This reissue of the Boston favorite's 1995 debut clearly highlights her greatest strength: her voice. Susan Tedeschi has been singing since she was 4 years old, and it shows; her voice has the power and control that comes from long experience. If her version of "Hound Dog" doesn't blow the top off of Big Mama Thornton's original, it's still a strong effort, and she's just as good with her own material. The title track--penned by Adrienne Hayes, guitarist for Tedeschi's band--is especially good, as the slow tempo allows Tedeschi to stretch her pipes a bit. Unfortunately, even by the release of Just Won't Burn, Tedeschi's guitar hadn't caught up with her voice, and the discrepancy is even more obvious here--there's a spark, but it doesn't quite catch fire. Still, there's no question that her heart's in the right place, and if her guitar work continues to improve, there'll be no stopping her. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
My cat could probably mix better! I'm serious!.......2007-02-08
Fairly good CD marred by the most horrible recording / mixdown / mastering I've ever encountered on a commercial CD - nay, make that any CD! Through headphones the stereo image pumps around, indicating they did some heavy stereo compression without mixing the channels together for the control signal.
In order to listen to this without getting a terrible headache, I had to mix it down to mono and apply some fake stereo. Pathetic! Who let this thing get stamped out without even the most cursory inspection of the content quality?
[...] But please, please, please play blues guitar on your next CD, OK? Shove those those studio pickers out of the way and do what you do best! And take JH out of your Rolodex!
she's great , this recording well . . . . .......2005-07-12
this is worth owning as it's a record of susan younger . . . .
i'm really looking forward to her new album - supposedly coming out this fall
Great music, bad production.......2003-04-01
I love Susan Tedeschi and was thrilled to get a hold of this "pre-fame" CD. It's a great CD too. Full of powerful blues that are more reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt than of Janis Joplin.
The production on this CD is really pretty spotty. The first track "It's Up to You" has a very muddy quality to it and "It Hurts Me Too" is painful to listen to on headphones with the mixing from left to right channels constantly moving. Most of the tracks however, are adequately mixed.
All in all, this is well worth listening to if you're a Tedeschi fan, but her following CD's are far superior to this one. She just keeps getting better.
A good record.......2002-09-30
Like most people, I fell in love with Susan Tedeschi after hearing "Just Won't Burn". It became the soundtrack of my senior year in high school...so I immediately bought "Better Days", and at first listen, I was disappointed. Nothing seemed to click. It wasn't bad, just okay. I set it aside for a couple months and just recently started listening to it again. I don't know why I didn't love it before! Some of the songs almost have a country feel, like the first track. Most are mellow blues, but they still rock. I can't wait for the new album!
This gal knows how to play the blues!.......2002-07-12
I first heard Ms. Tedeschi when she opened for B.B. King in his year 2000 tour. What a night! I happen to be a big fan of the blues, and when I heard those performers, I was more than impressed! But Ms. Tedeschi stood out from the rest, because she expresses such a great amount of talent. You can tell that she loves her work! She can really play the blues, and her voice is just the icing on the cake!
It's hard to say which song on this album is my favorite. It's like trying to decide which one of your children you love more. But I will say that her interpretation of "Hound Dog" is not one to be missed. I would also have to say that the instrumental work on "You're On My Hair" is great! Not to mention, she can play a mean slide guitar! (When you hear "Locomotive" you'll know what I mean). I recommend this album to anyone who has a deep respect for the blues, you won't be disappointed!

The Who Who's Better Who's Great.......2007-03-03
This is a great album it has all of the good songs on most of the albums it is Better And Best
Let Us Compare Anthologies.......2006-05-25
The Who's catalog is flooded with compilations, to the point that one has to wonder how it is worth anyone's time and money for most of them to even exist. While compiling the actual best songs by Townshend and Co. would be almost impossible, putting together their biggest hits along with a few treat tracks should be less of a chore. For the frugal compilation seeker, it comes down to four choices among the dozens: Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy, Who's Better Who's Best, My Generation: The Very Best of The Who, and the 2-disc The Ultimate Collection. So to paraphrase the title of Leonard Cohen's first book, let us compare anthologies.
Many purists would argue that Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy - the first Who collection - is the best. It is difficult to disagree with this assessment. Released in between Tommy and Who's Next, there is really nothing missing that one could reasonably hope for from a single disc. All of the big hits from "I Can't Explain" to "Pinball Wizard" are there, as are two nice bonuses: the smaller hit "A Legal Matter", and John Entwistle's awesome non-hit "Boris the Spider", both of which make this anthology of their early years all the more enjoyable and complete. The newcomer will be pleased to see all of the titles s/he recognizes - "My Generation", "Substitute", "I Can See For Miles" - as well as several s/he may not - "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere", "I'm A Boy" - but by which s/he will be very impressed and pleasantly surprised. Furthermore, the timing of this release could not have been better. Who's Next, which came out later the same year, was to be a very different beast than its predecessors. And since Tommy had started to indicate a change in the band's sound already, the inclusion of "Pinball Wizard" makes this a perfect Janus-faced marker. As the first Who compilation, MBB&B is literally perfect, and a model for any greatest hits collection.
Now, what about those folks whose first exposure to The Who was from "You Better, You Bet" on MTV, and who were always a bit more into songs like "Baba O'Reilly"? Well, we have two choices - Who's Better Who's Best and My Generation: The Very Best. Unfortunately, the former has been overlooked in favor of the latter, but the difference between the two discs is a matter of only a few songs. The Very Best scores some points with the inclusion of "Boris the Spider", and it also includes "The Seeker", which I personally can do without. So at this point, each disc has two songs that the other doesn't: WBWB has "I'm Free" and "See Me Feel Me", and The Very Best has "5:15" and the horribly vapid "Let's See Action". With this difference as the deal breaker, I think that WBWB is, well, better.
But both have certain imperfections. "Join Together", "Squeeze Box", and "Who Are You", none of which are among The Who's best songs, are included on each of them. I suppose that they are included for the sake of completeness, but they could have been scraped to make room for "A Quick One (While He's Away)" and/or
"Love Reign O'er Me" on both, and for "Boris the Spider" on WBWB. (Both are also missing "Behind Blue Eyes", and the WBWB version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" is inexplicably shortened in the middle. These are moot points: anyone with enough interest in The Who to buy a compilation should also own Who's Next, the parent album of both of these songs.) Still, I am glad that both have "You Better, You Bet", which finds the band embracing rock 'n roll elder statesmanship as well as "My Generation" found them embracing youth.
Finally, there is the 2-disc set The Ultimate Collection. It seems like this would be the most obvious place for a newcomer to start, because it has the most songs on it (35, to be exact). But that might also be part of its problem. Stretching so many tracks over the course of 2 discs can dampen the impact of the individual songs. However, with the exception of "A Quick One", it includes all of the songs mentioned in this review, as well as "Call Me Lightning", "Bargain" and Entwistle's "My Wife" from Who's Next, "Long Live Rock", and the latter-day tracks "Sister Disco" and "Eminence Front". So for someone determined to have only a compilation in their library, The Ultimate Collection is the one to have. But s/he should not be surprised if his/her appetite is whetted enough that s/he goes out and buys several other Who CDs as well.
And on that note, let me make it clear that no collection is sufficient as the only Who CD on one's shelves. The superb CD The Who Sell Out is represented only by "I Can See For Miles" on all four described above, and Tommy only by "Pinball Wizard" and "See Me Feel Me" (which doesn't actually appear in it's single form on that CD). Moreover, Live At Leeds lives up to its reputation as a seminal live recording, and it does have "A Quick One" on it. And if it isn't clear by now, every self-respecting rock fan should have Who's Next. So which compilation do I actually recommend? I have to vote against The Ultimate Collection, as it is simply overkill. The Very Best is weaker, for my tastes, than WBWB. Therefore, it comes down to WBWB or MBB&B. And my suggestion is, the envelope please...Who's Better Who's Best. It may be the neglected stepchild of the compilations, but it spans their entire career, contains missteps that are on the other comps anyway, and features 2 great songs that aren't on The Very Best or MBB&B.
Get WBWB and Who's Next. Where you go from there is up to you. I recommend The Who Sell Out and Live At Leeds, which - even if you are leery of live albums - really is that great.
Good, but not best WHO compilation.......2005-07-16
I love the WHO, they rank only after the Beatles as my favorite group. I have all of their CDs. This CD at the time of its release was fine, it was a good career spanner. But I think it misses too much, for example, it does not have any Quadrophenia material. I would say buy this only if you are a completist. I prefer the Who's Greatest, even though that one is shorter and also inexplicably omits material. The Who Hits CD to get is the Ultimate Collection. IT is the only WHO hits package that contains Eminence Front. So for this one, 4 stars, because of the incomparable material; would be five if it had a couple of more vital songs on it.
The Who's Best definately, but could be a little bit better.......2004-02-22
This ia great album and I would definatly reccomend not only to beginners but also to collecters. This site is one of the only places in the world that has this album new. The two things that could make this album the best album from 1988 would be changing the shortened versions of 'Who Are You' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' into there full length version. Otherwise, this is definately The Who's Best. GET IT!!!
Who's better than the Who?.......2003-06-26
You could make a case for the Who being a single act. After all, they only released ten studio albums during their long career. They released many singles that didn't come from albums, especially in the early years. Every song here is a certified Who classic. But there are really too many Who classics to fit on a single CD. You would be better off buying the two disc Ultimate Collection. However, if you really want a single disc Who compilation, this one does an adequate job.

Customer Reviews:
Misses two key hits.......2005-05-22
Like "The Best of Carly Simon" and this 1998 "Very Best of", both do not include Jesse (a huge hit from 1980) or the Kris Kristoffesen penned hit "I've Got to Have You". Besides that, this collection is quite good, but I urge people to import the Australin version of the 2004 collection "Reflections" which includes both this impressive and should not be forgotten Carly classics.
Record companies take note: Don't omit the obvious tracks just to fill with other songs that no-one knows.
Great Rendition Of Carly's Greatest Hits! .......2004-08-03
Singer and songwriter Carly Simon magically walked the tightrope between what was commonly referred to as folk and pop music in the early 1970s and gradually emerged from the shadow of other folk titans to become a pop singer of verve and moment, earning herself a place in the pantheon of very successful singers like Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, and a number of others like Carol King who were on the pop charts and in the folk clubs earlier in their career. This album is a wonderful summary of the best of her efforts throughout her career, including those early years. From her breakthrough hits like -That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be- and -Anticipation- to later smash singles like -Loving You Is the Right Thing To Do- and -You're So Vain- (rumored to be written about everyone from James Taylor to Mick Jagger, but more likely a joke aimed at actor Warren Beatty) is all here.
This collection successfully gathers the best of those early years in one place, and then adds to it those superb follow-on efforts with a second CD that reprises her second stage efforts with another collection of more adult-centered pop hits. Even though I usually prefer to sample an artist in context in their early albums, even I have to admit this is a great comprehensive overview of the collective efforts from Carly Simon. There are a lot of good songs here, like the terrific -Legend In Your Own Time- about then beau James Taylor, and the rocking -Mockingbird-, a duet done with Taylor.
Indeed, there are other interesting, provocative, and beautiful selections here, including my own personal favorite, -I Haven't Got Time For The Pain-. This is a great look at a fascinating artist who later made a terrific comeback album called -Coming Around Again-, with hits such as the title cut, as well as superb numbers like -The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of- to regain her audience and popularity, which she used to great advantage in the years since, with a number of hits included here from -Better Not Tell Her- to -All I Want Is You-, and from -It Happens Every Day- to -Like A River-. It is one of her best and most representative greatest hits albums yet, and it gives us an interesting vantage point with which to understand her better. This is a terrific greatest hits album by an artist who is often under-appreciated. This is one I heartily recommend. Enjoy!
Still 5+++ stars, but read updated review for more choices.......2004-04-23
This is an updated review as although the original still holds, but there are is one and soon will be another that were not available when I bought this in late 2001, and I wanted to share the news with you guys as you have helped me for so many years.
This was the very first 1 CD release of Carly's work that had almost every song of hers that I wanted to hear. Even the 3 CD box set did not include her Arista hits and was a must for all fans when I originally bought it. I overlooked the import steep price as it was worth more than worth it. I finally got to hear "Let The River Run" from the soundtrack to "Working Girl" next to all my favorites.
At the time I said that I wished that more companies would cooperate with one another to produce greatest hits collections that reflect the career of artists who may have had more than one home during their career. If it's about money, they can split it on a hit by hit basis, and in the end more products will sell. Well, I guess that I was not the only one to see the advantages of putting together ALL of Carly's better known work as in 2002 Rhino release the magnificent 2 CD release titled "Anthology," which is even better than this one as it is obviously more comprehensive and BMG Heritage will be releasing a remastered 1 CD release in early May, 2004 so based on the play lists I would recommend these two domestic releases over this one, which still warrants 5 stars and was the first release to shoot for more than just a part of Carly's career.
Carly's Elektra and BMG material in one CD.......2004-02-07
Carly's so vain...she probably thinks this review's about her. And she's right, but not vain. Rather than go the Elektra-years compilation, I chose this import because it included the singles from both her that era and her later BMG years, plus included my favourite song by her and an Oscar winner for best song. But Carly Simon played an important role in the emergence of the soft rock and singer/songwriters following the radicalism of the 60's. In its place were songs of a more personal, vulnerable, and introspective nature, putting her in the same league as her husband from 72-83, James Taylor, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell. Here are highlights from the 19 songs here.
Her signature tune, "You're So Vain," from her third album, and the famed refrain, "you probably think this song is about you, don't you?" targeted either her earlier squeeze Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger, who sang backup vocals-I'm not sure what the jury's decided. Hardly surprising that a line from this song, "clouds in my coffee" was used as the title of her box set. Yet, a pleading sensitive song like "You Belong To Me" penned with Michael McDonald, with its "you don't have to prove your love to strangers" could be a less caustic way of preventing a sig. other from becoming an ex-sig. other.
The 70's was also a period of feminism, and its influence can be felt in the haunting and questioning piano and strings "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" from her self-titled Elektra debut. The deadlock and misery of "silent noons, tearful nights, angry dawns" in her friends' marriage caused her to question the effectiveness of marriage, an institution where one "moved in together, and raised a family of our own/you and me."
Speaking of marriage, the cover of Inez and Charlie Foxx's "Mockingbird" was a #5 duet with her husband James Taylor, and it's clear that he benefitted more, as his previous albums never went beyond gold.
"Anticipation" is another early classic hit, but it rankles me that it was used in a ketchup commercial. Thank goodness for plastic squeeze bottles!
Carly's film songs numbered quite a bit, and they include the string-arranged slow-dancing ballad from The Spy Who Loved Me, the Carole Bayer Sager/Marvin Hamlisch-penned "Nobody Does It Better." I'll bet 007 got an ego trip from hearing "you're the best" from her #2 hit. Her piano and synth-oriented song "Why" was used in Jonathan Kaufer's Soup For One and was a UK hit in 1982. It asks that question "Why does your love hurt so much?"
Two of her film songs were for Mike Nichols films. The first one is my favourite song by her, from Heartburn and the title track of her first Arista album, Coming Around Again. "I know nothing stays the same/but if you're willing to play the game/it's coming around again/so don't mind if i fall apart/there's no room in a broken heart." One of the producers was the person she found comfort in following her divorce from James Taylor, drummer Russ Kunkel. And the other songs from that album, such as "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of" and "All I Want Is You" showed she had lost none of her touch, although songs like "Give Me All Night" showed 80's-stylings in her music.
Finally, the Oscar winner, "Let The River Run" from Working Girl, featuring rock guitar, gospelish choirs, religious references ("the new Jerusalem") and soaring vocals.
"Like A River" is a 1994 song showing that her talent hasn't exhausted. The aftermath of a mother's death and the fighting over the inheritance, a "metaphor for what's wrong with us," leads to her asking her mother what's she doing now, and being reminded of past memories, but most of all, she accepts that while their time together on Earth is over, there's always the afterlife.
A worthwhile retrospective to a woman who conveyed her inner spotlight into poetry, verse, and then song.
Outstanding single CD collection of Carly's finest music.......2004-01-10
Carly has had long and distinguished career but this collection manages to include most of the essentials. Personally, I think Carly really deserves more than one CD and if Anthology (an American double CD containing all but one of the songs here and much else besides) had been available when I bought this, I would have bought that instead.
From my perspective, there were two peaks in Carly's career - her seventies hits and her late eighties album, Coming around again. Between them, they dominate this collection, although there are other great tracks here, most notably Why.
Carly began her successful period in the seventies via the American hits That's the way I've always heard it should be and Anticipation. Britain then discovered her music and subsequent hits charted in both the UK and USA, though Carly remained more popular in America. Her international hits from the seventies include You're so vain, The right thing to do, Mockingbird (a duet with James Taylor) and Nobody does it better (a James Bond theme). Carly's only big hit of the early eighties was Why, although she released some interesting albums during that time. In the late eighties came the album Coming around again, possibly her best ever. It is represented by four tracks - The stuff that dreams are made of, All I want is you, Give me all night and the title track. A few later tracks are also included, most notably the Oscar-winning Let the river run (from Working girl).
For many years (until the more recent Reflections compilation), this was easily the strongest single-CD collection of Carly's music but the import price is about the same as the double CD Anthology, so buy that or Reflections instead.

Carly Forever!!!!!.......2007-07-15
Anybody who has read all my reviews knows I have a crush on Carly...old news. Gorgeous, sexy, wonderful...and the singer of our generation. This wonderful 1998 release is a British version of "Reflections", sort of. [Or maybe "Reflections" is the version, since it's six years newer].
OK....Do you want both albums? I have both, but I'm a Big Fan. This album has 19 songs, vs. 20 on "Reflections". Sixteen are the same...this album uniquely includes "Why" and "Angel From Montgomery". "Reflections" uniquely has "Jesse", "Touched By The Sun", and "Amity". Big difference is, on "Reflections", the songs are in chronological order, here, they are quite random. Which do you prefer? Your call...
In my review of "Reflections", I call it an "essential" recording...it is. Is this? If you're "like me", certainly, but then you already have it. This album wins in cover art...great back cover of Carly in a mini. Sound quality is identical..."Reflections" is easy to find anywhere...this is one tough album to find, so you might want to get it just for that reason. That this is a wonderful record is a self evident truth...Carly is one of the wonders of God's creation. I actually prefer this to "Reflections", but dern if I know why. Go ahead; get both.

A different direction for Jessica- 4.5.......2005-11-22
Her sound/Her music-In this CD it sounds like Jessica added lower notes to her vocal register but she still has a strong, smooth voice and stays in a range that works. This CD is basically singer-songwriter piano pop with guitar, as Jessica learned how to play the guitar too. Every song sings like a relationship diary; not a bad thing as Jessica makes it work, but there's a lot less variety of subject matter.
Her best songs-
3) Karma in a Gun-This is an interesting song that shows a new side of Jessica. She sings about a boyfriend who's not faithful to her, prompting her to fantasize about revenge. Believe it or not, this song is more perspective than it sounds, and the instrumentation is low but impressive.
4)Drown-Here Jessica is singing about a broken relationship and comparing it to taking a bath. In this case, drown is a metaphor for getting too deeply involved in the relationship. Her vocals are good; she starts by singing low and getting higher and louder as the song progresses. Her piano/guitar background music is upbeat, which makes this "sad" song more upbeat.
8)Princess Bride-This song is still about relationships, but interestingly enough it goes back to the sound of her first CD in instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals. She compares her real-life relationships to relationships in fairy tales and how she wishes hers were better. Her vocals are amazing here; she pushes herself to sing higher notes and she succeeds without sounding fake.
Final Recommendations-This CD is definitely different from Jessica's first CD, so people who really like the subject variety of that one may be disappointed, but I do recommend listening to this CD at least once. It is a change and it may take time to get used to, but in the long term it's worth it.
An excellent follow-up CD.......2003-08-21
I loved this CD. I have been waiting for it to come out since I hear Keys in a minor (under her maiden name Jessica Riddle) and I was not disappointed! My favorite song has to be Can't See and Drown, but all of them are excellent. The piano playing great and this is definelity worth your money!

Nigerian Praise!.......2006-07-24
Tracks like "Designer's Original", "Garment of Praise" and "Mary Had A Little Lamb" are excellent, but my absolute favorite is "O Se Baba"! This will rock the joint any day and guarantees to get old and young on their feet, clapping their hands and giving praise to The Most High to an African beat!
Classic music from a CCM pioneer.......2001-06-07
I have loved Dannibell since the days when she was part of Andrae Crouch and the Disciples back in the 70s. This was one of her last solo efforts (she died earlier this year), so this will be one of your last chances to hear that marvelous voice. Hurry before the record label decides we've all forgotten her and stop printing her album! My favorite cut: the Nigerian praise song (Oh Se' Baba). But the whole album is worth a listen. Danni, see you in the Kingdom!
Danniebelle Hall music is soul stirring.......2000-02-24
Danniebelle Hall's music is true to form. Those of you who are not geared toward rap style gospel, you must purchase Ms. Hall's music. You can understand her music, clear precise lyrics. Very rich vocals and a style that penetrates the soul. It has been 5 years since this release, and I hope she is about to produce and write another Heart felt (CD).
It is very inspiring music........1999-09-19
The music of Danniebelle is one of my favorites. Her sincere, heartfelt music inspires and challenges the christian to live beyond their comfort zones and spans racial boundaries.
