Start with the Meters, whose hard funk is so efficient there's not a wasted note or out-of-sync beat. Add producer Allen Toussaint's wonderful vocal and horn arrangements. Top them off with seven Rebennack originals plus four well-chosen covers, and you have an album that seemed to arrive out of nowhere at the time of its original 1973 release. It still sounds garden-fresh today, not just the monster hits, "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Such a Night," but also the chain-gang funk of "Same Old Same Old," the verbal insults of "Qualified," even the second-line soul of "Shoo Fly Marches On." The closest thing to a weak link is "Peace Brother Peace," in which Rebennack anoints himself the Dr. Feelgood of love and happiness. But the Meters sound as if they believe every word he's singing, so who are we to argue? --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
DR. JOHN WAS DEFINITELY IN THE RIGHT PLACE WHEN THIS ALBUM WAS RELEASED IN 1973........2007-04-11
I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "DR. JOHN - IN THE RIGHT PLACE" by one of Rock's most legendary charismatic artists ever. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of New Orleans, Louisiana's pride and joy's, DR. JOHN. "IN THE RIGHT PLACE" was originally released in 1973 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Atco Records label which is a division of Atlantic Records and is a Time Warner Communications Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
DR. JOHN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for giving us perhaps, the hardest Funk music ever. Mac Rebennack would be known as a renowned Blues Pianist with a lovable rough and rugged growl of a voice. When "The Night Tripper'" or "The Good Doctor" whose real name is Mac Rebennack came on the music scene in the late 60's, it was clear and obvious that DR. JOHN was going to advance Funk music to the next level that had begun with previous contemporary artists such as THE LATE GODFATHER OF SOUL, MR. JAMES BROWN, IKE AND TINA TURNER, THE ISLEY BROTHERS AND SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. DR. JOHN would forever be known for fusing New Orleans R&B, Rock and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own special blend and brand of hard Funk "Voodoo" music. Who would have believed that when DR. JOHN when into the recording studio and recorded this album in 1972-73 that he would evolve from the studio and hand in to Atlantic Records one of the band's as well as one of Rock's greatest masterpiece albums ever. In my opinion, "IN THE RIGHT PLACE" is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer craftfully skilled genius of a true musical mastermind. This legendary masterpiece album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time.
And now it is time to let the smooth hard Funk Rock music of DR. JOHN to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. This legendary masterpiece album begins with the forever blistering DR. JOHN trademark hard Funk Rocker "Right Place Wrong Time," the slow soothing Funkish Rocker "Same Old Same Old," the slow soulful and refreshing Funkish song "Just The Same," the breathtaking uplifting Funkish Rocker "Qualified," the incredible humorous sounding Funkish Rocker "Traveling Mood," the amazing Funkish "Peace Brother Peace," the powerful lyrical Funkish Rocker "Life," the beautiful and simple song "Such A Night," the slow slick and soulful Funkish "Shoo Fly Marches On," the slow and heartfelt Funkish song "I Been Hoodood" and the groundbreaking Funkish Rocker "Cold Cold Cold." May I also add that Rebennack's blistering lead vocals sounded so rough and rugged that his crispy growl's would have been heard all around the world and alerted every animal worldwide at the same time. Rebennack's lead vocals were red hot and on fire when he layed down the vocals during the recording of this album. In my opinion, in a way, Rebennack's vocals sounded a little like the late great Ray Charles doing an impersonation of Mick Jagger.
Overall, this is one great legendary masterpiece album worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a diehard DR. JOHN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not familiar with the sound and music of DR. JOHN, I would definitely begin my DR. JOHN collection by buying this album first. However, there are many DR. JOHN greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you make your decision as to which DR. JOHN album(s) is right for you. In my opinion, either way you choose, you will have made the right choice and you will not regret your decision nor will you ever be sorry that you purchased a DR. JOHN album. All of DR. JOHN'S albums are available either through Amazon com or Borders. This is one great album that no diehard music fan or devout music collector would want to be without. BUY IT, YOU'LL BE GLAD THAT YOU DID.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, DR. JOHN has continued to entertain audiences the world over up to this very day. With the recent hurricane disaster to hit New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina, Mac Rebennack has been very supportive and has donated lots of his time, effort and money to help restore New Orleans back into the beautiful Blues town that it has forever been known for. With this in mind, I guess it is safe to say that Mr. Rebennack is a true gentleman and that DR. JOHN has forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Mac. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. DR. JOHN RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Always the right time..........2007-03-13
This CD is funky throughout, with some slow gems in between. I got it for the title track & "Such a Night", since I am in love with "The Last Waltz" version, but the rest of the album is a joy to listen to. Great horns by the Meters & the soulful voice of The Doctor! Especially nice with the Summer coming along...
No Funkin' Around.......2006-02-25
Funk, in its purest form, is hard to come by these days. That's because we don't have the kind of wreckless visionaries that the 70s had, like Dr. John and George Clinton. These guys were so far gone into their music that they bordered on being parodies of themselves, and somehow that translated into the kind of raw and unprecedented energy that makes their music so saturated in what one would ideally define as 'funky'. Take Dr. John: the dude is basically the white George Clinton, with his crazy head dresses and honky tonk muppet voice. Put him in front of a piano, get the Meters to lay down the tightest funk grooves you've ever heard, and add producer Alain Toussaint's canjun roots and you've got an exceptionally enjoyable album in "In The Right Place". The music is uplifting and listenable; The Meters take the house down with some thick bass riffs, brilliantly arranged horns and tight-as-hell percussions. Dr. John wails like a drunken canjun cartoon character, which is such an endearing and appropriate compliment to this musical experience that you will not know how to listen to this kind of funk without a voice as original and funky as this.
While the entire album provides a consistent line-up of quality jams, the two stand-outs that have become two of Dr. John's greatest hits are "Right Place, Wrong Time" and "Such A Night". "Right Place, Wrong Time" would fill any dance floor with its danceability factor, while "Such A Night" is a kind of honky tonk interpretation of a faster-paced soul ballad, with great backing vocals and a nostalgic, Bugsy Malone-sounding keys section.
This album is a must-have for any self-respecting fan of the funk. Dr. John is a true pioneer in the genre and, while most of his work is worth owning, this is nonetheless one of his best albums to prove it.
Funky , the album's grooves are from New Orleans .......2005-09-02
Discover the different sort of attitude from down South .
The Doctor is here to help you....shake it .
This sort of music is unlike any you've heard before , unless you've been exposed to Harry Connick Jr's piano as well .
The music is varied and shows the Doctor's versatility as well as that of the great backing band , the Meters .
Another great record for a party .
This music is part of the heritage of America , as well as being extremely groovy !
dr. john's 'in the right place' for sure-in my top 10.......2001-01-22

Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02
Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.
Music Lovers.......2007-02-17
i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.
a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08
This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius, and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.
Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27
Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.
All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.
Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.
Nice sound.......2006-02-17
I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

Worshipper/PrayerMom.......2006-08-06
I love this album. I can feel the presence of God when I listen to it. "Highest Praise", "Right Place", and "Thank You" are songs that feed my soul. If you really enjoy vasting in the presence of God I recommend you buy this album. It's more than just the music, the words say things that I want to say to my Savior each day, if you don't know what to say or what to pray I recommend that you listen to "Thank You" and when you just want to worship, I recommend the "Highest Praise". The entire album is awesome even the Jazz inspired tune "We Have Come". God Bless you Pastor R. McKissick Jr. and continue to let the Lord use you. The anointing is flowing from the head to the beard, to the members of your choir, believe me, let there be no doubt in your mind THIS IS KINGDOM BUILDING MUSIC.
Get Your Praise and Worship on with Pastor Rudolph.......2006-02-05
"Thank You" so much Pastor Mckissick as this song sets the tome for the entire CD, letting you know how good the Lord truly is and giving him thanks. Then we get into "High and Lifted Up" with the Carribean beat. This CD will get definitely help you to get your praise on especailly with "The Highest Praise". Listen as Pastor Rudolph and the choir miniter to you. Your soul will be lifted.
Another Awesome and Anointed Collection.......2005-10-19
This is the third CD and each goes to a higher level. This is a very worshipful selection of songs. How can we not say "Thank You" each day to the One who is "High and Lifted Up"...that being the "Precious Jesus." When we are in His presence we are always in the "Right Place" to "Lift your Voices" because indeed "There is None Like You." For me the top selection is "The Highest Praise" which follows a very powerful Interlude by Pastor McKissick, Jr. This CD keeps me before the Lord in accordance with His Word..."I will praise the Lord at all times." This is another must-have CD. Looking for more next year from Pastor McKissick and the Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, Jacksonville, Florida.

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "IF YOU LIKE TO HEAR YOUR BLUES AT THE SAME DECIBEL LEVEL AS A DOG THIS IS THE CD FOR YOU!".......2007-01-31
If you're one of "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, you'll know that I love Otis, and he is one of my six all-time favorite electric blues guitarist's. My prior reviews of his CD's, all have exemplary reviews. But this CD, fails two of Shaq's critical tests. First, the volume and clarity of this CD is terrible. I had to turn up the sound on my stereo louder than on any prior reviewed CD. Second, there are a total of 10 songs on this CD, and the total running time of the entire CD is 40 minutes. So as Shaq always says: "You can't get da blues in 3-4 minutes. Summary: If you're the type of person who likes to turn your portable CD player up to it's highest volume, and sneak up behind someone you're stalking, and not have them know you're behind them, this is the CD for you! Playing this CD at its highest level won't bother the librarian, or your neighbors.
An Essential Blues Recording.......2007-01-01
Otis Rush is one of the greatest singers and guitarists in the history of the blues. "Right Place, Wrong Time" is his unmistakeable masterpiece, far surpassing the Cobra recordings, his initial reputation was built on, and setting a standard he unfortunately never quite reached again. Over ten songs (four of which are originals) he conveys a lifetime of sadness, pain and passion through his tasteful guitar playing and soulful singing. When he sings "they say there's someone for everybody/ Ooooh I wonder where in the world is the one for me," on the title track its the poetry of loneliness brought to life. The final song "Take a Look Behind" is one of the most moving songs about the regret over a life badly lived in all the blues. There isn't a dud on here though. Every track is a thing of beauty.
I first bought this album on vinyl in the 80s and nearly wore it out. The CD I replaced it with continues to get plenty of air time on my home stereo. No blues collection can be complete without this disk.
Right place, right time.......2006-12-11
I heard this record on the telly. Channel 18 it was, a public access outfit on Long Island who when The Simpsons aren't on are absolutely the best thing on the box. See, what they do is put out a round-the-clock bulletin board of upcoming community events but they back this up with entire albums, often double albums, chosen by the dudes what work there. Each record plays for a couple of days at a stretch too so you can miss it a bunch of times and still catch up. They've even got a screen with the date, time and temperature--as I said, prime time television. These old geezers are free to broadcast just about anything that takes their fancy and mostly it's not too crappy although once they played Hank Snow and I had to take up cycling just to get out of the house because really Hank Snow, I mean that sap's the Andrew Llyod Webber of country music, isn't he? I sent an e-mail to the guy in charge of this gig complementing him on their choice one night of early Charlie Parker--what I don't know about jazz could fill a warehouse but this bird is the spring in wintertime--and the felly wrote back an actual letter in which he described in the most amiable manner how they do things down at Four Village Studio. Tastes there run to older acoustic and electric blues, rhythm & blues, jazz and, like I said, lots of cowboys. Over the last several months as a for instance I've watched, usually from my bed, the following compact disks: Long John Hunter's Ride With Me, Texas blues tailor made for a Saturday afternoon. I own this record now on account of buying it there recently because it's just that good; Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding where he sings that song about Saint Augustine--as perfect a number as that man ever rolled. I love Dylan, his Chronicles are stupendously cranky and funny and I for one am eagerly awaiting volumes two and three. I didn't think much of David Crosby until I read this book but his crack after the Princeton debacle is a thing of beauty; A Junior Parker compilation which I'm pretty certain I remember not minding one bit; Celtic Solstice by Paul Winter and Friends, a processed slab of Irish cheese that made me want to fly into O'Hare International Airport and drink a lump of pints in The Green Potato; the first two albums by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, a double CD and Jehesius H. Horselips just a mongo kablammo twofer--red barn blues and on disk two the incomparable Elvin Bishop crooning some serious voodoo on Never Say No; and this record here by Otis Rush, searing big band electric blues, the perfect prescription for shutting up shop on a Sunday night. The thing about this record is that all the good bits--lead guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and brass--come through on their own but somehow stay together in a right snazzy arrangement. It's like one of those glass clocks you often find on mantlepieces where you can clearly see the whole gizmo actually ticking but in the wind up you still get the right time. I own this record now too so I do on account of it also is just that good.
a contrary vote.......2004-10-19
I'm sorry to be the sole dissenter, but this release simply doesn't have the burning intensity of Otis' older work. To have a good representative collection , get the Cobra stuff, and then skip all the way up to the later live recordings, like 'Tops'. Middle-aged Rush evolved into a better soloist, capable of sustaining long pieces that stayed interesting and exciting throughout. Everything in between is so-so.(ps; There's an industry rumor that Otis was angry about Doctor John hearing this title tune and stealing it, but if you listen to both tunes sharing the title "Right Place, Wrong Time", you'll hear absolutely nothing in common except the four words, and even then, not quite..surely Otis isn't trying to take credit for the old saying itself?)
Right Place, Right Disk.......2004-10-15
If Rush had only ever recorded this single disk his place as a Chicago Blues great would have been secured. Add to this his incomparable late 50's sides for Cobra and you have a selection of the greatest West Side recordings ever made.
'Right Place, Wrong Time', is quite simply the best straight blues recording made during the 1970's, bar none. Rush is on fire throughout, whether delivering wracked slow blues or up tempo shuuffles. He plays and sings with incredible passion and feeling throughout; constantly striving for the next lick or turn of phrase which might take these songs to a new level. The backing band are never fussy, the horn section restrained, the production sparse and tough.
Highlights include the brilliant original 'Right Place, Wrong Time' and a definitive reading of Albert King's (Lets have a) 'Natural Ball'. Rush makes 'Lonely Man' his own and manages to deliver 'Rainy Night In Georgia' as a first rate blues ballad.
These recordings carry none of the excesses that blight many of his later recordings, but rather capture Otis delivering at the very peak of his considerable powers.

Broadway veteran Liz Callaway (most famous for her five-year stint as Grizabella in Cats on Broadway in the late '90s) fills her second solo album with lesser-known tunes, a number of them covering moments in her career. Her lovely soprano can break your heart with the ballad "Since You Stayed Here" then thrill you with the showstopper "The Story Goes On" from Baby (which earned her a Tony nomination). The emotional heart of the album is "Meadowlark," Stephen Schwartz's wondrous tale of risk and heartbreak that proves a particularly glorious marriage with Callaway's voice. In a savvy bit of programming, that peak is followed by the deliciously langorous "Sleepy Man." Callaway's sister, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway, makes a guest appearance in Stephen Sondheim's powerful "Our Time," a teaser of the sisters' live collaboration. Of Varese Sarabande's many albums spotlighting Broadway singers, The Story Goes On is one of their absolute best. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Y'all are crazy!.......2006-11-03
The Billy Porter duet is one of the most unique and thrilling songs on the cd. What a fantastic re-invention of that song. And their voices by themselves and together are glorious. Its all personal taste and by no means is that the only good song. Its probably THE best solo cd by a broadway artist. Incredible!
Liz Callaway Goes On..........2006-05-02
Liz Callaway has one of the most enthralling voices around. Her voice is melodious and very soothing and especially shines in soft and subdued ballads. She doesn't have a big voice but she has an amazing range and sense of melody.
She opens the album with a strong rendition of "You There in the Back Row" a song I'm not familiar with but has grown to love. The next track "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair" lacks the spunk and bite that I think the song should have, and the arrangement felt out of place in the album.
She had a touching and moving rendition of `Since You Stayed Here". I'm not familiar with the musical Brownstone but this song made me want to check out the musical. It's about someone forced to become a stronger person after a breakup or some sort, that you wouldn't recognize it's the same person. I really love this song and Liz captured the strength as well as the sadness of the song.
Another standout is her now trademark version of "Meadowlark". The story of the meadowlark was a metaphor that convinced the character to the important decision she made in leaving her husband for another man. This is a really powerful song and truly Liz Callaway soared in this song. "Sleepy Man" was another notable track. This is probably the song that fits Liz Callaway's voice most perfectly. It was very sweet and really really soothing in the ears. This is one of my favorite tracks.
"Stop Time" is a song about the inexplicable combination of joy and sadness of watching your child grow up. It was a tender rendition that ends with a beautiful subdued last note. This woman knows how to end a song.
Once I got passed the cheesiness of the arrangement of "One Boy", I enjoyed it. It's old fashioned but it's still good. Liz then made an updated rendition of "The Story Goes On" from her show "Baby" This song was about a mother-to-be finally realizing the beauty and magic of carrying a child after she felt the child's first kick. I prefer the stronger arrangement of the song in this album compared to the Baby Cast Recording, but the innocence of that earlier rendition still resonates.
She ended the album with a beautiful rendition of "A Place Called Home". I first heard this song in one of Lea Salonga's concerts and I fell in love with this song. Her last note was very touching and melodiously and heartbreakingly romantic.
Grade= A
Liz Callaway SOARS!.......2005-06-27
Wow! I love this cd! I went to a camp in Decatur, Illinois called Showchoir Camps of America. One night, as our evening entertainment, she performed this entire album!! That afternoon Ms. Liz came for a question and answer session with Phil Reno. She is such a down to earth person and sooo very talented! At the concert, I started to cry! During one song, Ms. Liz forgot the words to a song ( actually, I forgot what the song was called!), so she just made up some words to it!! If you want a TRUELY talented performer, Liz Callaway is the one for you!
....Love this album too!.......2004-08-18
I love this album. There are a few songs I kinda skip, because it was just weird. That song being "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of my Hair", weird. I loved the duet "Where is Love" from the musical Oliver. "Stop,Time" from the musical BIG (grab your puffs!). I enjoyed the 50's sounding "One Boy!" from Bye,Bye Birdie. Liz has a wonderful range, and flattering childish tone to her voice, reaching notes that would take me years of training to ever reach again! She has complied all these exciting songs and ends the album with "A Place Called Home", from A Christmas Carol. I could never give her enough praise. If you like Strisand, and Sintra, you'll love her too! :-) Liz is always shinning when she sings! Enjoy!
Unknown Talent Sings Unknown and Known Broadway Songs.......2003-06-10
... I thought I recognized the voice but I couldn't quite place it. I finally realized that she was the singing voice of Anastacia in the animated movie. Meg Ryan was the speaking voice. Liz Callaway has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and also a very strong voice. I love her rendition of Knowing When to Leave/Promises, Promises by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Great arrangements. Dionne Warwick, who I am also a fan of covered Promises, and the Carpenters sang a version of Knowing When to Leave. I'm also a Carpenters' fan. On this album all the songs are Broadway. Many I hadn't heard before but love now due to Liz. The first song, You There in the Backrow is a tribute to fans of shows. "Watch me sing my song for you" the words go. Liz makes you want to jump to your feet. Liz does a rendition of I' Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific, rock version. I can't say that's my favorite, but favorite to one of my friends. Since You Stayed Here, another unknown song to me, is quiet and hauntingly beautiful. Bette Midler does a version of this I think on her CD with From a Distance. She sings a duet with her sister, Ann Hampton Callaway who sings on Sibling Revelry with Liz. Ann wrote and sang the theme from The Nanny. The song Liz and Callaway and here sister does is Our Time. It's also on Sibling Revelry. Great duet. One of my favorites on the CD is Marry Me a Little by Stephen Sondheim. The words are a plea to marry me, a little. The song is an almost a desperate plea to marry me but you don't have to make promises you don't want to, an open marriage? Make a few demands a few that I'm able to fulfill. She sings I'm ready. We won't have to give up a thing, we'll stay who we are the words say. Someone I'm Ready. I would give this song 5 stars on its own. It makes me cry because she sounds like she will settle but at the same time she wants the love fully. The arrngements on this album are unique. She sings I've Got the Sun in the Morning from Annie Get Your Gun jazzy. Most of the other songs on the album are not known by most people. I can only say that Liz makes you want to see these shows and she pulls you in. I think I've become her biggest fan. I'm a singer too. I could see myself singing with her. I have her The Beat Goes On album too with sixties hits. I hope that people will get to know her because if you haven't heard this or her voice, you are going to be deprived of a remarkale clear strong voice. Buy this. I promise you won't be sorry! One more addition, Meadowlark. Spectacular! The story tells of someone hesitating because the time wasn't right and she learns from the story to live your life, climb every mtn.

Album Description
Musically speaking, there are few events as highly anticipated as the venerable
Dr. John, performing "live" in New Orleans. Perhaps the greatest living musician from the Crescent City, the Doctor's hometown appearances always prove to be full-scale celebrations of New Orleans culture and people. Add Mardi Gras night at Tipitina's into the mix and the stage is set for that intangible X-factor to enter the musical equation. Proof of that resounds on,
Right Place, Right Time: Live At Tipitina's Mardi Gras '89, capturing the one and only New Orleans Night Tripper, Dr. John, on Mardi Gras night 1989 at the hallowed Big Easy music venue, Tipitina's.
Opening to the introduction: "Ladies and gentleman, Mardi Gras '89 here at Tipitina's, The High Priest, The Night Tripper, Dr. John!" The good Doctor blasts into the "jailbird beat" of
"Junco Partner." It's a full-tilt boogie based on Dr. John's "steady comin' at ya" piano. Joined by an all-star NoLa band, including Tommy Moran, David Barard, Herman Ernest III, Trazi Williams, Amadee Castanell and Charlie Miller, they follow with
"Renegade." The version is highlighted by a fiery Dr. John sermon. It's vintage Night Tripper.
Mardi Gras wouldn't be complete without voodoo.
"I Walk On Guilded Splinters" sees to that. The audience's elation is audible. As the evening proceeds, Dr. John keeps the music coming with stand-out numbers like
"Black Widow," "Kinfolks," "Let The Good Times Roll," and
"Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying." Tipitina's hits the stratosphere as Dr. John delivers rave-up renditions of the show stoppers,
"Wang Dang Doodle" and
"Such A Night." As the music fades, it's hard not to think of New Orleans in better days, but like a well-timed postcard from the past, Right Place, Right Time keeps the spirit of the magical city alive and well.
Customer Reviews:
RIght Place, Right Sound.......2006-05-10
Dr. John is at his best when he doing what he does best, being a barroom piano player. The sound here is fairly clean. His piano playing and the background musician is what makes this album works. It have energy and it is fun. It is very hard to listen to and not end up tapping your toes to the music. I am sure it will never show up on a list "to die for" or Music awards. It is what it is, a great piano player, playing.

"Right Place, Right Time" by Tomo Fujita.......2007-02-12
This is an instrumental piece and very guitar driven, still there is enough here for anyone to enjoy. Overall, I would say that this cd shows Tomo playing a bit more aggressively with more complex arrangements for the accompanists. The guitar lines flow as Tomo makes every note seem effortless regardless of the technical difficulty. I have always felt that making a piece seem easy is a hallmark of the accomplished player. Tomo's dynamics and tones are wonderful as we have come to expect. There is no doubt that this cd exhibits Tomo's growth as an artist and player.
Here is a breakdown, track by track:
1. Catty Woman - The cd starts off with a strong, up tempo and aggressive beginning. My favorite section comes in around 1:23 with an expressive and lyrical section which transitions back into the previous feel then really takes off under a minute later.
2. Confidence Cat II - A new take on one of my favorites. This piece is very funky and lays down the groove from the opening measure. Tomo is right in the pocket throughout.
3. Texas Heat - Yes, there is a real Texas feel here. This one could certainly be played in a Texas honky tonk with lots of smiling faces. Plenty of strat twang, but some sizzle as well. We all know Tomo enjoys SRV, but this piece showed there is more than a little bit of Texas style in his chops.
4. Sweet Home - Tomo slows it down a bit. This melodic track is laced with tasteful playing and sweet tones. You can easily appreciate the range of expression in Tomo's playing here. Very nice clean execution in a tune that is really breathing. My favorite section is the transition at 2:12.
5. Funky Thang - This one shows Tomo has a lot to his funky side and has more to show us. By the title, I was expected it to be on the "Just Funky" side, it turns out to be funky in a different vein. Tomo begins with a simple, repetitive lick and builds. It has a modern funk vibe.
6. Orange Juice & Vodka - A catchy riff followed by some serious stylings from guitarist Toshi Hiketa. Tomo shows how easily he melds with another guitarist. Some nice trading off here while the song flows.
7. Gogo - Tenor sax, trumpet and horns, anyone? After showing how he can fit in with another guitarist, Tomo jumps into this context just as seamlessly. Lots of cool stuff going on in this one from all involved.
8. Drive Me Nuts - Interesting title, huh? Tomo takes off from the beginning with another track that just builds and builds with a memorable riff floating from the forefront and into the background. Tomo explodes into a solo at 1:47 and just rips.
9. Twinkle Twinkle - For anyone who has not heard Tomo take a simple, familiar tune then drive it into uncharted territory, this will be a huge treat. Not so subtle are the underlying themes of his teaching philosophy while it is a whimsical and enjoyable selection for all.
10. Just Funky 2006 - Again a new edition of a Tomo classic. I always enjoy when Tomo plays with the arrangement of this tune as he often does in his DVDs. This version does not disappoint and provides a fitting and memorable ending to the cd. The horn and sax section is back adding some tasty textures to this tune.
There is a lot of attitude and complete immersion in each and every track. That is rare enough in a cd with similar tracks yet seldom pulled off with such diversity. Indeed, Tomo's enthusiasm comes across throughout as does his musicianship. As I mentioned, there were numerous other players on this cd. Each one executed their parts extremely well giving the feel of a tight and seasoned band.
For people who enjoy guitar to begin with, I know you will appreciate this cd. And, I think a lot of other people will, too. I highly recommend it.
Best Kept Secret in the World of Tasteful Blues-Fusion-Funk Guitar........2007-02-09
Tomo Fujita, a sought-after professor at Berklee, and a highly lauded player and teacher in his native Japan, puts together a well-produced and classy tour de force of an instrumental guitar album. His musicianship is world class, and his unique style incorporates many of his influences including but not limited to: B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Prince, John Mayer, etc.
Though Tomo is known for his clean style of playing, and that can be had in abundance on this album, he definitely spices things up with a variety of tones, arrangements, and effects this time around. It should be noted that the other contributing musicians make for a tight band.
Fans of the blues, jazz, and funk should appreciate this well-rounded guitar driven offering, but anyone who likes music can enjoy. This is not mindless noodling, fretboard gymnastics, or speed for speed's sake. This is melodic, tasteful, and accomplished playing. Highly recommended.

Eloquent, Explosive, Epic. A Wondeful Presentation........2007-05-15
(Edited from earlier work, copyright 2007 Michael F. Hopkins)
For the deeply spirited Jay Hoggard, this special album is a
signature statement in a distinguished career filled with many
such bright moments.
This, however, is even more. THE RIGHT PLACE bears the burning
urgency of a master artist taking charge of his expression, a
musician of great Faith and touching Joy making the most joyful
of noises to uplift the heart and the mind. The debut album for
the vibraphone master's own JHVM Recordings, THE RIGHT PLACE
sings and swings with gleeful authority bearing a calm, winning
impact.
A rhapsodic travelog of the Black aesthetic at its globespanning
finest, Hoggard and friends weave a potent dance which takes us
from tropic mist and sprawling veldt, through the challenge of
urban prance and the finely measured breath of coming Home.
The malleteer is joined by stalwart colleagues here. The
multifaceted Dwight Andrews is outstanding on reeds and flute,
as Belden Bullock on bass provides a splendid discourse in the
art of finger-talking. Legendary pianist Hilton Ruiz can be
heard on a delightful tear, as percussion wonder Pheeroan
AkLaff makes tempo-juggling merry amidst a team of percussion
wizards (Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng on donna and congas, Asher
De Lerme on timbales, bata and guiro).
The ever-ready, always steady James Weidman kindles a hearty
flame on piano and organ, a persistent excellence which always
makes his work stand out with conviction. Engineer Alec Head
delivers the whole sound of this bountiful music with exceptional
care and heightened grace.
Through compositional talespinning, playful daring and a determined
focus which is second to none, the vibraphonist radiates the sheer
fun and precious need of creativity as a human calling. Too, with
reflections upon the work of Tito Puente as well as Bobby Hutcherson,
Hoggard's own nimble malletry strikes resonant summons from the
marimba, stirring Sun to rise and twilight to prepare devout
enchantment to fortify the soul..
JHVM Recordings mark a fresh chapter in the ongoing tale of a great
artist. SONGS OF SPIRITUAL LOVE and SWING 'EM GATES show
the malleteer's vision and drive to be as powerful and magnificent
as ever.
Meanwhile, from 2003, discover the intimate might and majesty
of this master musician, and thrill in this landmark statement
of cultural splendor.
Enjoy the loving welcome of THE RIGHT PLACE.

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.
