3 out of 5 stars Not impressive.......2007-06-10

There are about 3 really good songs on this album. The rest of it is pretty lame. This band has the potential to be good, but they don't relly pull it off.

5 out of 5 stars hell yea.......2007-03-25

personly i love this band the lyircs are awsome, the singing is great(love screamo!!!),the guitars, drums etc. ROCK!!!! so whats not to like? i think nothing when i first got this cd i liked this band alot from what music i had heard, now i love them....so if you like screamo (they really dont scream that much) if you like that kind of music like i do then you should get this cd or the other one i heard it was good to....if not then what can i say you suck?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-11-09

This cd is my favorite and is amazing! The vocals are awesome. I really like each song and Emily has to be my favorite !!!!

5 out of 5 stars More addicting than heroine ;).......2006-08-11

1-Soliloquy: Intro. Pretty good intro considering I hate intros.
2-The One Armed Boxer Vs. The Flying Guillotine: I love this song. It's really a great way to kick off the CD, very fast paced song that caught my attention.
3-Note To Self: This isn't my favorite song, but it's probably one of their most well known. It's definitely not the best off the album but I love Sonny's vocals on it. Once I listen to it I love it, but compared to the rest of the album it's not very good, which is sort of unfair since it's still a good song.
4-I liked you better when you were naked on the internet: This is my favorite song, a lot of people don't like it and think it's boring, but I just love listening to Sonny's voice without the distraction of instruments and screaming. Yes those things are awesome, but Sonny's voice is more amazing. & It's a good song lyrically wise too, but is a short song. (Under two minutes.)
5-Featuring Some Of Your Favorite Words: A great song, another one of my favorites. (That's not saying too much since I love every single song on this album because they're all great.)This has a bit more instruments than some people might like, but not enough to ruin the song or anything. My favorite line is about 2 minutes into the song when Sonny goes, "No I can't breathe".
6-Emily: This is an amazingly sweet song. Even better; it's acoustic. Sonny's vocal job is amazing. It might seem like I overuse that word, but Sonny is a really really really great singer and he deserves credit. :) The only bad thing about this song is its length. I play it over-and-over because it's too short, only 2:39 and it goes by fast when you get caught up in the lyrics. This is my favorite of my favorites. It's short and sweet. Really sweet.
7-Secrets Don't Make Friends: It's a great song, but sort of disappointing after hearing Emily right before it. If a different artist had this song, it'd probably be considered their best, but this is From First To Last we're talking about! :)
8-Populace In Two: It starts out sort of slow, but picks its pace up a bit. I know a lot of people sort of dislike this song, because it's a bit slow, but it's got some lines that stick in your head. It's got a bit of an instrumental in it, but it's still a good instrumental.
9-Kiss Me, I'm contagious: The lyrics make it an ideal scene song, (Bang, Bang, Guns go bang) but this came out before the scene got really huge. It's still a pretty decent song.
10-Minuet: A minute long acoustic instrumental, I usually hate instrumentals, but I actually like this one a lot.
11-Ride The Wings Of Pestilence: A song about murder. What could feed and tame teen angst any better? Even if murder isn't your scene (no pun intended) it's a great song, I love it a lot, even when I'm not mad, so it's a great song you can enjoy anytime. Again, Sonny does some great vocals.
12: Hidden Track: This song is great J they're making fun of rap/hip hop in it, & it's a really great song. Another one of my favorites, although it disappoints me that Sonny didn't do the rap, it doesn't ruin the song though. "Hiding cameras in your bedroom, girl I know what you've done!"

Overall this is a great album the only one I listen to anymore. I've only had it for a month, but I haven't listened to any other CD since. This CD doesn't get old, and is just an amazing CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-07-24

After adding 15 year old Sonny Moore as their lead singer, From First To Last headed to the studios to release their debut full length. The album is a great emo/post-hardcore album. It has it's strong points and has very few weak points. I would have to say though, this album is not as good as their second full length Heroine, which has more of an edge. Anyway, the highlights on this one are The One Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Gullitine, Note To Self, I Liked You Better Before You Were Naked On The Internet (one of the slower songs on the album along with Emily), Emily (which is probably one of my top 3 favorites on this album), and Ride The Wings of Pestilence. Overall, for fans of Senses Fail and other screamo bands, you may like this, although it's mostly a harder version of emo, and there isn't a whole lot of screaming. This album has great singing drumming and song writing. You won't be disapointed.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

4 out of 5 stars love among the ruins.......2007-07-08

a really provocative, interestingly written and performed Grandaddy special that manages to touch on some heartbreaking topics in a surprisingly melodic and hypnotic way. Never fear: there is great humor here, as well. I'm not sure that there's anyone else in rock today who so touchingly references human hopefulness in the midst of environmental decline in such a moving and infectious way.

Grandaddy are not the same as Flaming Lips, as some misguided reviewers would have you think. They are/were something truly unique and enjoyable who will live on in their substantial repertoire of great music that evokes so many emotions and soothes the soul in multitudinous ways. Long live Grandaddy!!!

No one did else did melodies like this.

4 out of 5 stars Divertissement.......2006-07-09

So much on this EP--it's hard to complain. Jason's mature songwriting, with his melodic gift and sense of balance, is present (Pull the Curtains, Cinderland...). His capacity for romantic/cosmic soundscape is present (everything). And his uncompromising voice. Like others in the reviews above, I have some problems with the final three songs. Florida is just annoying. Goodbye needs a push in the final minute or two. Valley Fudge is marred by the cursing--not simply a rudeness, but an intellectual miss (If you want to leave, dude, get in the car and drive away already). Jason's strong suit is loss, and he ordinarily demonstrates wisdom. As for suburbia...yes, there is much to dislike...but then it has its uses (safety, organization). But those sounds!

5 out of 5 stars Not an album for pretentious twats.......2006-04-24

I can't believe the rubbish I've been reading about this EP. It's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't, if Grandaddy had brought out an EP Facsimile of 'Sumday' the reviews would have all read the same 'not breaking any new ground' etc. etc. For those of us that aren't Prententious, Elitist Twats and actually 'like Music' in all it's various forms this EP has much to offer. It's a journey of contrasts in which Grandaddy digress in unexpected ways, i.e. the much maligned 'Cinderland' & 'Florida'. Though to 'Digress' in this case is a wonderful change from the 'converstion' we all just had with 'Sumday'. Grandaddy do a excellent job of serving up an EP of great texture and extremes, so effectively, it's a pity it didn't continue this pattern to 11 or 12 songs to create what may have been a very worthy follow-up album to 'Sumday'. It may have been treated differently to the 'Disposable Status' that these Critics love to Pigeon hole these EP's into. Real Music enthusiasts are looking for Music to explore and enjoy, and if you can ignore 'Critics' for the sake of 'Critics' you will warm to this EP that is perfectly accessable to those who don't have to stroke their ego by being dismissive.

4 out of 5 stars My First Ever Review.......2005-12-14

Okay, so this is my first review, but I was forced to do it because reviews for this EP make me so angry. I believe people are misunderstanding the point of this album. The album was inspired by a lifted pickup truck Jason Lytle saw at Lake Tahoe with a license plate that read "ToddZilla". Some of the more uncharacteristic songs on the album are inspired by the thought of what this "Todd Zilla" guy must be like. Thus you end up with songs like Pull The Curtains with it's explicit lyrics and Florida, which are meant to be written from Todd's viewpoint, not Jason Lytle. With that said, the album is quite solid with the exception of A Valley Son and Cinderland, which are certainly B-Side material for Grandaddy, thus the 4 stars. Give songs like Goodbye a listen all the way through and tell me that outro alone (at 3:20) is not worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Pull the curtains on the last 3 songs, already!.......2005-12-04

Too bad Grandaddy is breaking up, when this EP shows that they were shifting back to the brilliant Sophtware Slump era. Don't get me wrong: I liked Sumday in spite of all those complainers out there, but songs like Cinderland, A Valley Son and At My Post are a beautiful reminder that the Slump-sound was brilliant and that they still have enough imagination to exploit this sound far more often.

Despite the aforementioned songs, great opener Pull The Curtains is reminiscent of Sumday's rocky fun. Catchy and sunny, despite the lyrics. Unfortunately, not all this sweepy fun is continued, like in the gruesome Florida. Sure it's over the top, out there and innovative, but that doesn't mean it's sufferable for the human ear. The other two quiet leftovers F' The Valley Fudge and Gooodbye are throwaway-songs, that are cheesy as well as they are boring. Like Florida they add nothing to the first 4 songs on the EP and feel like complete filler.

All in all, a great warming up for the upcoming album.

5 out of 5 stars Blood stains, hemoglobin ... .......2006-11-22

I'm hard pressed to say which of two tracks is my favorite. Deception is awesome, but so is Hemoglobin. Listening to the music on this disk allowed me to feel what it might be like to be a vampire, to enjoy the taste and hunger for blood. I don't play Vampire: The Masquerade or even any other roleplay as a vampire, but this CD made me feel like I could.

4 out of 5 stars Appropriate for V:tM, as well as for general unlife..........2005-11-13

While I've heard a few tracks from this album, I'm still counting the coins to pay for it and its shipping.

To K. Owen, who focuses his review on how Vampire: the Masquerade has ruined the goth scene... I'd like to point out that this game isn't about being, or pretending that one is, a goth.

If some roleplayers have been attracted to the goth scene as a result of the game, perhaps it is because the themes of the game that they empathise with most, appear in some gothic music as well. Or, perhaps the goth scene, at least superficially, presents itself as suitable to the game setting.

I would think you should be glad if the game has inspired more people to identify with at least some elements of your *culture,* rather than harping on maintaining its purity, as you happen to define it. As with many subcultures, certain "imitations" of them are not imitations at all; rather, people who have been inspired into similar activities, but for completely different reasons.

In my case, I don't give a flying fang if the vampiric music I enjoy also grants me Exclusive and Optimum Goth Society Status; I like it for its themes of eternity, madness, politics and so on.

On whether this album does these themes justice, I will post at a later date...

3 out of 5 stars Good music, bad game........2005-10-30

As a real old-school goth- one who was listening to gothic music and dressing in goth-style thrift clothes in 1983- I have to say this is a good music compilation. Each song is a good representative of the goth subculture, though a bit too modern to be a real sampler of goth.

The unfortunate thing is that this is tied to that horrible play-acting game "Vampire The Masquerade" which was responsible for transforming goth from the punk-bred subculture it was into some stupid vampire cosplay cult for several years, not to mention introducing a lot of poseurs and non-goths to the goth subculture. Essentially, VtM helped ruin the goth scene by causing a lot of dweebs to dress like vampires and run around thinking they were goth because they liked VtM.

If you're into VtM, that's fine. That does not automatically make you goth. Likewise, being goth does not make you a vampire. Listening to this music and GENUINELY enjoying and understanding it puts you one step closer to being goth, though.

I'd recommend anyone interested in goth to avoid this album (unless it's free). Instead, pick up any of the numerous Cleopatra Records samplers, or just bite the bullet and buy a Bauhaus album (to start). Listening to singles from a particular band is not very goth. Part of the point of goth was that we listened to THE WHOLE ALBUM, and not just the singles from it. Singles are for Top-40 trendsters and bands that get radio play. A GOOD band can carry a whole album with a solid theme and a decent story, and doesn't need the radio to have a following.

Seriously- You can like this music, but don't think that dressing like a vampire (or The Crow) and listening to this CD makes you goth. It doesn't, in the same way that listening to Phish doesn't suddenly make you a hippie.

4 out of 5 stars I have a split personality, and this CD made me realize it!.......2005-03-03

Ok, I absolutely LOVE this CD. I am no where NEAR being anything of a goth epicurian, and after listening to this CD I immediately looked for each artists' websites and/or music clips online. Sadly, I didn't find anything else that really peaked my ears like this CD did. I have to hand it to the complitation team, they did an AMAZING job of picking out songs that - I feel - were of a specific aura and putting them in one spot. MAKE MORE!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Mmm! Chocked full of AB positive and 80's-goth goodness!.......2004-07-30

I have a fondness for this album because I am a big roleplayer, and this album can be great background music for a game of Vampire if you're into the 80's goth rock style of vampire, which I know a lot of people are.

Tracks like "Fall No More" and "Deception" are really well written and make for fantastic casual listening, not just ambiance music. Songs like "Bloodsucker 2000" or "Cold From Fever" are laughably bad.

This album is for goth enthusiasts, but I venture to say that others might find something they like here, too. If 80's-style vampire dance music is your thing, for god's sake- get this album and suck some blood! Otherwise, you might try a nice merlot and the soundtrack to "Interview with the Vampire" instead.

3 out of 5 stars A Valiant Try.......2000-05-10

Dame Janet is clearly the greatest postwar mezzo-soprano the British isles have ever produced. She had just about everything one could wish for in a singer: taste, sensitivity, passion, nuance, acting ability, superb vocal control, flexibility, an instantly recognizable timbre, and a dedication to championing lesser known works. She is the very definition of the serious-minded, committed artist who luckily also had great natural ability. She performs at her usual unassailable standards on this recording but somehow things don't add up to much. Perhaps the choice of material was to blame. The Argento songs are of that modern, atonal variety that, with the exception of a few original bars, sound pretty much like every other modern, atonal piece you've ever heard. And their straightforward passions don't evoke the cerebral, luminous Virginia Woolf at all (although, the liner notes indicate that the composer sought to exempt himself from criticism by claiming that he intended not to evoke Woolf specifically but suffering womankind in general). The Wolf Spanish lieder are instantly forgettable (he's one composer, along with Brahms, whose perhaps too subtle charms I have long been deaf to). Things perk up with the concluding French airs, but the Argento songs must have left an unpleasant residue because Baker is here uncharacteristically heavy and emphatic where she should be light and elliptical. By comparison, Regine Crespin's recording of Apres un Reve is appropriately dreamily sensuous whereas Baker's here is a tad emotionally overwrought and puritannical, as if the song were about Dido or Mary Stuart's dream. There's a currently unavailable recording of Baker singing Ravel, Chausson, and Delage that is one of the best things she's ever done, full of light arabesques and the right amount of French ivresse. Until that recording becomes available, I would not suggest this as a viable alternative.

5 out of 5 stars Miraculous.......2000-03-30

Obviously the art songs are all at the superior level you expect from Dame Janet, but you will be blown away by the Argento. A stunning miracle of breath, technique, dramatic expressiveness, and emotional force. And it was recorded live- few other singers would dare these feats of phrasing in a studio, let alone in front of an audience. Don't worry that it's a live recording- the audience is utterly under Dame Janet's spell; it may sound cliched, but time absolutely stops while she is singing.

A humbling experience for anyone who deludes him/herself that he/she is a singer-- but this is a MUST MUST MUST have!

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

      5 out of 5 stars A real find.......2001-04-26

This is a terrific recording of some familar and some little-known American composers. The most substantial work in this varied collection is certainly the Argento setting of selections from the diary of Virginia Woolf. Mary Ann Hart must be just about the ideal interpretter of these powerful songs. Great vocalism, great musicianship, and a special ability to do what the music demands without short-changing the words - which is essential to the success of this cycle. The entire CD - while varied both stylistically an in terms of the quality of compositions - is consistent in the brilliance of the performances and in the appeal of these songs. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in contemporary American art songs, or who just loves great singing.
