Your ears won't believe it !.......2003-03-14
Very young Goebel recorded this Cd for Archiv In 1977-80. The new collection "Blue Archiv" did a superb job in the digitally remasterig of the old tracs. The sound is rich and deep. The muic is played with the Goebel way : full of frenzied vitality.
I just can agree with the Gramophone critic "This is one of the very best Vivaldi recitals I have heard for a long while."
At this low price, this Cd is a must. You will enjoy it !

Customer Reviews:
An inadequate work given with great conviction.......2007-01-07
The review below is civilized and tolerant almost to a fault. I, too, anticipated something rare and fascinating from Pfitzner's masterpiece, which has a strong stage history in Germany but almost zero in the U.S. But in my case the expectations weren't fulfilled--this is ultra-conservative music that shows not the slightest influence of the twentieth centruy. The idiom resembles seamless, uninspired movie music, assuming the movie in question has almost no action and endless duets and monologues on arcane subjects of interest only to Jesuits and historicans of the Vatican's dicta on church music.
That said, the performance is a knockout. This could well be Fischer-Dieskau's most impressive opera portrayal (he had a habit of excelling in oddball operas--see Mathis der Maler); Gedda, fasbaender, and the rest of the cast sing with equal conviction. Kubelik is close to an ideal conductor. And yet there really is no drama here for the listener who can't see the stage. Maybe that's the secret of Palestrina--it needs a stage production to capture the eye. That's true of Die Frau ohne Schatten, Die Tote Stadt, and other operas that are congested and over-composed--they must come alive visually to reveal their potential.
Underrated opera: great performance.......2005-08-17
Palestrina was an opera that fascinated me long before I heard it. From all I'd read, it seemed to be one of a select group of operas, dealing with the actual process of artistic creation (Benvenuto Cellini, Die Meistersinger, Mathis der Mahler, Death in Venice to name but a few). Someone, after a performance of Parsifal in Bayreuth, once also described it to me as 'Parsifal without the jokes' - a phrase attributed to several pieces and not true in this case as there are quite a lot of jokes, albeit German jokes, in Act 2. The music, I was told, purported to be post-Wagnerian conservative but well made. The Preludes to all three acts I heard fairly early on and they whetted my appetite even more - Parsifalian simplicity in the first, thrilling energy in the second and sublime resignation in the third.
Then this Kubelik recording came along and I found all my hopes and expectations matched or bettered. Yes, it is dramatically flawed - the scene between Borromeo and Palestrina in the First Act is too long and Act 2 is dramatically very far removed from the two outer acts, brimming over with characters none of whom, apart from a brief appearance by Borromeo, appear in the other two acts. Act 3 is proportionally very short. Nevertheless, it does hang together in its own way (witness the Covent Garden production of a few years ago). And musically it is a profound experience.
Pfitzner was not necessarily a very likeable man: his politics came a lot closer to the Nazis than either Richard Strauss's or Furtwangler's, for example - probably closer to Karajan's. And his music was also pretty conservative (with a small 'c') - not so far from Strauss, closer still to Reger though much more interesting. Indeed he felt himself on something of a mission to preserve the Great Tradition of High German Art - Sachs's Heil'ge Deutsches Kunst if you like. But within the confines that he set himself, he wrote some really wonderful stuff. Late Romantic harmonies (nothing too frightening) with some superb melodic invention gives you an idea of the style. The whole sequence in which Palestrina writes his great polyphony-saving Mass, inspired by visions of his dead wife and angels (yes, I know it sounds mawkish, but it works) is superb. Pfitzner handles a huge cast of soloists in Act 2 with superb dexterity and energy as discussions descend to rows to battles and finally to a riot that is ruthlessly put down. The very end of the opera is inspired. Left alone in his moment of triumph by Pope and Cardinal, son and pupil and by the cheering crowds in the street, the old composer's hands begin to improvise on the keyboard of his organ - fade to silence and to black. This is great opera and deserves to be better known.
And, in this recording, all the performers play it as if they believe exactly that. The supremely versatile Gedda sings the title-role with all the fervour, the passion and ultimately the resignation that it demands. The other substantial part, Cardinal Borromeo, is taken by the ubiquitous Fischer-Dieskau and he gives one of his great performances; obstinate, angry, dangerous, sympathetic by turns as the score and the text demand. That long solo in Act 1 that can easily outstay its welcome: here it is completely involving and dramatic. The numerous clergy and politicians at the Council of Trent in Act 2 are cast with real strength throughout. And Kubelik's conducting is masterful, allowing the score to breathe and take its time without ever getting stagnant and giving real drive and energy to the more urgent pages.
If you have anything of a taste for German romantic opera, if you enjoy Strauss's operas for example, I do urge you to try Pfitzner's masterpiece.

Inimitable and amazingly powerful.......2006-09-19
The discovery of the Icelandic composer Jon Leifs (1899-1968) continues with this release featuring several works for orchestra and vocalists, including the thrilling Icelandic Cantata. The seven movement cantata was composed by Leifs around 1930 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the establishment of the Icelandic parliament. This is a captivating work which mixes the reflective with the aggressive. It should be noted that the cantata is bit more melodic in comparison to with the typical Leifs composition, but the elements that make Leifs' music among the most distinctive of the twentieth century are all present. Such elements include the incorporation of irregular rhythms, parallel fifths and lots of percussion, giving the music a primal sound. The noble, yet ancient-sounding, slow movements are quite moving and contain some interesting orchestral effects, including heavy use of tremolos and the incorporation of a boys choir. The powerful final section of the cantata, on the other hand, depicts "danger at sea" and is propelled forward by pounding timpani and angular accents. The cantata is among my favorite of Leifs' compositions. The fact that the cantata is a bit more traditional (in comparison to Leifs' other compositions), makes it an excellent introduction to Leifs' style.
Also on the program is a work for wind ensemble, percussion, violas and double basses called "Vikingasvar" ("Viking's Answer"). Apparently, this piece represents Leifs' response to his rejected application for the role of administrator of the Pingvellir national park (located North of Reykjavik), where Leifs had hoped to compose new works in relative isolation. Although, the work only lasts four minutes, these are among the most intense four minutes of music this listener has ever experienced. The piece is a primordial blend of craggy brass accents, pounding percussion and bizarre instrumental combinations. I particularly enjoy the juxtaposition of the contrabass bassoon below a flutter tonguing (I think) flute in the central section of the piece. Those who know Leifs know that he enjoys using extreme contrasts such as this.
Another favorite on the program is "Vorvisa" ("Spring Song"). The program notes indicate that this is a "light-hearted" and "frivolous" piece. I suppose these adjectives are used in a relative sense here, as despite the sprightly melody, the listening experience is still quite intense. The melodic content of his piece, I believe, bares some similarities to John Williams' "March of the Ewoks" except that music of Leifs is far more martial and volcanic (that is, the music often erupts forth in an explosive manner). The piece begins with a forceful rendition of the melody by the chorus. This theme becomes more powerful at each repetition and is colored by piccolos and side drums. After a meditative central section the piece concludes with fiery reprisal of the original theme by the full chorus and orchestra. The thrilling final measures of this piece emphasize the importance of alternating meter within Leifs' music through, as a series of irregular spaced accents bring the work to an astonishing close.
Another piece on the program is an overture called "Landsyn" ("Landfall") composed for male chorus and orchestra. Leifs intended for this overture to depict the impression a voyager would have approaching Iceland from the sea. With its quiet, atmospheric introduction building to an earthshaking climax symbolizing the imposing Icelandic landscape as seen from the sea, this piece would be at home with Leifs' violent tone poems: Hekla, Hafis, Detifoss and Geysir (all previously released on BIS and highly recommended by this listener). This is a piece to turn up, just be careful you don't damage your speakers! The remaining pieces on the program (also for orchestra and vocalists) are never less than interesting and provide additional insight into Leifs' style, although these pieces are probably not quite as exciting as the pieces I have mentioned above.
In conclusion, this is a must of Leifs fans and would make a good entry point for those adventurous enough to make the plunge into this obscure, yet powerful and rewarding music. Although I do not think that Leifs' music would appeal to all classical music fans, I personally love it. Inspired by the dramatic Icelandic landscape and ancient Icelandic harmonies and meters, Leifs' compositions are some of the most unique and fierce music you will ever hear. Fans of off the beaten track repertoire would do well to acquire at least one Leifs disc (whether it be this release or one of the discs featuring one of the tone poems mentioned above) to determine if this is something you love, or something you hate (I don't think many people will find themselves on the middle ground). Otherwise, you could be missing out on an amazing listening experience.
Great music, fantastic engineering, fabulous playing and a generously filled program - this release is a winner all around as far as I am concerned. Highest recommendation!!

I love this album!.......2006-01-05
I've always enjoyed Gudrun Gut's style of music, ever since the first Malaria! albums back in the 80's. This one tops them in in maturity and orchestration. The tracks have a very atmospheric ambient electronic feel to them. For instance, 'Butterfly' is a very beautiful song and has a good dancable beat and dreamlike qualities.
This is a two disc set, with the second CD of remixes. Plus the three music videos on the first disc makes this an excellet buy for the money.

Album Description
It can hardly be believed that I Put a Record On is Gudrun Gut's debut album as a solo artist, considering her key contributions in the Berlin musical underground. Not only is she label-head of Monika Enterprise, she is a founding member of the Berlin bands Mania D., Malaria! and Matador and long before the Wall fell she was a member of Einstürzende Neubauten. With so many references to her credit, it's no wonder that an atmosphere of delicate diversity is built on this record. The listener is unconsciously pulled along into the moods and associations evoked by Gudrun Gut and the way she plays with different sources. Gudrun's preferred style is a kind of minimal techno with a warm sound and a dark timbre. Experienced musician Gudrun Gut allows her new album to radiate with beautiful melancholy like a strong perfume - an invitation to let oneself fall backwards into her warm pulse.
Customer Reviews:
Genius.......2007-06-13
This album is incredible. Gudrun Gut was in not one, not two, but THREE incredible bands and then she puts this out. I'm addicted to it honestly. It's incredibly sultry and danceable.

if you're into Orff style things, this one is the culmination.
enjoy. I certainly did.
Perfect........2004-07-01
If you've enjoyed Carl Orff, this is his legitimate successor.
Nicholas Lens is perfectionism not over but cross professionalism.
This is one of the few CDs these days that you ought to pay
money for. It is really worth every cent.
Expensive!.......2003-11-12
I believe this recording is very good. Still $999.99 for a used copy seems quite expensive. Or $1,002.48 with shipping - as I just found out. Don't you think?
exciting.......2003-03-04
This is very compelling, dynamic music, & so idiosyncratic. Definitely unique, & moves in a very modern & brilliant way, especially with the interesting ways it makes use of different vocal lines...
An Incredible Merger of Rock & Opera.......2002-04-16
When I first heard this piece, it reminded me of the soprano solo from "The Fifth Element." This CD spans quite a range of music, from beautiful laments for lost loved ones to almost annoying choruses harping about the darker side of death. Unlike most requiems, which are straight laments, this one is more of a commentary on death. This one gets better with each listen. I particularly recommend the second-to-last track, Agnus Purus -- what an incredible choral movement and key change at the end. I could easily see this as the foundation for a movie soundtrack, or a new TV drama.
