Mini LP
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This stunning debut from Seattle's Orbiter is a study in contrasts. Mini LP kicks off with "3 A.M.," a languorous, atmospheric instrumental that establishes the dark tone that colors the entire set. But a light, joyful mood also surfaces throughout the CD via the restrained yet uplifting interplay of guitar and synthesizer. On "Stray Dogs," the listener is treated to the alluring vocals of Fiia McGann as she ponders the need to come to terms with life's decisions and regrets in order to make peace with oneself. The crisp, shimmering guitar attack of the other half of this dynamic duo--Harris Thurmond--punctuates the songs and accents the vocals perfectly; his playing is confidently assertive but never overpowering or intrusive. Thurmond takes his turn at the mic on a couple of numbers and his "Paper Tiger," a meditation on a celebrity who's fallen from grace, is a highlight. Combining guitar work and a melodic sensibility that reflects Radiohead, as well as plaintive vocals and deep rhythmic grooves that recall Portishead, Orbiter has crafted a unique style of guitar driven trip-pop that is at once familiar and notably original. --Michael Wells
Product Description
Take your expectations and shoot them to the moon. Yes, Orbiter is Harris Thurmond and Fiia McGann, two Seattle-based performers with a deep and impressive musical pedigree, but you honestly have no idea what this sounds like. Part laid-back groove, part trip-hop-noir, part guitar-erotica, Orbiter's 'Mini LP' is six tracks of revelation. Fiia sings (and you've never really heard her sing before, this is something very, very special) and Harris does a bit of everything - or, as it says on the sleeve - 'vocals, guitars, keyboards, loops, bloopy and squawky noises.'

Apostrphe (').......2007-06-05
Frank Zappa-Apostrophe(') *****
The first half of the album is sort of a concept album, well a mini-concept album about an eskimo named Nanook and all of his wild adventures. The second half of the album just plays out like a well polished jazz record with satire thrown in for lyrical content. Filled with some of the most outragiously satirical lyrics in Zappas cannon, and some of the most amazing guitar work ever heard or played mixed with some of the strangest sounds ever recorded but by this time the world had come to expect that from the genius that is Frank Zappa, and some how all of this madness managed to become a hit album. How you ask well lets see.
By this time Zappa had earned much respect in the musician comunity and a large fan base because of his humor. By the time Apostrophe(') was released in 1974 the world had began to realize that listening to a Zappa album is like whitnessing a shock and awe mission and many were curious about it. With the large success and suprize radio air time of 'Dont Eat The Yellow Snow' Apostrophe managed to become a gold album, Zappas first of his career. The song had catchy lyrics, and a great melody, and not to mention the amazing guitar playing through out.
The first two tracks 'Dont Eat The Yellow Snow' and 'Nanook Rubs It' are combined together as a single just title 'Dont Eat The Yellow Snow' which is another reason why this album is essntial and so cool because this is the way that it was ment to be heard.
'Nanook Rubs It' is a bluesy song about the murdering of Nanooks favorite baby seal. 'St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast' plays out like some strange love at first sight with Tina Turner singing backup. 'Father O'Blivion' is a fushion jazz track that is just so out of this world that it must be heard to apreciate, this track ends the mini-concept album.
The second half of the album opens with the Zappa classic 'Cosmik Debris.' This song has gone on to be a fan favorite appearing on almost all of Zappas post human compalation albums. 'Excentrifugal Forz' is just insane. Must be heard, and is truly one of the best songs that Zappa has ever written. The title track 'Apostrohe(')' is an amazing insrumental that contains some of the very best guitar playing ever recorded. 'Uncle Remus' starts out as a old time piano ballad, somewhat wild west-esq. Then it transforms into an all out guitar assualt on the ears. 'Stink Foot' is a song that not many feel is a highlight but that is just wrong, the song takes up a fifth of the 32 minute album, it is vital to the album and is perfect for closing an already great album.
Aside from Zappas guitar playing which is amazing and prevalant through out the album he also wrote everything he himself did not play. All the background music is of his own writing. All the Xylaphone, drum, ect. are all written by Zappa so not only was he playing and singing along but conductiong as well.
Apostrophe(') is an amazing album that no Zappa fan can not own and still call themselves a Zappa fan. This is essential to all jazz and rock collections!
Genius, pure genius!.......2007-05-12
I am very pleased with this imported CD; sounds exactly like the album I used to have! However, one song name is misspelled (disappointing) -- "Hanook" Rubs It should be "Nanook" Rubs It. Other than that, great!

Botched remastering.......2007-06-27
Rhino has a reputation for quality sound remastering, but they've blown it on the 2007 re-release of "Close To The Edge". The 2003 Rhino remastering that included 4 bonus tracks (this one has none) sounded much better...less hiss and a wider stereo image with less abrasiveness. It appears that this latest version recycles the audio mastered in the '90s, which is unfortunate since the album was a state-of-the-art demonstration of recording studio techniques when it was released in 1972, and it's a much loved benchmark of progressive rock and classic rock.
The selling point of this edition is that it duplicates the artwork from the original Roger Dean-designed LP. Big deal. The 2003 version had all the artwork also, and it doesn't make much difference anyway because you can't read the miniaturized text once it's scaled down to the size of a CD. There is also an older Japanese mini-LP edition of the CD, and that also sounds better than this latest version (and includes readable lyrics).
If I were a member of the band or their recording engineer, I'd be pissed that a shoddy representation of their greatest achievement is what's being currently promoted.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Version of the Album That's Out There Today!.......2006-08-05
This Japanese mini-lp sleeve version of this best of compilation of Frank Zappa's best ever "commercial" hits is the one to get. The packaging is a work of art and the remastered sound quality of the 2 discs is extremely well done. I also have the older Rykodisc version and I can tell you that as good as the sound quality was for that version, this version is even better. We also get 2 tracks that are not on the Rykodisc version: "Bobby Brown Goes Down" and "Planet of the Baritone Women". All the lyrics are included in both English and Japanese on an insert as well as an interesting essay on Frank on another insert too.
The clown prince of rock guitar never fails to bring a smile to my face each time I put this album on and his pure comic genius is evident for all to hear. It takes a great talent to be so confident in his own ability to make a joke and laugh about it. Frank never seems to take himself and rock music in general too seriously but clearly seems to be having a lot of fun doing it. He reminds me of Mozart who although being a prodigious talent, still found the time to compose "Ein musikalicher Witz" or "A musical joke" where he attempts to play "poorly" to poke fun at provincial musicians and composers and yet, the "joke" is so well done, it's actually quite good.
Frank is so good that even his "jokes" rank very highly in terms of quality musicianship. Anyone looking for the best of the more accessible material that Frank has done over his career need look no further. Highly recommended.
