While most of the tunes on the C. Gibbs Group's 29 Over Me seem vaguely familiar and as a result do not hold many surprises, this debut effort nevertheless makes a solid landing with a number of radio-ready pop-rock anthems. Bandleader Christian Gibbs, a San Diego native who has paid his dues as a struggling musician in New York and London, displays formidable talent as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and vocalist whose work--though at times noticeably derivative--is ardent, hard-working, and eminently likable. The opening track, "Cut My Spirit Dry," with its layered guitar melodies and catchy chorus, and "Drag the Ashes," with its infectious, loping rhythm that effortlessly supports grungy riffs and harmonized verses, make a strong case for the rest of the album; both songs beg for airtime. "House in a Bottle" is slightly loopy and ironic, while the country-inflected "Down on Rivington" paints a sordid picture of life among junkies on the Lower East Side. "Milk" is an orchestrated power ballad redolent of '70s Top 40 radio. Produced by Paul Fox (XTC, Robyn Hitchcock), the album is slick yet gritty, intricately textured (piano, Dobro, and mandolin add depth) yet always accessible. --Rebecca Robinson

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2003-10-04

Christian Gibbs played in the 90s with Modern English & Morning Glories. "29 Over Me" is one to rescue from the bargain bins. It's a mix of different rock approaches, almost all of which works well. "Cut My Spirit Dry" opens with great wash of electric guitar as Gibbs sings obscure lyrics, "The bored died lazy while the starving succeed." "Drag the Ashes" is a midtempo rocker with Beatlesque guitars. "House in a Bottle" sports a melody that would probably show up in Rufus Wainwright's CD changer. "Ellen Terry" is an electric ballad for unwed mothers. "Sincerity's Ground" has trumpets to broaden its epic sound with churning blues-laced guitars. Gibb's guitar sounds like he's been listening to George Harrison a lot on "Down on Rivington." "Slowly Creeping Smile" is a haunting bluesy track that is excellent, "Once I'm gone there'll be one less soldier, one less fighter in your unfamiliar ring." This set is amazing because there is so much going on both musically and lyrically. On one track piano leads, on another guitars both acoustic but mostly electric. "29 Over Me" is a hidden gem. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars "29" Wins Over Me.......2002-04-01

In case this CD escaped your radar as you hopped from 28 to 30, it is time to revisit this little masterpiece. Christian Gibbs is a chameleon as he plays western troubadour, glam king, Liverpool boy, and poet laureate in this well-produced and orchestrated rock production. You know you're in for something special when your traditional non-rock instruments such as dobros, mandolins, and pedal steel feel right at home with all the rock guitars and big strings and the wailing wall of sound. My favorite tracks include "Animals Criminals," "House in A Bottle," "Ellen Terry" and the incomparable "Milk," an addictive, full-blown rock gem, if there was one. Fans of the orchestrated Beatles, Enuff Z'Nuff, Jellyfish, etc. will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD of '99.......1999-08-30

I was at an Everclear concert in Panama City Beach, FL and The C. Gibbs Group and The Mayfield Four were the openers. I was blown away with both groups. I bought both their CD's at the show. With a powerful lead singer and great guitar riffs The C. Gibbs Group will be huge. If you are reading this buy this CD. You will not be disapointed. The best tracks are Slowly Creeping Smile, Animals Criminals, & 29 over me but almost all the songs on this CD are great.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing I've heard in 1999.......1999-05-12

Wow, I stumbled across this CD and couldn't be happier. This is a great new band and a solid album. I expect we'll be hearing lots from C Gibbs group in the future. This CD is outstanding.
