The 3rd amazing album, creatively, it takes moves away from the archetypal sounds of their first 2 releases (Beatles, Badfinger, Big Star), although some songs would fit perfectly on either of those records. But the sonic blast of Mott The Hoople make a workout here and plenty of beautiful, soulful pop songs spring forth, as well. The most mature and rewarding release of the band yet. And that is saying something pretty powerful. Not Lame Recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but pretty good!.......2004-01-08

Myracle Brah's fifth album is a good effort for this stellar hard pop band--a return to traditional album format after 2002's relatively experimental (though under-rated) Bleeder that nevertheless never quite hits the highs of '98's Life on Planet Eartsnop and 2000's The Myracle Brah.

Within, you'll find seven good to great songs recorded in a pleasantly raucous, live-in-the-studio style. "Modern World" is a Myracle Brah classic; the band of "I'd Rather Be" returns with a blast. (Wonderful that they left in the drawing-in of breath that kicks off the song.) "This Is Where We Belong" melds Who-like aggression in the verses to a Merseybeat chorus. "When She Comes Around" (a brighter version of the song which appeared on the Japanese release of Life on Planet Eartsnop) and "Climbing On A Star" are the kind of crunchy confections that Andy Bopp seems to knock off with ease. "Be Your Lover" features a "Drive My Car"-like lick (one of a couple of obscure Beatle homages on the CD). And "A Hole in My Head" and "The Most Important Subject" are slow and spartan, lovely and melancholy.

Sadly, but for "Modern World," the album tends to roll downhill in its second half. Myracle Brah's filler sometimes flirts with brilliance, but "Think About You," "Heedless Headless," "Go" and "Runaway" could be anybody. ("Runaway" in particular sounds as though it should be played over the out credits of a 1980s romantic comedy.)

But, heck, that's seven out of 11. How many bands can match that percentage? And "Go" is growing on me. :)

1 out of 5 stars Big letdown after Life on Planet Earthsnop.......2002-05-08

I was very disappointed with this disc. Where were the 2 minute nuggets of brilliant pop from the previous recording? I found this disc to be both bland and tuneless. Very sad.

4 out of 5 stars Solid follow up to Eartsnop........2001-09-28

Yes, Myracle Brah's second album does borrow a lot from the past, but that's not a bad thing. Pop music doesn't have to be written by producers and performed by pretty puppets with pleasant voices (fun with alliteration!).

This record is short, sweet and too the point. Melodic and and catchy, Myracle Brah is a fresh of breath air despite the obvious homages to the past.

Rock on.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2000-07-16

This powerpop frenzy is getting out of hand. A couple of gems - the first Fountains Of Wayne record and Cotton Mather's 'Kon Tiki' - and any band that can mange a two-part harmony and a McCartney bassline is getting hailed as the purest of pure pop on a very pure day. Enter Myrakle Brah. Like so much of what is hailed as genuis at the moment, 'Platespinner' is a pedestrian affair, with the odd terrific moment (if we're honest, it's all downhill from the excellent opener). People say it's like listening to AM radio in 1972. AND THAT'S MEANT TO BE A GOOD THING? Hey, punk did happen, and the powerpop that strikes a chord now accepts that (how depressing, to talk about the best of a genre being willing to accept another genre from 25 years ago). This is lumpy, pedestrian stodge. What next? The Hall and Oates revival?

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best Pop records of all time........1999-10-11

I had waited for this album for years and whne it finally came out, I was ecstatic. You will not be let down by the amazing Andy Bopp. He comes through with the outstanding music that you expect from a stand up guy like himself. Where Life on Planet Eartshnop lacked imn emotional investment, Plate Spinner picks up. Great cd. And you have to order it from Amazon, because youa nd I know that you aint gunna find it in your local cd store.

Album Description

1998 debut from hard-hitting power pop act that's actually the side project of Love Nut's Andy Bopp. An amazing collection of short and sweet blasts of pure pop that are immediately loved by those who hear them and longed for by those who haven't. 20 tracks.

Poor Alex Chilton. So many offspring, so little money. This is a great, great record, don't get me wrong. I went f'ing nuts when I first heard it, I always wanted a new Big Star record for Christmas. Thank you Andy Bopp, you were up to a task none should have dared. You are my hero.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars.......2003-07-22

Channelling the ghosts of late-period Beatles, Badfinger and Big Star with almost eerie accuracy, Myracle Brah's debut captures the sound and spirit of the classic power-pop era to perfection. Where Andy Bopp's work with Love Nut absorbs the influences of hard rock and punk, this solo project feels directly beamed in from sometime in 1972, as though the subsequent quarter century never even happened. What the record lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in pure charm - a gifted songwriter, Bopp stuffs Life on Planet Eartsnop with no less than 20 tracks, each of them dead-on evocations of an era long gone by and rarely recalled quite so effectively or affectionately. - Jason Ankeny, AMG

5 out of 5 stars ! ! ! A MUST HAVE ! ! !.......2001-06-06

If Andy Bopp was born in the fifties whe named him now in one breath together with The Kinks, The Stones and The Beatles. But Andy was born later (for his own reason I guess)so it's lonely at the retro top for him. This guy records his songs like the early days:no fancy producers, sometimes a second voice when its nescesary,(so there are much second voices left over for us...wich I think is always a gift from the heart of the composer...Thanks, mr Bopp),raw and straight from the heart,Guitar,Bass and Drums and a Golden Voice wich you can easely handle in the early morning! Thanks Myracle Andy and I hope you'll play sometimes in Amsterdam!

5 out of 5 stars Flirts with perfection.......2001-05-06

Any fan of true power pop (Beatles, The Kinks, Big Star, Badfinger, Cheap Trick, The Records, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet) should immediately drop everything and pick this up. It's easily one of the best albums of the 1990s and will hold up for years to come. Andy Bopp is a songwriter extraordinaire, with tunes like "Whisper Softly"(two minutes of pure heaven), "I'm In Love", "She's So Young", and "Carry On The Lie" rivalling the works of any of the previously mentioned masters. I'm baffled by the fact that Andy Bopp is not ruling the charts as a result of this work. There's no justice in this world. Go buy this, help make his royalty check a bit larger, and help right one of the wrongs in the world of pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Their more then just good,.......2000-10-25

A group like Myracle Brah comes out every 5-10 years, and when they do grab everything you can get your hands on. THIS is the kind of music that should be played on Top 40, but they didnt even glance at it! WAKE UP TOP 40!. How a group like MB can be ignored is beyond my understanding.

Most Beatles,Badfinger even Big Star fans will love this CD, Andy Bopp even has a Lennon,Pete Ham and Harrison sound to his voice, with George Harrison and The Byrds type guitars.

You may have also heard Andy Bopps other group "Love Nut" Their second CD was in some ways almost as good as this one here, maybe even better in some areas. Actually Love Nut was his first group of his, then MBrah became his side project, well, it seems the side project has become the main group and Love Nut is no longer (not sure) recording.

As for "Life On Planet Eartsnop"? You'll like it so much you'll want it by your side at all times, because those songs we'll be playing in your head, at work, when your shopping, driving, whatever. Packed with 20 songs!

The highlights of this CD, "Action Reaction",(Sounds like the Who meets G.Harrison) "Someday Soon"(sounds like Badfinger and Lennon or Harrison penned it) "Good Day to The Night" (Sounds like Big Star meets Cheap Trick) "Shes Everything" (Raspberries meets Cheap Trick). "Loli La Letta" Beatlesque all the way, with Harrison style guitar. "Love Is" has got to be heard to believe, in fact this whole CD has to be heard to believe.

There should be some sort of crime in the books for this CD to be over looked. Btw, the Matt Massons brought back memories. Buy this CD and hear those Rickenbackers Chime, its well worth the money.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The great stuff is here, but ..........2004-01-30

A respectable 12-song sampler of Myracle Brah's first three albums, with one unreleased track--and another that wasn't released at the time--tacked on as a bonus.

Most of the Baltimore band's pre-Bleeder classics are here: "Whisper Softly" and "Inside of You" from 1998's Life on Planet Eartsnop, "Isn't It A Crime?" from 1999's Plate Spinner, and "Message '78," "I'd Rather Be" and "Madaliene" from 2000's The Myracle Brah.

That's a spectacular half-a-CD right there.

You can quarrel a bit with song selection in the other half. The compilers could have picked from Eartsnop blindfolded and still come up with great songs 90 percent of the time, and "Action Reaction" (think the Who in '69) and "Good Day to the Night" are as good as any. But "Can't Explain"-ish solo notwithstanding, "Loli, La Letta" has always struck me as a great lick--"Day Tripper" turned on its side--in search of a song. (What about ""Just Because" or "Bitter Thing"?)

Similarly, "When She Cries" from The Myracle Brah for me lacks the edge that has always separated Myracle Brah from featherweight powerpop bands. I'd have voted instead for "Smile" (Billy Joel at his best), "Dying 310" or the bluesy rocker "Hey Now."

And Plate Spinner is just under-represented. The psychedelic epic "Albert S. Hand" is here, as is the Beatlesque closer, "Slip Away." But where's the guitar extravangaza "Mr. Tuesday Man," "Hearts on Fire" or the wonderful Zombies homage/rip-off, "Treat Her Right"?

Myracle Brah devotees will already have these songs, but will want Super Automatic nevertheless for the unreleased tracks--presumably from the sessions for the then-in-the-works Bleeder. (One of them, "The Way You Are," appears in the handwritten track listings on the back cover of that CD.) File "Way" (which later appeared on the CD single "Song 37") with leader Andy Bopp's '80s-inspired gems. (The Cars minus the synth?) And "Umbrella Girl" is a jangly treasure that suggests the later Records--and then sells itself indelibly with a brief acoustic insert toward the end. And the end itself is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Would be 5 stars - but this compilation is too short!.......2003-10-01

If the CD was only fleshed out to full length... Myracle Brah's debut album, Life On Planet Eartsnop, featured 20 songs of prime power pop, while this compilation is only 14 tracks (2 of them are new, previously unreleased tracks). So this is basically an incomplete primer on one of the best 90's pop bands, although what is here is very good. Myracle Brah easily stand up to bands like Teenage Fanclub, Oasis, the Posies, and other 90's pop heroes, and it's all the more amazing that the band pretty much consists of one guy's vision (Andy Bopp). The new tracks are certainly worthy additions to the band's catalog as well.

Best Tracks:
"Isn't It A Crime" - Jangly and catchy with lazy, disaffected verse vocals. The chorus vocals soar, as per usual, and this is an all around great song.
"Albert S. Hand" - Cryptic and oddly recorded, I love the telephone ring sound in the intro. I'd call this Myracle Brah's take on "I'm Only Sleeping".
"Message '78" - Melancholy, Big Star-esque pop song, impeccably recorded.
"I'd Rather Be" - Brilliant! This song should be all over radio, it basically sounds like a more timeless version of a Weezer sing along. This song sold me on Myracle Brah.
"Whisper Softly" - Another perfect song, this is 2 minutes of power pop heaven. It was the first track on their first CD - what a way to introduce yourself to the pop world... and those Big Star guitars on the chorus are sublime.
"The Way You Are" - Not much to this song, but it's one of the new tracks here. Simple but effective, the guitars sound great.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Myracle!.......2002-11-05

As others have said in their reviews of Myracle Brah's other CDs, Andy Bopp creates pure power-pop in the tradition of The Beatles, Badfinger, The Rasberries, Matthew Sweet, Todd Rundgren, Fountains of Wayne, etc.

This collection could be called "Greatest Hits," and contains songs culled from MB's prior 3 CDs, plus 2 unreleased tracks.

Probably because of the lack of good radio stations, and the narrow playlists on music television, I was completely unaware of Myracle Brah until a friend turned me on to them. The songs simply jumped out at me with their beautiful melodies, and arrangements that simple, straight-forward and punchy.

I ran out and picked up this CD immediately, and have not stopped playing it since. It's a highly-recommended introduction to Myracle Brah -- get it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop heaven.......2001-10-22

"Message '78" is the greatest Badfinger song that Badfinger never wrote. Of course, any decent musician can do a copy/cover of another group's sound, but Myracle Brah has packaged it all together into a grand 90's update of a sound that tragically left the airwaves 25 years ago. Clean, ringing guitar and hooks that keep running through your head half the day. All of the other reviews that catalogue Mr. Bopp's influences are right on (Badfinger, Big Star, John Lennon.......does anyone remember The Dwight Twilley Band?)...and I'm certainly thankful that he's around to keep the fire burning for us "oldtimers."

I won't go into a song by song breakdown. but should mention that the songbreak from "Going Crazy" into "Out of Tune" knocks me out every time I hear it. I replayed it 4 times in the car the other day just so my 14 year old son could hear it. Now he's complaining because he can't get these songs out of his head.

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of "Planet Eartsnop" and "Platespinner" which I have already ordered. If they are half as good as this one I'll be satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars More great tunes..........2001-04-04

I've been on a power-pop binge over the past 12 months, and of all the obscure albums I own (including all three Myracle Brah releases)this is my favorite. If you're a fan of Fountains of Wayne, Weezer, Owsley, or older bands like the Beach Boys or the Beatles, I'd highly recommend this album.

4 out of 5 stars Power Pop Rockin' with Myracle Brah.......2000-12-03

Buy this album now!! The latest offering from Myracle Brah delivers twelve super-delicious tracks, including several POWER-pop rockers such as the lead track, "I'd Rather Be," and the Shazam-like rave up "Going Crazy." All the tracks feature Andy Bopp's amazingly pure vocals, memorable melodies, and powerful guitars.

This album shows a more mature song-writing style and blues-influenced composition than previous MB efforts, in my opinion. The guitar work and boogie groove on "Hey Now," for example, harken back to the best rock-pop of yesteryear, recalling (but not reproducing) songs by Rod Stewart, Cheap Trick, and others.

The album also includes several dreamy ballads to offer a moment of relaxation between the more driven numbers. Fans of The Shazam, Sloan, Todd Rundgren, and Mott The Hoople should enjoy this album. Buy it today!

3 out of 5 stars A small stumble.......2004-01-28

Bleeder is an adventurous step for Myracle Brah and, alas, something of a misstep. Rather than a straight set of songs, like the Baltimore band's prior three releases, it's injected with a range of odd little experiments--an illustration of how a collection of great songs doesn't necessarily add up to a great CD.

Song for song, Bleeder's got as much good material as any Myracle Brah release, save for the first. The grinding guitar epic "Independence Day" stands proudly with Myracle Brah classics. "Superwannabe" recalls some of Stone Temple Pilots' recent pop-side masterpieces. "Orange Shirt" and "Nation's Out" show off leader Andy Bopp's affection for early '80s British-influenced pop. The descending chorus of "Wasted" is simply of one of the best things he has released. Now I understand why Billy Joel retired. :)

And Bleeder does achieve a kind of mini-coherence in its last three tracks. The acoustic "Broken" can be seen an another successful experiment, with a touch of the medieval in its rhythms. "Roller Coaster" and "Minimum Mary" find Bopp exploring his upper vocal register to charming effect; the latter song could have slotted happily onto the end of Big Star's Radio City.

Then there are the experiments. At least one of them works. Breaking the pattern of lead-off pop gems ("Whisper Softly," "Isn't It A Crime?" and "I'd Rather Be"), "Song 37" is like nothing the band has produced, with echoed vocals, pounding drums (the lead instrument) and subdued mellotron backing. Along the way, somehow, it channels the spirit of U2.

But Bleeder's other sonic adventures do not fare as well. They range from minimalism ("Kane Wasn't Able") to distortion ("They Hear" and "Theme from Disconnect") to a rare cover (a loving if rather slavish version of Paul McCartney's "Too Many People") to simple filler ("Horn Interlude").

I'm not sure what the band intended here--the packaging is as unrevealing as ever--but Bleeder doesn't quite hold together. What might have been a great 10-track CD seems an assemblage of 15 bits and pieces in need of some glue.

OK, it's a great album. But also, this is a duplicate listing, and the exact same recording is available for a fraction of the price if you look it up under "Six Years of Power Pop". You gotta watch out - Amazon let's a lot of these duplicate, overpriced listing hang around for some reason.
