Hit and Miss.......2000-06-30

"On Parade" sees the reformation of the nutty late-Seventies L.A. Punk unit, the Deadbeats. In their original form they only released two singles which quickly became rare cult classics. "Kill the Hippies" was the most famous of these. With this latest release the unit (with an altered lineup) has improved in their musical abilities and seems to be attempting to cash in on their cult status (Kill the Hippies) and current (1996) musical fads (swing, Punk-Funk). Only the former attempt meets with any success and the first five or six toons are the best. While still very zany and weird, the band has become more artsy, adding some difficulty to the formula. The first several tracks are a fine example of Zonk: the fusion of Zolo and Punk. The jerky, precise rhythms complement bright sounds and punctual honks and squawks from the sax, all with hyperactive delivery. This recalls the original version of the Deadbeats, especially the song "Brainless" from the "Kill the Hippies" single. The other songs fall flat. "Sauce Full of Secrets" recalls the art-Funk of the Deadbeats spinoff group, Bent. The others recall banality. Recommended for fans of the group and completist Zolophiles only.

these guys are pretty wacky. a couple of horns, a whole lot of distortion and some goofy yet socially oriented lyrics comprise the Deadbeats. In the begining they dont seem to know how to play their instruments but they bring it all together in the end for a very energetic and depressing and funny album. In conclusion the Deadbeats are spiffy.
