2 out of 5 stars Same old, same old.......2003-12-02

For one thing, I've played music for many years, but I'm also a neutral listener. I am most intrigued by the ambience that establishes the true character of each band, known or unknown. After listening to this title and one other I'm somewhat shocked. Magellan has an almost generic sound. Heavy rock acts have existed since the 1960's, and there are a few that have continued to achieve an 'original' presence, but not these guys. Their music has little verve, a certain blandness about it. It's just not entertaining. After a couple of listens there are no 'hooks', no memorable melodies, nothing emotionally 'moving' about it at all. Magellan's vocals are boring, too dry, as if it were recorded in Death Valley. They resemble the musical equivalent of a collegiate thesis on Relativity. Honestly, Magellan sounds like they have never played a live performance in their lives. I strongly, emphatically recommend that they hire a drummer, bass player, a good vocalist, and go out to play live venues. Get out of the house, get out of the studio, actually play the music live, in front of people. Maybe they'll learn how to interact with a real audience, and learn what entertainment' really means.

1 out of 5 stars Strong nose, nice color....weak taste. Ahhhhh nuts!.......2005-12-16

I was kinda' taken with this album (at first)...then..right in the middle of Confessors Overture...I hear someone coughing!!!! Yeah...that's right...coughing. ping-a-ding-ding-ding..bling ping..(cough cough cough...) ping ping a ding....

For you iTunes users that would be around 1:36 remaining time. Jeeze! How could they have missed that??? What a blunder.

Hymn For A Heathen had so much potential...but about three quarters of the way through they get all grandious..with vocal hystrionics..and it just lets you down..it's disjointed and it's inconsistent. It started with a beautiful stanza...uh..so that's that.

You might just want to forget it. It's like they had the plane build but the motor just crapped out.

'nuff said.

2 out of 5 stars How about something original?.......2005-09-13

It's amazing how too many inexperienced bands can be as predictable as rain - almost all of them have that glossy 'stars in their eyes' look, view themselves as the best band to ever hit the airwaves, no doubt that they are the only members of their fan club. That is exactly what Magellan is all about. This is yet another of their albums that has no charm, no charisma, no memorable melodies, no originality, no singular identity - compared to the Prog Rock scene around them they are about as interesting as a sidewalk. And it goes on album after album. They play well, but what does it mean if a fine Heart surgeon operates on your Kneecap? The real beauty of any album is how often one listens to it 5 years later, and that's what this album won't do. After a couple listens the interest is gone because there was none to begin with. Shallow, derivative, superficial. Most telling is that as I write this, already there are 57 used titles available. And if that's not all, the opening track is called "Gorilla with a Pitchfork". That says it all.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff from InsideOut Music.......2005-02-11

I took a chance on this album because they are carried by InsideOut Music. I was not disappointed. There is great musical talent and impressive song writing. Since I am a huge fan of YES, Genesis, and Spock's Beard, I enjoyed the multiple layers of sound on this CD. I even think that track 9 was meant to be a sort of tribute to Starship Trooper (the ending instrumental is extremely similar--I loved it).

I love epic prog, but if you feel like a break from 15+ minute songs then this might be a good alternative. It certainly is better than the garbage coming out of the radio stations.

5 out of 5 stars my personal favorite Magellan release.........2004-11-12

I've owned this cd for quite a while now, but i thought i'd put in my two cents. though i don't own much magellan, this is by far my favorite of their releases up to now and this includes side projects.

Anyone who considers themselves a fan of progressive rock, should pick this album up. there's songs you may have to listen to a few times to like, but once they hook in, they don't let go easy. there are also some great instrumental parts on this album as well.

4 out of 5 stars A very good album . . . but "bombast" is good!.......2004-07-01

I think the statement in one of the previous reviews "doesn't fall prey to long, boring epics with a million ideas like many prog bands" is the exact antithesis to good prog rock (except the boring part, of course). Progressive music is supposed to be full of changes, complexities, different time signatures, instrumentation, etc. Do you know what you get when you remove all of these elements? Just plain rock 'n roll . . . and you can get THAT anywhere. Magellan is one of the many, many, many underexposed bands of this genre, and although Test of Wills is still my favorite Magellan album, this album is well put together, thoughtfully composed and HUGE on talent (I even like the new drummer). Long is good. Complex is good. BOMBAST is very good!
