Desolation Boulevard
Editorial Reviews

Acknowledged as an influence by both punk and metal bands, Sweet's Desolation Boulevard is worthy of renown for its impact alone. Criticized in their day for straddling fences, Sweet managed to adeptly merge bubblegum pop and hard rock with "A.C.D.C." and "I Want to Be Committed." "Ballroom Blitz" is a wrecking ball of a rocker with a surplus of hyperventilating urgency. Sweet's knack for melody surfaces again in the infectious "Fox on the Run." Desolation Boulevard is one hell of a good time. --Steve Gdula

NO WAY AM I ASHAMED.... THIS IS ROCK!.......2007-04-16
This album will shred up your speakers. Like, it FOOOOKIN RAWKS! Sweet is one of those glam acts of the seventies that sort of drifted away over time, producing a large amount of hits in the seventies, and are only really known these days for a small few. Two of which appear on this album BALLROOM BLITZ and FOX ON THE RUN. If you know those two songs you probably have some idea whats up. Yes, they are a little bit flamboyant at times, but this stuff is crazzzzy, tear it up type stuff, when in the right mood (like-partying loudddd) I can jam this album over and over.
Sadly, the band never really matched the style they went with on this album (which is why I would definately recommend this one over a greatest hits of any sort) .... if the only Sweet song you are familiar with is 1978's Love is Like Oxygen (which is sort of catchy in it's own right, but) you've got the wrong impression. In 1974, this bubblegum group decided to blow up its candy pop fan base and absolutely kick some ace. I totally dig the seventies acid metal feel that is exuberated on this disc in songs like THE 6-TEENS, I WANNA BE COMMITED and SOLID GOLD BRASS... but every song here is a lost gem... so much better than any glam stuff ever produced (ever hear Geordie, the band that Brian Johnsomn was in before he joined ACDC? no, no, no,no).... Sweet... Desolation Boulevard... Go... buy... ROCK... tell 'em Wally Gator sent ya.
If only all CD's could be this good! .......2007-04-02
Well, old-shoolers...we made it this far and this album is still relevent!
Notice all those 5 star reviews? It's because this CD truly deserves it.
This album had great production to begin with and the new copy I bought sounds GREAT. This is hard rock,guitar-driven,with full bass and excellent drumming. The Queen sounding vocal tracks are cool. When I first heard this, it was played between Deep Purple's Machinehead and Zep's Physical Graffiti at a mid-70's party, and the action never slowed down. "A.C.D.C"...what a frickin' riot of a song! Set Me Free,Into The Night,Solid Gold Brass,No You Don't...all of them a rock and roll treat.Buy this, crank it up,and play air-guitar along with it. Way cool, junior!
(oh,yeah...Amazon is giving this to you,at this price)
Ballroom Blitz Me.......2007-03-10
A rockin' good album by Sweet. If you like hard drivin' music that gets you going, then this one will do it for sure.
Has some good glam rock songs, but overall just "ok".......2005-12-30
Sweet is best known for "Ballroom Blitz" from the Wayne's World soundtrack and lesser known for their single "Little Willy". This album pretty much contains two great glam rock songs, "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run", with the rest being either "ok" or filler. I'll admit that they do a good job making catchy, yet dumb and pointless, songs like "The 6-Teens" and "No You Don't", however it's catchy in a Backstreet Boys kind of way (i.e. forgettable). It sounds pretty dated and thus not really recommended.
Highlights include:
"Ballroom Blitz"
"The 6-Teens" (but barely)
"Fox On The Run"
As good as I remember.......2005-10-20
This CD took 28 years off my age. I became 18 again. This CD is really as good as I remember, and now I know why Sweet was one of my favorite bands back in the 70's. Great drum work, heavy bass and those unique vocal harmonies make Sweet a classic 70's hard rock band. Get this CD instead of other Sweet compliations. The original songs are much better than any of the alternate versions available.

Brian, Andy, Mick And Steve Could Really Rock!!!.......2005-06-03
I saw this band live in concert back in 1974 and the memory of that performance is still with me today. This band features the hard hitting vocals of the late , great Brian Connelly and Andy Scott paved the way for future aspiring rock guitarists. These guys were a "glam band" for a long time but their music was SOLID ROCK.Do yourself a big favour and buy his album which contains 30 year old songs which sound as fresh today as they did way back then.Rest In Peace Brian. You ae sadly missed.
Interesting complement for the american version!..........2005-05-16
Just few days ago I had the opportunity to listen this new SWEET version of the Desolation Boulevard recording from 1974 with some interest in the bonus tracks: "Medusa", "Burn On The Flame" and "Someone else will" mainly. I had listen these last two in the Sweet Live album from 1995 and the versions that were presented there, were more polished from the originals; for example, in the live version the track "Someone Else Will" has a more interesting riff guitar that reminds the powerfull rhythm base from the Led Zep's "Imigrant Song" track, and in this CD, the acompased pace of the song, makes it weaker and lack of emotion because the lose of feeling...
Tracks like "Miss Demeanor" or "Lady Starlight" were extracted from the maravelous "Give Us A Wink" album; and in a wider perspective, this CD sounds like an experimental album with unfinished raw versions from the recordings that we already know and results very different from the Capitol version. there is no "Sweet F.A.", "Set me Free" or "Ballroom Blitz" and the version of "Solid Gold Brass" is again, weaker...But an interesting complement for the american version!...Good Luck!
Not your Mama's Desolation Boulevard..........2005-04-16
This is not your mom's version of the North American "Desolation Boulevard" if you want all those songs you need (and want) to get the "Sweet Fanny Adams" album also. This being said and done, SWEET continue their adolescence here. The songs are about growing up teens (the Sixteens), Rebellion and of course girls. By now we know to expect the great guitar riffs and vocal harmonies SWEET is so good at delivering. Also a rarety for SWEET, a slow song! The original version of "Lady Starlight", it slightly differs from the one that was included on the North American release of the album give us a wink. Slightly less polished but, the song remains the same (Ha ha ha). Also, nice of them to include the original and single version of "Fox on the Run" which are very different. Again a lot of very nice extras like "Burn on the Flame" which in my opinion is one of the best "B" side songs to never have made it to an album (until now that is).
DESOLATION BOULEVARD (2005 RELEASE).......2005-02-05
SWEET FANS. I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW. I HAVE THE 1999 REMASTER OF THIS CD. BUT HAD TO TAKE A CHANCE AND GET IT AGAIN. I DID NOT THINK THAT ALL THE SONGS ON THE 1999 RELEASE WERE CLEAR AS OTHERS. LIKE, TURN IT DOWN, MY GENERATION, TEENAGE RAMPAGE AND I WANNA BE COMMITTED. IT WAS GOOD, THAN THE NO REMASTER ADD. IN THE 2005 RELEASE IT WAS RESTORED. THE WAY IT SHOULD BE CRISP, CLEAR AND ENHANCED. THE ORIGINAL FOX ON THE RUN (7" VERSION) IS ON THE BONUS TRACKS. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE 1999 REMASTER AND WANT BETTER TO EXCELLENT. GET IT. BUT THERE IS ONE THING I WOULD MISS. THE PICTURE DISC ON THE CD OF THE FRONT COVER. THIS IS YELLOW DISC, WITH THE WORD SWEET ON IT.

Hope for the new generation .........2005-02-07
I would just like to mention that i am a mere 20 years old, and was raised listening to many of the greatest oldies bands such as Deep Purple, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd and of course Sweet. Having the opportunity to harvest those bands in my mind while being exposed to all the music as of current has brought something to my attention. Most people would assume being a youth i would favour artists like Linkin Park or Brittany Spears, but the truth is i would gladly abolish everything nowadays to get all the old music back. When listening to songs from Desolation Boulevard, i get so pumped that i honestly can't think of any modern day artist that even comes close that type of talent. That has to say something about their music, if it has made that type of lasting impression on a youth that has the choice between both era's. Music has lost all its innocence since it became a trend. Sweet said it best.. "everybody wants a piece of the action"...
Consider The Time - '73 are you freakin' kidding me!!!.......2004-12-12
In 2004 it seems very long ago in a small village in P.E.I. Canada. I first heard this album when I was a kid, maybe 6 or 7, now I'm 36. My older brother had the LP (as well as 8 track, but if you're under 25yrs. old, nevermind!) in his huge collection. Wow I loved it right away. All of a sudden I new I wanted to play the drums, and did I/do I ever!! For years I'd mention it to friends, as we talked of Zeppelin, Kiss, Priest, Sabbath, Van Halen(the real Halen with Roth, not with Sammy Hag can't sing!!) but no one ever heard of it. How was this possible I thought out loud! To me this was Kiss before Kiss only without the make-up and they where british! Don't hear ir? put on "Into The Night" or "Set Me Free" or even "Sweet F.A." and crank it up! To this day when I listen to the album(CD)I can't help but think, "what happened"? For any of you who remember, this band did some (in my opinion) awful stuff later, i.e. "Love is like Oxygen" BLAAA! No offence to those who perhaps like the later music from Sweet, not everyone will like this album either. I personally did'nt like the later albums. all I can say is for 1973('74 US) This album truly is classic in the hard rock genre. If you've only heard "Fox on the Run" or "Ballroom Blitz" because of radio, to me those are the weaker tracks on this album. The only negative of this album I'm sorry to say,(it kind of reflects the era) is the lyrics are a little sexest i.e. "if she don't spread I'm gonna bust her head..." etc. and understandably my wife hates most of the songs as a result,(she being a singer/writer) hence the four stars as opposed to five I'd like to give on it's music alone. Still, it's a must for any hard rock/classic rock fan or a music lover of all genres, like myself...well with the exception of country & western!! Nuff said! Rock on!
DESOLATION BOULEVARD (IMPORT).......2004-03-24
FOX ON THE RUN- NOT ORIGINAL USA VERSION. ALTERNATE VERSION FOR U.K. TURN IT DOWN HAD A FLAW IN RECORDING. WAS HIGH VOLUME WHEN STARTED OUT. THEN GOT WEAK IN SOUND. BUT STILL STOOD OUT AFTER IT GOT GOING. MY GENERATION-THE WHO'S RECORDING DONE BY THEM DONE WELL. MAN WITH A GOLDEN ARM (DRUM SOLO) TOO LONG. LADY STARLIGHT, I WANNA BE COMMITTED,SOLID GOLD BRASS AND TEENAGE RAMPAGE AWESOME SONGS. 6-TEENS AND MADUSSA ALRIGHT. I HAVE A LOUD BUTTON ON MY RECIEVER. IF TURNED OFF. IT SOUNDS BETTER AND CLEAR. USUALLY IT IS THE OTHER WAY AROUND FOR A DIGITALLY REMASTER. THE ANALOG REMASTERS WAS USED MAKING THIS CD.
Excellent.......2003-09-09
Great album, just wanted to note that the acoustic version of Lady Starlight that appears here was re-done on Give Us A Wink but only appeared on the US version, and was re-done in a more heavy style. Likely it was included by the record company, still looking to have Sweet break big in the US.
AGAIN ONE OF THEIR BEST !!!.......2001-01-12
Yes, this release is the ORIGINAL "Desolation Boulevard" the way it meant to be and this is by far better than American version. Better buy this. Everything is correctly said in other reviews. I can only mention that this was the second monster hit by The Sweet along with "Sweet Fanny Adams" (both albums originally released in 1974) and it was their peak hour. This digitally remastered edition released by BMG in Germany in 1999, but again it has no proper booklet ! I have different (American !) release of 1998 (also digitally remastered with 2 bonus tracks) released directly by their publishing company Chinebridge Ltd. with extended booklet containing the original LP artwork with full lyrics inside ! I must say that for the first time ever I have come across here with extended drum solo on a STUDIO album. It is fantastic ! And it is not a filler (as frequently on live recordings)! Please check out their cover of "A Man With A Golden Arm". Mick Tucker was indeed a genuine skin-smasher. Answering to one of American reviewers here I can say that original lead vocalist Brian Connolly had quit by the beginning of 1979, the three remaining members recorded three more albums (ranging from so-so to awful) where Steve Priest and Andy Scott took over on vocals and recruited a new member Gary Moberly on keyboards. They disbanded in 1982 (but not in 1981). In the 90's they re-emerged several times in different incarnations but there are no hopes for original line-up reunion due to Brian Connolly died in April 1997 from a heart-attack.
