Customer Reviews:
okay.......2007-01-05
I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.
A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.
Highly recommended.
First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20
I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

Metropolitan Opera soprano Heidi Grant Murphy and her husband, the pianist and conductor Kevin Murphy (also of the Met), conceived the concept for this recording with guidance from their friend and Met colleague, Ken Noda. The intent was to convey a feeling of infinite tranquillity, reverie, dreaminess, and tenderness. Though the disk's packaging--including its title--may strike some as slightly drippy, the recording deserves high praise on musical grounds. The selection of repertoire is excellent, and as a result, the disk's overall feeling is one of serene continuity. As interpreter, Heidi Grant Murphy brings out the many subtly-shaded moods in this music, and her voice is stunning without calling undue attention to itself. It is by turns quiet, close, tender, and yielding. It's a special disk to have. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Truly lovely.......2006-08-23
Ms. Grant Murphy has an exquisitely tuned and toned soprano, and her husband, Mr. Murphy, accompanies and supports with great delicacy and musicality. The selections are wide-ranging and eclectic, and I found most of the disc utterly entrancing. Heidi Grant Murphy's voice is clear, high, pure and uniquely beautiful in timbre. I had the great pleasure of hearing her live in concert in 2005 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, in Mahler, and on the strength of that decided to purchase this CD. If pressed to find what I considered to be a weak spot, I would have to say that I did not find Ms. Grant Murphy's voice particularly suited to "O quand je dors", although the duo performance of that song was as thoroughly musically informed and well-conceived as any of the other selections included. I think this is quite a remarkable collection and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of art song.
Brilliant!.......2003-12-30
Seems like Laura, who gave a terrible review, is a bit jealous! She must have been competing with Heidi and was not picked. It is obvious she is terribly resentful of Heidi's beautiful voice and talent. Heidi's voice is angelic and peaceful. I highly reccommend all of her CD's. Her husband Kevin and she make a great pair and their talents are amazing! Keep them coming Heidi. As for you Laura, keep trying. Besides the attitude and resntment, you must not have the talent you thought you possessed.
Not worth the money!.......2000-11-26
Looking at the high praise this mediocre recording receives in the other reviews, I'm wondering whether I listened to the same one. I bought this recording with high hopes, but having never listened to her voice - I regret it. The material she performs is good (if somewhat standard), but her voice is really...weird. It has a Beverly Sills (past the golden years) wobble in it that she seems to think is a healthy vibrato. I know she was pulled out of Indiana U early for a Met contract, and I think they did her a disservice - her technique is horrible. She does have good control of her pianissimi, but as a whole, the recording is most disappointing. In the Rach, her fortes are frighteningly bad, almost embarassing. How does this woman sing at the met?
A Beautiful Voice.......2000-02-25
Heidi Garant Murphy is an exceptional singer. The magical tone of her voice is matched by intelligent musicianship. I recently (Feb 10) saw her as Sophie in Der Rosenkvalier at the Met. A wonderful performance, in which she was clearly the interpreter closest to what I think Strauss had in mind. She also had the most beautiful voice (although Fleming was also in excellent voice) This disc is another wonderful example or her singing. Kevin Murphy, who is her husband, provides a sensitive piano accompaniment. This disk is not background music. The sensitive interpretations require your complete attention to be appreciated.
Buy!.......2000-02-15
Judging from most reviews in the classical genre, I am not qualified to evaluate Twilight & Innocence for its technical merits, but let me say that Heidi Grant Murphy has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. The selections, and lovely piano accompaniment are a perfect showcase for her talent. I've worn out my repeat button on V'adoro, pupille...heidi and kevin, encore!

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Album Description
Because of the success of 2003's Shakin' All Over/Hey Ho!/It's Time, Friday Music is proud to release yet another incredible Guess Who collection This Time Long Ago (The Lost Sessions 67-68). This specially priced deluxe 2 CD set is filled with almost 100 minutes of rarities, unreleased sessions and classic rock standards of which most have never been heard in the United States until now!
The Guess Who & Bachman Turner Overdrive founder Randy Bachman again has rescued these tapes from oblivion, and has carefully restored them for the Friday Music label. The packaging is superb as it includes a wonderful 14-page essay and a collection of never seen photos from Bachman's own archives. A true treasury of rare gems for loyal Guess Who fans everywhere!
This Time Long Ago continues their journey from their humble Winnipeg beginnings to becoming the superstar act which is still playing together in 2004! With songs ranging from their second U.K chart hit "His Girl" to unreleased versions of songs from their Wheatfield Soul, Canned Wheat and American Woman albums, these "lost sessions" really cover a lot of musical territory. Check out the newly discovered version of "These Eyes" with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Burton Cummings vocals are really in exceptional form on this classic track as well as all of the other tunes in this new package. Their rare Canadian single of the Neil Young penned "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong" receives star treatment as well earlier versions of Guess Who staples "Wednesday In Your Garden", "When Friends Fall Out" and "Of A Dropping Pin."
Another reason to rave about this collection is because of the unreleased songs unearthed from the Canadian television show Let's Go. Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Jim Kale and Garry Peterson appeared weekly and played not only their own material but also a selection of hit songs from the era. Their interpretations of "White Room", "Love Is All Around" and "Light My Fire" are highly interesting and enjoyable to hear after all these years of being stored in the vaults. Worthwhile if you like late 60's pop.......2004-03-17
Rescued from oblivion by Randy Bachman's Ranbach label, this collection proves how accomplished The Guess Who were before their US breakthrough hit, "These Eyes", with material drawn from the previous couple years. "This Time Long Ago", "Flying On The Ground" (a Neil Young composition), are "Miss Felicity Grey" are a few of the songs which demonstrate that this band was every bit as good as what your typical top ten group of '67 or '68. A portion of the material was restored from some recently recovered tapes from their tenure as house band on the Canadian dance TV show, LET'S GO, so we also get to hear their interpretations of such hits as "Summertime Blues" (Blue Cheer style), "Love Is All Around", "White Room", and "Light My Fire". "Light My Fire" is particularly impressive, done twice, first, in Jose Feliciano style, then busting into Doors style. This barely 20 yr old Burton Cummings has no trouble being bluesly and pained a la Jose, nor delivering edgy, break on through vocals, Morrison style, although there's a certain young "cuteness" to the latter, warmer than the Lizard King's rendition. Also included in the 2 disc set are a couple of songs that were later released on their RCA debut LP, WHEATFIELD SOUL, "These Eyes", "A Wednesday In Your Garden" (a lovely hidden GW gem of a song) & "Friends of Mine". Here, "Friends of Mine" is much more raw (a touch of adolescent-sounding sadism, but forgiveable, taking age into account), and perhaps embarrassing to modern-day Cummings, but very interesting, with a very cool closing abstract jass saxophone solo. The symphony, also heard on "Wednesday", also adds a fresh flavor for those accustomed to the WHEATFIELD SOUL version. One gem in particular on THIS TIME LONG AGO, is the jazz standard, "I'm In The Mood For Love". We now realize that Burton Cummings had these jazzy bluesy vocal stylize-abilities long before he started wearing the mustache and touring with that white grand piano. The Cummings-Bachman interplay is impressive for a couple young guys, Randy, doing his Lenny Breau, Burton & his Chet Baker. There's a couple little hiccups on this record, like the extremely goofy version of "Pretty Blue Eyes", and "Sitar Saga" (now we realize how far & quickly Burton progressed on flute from here to "Undun" or "Follow Your Daughter Home"), but I've only scratched the surface regarding this CD's points of interesting. Very informative liner notes from Canadian Rock Historian, John Einarson are included.

beautiful songs.......2007-05-09
A welcome reissue in CD format from old LP's of Carpenters compositions : song cycles of very well known lyrics. Particularly fascinating are the renderings of poems from "Gitanjali", a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore in English translated from original Bengali; a work that got Nobel prize in 1913 (Not the Pullitzer prize as mentioned in th accompanying text). The songs on lyrics/poems by other poets, all americans are just as beautiful. Well done.
A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14
This 2-CD set by soprano Carole Bogard is an absolute must-have for lovers of American songs, song recitals in general, or great singing. Culled from three long-out-of-print LPs and some performance tapes recorded for broadcast in Europe, it includes songs by Carpenter, Flanagan, Copland, Rorem, and the little-known Richard Cumming and John Woods Duke. And yet, there is not a single weak track on the entire set. Every song is interesting (something that cannot be said for many similar recitals recorded today), and each and every song is performed with musical acuity and an attention to words.
Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.
The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.
I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.

Customer Reviews:
Made me a fan of the Guess Who All Over Again.......2001-12-16
This is a really great collection, although I enjoy the first disk more than the second. Randy Bachman's There's no getting away from you is fabulous. It ranks up there with some of their moody lesser known gems, compositions such as The Answer- it's one of their best. You have a great variety of pop songs on this collection as well as covers and earlier versions of songs that were re-recorded on American Woman & Canned Wheat. These earlier versions are for the most part at least as good if not better than the later versions. The warped Pretty Blue Eyes is as funny as anything you ever heard - sung through a megaphone along with a Walter Brennan type of narration, topped off by a drunken sounding trombone solo ala Dylan's Rainy Day Woman or Kristofferson's I may drink too much. You have to hear it to believe it. There are only three misses - The Feliciano-version Light My Fire and White Room don't have the right feel or sound. The earlier version of Friends of Mine is brutal - RCA must have wisely forced Cummings to tone down/delete the lyrics about infanticide and incest. Still I'll give him credit - he outdid Jim Morrison with his outrageous lyrics. This collection is absolute fun, and is a prime example of why this highly underrated band was the best thing that ever came out of Canada. Just buy it damn it!
Finally........2001-08-10
I bought this album a week before the opening night of their American Woman Tour to get myself in the mood for the show. I'm a big fan of the band, but until this album, was disappointed we didn't have a rarities album like other bands from that era. And now it's here..
I gave the disc 4 stars, but that's really because the second disc in the set redeems the first. An interesting lok at the band in its renaissance after Chad Allen left, but aside from the odd Pretty Blue Eyes and the amazingly adept Sitar Saga, there isn't all that much spectacular stuff. Until disc 2. Starting with two versions of the Doors' Light My Fire, and rolling through a number of alternate versions of future album tracks, from These Eyes to 6am or Nearer, and a remarkable White Room, It really shows how the band grew into what we have today. This disc makes the set well worth it.
A real Guess Who Fan needs this. If you aren't a huge fan, don't worry too much about getting it.
