It's hard not to get nostalgic listening to the selections jazz composer and musician Carl Wolf produced and arranged for Music Aboard the Titanic, a collection of mostly popular music from 1912. The strings-and-piano chamber group Wolf leads does its best to showcase the versatility of the White Star Line musicians, playing a set list that includes ragtime, light classical, and waltzes. "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Blue Danube," and "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" are the best-known inclusions, all played in elegant, straightforward fashion. Songs are intelligently grouped by their presumed setting onboard the ship, with lighter tunes classified as "Luncheon: 1st Class Dining Room" and more serious fare found in "Concert in the 1st Class Lounge." Compared to the bombast of certain Titanic tributes, this collection is sublime. Just be forewarned: whether played on the Titanic or on this CD, this is largely background music. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
One of the most enduring legacies of the 'Titanic' is the heroism of the eight musicians who continued playing even as the great steamship sank into the Atlantic. A powerful prologue and epilogue composed by Carl Wolfe, along with selections from the White Star songbook, capture the spirit of the voyage and of the music these musicians played.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable, but flawed.......2003-08-27
Overall, this is an enjoyable album that is worth purchasing. The playing is refined and elegant, and it succeeds in conveying the atmosphere of a tea room or lounge on the doomed ship. But, there are a number of areas where the recording could have been improved:
- Many of the songs are represented only by the chorus, with the verses being completely absent. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart", for instance, runs through the chorus 3 times, with slightly varying orchestration, but never do we hear the verse.
- The string playing is pretty poor with regard to intonation. Passages where multiple strings are (supposedly) in unison come off a little harsh. Maybe that was the authentic way string players sounded back then? Doubtful.
- The newly composed material that bookends the authentic original music is rather discordant in style. I found myself just playing the middle tracks, skipping the first and last two.
This 1997 CD came before the movie and it's a masterpiece..........2002-06-02
In 1996, Carl Wolfe was commissioned to arrange music from the Titanic playlist (used by the White Star Line musicians) for the 1997 Titanic Exhibition. It is officially endorsed by the exhibition. Since its release, dozens of other CDs have followed, hoping to capitalize off of the success of the movie. Some aren't bad, but "Music Aboard The Titanic" is effective because it was written and arranged by a musician/composer who had served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as an arranger, conductor and musician. His two original pieces--"Leaving Queenstown" and "Fateful Hour"--are emotionally-charged and tie the entire work together as a concept CD. "Music Aboard The Titanic" is a real masterpiece. I should know--I was the one who commissioned Carl Wolfe for the job!
Very good recording for the price........1999-08-16
This recording provides a nice look into the musical trends of the upper class of early 1900s society. Although the quality of the music is certainly not that of I Salonisti, it is pleasant, clear, and relatively well-orchestrated. One of the problems with this recording, however, is that some of the pieces are not complete and/or played as they were intended to be played. The section "Dinner Dance" (tracks 12-15) includes Strauss' BLUE DANUBE; this CD's version is only a 2 1/2 minute "clip" from the original piece. Note also that -- depending on the type of audio CD player you have -- you may experience what one reviewer called "clicking" sounds. This has happend only on one CD player I have used.
Despite the minor flaws in this CD, it is definately worth the fifteen or so dollars, if you are a fan of salon-style music.
You may wish to consider the following other recordings at Amazon.com. I own all of them and am very impressed, overall:
* LAST DANCE: MUSIC FOR A VANISHING ERA (I Salonisti) - EXCELLENT * AND THE BAND PLAYED ON: MUSIC ABOARD THE TITANIC (I Salonisti) - EXCELLENT * MUSIC FROM THE WHITE STAR SONGBOOK - VERY GOOD * THE MUSIC OF THE TITANIC - GOOD * 21 AUTHENTIC SONGS FROM TITANIC (Mary Jane Newman and the Southampton Pier Players) - EXCELLENT * TITANIC: MUSIC FROM THE FATEFUL VOYAGE (Ian Whitcomb & The White Star Orchestra) - EXCELLENT

Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13
After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

Gary Chapman is probably better known as the host of TNN's Prime Time Country and, of course, as the husband of widely popular singer Amy Grant. But the guy can play a guitar lick or two, as evidenced on The Light Inside. Chapman lights up with the gospel-tinged rocker "Sweet Glow of Mercy" and augments it with some well-placed riffs. While the opener, "Where Are the Broken Hearts," sounds suspiciously like Tom Petty's "Freefallin'," Chapman provides just enough leeway to have you tapping your toes by the song's finish. But it is the ballad "Sweet Jesus" that ends the release on its finest note. The powerful lyrics and emotionally charged vocals Chapman belts out leave little room for doubt: the man has soul. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Satisfying rock/country with serious crossover appeal and amazing lyrics!.......2005-11-14
What a testament to the talent, love, and yes, transparency of Gary Chapman as a songwriter, father, and husband, (Amy really made a mistake letting this one go! And to those sceptics out there, YES, Gary Chapman's music is THAT GOOD!) His lyrical content is solidly Christian, evangelical even, yet not overly "preachy," packaged in an extremely modern and pleasing sound that seems to have something for everyone; Strong gospel overtones with serious rock/country guitar rifts and musicianship with his trademark vocals and lyrics that provide serious crossover appeal (evidenced by the wide success of his smash 80's hit "Finally" on the country charts), but for me, his ballads and emotionally honest "relationship" songs take the cake, (especially on "The Light Inside" CD, but all his CD's I know of are excellent, including his 'Best Of' compilation "After God's own Heart.") Delving deeply into forgiveness, love, mercy, and what it means to be a Christian and committed to your life partner, songs such as "Razor's edge," "We can Make it Right Tonight" and "Give me Tomorrow" lay bare the gritty determination all relationships require to succeed; in essence, songs tender enough to melt through even the hardest of hearts with hope, encouragement, and conviction to try again yet without being "sappy." Of course, for story songs with a message, "Sweet Jesus" really hits it out of the park, (and believe it or not this is NOT really a "gospel" song but has to do with a tragedy on the scale of a 9/11 from one person's perspective with a trick ending, can't say too much or I'll ruin it!). Then again, the rocking "Floodgates of Love" and "Heal me" are pretty hard to beat as well. But should it really be any surprise coming from such a dedicated and gifted songwriter, husband, and artist as Gary Chapman? Five stars! *****
One of the best voices in music today..........2001-12-13
I just love this guy's sound. He's been writing for everybody else for so long, I was really glad to see him make a solo project, and he certainly didn't disappoint me. The songs are poignant and honest, but it's his vocals that send you to the next level. Heartfelt and passionate, strong and tender at the same time, Gary knows how to communicate what's in his heart. "Give Me Tomorrow", "Treasure," "Where are the Broken Hearts," and Love Will Be Our Anchor" are a few of my faves from this set. If you love strong male vocals, coupled with tender melodies, you'll love this!
I feel the Spirit too..........2000-07-23
I am a fan of Gary who believes so much in worship. I feel the Spirit behind Gary's songs, how sold-out his heart is onto God which is revealed alot in the emotion and passion that he puts into his songs. I believe he is truely inlove with God and he happens to a mentor to me. I have always loved his songs and his wife's and I hope they enjoy their own company too. I long to have a wife that loves God passionatly like I do(and that probably sings too). Keep the lights on Gary and just keep shinning..
"Treasures, the treasure of the heart........1999-08-19
Treasures is my absolute favorite Gary Chapman song. It as though it was written and sang in the same spirit of David (King David) of the Bible, a man after God's own heart. I have great respect for Gary's music and career, considering that he is married to such a celebrity, yet he has a big enough heart to be humbled in his music. It is obvious that he is a changed man, from his youth. Treasure the relationship that we have in our Lord Jesus Christ.
A wonderful selection for any listener.......1999-07-18
Gary Chapman is a wonderfully talented musician with a rich, passionate voice. Unfortunately, his is often only distinguished as the husband of pop and Christian music singer Amy Grant, but he deserves as much or more recognition than she for his music. Though most of the music on this album is religous in nature, there are several secular and equally heart-wrenching love songs. His is music that will more the young and the old, the religious and not-so alike. Gary Chapman is one of the best-kept secrets of pop music (much to his own dismay, I am sure) and I doubt that anyone who loves good songs and powerful lyrics will regret purchasing his album.

Dazzling!.......2006-12-31
My introduction to Spock's Beard came several years ago when I chanced to hear "Snow". I liked that quite well, and so I added it to my ever-growing prog collection. Since then, I have gotten into SB, Neal Morse and many of Morse's side projects but as good as they all are, none of them match the power and beauty of The Light.
Prog fans should be delighted that this masterpiece has been re-issued. There is so much here, both musically and intellectually, that it towers above much of the prog that is on the market today. And that says a lot, because there is some very good progressive rock music being written and performed in the new century.
I like the whole CD, but my favorite cuts are the title cut and The Water. Morse's voice is often so Lennonesque that one would be forgiven for thinking that the Beatle has been reincarnated in the person of Neal Morse. One writer objected to the profanity in the FU/I'm Sorry sequence of The Water. While I'm opposed to the gratuitous use of profanity, it happens to fit here and is very powerful indeed. Listen to what Morse is singing and then tell me that there has never been a time when YOU felt that way. When that sequence is over, Morse is done with the profanity and moves on to another segment of the story. If you listen closely and try not to focus on the profane, you will find that The Light is a very dazzling and deeply spiritual recording.
Obviously I recommend this to all prog rock fans. I am a fan of the Inside/Out special edition packs and this one is no exception. When you buy this edition, you get an oversized CD folder that includes an attractive lyrics booklet, a small poster, and a couple of postcards. Get The Light, Special Edition while it remains available!
Stunning.......2006-11-06
As a long-time fan of prog bands like Caravan, Rush, and Dream Theater, I'm always looking for some new prog to get into. I dug LTE (Mike Portnoy of DT's side project) and also Transatlantic, Portnoy's supergroup with Neal Morse. I had heard of Morse because Portnoy always talked about how much he loves Spock's Beard. So I checked them out with this album...and was blown away.
This is their first album, but is light years ahead of debuts of most bands, let alone prog bands. The two epics on here, The Light and The Water, are simply STUNNING! Go the Way You Go is fantastic, and the closer On the Edge is a rocker...wish it was longer. This is one of the best prog albums I've ever heard and I'm definitely going to check out more Spock's Beard!
Didn't know there was Profanity; Too bad cuz my fav. of Spock's Beard MUSICALLY........2006-09-20
I have a theory that a musician's FIRST album is usually their best (ok, so that depends on the artist) -- my reasoning is that they spent the better part of their lives crafting their first album. By the second, it may well be good - and some may even improve with each successive production, but there's something special about the first release.
This album has a lot to offer. I'm giving 3 stars because I think it's "fair" considering so far it's only rec'd 5 from other listeners, and I was VERY sad to discover the profanity on the album, having had no such "warning" or advisory, etc. If you are inclined to not mind, or even prefer profanity in an album? You will likely rate higher the poetry of the lyrics, the artistry of the stylistic choices which go back and forth between rock opera (ala Savatage), progressive rock (ala Discipline - see "Unfolded Like Staircase"), and 90's indy-band sound.
Even with my prejudice against the use of the profane (one song with aggression screams out "F--- You!" several times), I was tempted to keep and simply edit my copy of the CD. Musically, I think this is innovative, very not "main stream" which I tend to reject, anyway, and carries all the deeper spiritual/philosophical elements I tend to look for in a great CD.
Hope my comments help you make an informed decision!
And that for a debute.......2006-03-07
This is the album with what it all began. And I tell you in advance, debut albums as this one are not made anymore. Its an extrordinary piece of music in every possible way. As the reviewer above I do not thing only The Light & The water (indeed thier first epic that runs over 20 min.) are good songs. I think all 4 tranks are of equally quality and all masterpieces. But no matter how good this album is, that cannot be said of all the other albums. Certainly not of the material they made after Neal Left. Too bad, Neal had to go his own way. If you like this listen to Neal's solowork, but even more to Transatlantic.
Neal Morse is a god.......2005-06-16
This is Spocks Beard's first album and it has some awsome stuff. It may take a little while to get into at first but after 5 or so listens I just couldn't get enough. It is basically the same as the original release but it is remastered so the quality is lightyears better than the original release. If you like Pink Floyd, Yes or Rush, you should definitaly get this album and along with every other Spock's release up to Feel Euphoria. The Light and The Water are the two most notable tracks on the album, but the two other ones are good also. The Water is their first epic, and it is truly amazing. The light is also great, really interesting melodies and riffs. The song(and the album) may sound cheesy at first but keep listening, it will grow on you. But if your a fan of progressive music, nothing should sound cheesy. ;)
