you'll wish you were there.......2006-12-10
"Epitome" opens the CD with a stately saxophone statement, then "Prince Lasha" gets into the heart and spirit of the CD. Basically, there's a whole mess of saxophonists playing swinging lines and someone playing hot solos over it. There are moments of orchestration (thankfully, with 12 to 13 people playing simultaneously), and there are free spots during some of the solos. Pope invited guest saxophonists Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, and James Carter, who solo on different songs. Odean Pope solos, of course, as well two members of his choir. Underneath it all is an unknown rhythm section who do just as good a job as any name players. Since it's a live date, you can appreciate how the Saxophone Choir is a finely-tuned piece of machinery. Five of seven songs are by Pope, and two are by John Coltrane. The Coltrane songs sound no better or worse than the Pope songs, which may reflect the advantage Pope has writing for an unusual ensemble. The highlight of the CD is the scorching "Muntu Chant" at the end. Music heard live will sometimes bring moments of total joy and bliss. I'm sure the people in the audience were feeling that as the Choir walked off stage. Ornette Coleman was also in the audience, and wrote some liner notes. I've never read anything by Ornette, his written word is as unique as his music.
Stupendous.......2006-04-16
If you appreciate the finest in saxophone playing, jazz composition and distinctive orchestras, then you MUST MUST MUST listen to this unique album. I first saw Odean Pope play with Max Roach about 25 years ago in Chicago and was utterly amazed at Pope's technical command of the instrument (he is by far the master of circular breathing). Then I was utterly astonished when I heard a recording of his Saxophone Choir about 12 years ago - and I have always been a huge fan of the World Saxophone Quartet. Given the paucity of Pope on disc, the jazz world is in for a thrill with this live album from a date at the Blue Note (I wish I had been there). The only quibble is that a number of the pieces have been recorded by Pope's Saxophone Choir before, but that's a bit like complaining that Ellington recorded "Take the A Train" too often!! Besides, the personnel on these versions is the best ever.
Long Overdue.......2006-04-13
Never done this before, but somebody had to say something about this marvelous disc. I assume I'm writing for those unfamiliar with Odean's work, because if you follow him, this release is an event, and you bought this the second it came out. What a 12 months for bombshell live jazz releases. I've been engrossed by the Monk/Coltrane and Coltrane at the half-note recordings, but I have to admit that I've found this one even more exciting. It's just as rare as either, more so even, both for the ear, but also as a musical document. Odean Pope is not just another Philadelphia tenor from the Carolinas. He was long-time tenor for Max Roach; do not miss TO THE MAX, which features fellow Philadelphian and choir bassist Tyrone Brown as well. Still Odean is criminally under-represented on disc. Recordings of his choir are particularly scarce. If he had gone to Europe or up the turnpike perhaps that would not be the case, but he stayed home in Philly, capital of obscure treasures. I've seen Odean in different groupings perhaps twenty times here in Philly over the past ten years (particularly memorable were home-comings of Sunny Murray, joined by Byard Lancaster and Khan Jamal), and although I've seen the apprentice choir - featuring McIver, Levin, Bobby Zankel with young students of Pope - I've never had a chance to see the full adult choir. But this disc is rare also in a musical sense: there's really nothing that sounds quite like this band. And Odean has such a distinctive and unusual voice as well. Here he's joined by Brecker whose capacity for drama maybe has never been better served. Lovano is a contrast: more mercurial and luminous set next to Odean's dark, pondering tone. Whether you're into Ellington's suites or Vandermark 5 or Either/Orchestra, this is something you have to hear.

THE PENETRATORS ARE ONE OF THE BEST.......2003-11-24
Man when I bought this album it blew me out of the water. This is a great surf cd. These guys are Surfin Spys. The band is Rip Thrillby(lead guitar), Spanky Twangler(Rhythm guitar), Trace Luger(Bass), Illya "Stix" Stechkin(Percussion). These guys are from Alabama. If you want a good melody with a Spy twist then this album is for you. If you also like Los Straitjackets and James Bond Movies then give it a shot.
Surf Guitar Lives !.......2002-09-13
If you miss those days when Dick Dale, the Surfaris, Chantays, Pyramids etc. ruled the "airwaves", you will love this disc. All tracks are guitar instrumentals that are true to the original spirit of "surf guitar", but with all the advantages of modern recording technology.
"Checkpoint Echo", "Triple Dog Dare" and "Midnight Run" stood out for me after one play, but all tracks are good. A couple of numbers are slower and moody, but mostly the music here is taken at a frantic pace, and very exciting.
I should also mention the great cover--remember when vinyl album covers became an art form ? Well, this would have been a great "album cover".
For guitar instrumental fans, this is a treat !
Spies and Surf from Georgia!.......2002-06-29
One of the better instrumental-guitar bands out there is the secret-agent-obsessed Penetrators. A lot of style and pizzazz goes into every facet of their packaging, thanks largely to "Rip Thrillby", who in addition to lead guitars also did the terrific cover art and is a website designer in his "secret identity". (Check it out, The Penetrators have one of the BEST-designed websites of any "local" band I've ever run across!) But NO gimmicks are needed in their music-- it's just great!
These guys have had a LOT of appearances on singles, EPs and comp albums (many hard-to-find) and several of the better songs have turned up here (a few re-recorded) including "Redlined", "Speed Bump", "Triple-Dog Dare" and "Mariner 4". My faves on LOCKED & LOADED are definitely "Checkpoint Echo" and "Southern Surf Syndicate Theme".
...
It's Good.......2002-03-22
I ordered it from Amazon, and their efficient order fufillment people found it. It's a surprisingly effective album, with solid and melodic guitar work. Checkpoint Echo is a classic piece, and Deception Bay is a nice slower-tempo number. Solid, straight-ahead surf music, no covers, goth-surf, or rap-surf.
simply the best.......2001-06-22
Not Surf Beat, Banzai Washout or Pipeline again, but original album full of speed of a hurricane, even with peace of a lake in its eye, but always with strong melodies, simply the best instrumental (surf) album I have ever heard. (....)

All politics aside..........2005-07-12
I will comment on a couple of areas in this review: The performance of the songs, the quality of the songs, and the politics surrounding Molly Hatchet. The performance of the songs on this CD is pretty good. I felt that some of the older tracks were played somewhat in slow motion. Beatin' the Odds in particular, could have been played at a faster pace, so too, Gator Country. Phil McCormick on the vocals was a surprise to me. When you hear the guy's voice you think he's 65 years old on studio tracks. I wouldn't have thought he could have lasted for a live show, but he actually sounds great. The rest of the band sounds pretty good, too.
The song selection is okay. Some of the newer tunes are good, some of the newer tunes are bad. I prefer old Hatchet to the new, but I love "Down from the Mountain" and "Tatanka". Tatanka is right up there with Satisfied Man and Stone in your Heart as the best Hatchet tunes. By the way, why aren't they on here?
Now for the political issue. Yes, I agree that new Molly Hatchet is not the old Molly Hatchet. It is a bit of a scam without especially Dave Hlubeck and Duane Roland. But we need not write off the music for that reason and give it a one or two star rating. I feel my review is objective in that sense. Thanks.
painfull to the ear.......2005-05-31
Well I gotta say,the boys from Florida somehow manage to make an album that would make a dentist visit a joy.The scene from the MARATHON MAN wasn't as painfull. The album should be banned from the shelves or burned,no I take that back that would be a waste of a good match. The vocals out do the instruments and that's the worst sounding drums that I've ever heard.STICK WITH DANNY JOE BROWN.When he passed away{GOD REST HIS SOUL} the band should of called it quits because in my opinion DANNY was the only singer that made the group work DAN YOU WERE THE MAN
Locked and Loaded... don't waste your money.......2004-01-31
Very poor sound quality on this CD not worth the money I paid for it. They should have paid me to take it off their hands. The song "dreams I'll never see" is very poorly done and the clarity of the song sucks as does the clarity on the rest of the cd. It's like I took my old cassette player and held a microphone up in the audience transfered on tape several times then put it on a CD. I can't listen to it without distortion from the CD (and it's not my expensive speakers). I tried it on 3 different systems. If it is not loud (which amplifies the cd distortion) it is just a bunch of rumbling. What a waste of money. All I'm looking for is a quality recording of Dreams I'll Never See. Not this poor quality crap.
awsome cd.......2004-01-07
This cd is one of the greatest live albums ever done. The sound is so good its like you are there at the show! I urge everyone to buy this cd. If you like molly hatchet and southern rock this cd is for you! The molly hatchet legend continues!
DON`T TRY TO LIVE IN THE PAST.......2003-08-01
HELL YA,THIS IS A GREAT CD.THE ONLY REASON I DID NOT GIVE THIS A5 STAR IS BECAUSE THE SOUND QUALITY IS ALITTLE OFF.BUT THE ENERGY IS THERE,AND ALOT OF THE NEW SONGS ARE BETTER THAN THE OLD HATCHET TUNES.THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN TELL THAT BOBBY INGRAM IS A SECOND RATE PLAYER.THIS GUY ROCKS AND THERE SINGER PAT MCCORMICK FITS THIS BAND LIKE A GLOVE.I AM HOPING THAT THEY JUST KEEP PUTING OUT MORE CD.LETS KEEP GREAT SOUTHERN MUSIC ALIVE.

High-energy music.......1999-06-23
This CD has been one of my favorites due to the fast-paced performance of this seemingly comedic band. Its a great thing when bands will turn up the tempo for a live show - that is exactly what this is. Put on some coffee, bounce around, clean the house, and air guitar your socks off.
