Rush Takes A Drummer And Heads North!.......2007-07-09
Right away you can hear the contribution that Neil Peart makes as he enters the drummer's seat on Rush's second album. Gone is the mediocre typical rock drummer John Rutsey. Here to stay is the lyricist/drummer that would help to make Rush one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Thanks to Neil the lyrics move away from the Ooh Baby mentality of their debut album into newer, more thought-provoking directions. Let's take a look at the songs, shall we?
Anthem - Straight up rocker with very cool lyrics. Geddy wails and the groove is laid down. Tight, short, pumping. One of the great old Rush tunes.
Best I Can - A leftover from the first Rush album? Maybe. This was written by Geddy alone. It rocks, but it misses Neil's literate touch.
Beneath, Between & Behind - A great song written by Alex and Neil. Alex throws in all the licks here. Geddy belts out the lyrics with passion.
By-Tor & The Snow Dog - The first of many multi-part songs. This is the first glimpse of things to come. This song grooves so f*cking much! An all-time Rush great.
Fly By Night - A signature Rush song of the first order. This, along with Finding My Way, In The Mood, and Working Man would remain Rush staples for a long time to come. Excellent!
Making Memories - One of the first songs I ever learned on acoustic guitar. This song is killer. Kick out the jams.
Rivendell - The soft spot on the album. The nod to Tolkein is cool but this song drags.
In The End - This is a good song but it, like Rivendell, drags. Another Geddy/Alex penned tune that could be a holdover from the first album.
Overall, as the band is adapting to the inclusion of Neil Peart very well, the Zeppelin-influenced sound would fall to the wayside for the Rush signature sound. Even though their next album would blow up in their faces, Rush would continue to grow by leaps and bounds in the following years. Fly By Night is a great stepping stone album. A definite must for old fans! Newer Rush fans might want to start a little up the line at 2112 or Permanent Waves.
Dig it!
Rush at their most Rocking!!!.......2007-06-01
This album at least deserves 4 1/2 stars. Anthem is one of Rush's most rocking older tunes. I absolutely love Best I Can; it's a simple song about playing rock and roll and having a good time. It doesn't get any better than that! Beneath, Between, and Behind also totally rocks! And who doesn't like By Tor & the Snow Dog? - talk about an epic masterpiece. In The End is one of Rush's simplest tunes, but it absolutely rocks! I even love Making Memories where they break out the acoustic guitars. The only track that doesn't do much for me is Rivendell, but there's one of those mellow filler tunes on every early Rush album. Okay, I realize this isn't a real cerebral synopsis of this album and I doubt anyone will find it helpful. I've basically just used the word "rocking" several times to describe this collection of songs, but that's the beauty of Fly By Night; it's just Rush rocking out and having a great time. This album is the bridge between the early Zeppelin inspired stuff from the first album and the really prog heavy stuff that would characterize their work in the late seventies and early eighties. Don't get me wrong, I love the more serious thematic elements of the later albums, but this is Rush just letting loose which is so refreshing to hear. Geddy's vocals are in top form on this album, especially on Anthem. You've still got the heady lyrics by Peart, but there's also those romping tunes about just rocking out! This album has it all. It's kind of the adolescent phase of the band where they were maturing musically and trying to find their sound. I know their later works are superior to FBN in many ways, but I can't deny that I still enjoy listening to this album more than most.
rush's sophmore effort.......2007-05-29
Rush always has variety and this one without a doubt does. From
hard to soft rock with grace. Let yourself go into the music and
Fly By Night. Lyrics and musicianship will more than please any fan.
Rush.......2007-05-12
I am used to listening to Rush in their older years but this is one of their earlier albums. despite the fact that Geddy Lee's voice could go extremely high back and I'm used to the newer stuff they are still freakin' awesome.
solid album.......2007-04-26
I'm not sure why most people don't consider Fly By Night one of the bands best albums. I've heard everything Rush did from the debut all the way to the mid 80's, but there's something about this album in particular that really stands out in my mind.
With that said, I'm not a big fan of the title song. It's just a short, speedy little pop tune that harmlessly goes by, with me only giving it a second thought because it's such a popular song.
Ignoring that song, the rest of the tunes really get me going. I think this album is a significant improvement over the debut in terms of the band finding their classic hard rock/space rock progressive sound (and sticking with it until the mid 80's). It started right here, folks.
"Anthem" is one of the catchiest rockers you will ever hear, and "By-tor and the Snow Dog" closely follows with its many multiple musical passages. "In the End" is another major highlight for me personally and the musical section at the end totally rules.
In all honesty, it's hard to tell which Rush album is really my favorite. They have a few other ones including Farewell to Kings that might be at the same level of musical consistency and enjoyment. But Fly By Night will show you exactly where Rush really took off.

should be zero stars.......2006-01-21
This was the worst spent money on a cd ...EVER! As a Rush fan for many (30) years , this is an abomination of their music. It would have been a little better if there was no percussion ....this guy was horrible. The drumming sounds like a junior high snare drummer that knows one little ratta-tat-tat and plays the same thing on every song. The terrible tone and playng of this drummer sounds like popcorn popping in the background. The group as a whole are just not a tight group. This sounds like a practice session that got recorded while the annoying fiddlesticker was doodling. This bunch obviosly understands nothing about dynamics. You will be listening along and then there is an abrupt stop.....now here comes a disjointed pipe organ solo that doesn't sound like the same song. This happens several times in different songs. I can't even listen to this..sheer torture. This is an abuse of the fans of Rush and yes, this is a severe review. I fell like my money was stolen on this one.
Don't bother.......2005-03-10
This is just terrible. The drums sound like a kids starter set.
absolute cash-in garbage.......2005-03-01
I will make this as plain as possible: this CD has no redeeming value of any kind. It is simply an assembly-line "fake" tribute album with an acoustic guitarist, keyboard player, violinist and drummer (?) playing the intro to a Rush tune, then going off on uninspired counterpoint explorations for a bit before returning to the song at the end. On EVERY SINGLE SONG.
The shifts in style are frustrating and agonizing. I barely made it all the way through the disc before I put it in the "recycle at the used CD store" pile.
Now, if Apolalyptica wanted to do a Rush tribute on four cellos, I'd pay big money for that.
Special hatred goes out to engineer and drummer Eric Helmuth, who plays annoyingly in every tune on what sounds like an old high school marching band snare drum and a cereal box full of toilet paper for a bass drum. Dude, you're the freakin' engineer! Couldn't you at least make your own drumming sound halfway decent?
Bottom line: what could have been a potentially interesting concept to a select few fans is fumbled on first down on this irritating "tribute" that was cynically calculated to seperate gullible Rush fans from their cash. Don't fall for it.
Good to toss on when the old folks visit.......2004-12-26
This "baroque" tribute to Rush is in some ways better and in some ways worse than the other classical-themed Rush tribute, "Exit Stage Right: A String Quartet Tribute to Rush." It's better in that it features more instrumentation than just strings, but it's arguably worse because the adaptations of Rush songs aren't quite as faithful as on "ESR."
I don't know how truly "baroque" these renditions are, but they sound nice while going by. Each song adaptation borrows the melody of the original, but often ventures off into other melodies and themes. And while I'm no classical music expert, I did notice that both "Limelight" and "Madrigal" steal liberally from J.S. Bach's "Two and Three-Part Inventions." The CD closes with "Flickering," an original compostion written for this project... although what the song has in common with either baroque music or Rush music can only be imagined.
As I've often said of "ESR" to my fellow Rush fans, this is a good CD to play when your parents or grandparents or in-laws are visiting. You get your Rush fix and the older folks don't get blown away by the hard-rocking originals. And let's face it - Rush's "Moving Pictures" isn't exactly the perfect soundtrack for a quiet dinner party with friends. Toss on this CD and/or the "ESR" CD for those times when you wanna hear Rush, but the situation calls for quieter music.

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Exquisite tenor singing and songs of incredible beauty.......2001-10-02
My acquaintance with Sergei Larin was made through his performances of Verdi, Puccini and verismo works. And I have always been impressed by his beauty of tone and phrasing. It was a nicest surprise to discover that he could offer performances of such level of artistry in the chamber repertoire. This disc alone raised my admiration of Larin, one of the best tenors on operatic stages these days.
First of all, these songs require broader performance most of the time. They are passionate quasi-operatic works with a most evocative and sometimes melancholic atmosphere. Larin pours his heart and soul in these pieces. His tone is honeyed throughout, powerful when it opens up, but he also produce the most extatic soft tones when required. The wide palette of tone colouring is quite helpful to differentiate each song from the others and his care with the text is so amazing that, even if you don't know the text or are not Russian-speaking (as I am not), you won't really miss it, so powerful is Larin's ability to create the right mood. If you have any doubt, you should try "In the Silence of the Secret Night" - a most delightful song.
Last but not least, Eleonora Bekova is the amazing pianist who not only shines in the sometimes virtuosistic piano playing preditably required by Rachmaninov, but also responds sensitively to Larin's singing throughout. A nice example of interplay between admirable musicians.
