Todd Snider really knows how to work a room. As a storytelling troubadour for the slacker set, he takes inspiration from the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker (as he explains in one of this solo concert album's deadpan introductions) and Robert Earl Keen and applies it to a selection of shaggy-dog stories, talking blues, and slices-of-life gone askew. One of his earliest signature tunes, "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues," has now outlived grunge by too long, but the more recent "Waco Moon," inspired by the death of guitartist Eddy Shaver, shows that Snider's songwriting is good for a whole lot more than laughs. Some of his most engaging songs such as "Beer Run" seem to have practically written themselves, while others such as "Tension" and "Statistician's Blues" sound like songs that were just waiting to be written. It's an integral part of Snider's engaging appeal that he makes it all seem so effortless. As with Keen, the challenge for Snider is balancing the easy laughs with his more serious progression as a songwriter. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Quality! Powerful Performances! PERFECTION!.......2007-04-02

It wasn't until I decided to download free music by Todd Snider that I realized I needed to buy every album he has ever made. Little by little I discover a near missed opportunity - now found. Near Truths is the place to start a TS collection. When I first heard this I wondered where the heck have I been all these years? How did these few artists get overlooked during that time? I guess the ninties was my version of the sixties. This guy exemplifies what yesterday is today. The real "new breed" of America. Not many ever "get it" but this one does.
A real treat and
I predict soon to be huge
"the singer"
will be very well known and widely accepted.

cheers to Todd Snider for a well dressed future
your fifteen years of not working finally paid off!

Wait a minute!
this album plays almost as a greatest hits collection
it's very well done and nicely sequenced. A rarity for today.

This is classic Todd Snider. The stories alone are worth buying the CD. The songs are very good and tell some moving stories.

5 out of 5 stars Best out there.......2005-05-17

Todd Snider is THE BEST singer-songwriter out there. He combination of sad, funny, and introspective songs puts him in a league by himself. Most hard core fans like myself are glad for a live album, but in the end, it makes you a fan of ALL his albums. The is a great overview of Todd, but in the end, all his albums are great.

4 out of 5 stars A classic live Deano with a caveat emptor.......2004-08-17

First remind yourself that you've purchased a live CD from 1964, so the sound quality isn't perfect but it should always have a *little* hiss when it's live, right?

Anyway....this is a fine example of Dean Martin playing his crowd while crooning some of his signatures. Here is my caveat: If you don't want to hear Dean deliver some of the same exact jokes (and even song arrangements) as he does on "The Rat Pack: Live at the Sands" Cd, then don't buy this CD.

But overall, I am happy I have it as any Rat Pack music is good music, and I figure it's OK for some of it to be repeated. He was probably drunk and forgot he told the same jokes :)

5 out of 5 stars The most entertaining album I have ever heard.......2003-08-06

This amazing live album gives us Dean Martin at his most entertaining best; no one worked a crowd like Dino, and this has to be the most entertaining album I have ever listened to in my life. The date is February 8, 1964, and the setting is the immortal Sands Hotel in Las Vegas; truly, to borrow a phrase from what is probably Dino's most well-known song, memories are made of this. Those looking for the world's greatest crooner's delivery of impeccably romantic love songs should look elsewhere, though, as this performance lives up to its subtitle: An Evening of Music, Laughter and Hard Liquor. Dean is in full character as the fun-loving, alcohol-consuming entertainer he portrayed so well, and there is probably more comedy than singing over the course of this 58+ minute performance. I believe only On a Slow Boat to China is sung without some kind of interruption or comedic break, and most of the songs feature Dino's own reshaping of the lyrics. Drink to Me Only and Bourbon From Heaven leave no doubt from the start that this show is about entertainment more than singing. After quasi-serious renditions of Memories Are Made of This and That's Amore, Dino launches into a monologue of almost seven minutes. The man is absolutely hilarious; he had me laughing heartily nonstop and the live audience rolling in the aisles. A few Bing Crosby jokes and stories about his family are big highlights here; my favorite joke has to be Dino's reference to his 74-year old mother-in-law, a remarkable woman who does not even need glasses at her age - she drinks straight from the bottle.

A lot of give-and-take with the band appears in Dino's cover of Bing's June in January, then after a terrific delivery of the song You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Dean goes back to pure comedy. More Laughs With Dean features another six and half minute monologue, in which Dean tells the audience he drinks because he is insecure and can't really believe he is Dean Martin and getting to do all these wonderful things he does, a statement that I think bears a lot of hidden truth. From there, we get a most extraordinary medley of "throw-away" comedy songs, as Dean gives his own unique, sometimes non-PC twist to some old, familiar songs. The "Pretty Songs" medley that follows is less than serious in and of itself, as is the medley of Dean's classic Volare and On An Evening in Roma. This is followed by almost ten minutes of hilarious dialogue, after which Dean wraps up the show with his closing theme of Mr. Wonderful.

As I said, if you want Dean's romantic ballads, you'll need to go to his studio recordings; there are only a limited number of moments in which Dean truly unleashes his uniquely powerful voice over the course of this performance. The sound quality, while good, is also far from perfect. There is just no fullness to the sound of the music or Dean's voice, but given the nature of this performance this is not the type of problem it would have been had Dino been crooning romantic ballads for an hour without taking a break (or a drink). This is vintage Dean Martin the entertainer, and he elicits more laughter from his audience than most successful comedians can even dream of. Rarely have I laughed so much and enjoyed a performance so completely as I did this historic recording of Dean Martin Live From the Sands.

3 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great.......2002-02-13

I just finished listening to this CD. And, as with all Dino CDs it put a smile on my face. I did enjoy it but the sound is definitely not as good as "The Rat Pack: Live at The Sands" or the live medley segment from the double disc "The Capitol Years". The sound quality is somewhat muddled, not like the clear, crystalline sound of the Rat Pack disc. Had I heard this disc initially, I probably would have given it 4 stars, but hearing the Rat Pack CD first, this was almost a let down. The material is virtually the same, so for the extra money, you get much better sound, a more energetic Dean and a livelier show, not to mention Frank and Sammy. This CD is mainly for the real fan (which I am one) and for completists.

5 out of 5 stars This is Dino!.......2001-09-25

I was privilaged to attend two of Deans shows in Vegas. This is truley a reproduction of one of those preformances. Dean was there to make you have a good time and not take anything too serious. I always had a battle with myself over Dean being funny with songs and how good the songs were, even as he made jokes with them. Dino was so good he fooled many people. Was he a singer, actor, dancer or comedian? Dean may not have even understood how much talent he had himself. This album is a good time.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive packaging & sound quality, as heard on "Sopranos".......2001-08-01

I have long searched for a decent live recording of Dean Martin's Vegas act from the 60's and this is it. When I purchased this CD for less than ten bucks, I was expecting it to be of poor recording quality and too short. Boy was I wrong. The packaging and CD label is done in artful color with nice portraits of Dean against a backdrop of the bar at the old Sands in Vegas. The liner notes give a decent overview of Dean's marvelous career right up until his untimely death on Christmas Day 1995.

The sound on the CD is suprisingly good. Dean's voice can be heard loud and clear, with the band and his pianist, Ken Lane, quieter, but audible in the background. In sound quality, it is akin to, but not quite as good as "The Summit in Concert" (another live nightclub recording of the Rat Pack).

This is Dean's complete nightclub act recorded on February 8, 1964 and captures the essence of the Rat Pack era. Several celebrities are in the crowd that Dean introduces at the end of the show (Keely Smith, Loren Greene among others). This CD also gives you far more of Dean's comedy monologue than any other Dean Martin CD out there.

I own 3 different CD's of Frank, Dean and Sammy performing together (2 from the Villa Venice shows in Chicago- "The Summit in Concert"; & "Rat Pack"; and one unauthorized, bootleg recording of a show done in Atlantic City). What is striking to me is how the act is almost exactly the same in every show-- same gags, same jokes done at the same points in the show, same tunes with the same changed comical lyrics. It's no wonder that Dino grew tired of this bit and backed out of the "Together Again Tour" in 1989. Despite this, Dean's solo performance of this act is funnier than when Frank & Sammy are on the scene. Dean's easygoing comic delivery and great timing make the same tired jokes seem funny again. This is definetly worth the purchase. Don't let the nominal retail price scare you away-- this is a CD you'll love as much (or more than) as the ... "Summit in Concert" CD put out by Tina Sinatra's "Artanis" label.

Apparently the directors of the HBO hit series "The Sopranos" also appreciate this recording because it is featured in the final episode of the 2002 season. Tony Soprano, separated from his wife and on the verge of divorce, moves out of the house and sleeps on his yacht docked just off the shore of an annoying attorney's backyard...all through the night he sits on his boat drowning his sorrows while blasting Dino's lounge act from the boat's speakers...much to the chagrin of the sleepless attorney and his wife! It's a riot!

Jump on this, Dino fans...we've waited long enough...

if i had to pick a favorite song on this cd, that would be the one...i heard this one more than the others. " one life to live," is superb...she did all these songs in one take ! and the passion and romance is undeniable...i had never listened to cabaret before this. i became a fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship!.......2002-01-19

This CD is thoroughly enjoyable. O'Callaghan's passionate interpretations of these cabaret/parlour style songs are never less than convincing in their colourful delivery. My particular favorite's are two of the Weill numbers: "Je ne t'aime pas", which is so full of heart-wrenching angst, and "Youkali", because it is so rarely heard. The lesser known works of Poulenc and Satie are also each sparkling little treasures. The musicians all seem to "gel" together beautifully, and one can imagine that they had a really great time recording this disc together. Fantastic artistry!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording by a fast-rising cabaret star.......1998-11-04

This first CD by the talented soprano Patricia O'Callaghan is truly excellent. Ms. O'Callaghan has the rare ability to mesmerize the listener through her intuitive and expressive vocal instrument. Her voice and vocal style are unique..she imitates no one. This is the sign of a true artist. The selections, ranging from Poulenc to Weill to a rarely heard gem by George Gershwin, are performed with meticulous attention to detail. Nuances, articulation of the text combined with superb vocal technique are very evident. If you haven't yet purchased Youkali, put it on your definite "to do" list tomorrow!!!

      3 out of 5 stars .....I DON'T KNOW....MAYBE IT'S ME.............2002-08-16

....there's something uneven about this cd....and i reallyh hate the word 'uneven' because it implies that something was once 'even' and then something happened to undo that comfortable and smooth quality. and that's what i feel happened in this case...because i'm a big fan of mary cleere haran's 'this heart of mine' cd and i figured -- well, i found that new singer....the one that could sing songs from the forties and make you feel like the forties just opened two years ago....but there's something wrong with a performer who really can sing and decides to talk a lot because she, or he, knows that pretty soon...before the next couple of songs....there's this talk i wanta do and this will give me an added dimension and i'm working here in that icon of new york hotels were 'talk' was the big thing....with all those great minds of intellect and humor gathered around one of those tables sitting out there...it's gotta be the same table...or one of them...so i'll talk to the people...it'll be different...they'll expect one song after another but i have a lot to say...i don't just memorize lyrics...i can talk. well, just like people who can spell think they can write...there are those who assume that since they can sing a word they can probably speak it just as well...wouldn't that be neat. and we could do more cds like this and there's gotta be lots of hotels out there like this one and i could have a whole new career within a not too old career and people probably want to hear me say stuff because they want to know more about me. right? right? RIGHT? will one of you guys hand me the piano sheet for 'this heart of mine'? no, i have nothing to say about it. harry warren and arthur freed said it all.....like jack benny used to say, 'Play, Phil." Whoever in the world "Phil" was! well, i'm sure by now mary thinks she did the job she set out to do....and maybe she did....maybe it's me. but i've gotta feeling that dorothy parker could also sing and talk...she saved the words for were they counted....in her writing....except for those times when she wanted to shock somebody...which was always. 'this heart of mine'....you know, she could've really done something special with that song. it would've come out sounding different...but everything she said did exactly that and we're still talking about her. at least i am. no, it's not me. mary probably knew better when she did the larry hart cd. maybe.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Haran is definately witty!.......2002-04-14

Mary Cleere Haran is one of those classy caberet singers that has the special gift of SWING(which most cabaret singers aren't nessicarily gifted with, the only other one I can think of, off hand is the gifted Wesla Whitfield), here on this live cd recorded at the historical Oak Room she sings a variety of swing and jazz standards and lost gems mostly from the 20's thru 40's, the opener is a real gem which includes the rare verse on "Let's Do It", then the charming Miss Haran talks about wit, she also sings a hauntingly beautiful "A Fine Romance" and great renditions of "There's A Small Hotel", "I Concentarate On You" and perhaphs the finest recorded version ever of "Waters Of March." One doesn't mind Haran's informitive and witty remarks between each song, she's truly a classy cabaret swinger blessed with a gorgeous voice. Definately worth picking up(also get her latest "Crazy Rhythm"). All of Haran's cd's are consistant in quality for she only uses the finest jazzman to back her up, and she loves the standards and forgotten gems too(& she often sings the verses to many standards). Buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars When I first heard Mary Cleere Haran.......2000-09-25

This album was my introduction to Mary Cleere Haran. I was looking for something different. Music something like the cabarets in the old movies. Something other than the rock, country and pop music I grew up on.

I loved it. The clear voice, amusing (and often witty) lyrics and even the 'live' comments all added to my enjoyment of this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars S'Wonderful.......2000-04-27

We had a wonderful evening listening to Ms. Haran perform in New York a few years ago. This live recording captures her charm and wit, which is at the core of her art. We loved her stories about growing up Catholic in San Francisco. Its an excellent live recording of her cabaret act. Thank you, Mary.

1 out of 5 stars NOT a smart purchase on my part ...........1999-01-19

Cannot be one of Ms Cleery's best .... poorly put together, one selection is barely audible, next you have to turn volume way down because it is TOO loud ... this ia a live recording and not my favorite type of CD ...

5 out of 5 stars Kris Delmhorst on the free download.......2005-04-23

I was browsing looking for new music and realized Kris Delmhorst is on this album (and his other one, too, called "Shimmer"). Here on this page is a free download--check it out-- Kris's backing vocal and fiddle stands out from the start. I bought this album and highly recommend it though on its own merits. Mark McKay has a tender voice and it's cool the way this disc can be intimate and folksy and then become rockin' (with a killer cover of Atlantic City and some other stuff too). I found more downloads also on iTunes. But it's totally worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Village Voice was right...........2004-03-01

I read about this album in the Village Voice and bought it online. The critical hype that abounds at this guy's website is justified; the songwriting is rich and challenging and the live show is punctuated by an extremely talented band. Come back to New York City!

5 out of 5 stars good folk music and swamp rock.......2004-01-31

I first heard Mark McKay on the CCR tribute album Chooglin'. His version of "Who'll Stop The Rain" with Scott Murawski from Max Creek really rocks. So I bought his first album, Nothing Personal. It is great, he has a strong voice that reminds me of Michael Stipe but McKay is not as pretentious. The songs on Nothing Personal are friggin' great. The songs are full of both dense imagery and compelling storytelling; moreover, Mark McKay writes songs that are catchy and get your foot stompin'.
When I heard that he put out a live album, I was definitely curious. Well, this live album gives me more reasons to like this guy. This Live album proves two things.
          1) His songs hold up in the singer/songwriter guitar and vocals thing.
          2) When he wants to rock, with some band called June Star backing him up, the man can truly get gritty and sort of swampy.
So buy this album if you wanna listen to a live album that has both good folky stuff and passionate roots rock.

2 out of 5 stars Another part time musician with some money?.......2004-01-27

He's collaborated with some musicians from my personal library, he has a very nice website, he plays lots of shows, so why isn't this CD better? Forget the hoopla, he must have another one of those devoted band girlfriends working hard to make him look good.

5 out of 5 stars Now I understand what the buzz is about..........2004-01-19

This album confirms Mark McKay is the real deal; he sounds great on the solo tracks as well as the full band tracks although I prefer him with his own band than with June Star. His live shows are great as well. I highly recommend this album as well as Nothing Personal which I bought the last time I saw him in New York.
