery that "Down at the Twist and Shout" was a live version from the Super Bowl; this song was the primary reason I wanted a MCC album, and I was concerned a live version recorded in a stadium during the Super Bowl might be of inferior recording quality. But I needn't have worried, the sound is great, and the performance is energetic and fun, with a verse in Creole thrown in for good measure. "This Shirt" is probably my favorite track I was unfamiliar with, but the entire album is quality; there are very few 17-track albums by any artist where I can say I enjoyed every song. I now look forward to exploring her original albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for an introduction to this great artist.

My husband was looking for Cotton Eyed Joe and found it on this mix. He also found a lot of other songs from our past in there. Our 13 and 14 year old also got a kick out the whole thing.

This is indeed a couple of great discs. Masterbeat once again delivers what we have become accostumed to. From the opening track of CD 1 to the closinf track of CD 2, it is one great track after another. This is going to be one of the hottest discs of the summer. The mixing is flawless, and so is the selection of songs. Some will defenitly become club classics.
So lather up, press play and enjoy yourself...

Blue Water opens the disc, and is definitely one of those hi nrg funk vocal house tracks that makes you feel like you should be dancing in the bright sunlight. The track reminds me of something Kylie Minogue would record. It's followed immediately by a much darker track, Peter Rauhofer's elusive mix of How Would U Feel, coming in at a good seven minutes long. Jill Scott offers diva vocal, Robbie Rivera's club hit is a blend of house music with an alternative rock vocal edge-great track. From there, it's a string of peak hour diva anthems that pack a punch, including RuPaul taking on a house classic in an incredible hard dub. And disc 2 is virtually flawless, with one peak hour diva anthem after another. Track times are:

This dance music for youngsters goes right along with the animal biology as 'Bunny Hop,' 'Alley Cat' 'Chicken Dance' -- all are named after animals. I missed out on the Chicken Dance, but I understand that it was very popular at the 1982 World's Fair. I did enjoy 'Hokey Pokey' and Al Gore actually did the 'Macarena' on television. 'Ballin' the Jack' gets your heart and energy pumping. These are not what you might hear on radio, as we tend to listen to the music which spoke to us during our growing-up period of life. To watch people my age and ten-twenty years younger trying to mimic the words to the songs I loved makes me want to sit tight and be quiet. We outgrow our teen years when it was cute to act silly, but white hair and 60s, 70s, 80s just don't jive. I missed the 60s except for Barry White and that type. Folk songs were not my cup of tea, either. This selection of dance songs is old fashioned for today's youth, but reminiscent of other ages for the older group of music lovers.

I bought this disc (from another retailer) and it was not what I expected. These certainly aren't the versions that were made famous. In particular, I wanted the Club Med "Hands Up!" song, or something close. The version on this disc sounds more like "Easy Listening" than dance music. Probably great for a more subdued party atmosphere... or in case you own a chain of elevators.

    This is a fun cd, from surf classics like The Beach Boys "I Get Around" and "Surf City " by Jan & Dean to smooth contemporary standards like "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. A great mixture of songs for summer that's perfect to play for your beach parties. This one is going into my car for trips to the beach!
