One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Wicked Witch of the West is misunderstood........2007-07-14
I have tickets to see the play in Philadelphia this August. I purchased the Music CD, the original Wicked book, and the Grimmeri, a well designed book about the Broadway play, its history, costumes, and character profiles with full color pictures and stories, a great trio. The book tells a story, so unexpected, when I got to the last page, I sighed and smiled. I was totally satisfied. Even more I had already been listening to the music, which is totally fabulous, I listened again and again, some of the songs are happily stuck in my head, and then my reading the book made the music make total sense, it brought the story to life in the songs. I can't wait to see the play.
My sisters refuse to read the book they are afraid it will take away from the show. I say they are dead wrong and the book and music reviewed ahead of time will definitely enhance the theater experience. You decide, either way it's a great read, 5 stars for the generation who grew up with the Wizard of OZ classic.
A Wicked musical.......2007-07-13
There are two, for me, outstanding pieces to this recording of the Original cast recording of the musical 'Wicked' The wizard and I and Popular. Both sung with great fun and gusto.
Over all I enjoyed the CD, being a massive wizard of Oz fan, it was interesting to listen to the story from an altogether different perspective. Enjoyable, memorable and fun- a great purchase, that comes highly recommended.
Wicked Wonderful!.......2007-07-12
My son and nieces saw Wicked on Broadway three years ago and it took me this long to order the CD. I played it endlessly the last several weeks and as a long time musical afficionado can say unequivocally, it is a superlative example of score and libretto. The lyrics are exemplary in their poignancy and clever massage of the concepts of good and evil. The music tugged at every heartstring I have. Wicked is sublime!
Wicked Soundtrack.......2007-07-12
I have experienced Wicked in London at the Apollo Theatre on three separate occasions. Owning the soundrack enables me to relive the emotion surrounding this amazing theatrical production. This soundtrack includes an appropriate character dialog and music combination enabling the listener to participate in a continuous story line flow, avoiding gaps and interrupted transitions, providing the opportunity to relieve each theatrical experience scene by scene.
I recommend this soundtract for those who are planning to go to a Wicked production. The soundract includes printed musical lyrics in the included folio. Immersing oneself in the music and lyrics will enhance the total experience at the theatre.
Enjoy
Wicked in London.......2007-07-11
I went to see Wicked at the Victoria Apollo Theatre in London last weekend. I had been playing this cd for a couple of weeks so that I knew the music beforehand and, although the vocals are not bad, it doesn't come anywhere close to the performance by Kerry Ellis. She is absolutely superb & if you get the chance to see her then you should jump at it. I hope that a Wicked cd featuring her is produced as this one has lost it's charm a little after hearing her.

As gleefully silly yet wickedly smart as the beloved British comedy troupe and their 1975 cinematic savaging of the Arthurian legend that inspired it, this adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail by MP's Eric Idle and longtime musical co-conspirator John Du Prez has much more on its feverish agenda than merely trashing King Arthur and firmly upending his Round Table. The film's plot remains largely intact, but its core songs ("Knights of the Round Table," "Brave Sir Robin") and comic thrust have been both expanded and satirically redirected, a musical comedy shotgun that takes dizzy aim at pop culture in general, and Broadway in particular. After typically Pythonesque distractions that somehow find us in "Finland..," stars David Hyde-Pierce, Tim Curry, Hank Azaria and company get busy conjuring the Lady of the Lake with the unlikely help of "Laker Girls..," while cast members Sara Ramirez and Christopher Sieber deliciously skewer contemporary Broadway cliches via the loopy showstopper "The Song That Goes Like This," a tune whose reprise also deliciously sends up every overwrought stage diva from Merman to Minelli. Idle has shrewdly ripped off--well, interpolated--Life of Brian's "Always Look On the Bright Side" for the new show, and even a snatch of "The Lumberjack Song" in "He Is Not Dead Yet." "You Won't Succeed on Broadway" reveals the frankly Semitic secret to stage success, and the French get can-canned on "Run Away!" Meanwhile, our bravest knight is de-closeted on the Manilow-mauling "His Name is Lancelot" before the familiar sound of clomping coconut shells brings down the curtain on the season's goofiest if satirically dead-on comic delight. --Jerry McCulley

Loved it.......2007-06-26
The play was great, and so is the CD. Even my partner, who's generally not a Monty Python fan, says it's "hysterical."
Get ready to laugh until you cry!.......2007-06-25
Being in the unfortunate position of living in a country where Music Theatre is virtually dead, I thought `what the heck' I'll purchase this just to see what it's like. I've never been a huge Holy Grail fan, and have only seen the movie one or two times. This musical is the first musical cast recording that has an independent storyline that you can actually gauge from the recording. It's so refreshing to actually WANT to listen to the entire recording from start to finish more than a handful of times. Most musicals have a few awesome songs that have you keep coming back for more but this musical has so much continuity that I can't help but listen from start to finish.
Don't read what some of the other commenter's have written. This is brilliant and hilarious. And if you have a slightly warped sense of humour you'll love (and appreciate) this musical so much more.
P.S. I love the songs that reference "The song that goes like this." This is supposed to be repetitive to mock its self and Broadway. It is also more comprehensive than some may lead you to believe... however just remember its called `Spamalot' not `Holy Grail' so don't expect too many Holy Grail references.
A Lot of Spam.......2007-05-22
Great CD if you like someone who can laugh at themselves. The play mocks the whole broadway musical experience. Listening to it can almost make sitting in traffic bearable...no I wouldn't go that far, but the songs are funny and will put you in a good mood.
Love, love, love this soundtrack!.......2007-05-18
The show was so much fun, and now getting to hear the soundtrack brings all the funny bits right back. These tunes are infectious! Even my 3-year-old hums them to himself. Any Monty Python fan should own this.
Hamalot!.......2007-05-15
Overall, pretty good. I liked the inclusion of various other Python bits (Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Finland, etc.), but there was an appalling lack of Tim Curry on this album (Um, hello? Rocky Horror, anyone?). Also an over-reliance on songs with lyrics like, "This is how this song goes," or "Every show has a song like this." Some more inventive lyrics would have been welcome. (Mr. Idle, meet Mr. Brooks!)
Still, pretty good. Buy it for $11 or less & you won't feel taken.

The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters's 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It's wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that's in keeping with the story's setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa Jaret Winokur's (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in "Good Morning Baltimore" to the stunningly upbeat finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." The music is by Marc Shaiman, whose recent projects include South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, as well as a number of film soundtracks, and his compositions are simultaneously solid and exuberant. Shaiman and Scott Wittman's lyrics brim over with the unreserved passions and primary-color emotions that made the film so successful. Regardless of one's familiarity with the story or the stage production, it's hard to avoid the appeal of this recording; even the less cheerful songs are awash in bright colors, without disrespect for their subjects. --Genevieve Williams

I CAN HEAR THE BELLS .......2007-05-18
YOU SHOULD BUY THIS CD WHEN YOU WANT THAT LIITLE PICK ME UP. ALSO VERY GOOD THING TO LISEN TO ON THAT TRIP TO WORK OR SCHOOL OR EVEN CLASS IF YOUR IN COLLEGE.
My New Obsession.......2007-02-07
I've been lingering over this CD for the past few weeks and finally decided to buy it and so happy I did so. This is all I've been listening to for the past few days.
From the great opener 'Good Morning Baltimore' to the best closing song I've ever heard, 'You Can't Stop the Beat', this recording is a gem.
One of my favorite songs on this soundtrack is 'The Nicest Kids in Town'. It has that kind of beat that's hard to not dance to. Another favorite is 'Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now'. It reminds me of the songs of Leslie Gore. My favorite line comes from Amber von Tussle "Once upon a time I used to dress up Ken/but now that I'm a woman I like bigger men/And I don't need a Barbie doll to show me how".
'(The Legend of)Miss Baltimore Crabs' is a glorious song for the villain. With wonderful drumming and violins in the background, Velma von Tussel has a great solo song.
'It Takes Two' is such a great slow song. I can just imagine a 1960's prom. Everyone slow dancing and the lights low. A band set up on the stage. I can't help sing along.
'Welcome to the 60's' is another wonderful song. It seems to be everyone's favorite. It's one of mine too. Harvey Fierstein is great as Edna.
'Big, Blonde, & Beautiful' is another good song. A good message to all big girls to be proud of yourself. Ignore what everyone says about you and strut. "Bring on that pecan pie/pour some sugar on it/Sugar don't be shy"
'(You're) Timeless to Me' is such a cute song between Wilbur and Edna.
'Without Love' is my number one favorite on this recording. Link proclaiming his love to Tracy who's locked up in solitary confinement and Seaweed proclaiming his love to Penny who's tied up on her bed. "Darling I'll be yours forever/'cause I never wanna be/Without love/so darling throw away the key"
'I Know Where I've Been' is a glorious gospel song. Sung by Motormouth Maybelle about her experiences and having learned from them.
'Cooties' is such a childish sounding song but it's the kind of song that should have it's own dance. It's too much fun.
The little song that follows 'You Can't Stop the Beat' is so funny and dark. I don't know the name, I just refer to as 'Blood on the Pavement'. "Don't drink and drive/please keep your head/Or come graduation day/you'll be dead".
I recommend this soundtrack to everyone. It's the kind of soundtrack that doesn't sound like a musical soundtrack.
Hairspray CD.......2007-01-14
If you loved the Broadway, you'll love this cd. A friend heard me playing the cd and asked what radio station I was listening to so he could tune in.
You Can't Stop the Beat!.......2006-11-30
I could try to come up with a more clever title for this review, but the title of the last track says it all about the soundtrack from the Broadway show Hairspray. I went reluctantly ($110 per ticket) on my last trip to NYC, and found to my surprise that I enjoyed the show and then adored the soundtrack--every number is performed with great gusto and excitement. "Good Morning Baltimore", sung by Marissa Winokur as Tracy Turnblad, the portly dance-crazed teen from 1963 Baltimore, gets the show off to a great start. "The Nicest Kids in Town" takes you back to the days of American Bandstand and its local knockoffs. "The Bells" was one I knew before seeing the show as my daughter and her friends sang (or at least lip synched) it at a drama camp talent show. "It Takes Two", a teen idol number sung by the character Link, sounds much better to me that the real Frankie Avalon/Ricky Nelson tunes of the early '60s that are its models. Other great songs, many with a civil rights theme following from the story of the film, follow, topped off by "Cooties"--an insult song sung by Tracy's rival Amber Von Tussle, and the showstopping (literally) finale "You Can't Stop the Beat", which sounds more urgent with every listen. Along the way the songwriters include some clever and slightly subversive lyrics--Tracy sings about the "rats on the street" who "all dance round my feet"; Linc croons that "Liz, she has her Dick"; and Penny Pingleton is ready to "call the NAACP" if anyone challenges her love for her African-American boyfriend Seaweed. Some have said that Hairspray is the Grease of the 21st century, but to me it's much better-more human; and also significantly better than the '80s comedy film on which the musical was based. We await with excitement and trepidation the film musical, which could hardly improve on the stage show, but in any event we'll get to hear those great songs again.
My #1 Fave show!.......2006-10-23
I heard this show is closing in 2007, while a movie's coming out Independence Day 2007!
My fave Hairspray songs are:
1. You Can't Stop The Beat
2. Good Morning Baltimore
3. Without Love
4. I Can Hear The Bells
5. Mama I'm a Big Girl Now
6. Run and Tell That

Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. This is exquisite stuff. --Aidin Vaziri

The genius of Coldplay.......2007-07-12
This review has been long overdue. But with 'Politik' playing in the background now, I have been kind of driven to write this. This album is Coldplay's best work so far and definitely in a different league compared to most other music in the same genre (rock). Even with the kind of following Coldplay has, I think they are quite underrated. For example, this album itself is ranked 473th on Rolling Stone's list of greatest albums. Are you kidding me?! I find that hard to believe. It's true that this music is not for all moods or for everyone. But it's musical creation at its finest with amazing melodies and brilliant lyrics. The songs are beautiful, melancholic, moody, introspective and profound. The beauty of Coldplay is that even the saddest song will end with a ray of hope (this is very unlike Radiohead with whom they are so frequently compared). My favorite tracks from this album are 'Politik', 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', 'The Scientist', 'Clocks', 'Green Eyes' and 'In My Place'. I mentioned about the lyrics earlier. I won't go too much into it (because it's hard to describe such stuff). I will just say that these are some of the most wonderful lyrics I have ever heard.
This is definitely a must-buy album. Twenty years from now, it will be considered as a landmark in the history of music.
ON the 10 BEST ALL TIME LIST.......2007-05-15
I have been listening to music since 1955. This is one of the best albums ever recorded.
A rush of life to the head.......2007-05-04
The Rush of blood to the head is propably one of my favourite albums in my stack of 900+ albums, I have to date.I have been a music lover from the age of 6,I'm now 39 closing in on 40.I have seen Coldplay live in Concert in Auckland,New Zealand back in 2003,they where fantastic. To me ,Warning Sign should have been number 1,maybe it's because of the Lyrics or the mere melody and strings in the backround that are so relavent to our lives I'm not sure, but it's a masterpiece the Commercial world has overlooked.A gem in it's own right, listen to it with open ears and enjoy.
A true appreciation for Chris Martin and his band.
Best CD ever.......2007-04-19
Not only is the music absolutely fabulous, but the lyrics are also amazing. I listen to this CD so much that my five year old daughter is singing along with the lyrics. Coldplay is fantastic, and this is their best CD (I own them all).
Good wallpaper music, but does not hold up to direct listening.......2007-04-05
They've got a great sound and the occasional evocative lyric, but as Coldplay's surface appeal wears off, time seems to be revealing there's not much depth here. The minimalism of their arrangements and, especially, writing can really be a snooze if you listen to Coldplay as anything more than background music.

Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he adds newfound meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true because Chris Martin genuinely sounds like a man picking over the bones of his life, coming up with just as many reasons to be cheerful as seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album--there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. --Dan Gennoe

Parachutes.......2007-04-05
For so long I wrote this band off as Radiohead wannabes. Granted, Chris Martin himself pretty much admits this sentiment to be true, but that does not mean Coldplay can't want to be like Radiohead and make good music at the same time. They don't strike as deep or reach as far, but they deliver more accessible music that isn't all that bad. In fact, Parachutes, their debut album, is quite good - no, it is great.
The album has a reserved, modest alternative rock sound that relies on acoustic guitars and keyboards just as much as it does electric guitars and drum rhythms. There aren't many layers or complexity to the ten tracks on Parachutes; they are beautifully simple. Chris Martin will probably never top his vocals on this album. It is his most vivid and honest delivery. One key aspect of Coldplay's music that has never gone well with me is the lyrics, and more specifically their topics. And Coldplay haven't seemed to move from where they started, but that isn't a real weak point for Parachutes, considering that this is where they started.
"Don't Panic" is one of the best songs on the album, both in terms of sound and lyrics, but when the electric guitar comes in you can immediately taste the Radiohead. "Shiver" is a much more "Coldplay" song that has a very endearing, melodic sound to it, and the fact that it isn't in 4/4 shows that Coldplay aren't just talented. But the lyrics - being about a girl - dull this display of intellect and creativity. They more than make up for it on "Spies," a darker-sounding drum-heavy piece that is surely metaphorical about life's worries, drug use, or maybe even communist China. "Sparks" is a beautiful, almost lounge-like piece that is fitting to be about a girl. Both "Yellow" and "Trouble" are overrated, but still very good songs that work perfectly on this album. "High Speed" is another very enjoyable Radiohead-flavored song that contains a lot of atmospheric guitar-work and a grooving bass line. "We Never Change" is perhaps the best song on the album, and is certainly the most expressive and meaningful. "Everything's Not Lost" is the perfect track to close out Parachutes, with its "this could go on forever" guitar and bass riffs and vocals.
The songs in and of themselves aren't particularly brilliant or overwhelming, but the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. The album cannot be expressed in a song or two like your average pop album. It's not exactly a "Dark Side Of The Moon"-type of album either, but everything works so well from beginning to end that it is in a sense exactly that kind of album.
coldplay "parashutes".......2007-03-19
i wait3 month and not recieve nothing-you lost this, i don't know condition.
Can anybody stop this thing ... before my head explodes ..........2007-02-03
Simply stated one of the best albums in existence. From the restrained beauty of "Yellow," to the haunting, unbelievably beautiful "Trouble," to my favorite "High Speed," this cd is astonishing. Stunning. Perfect. The last song "Everything's Not Lost" is ideal when you're at the end of your rope. It'll choke you up, but you'll feel better ... I cannot recommend this cd highly enough. This audio clips on the main page don't do any of the tracks justice ... they sound warped, tinny, and flat ... just buy it. The main review calls Parachutes "a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it." Yes ... yes.
Amazing debut album.......2007-02-02
Not often does a band come through and shatter the mold for popular music. Before this cd, Americans were fixated on 'boy bands' and Outkast. This release expanded the palette of nearly all who listened; the door was open for such bands as Keane, Franz Ferdinand, and even Modest Mouse to gain their fair share of radio play. A deeper and more spiritual side of music was exposed that had an overwhelmingly great effect on the industry as a whole. This CD is simply amazing, with every song complementing each other seamlessly.
While most casual listeners will be quick to enjoy the pop-friendly "Yellow," it is such songs as "Everything's Not Lost" and "Shiver" that best define this album.
Cold Play rocks.......2007-01-11
This Cd I bought for only two of the songs. I do however enjoy more than the two I got it for.Its not as good as X&Y but its good. I have bought most all Cold plays music and this band is awesome.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21
This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!
JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08
I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.
Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29
Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show
Not good at all.......2007-01-09
This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Evidence that one can make a musical about anything, Exhibit A: 1776. As one might expect, the whole concept of making a musical about the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence was greeted in the late 1960s with, well, ridicule. The show debuted on Broadway in 1969, and three years later, when its run finally ended, it was its producers who had the last laugh. In addition, it toured for an additional two years and beat out Hair (in 1969 yet!) for a Tony Award. This recording, with the original Broadway cast, includes many of the same actors who went on to star in the film, the version with which most audiences today are probably familiar. One notable exception is Rex Everhart, who replaced Howard da Silva at some performances and on this recording. But there's still William Daniels as John Adams, though in some cases his performance is more subdued than it was on film. Musically, 1776 is an odd creation, considering when it came into being. As one might expect, there's a lot of fife and drum going on, especially in the opening number and during "The Lees of Old Virginia." For those less than familiar with the plot, it hinges on the idealism of Adams, who's trying his best to back up the American Revolution with some legislative action, and spends much of his time arguing with either the Continental Congress or God, as in "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve": "A second flood, a simple famine / Plagues of locusts everywhere / Or a cataclysmic earthquake / I'd accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress / Good God, sir, was that fair?" (One could argue that he gets further with God.) While not entirely historically accurate, and containing some rather peculiar numbers (Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams sitting around debating what their new country's national bird is going to be ranks among the oddest), there's no questioning 1776's staying power. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Before Sondheim's COMPANY and after MAN OF LA MANCHA..........2007-04-30
For me, 1776 is a great companion to MAN OF LA MANCHA as one of the most entertaining AND intellectually worthy amalgams of music, lyrics, book, theme, plot, characterizations and dialogue to ever come out of pre-1970's Broadway musical theatre. Each song is like a little gem, and displays the broad range of emotions and ideas with which 1776 brims. Satiric, romantic, hilarious, heartbreaking, disturbing, dark, inspiring, thoughtful, humane, and even a little bawdy, the songs glide and tromp all over the map, as does the show itself. As with LA MANCHA, 1776 broke open the Broadway musical, making it a pitch-perfect example of what can truly make a musical more than a toe-tapping time killer... while never becoming tedious, pompous, windy, or dull. If anything, it crackles with suspense.
And as to the reviewer who was shocked that it would win out over HAIR? Listen to "Mamma Look Sharp" or "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" to hear exactly the play's political and often-unflattering ideological landscape. This was definitely a Vietnam-era play whose content was as disturbingly pertinent, then, as it is, now. And, despite all of this, the score and play never become leaden or preachy. On the contrary, each performance is a gem, and each character is witty and unique. Who knew that history could be a passionate and fun adventure?
Overrated Tony Award Winner.......2006-06-16
How could this musical win the Tony award having as a competitor a play like HAIR which - for many people - stands as an emblematic theatre piece of the 60's? Who remembers a tune out of this musical? On the contrary, "Aquarius", "I Got Life" or "Walking in Space" are still popular and they play all over the world. Even ZORBA and PROMISES PROMISES - both candidates for the award in the same year - have songs that are still remembered. 1776 may wake up patriotic feelings to American listeners which is quite understandable but the music and songs are old-fashioned, overrated and awfully boring.
Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!.......2005-12-18
1776 has become an institution, thanks to the motion picture which was made of this original Broadway show, and which starred most of the cast from the theatrical production. It gets rerun every July 4th week on some movie channel or local station!
William Daniels IS John Adams to many people, and even though the story of the birth of the United States probably wasn't this lyrical and lively, Composer Sherman Edwards was historically accurate in the facts of the tale.
In addition to learning about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this is also love story... in fact two love stories, with John Adams and his wife Abigail, separated by circumstance and interacting only in his mind, and Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, here, played by the big throated (and now legendary) Betty Buckley.
There is also a sense of fraternity, with the members of the Continental Congress grappling with the concept of breaking away from a tyranical ruler. And even though you know the outcome, the story is still filled with tension and excitement in the mechanics of it. Just how DID this country get formed?
The disc's liner notes explain the show's libretto and give you some rare behind-the-scenes info about the creation of the musical, the challenges it faced before becoming the standard that it now is, and a bit about the amazing Mr. Edwards, which is a story worthy of being told as well.
It's an Independence Day must!
Saw this on Broadway .......2005-11-12
Saw this show, with original cast, on Broadway in '69 and it has stayed with me ever since then. Every time I listen to these songs, I laugh. The historical figures (done with some tongue-in-cheek) are highly entertaining and even better if you see the movie. I would recommend the dvd for a great, lighthearted evening, and good family entertainment. You can't miss with this one! A winner on all fronts.
Quite a premise.......2005-07-20
Though it seems an odd choice to write a musical about, it works well. The whole thing seems a bit dated now, it still has great songs. Most dimpressive song, definately "Molasses to Rum". I gave it 4 stars for THAT song.

It's not that surprising that Rent, a successful musical with a strong youth following, would have transferred from the New York stage to film. What is remarkable is that the material has aged very well and that most of the original cast have made the trip to the silver screen. This is no small feat since nearly ten years have elapsed since the show's Off-Broadway debut and the film's release. When it opened in 1996, Jonathan Larson's rock musical based on neobohemian life in the gritty East Village felt a bit hackneyed at times; now, Rent feels more like a Broadway fantasy about life on the edge, and that new element actually works in the show's favor. The two cast additions--Rosario Dawson (replacing Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi) and Tracie Thomas (replacing Fredi Walker as Joanne)--act well and with emotion, but aren't quite powerful enough. They are eclipsed by vets such as Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, and Taye Diggs, who of course had the chance to perfect their roles on stage and can also be heard on the original cast recording. It's a pleasure to hear these stalwarts New York performers strut their stuff again. This soundtrack will please the show's fans, and probably attract new ones. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
One of the longest-running shows (since 1996) in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, RENT was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its 10th year on stage by coming to the big screen, accompanied by RENT The Motion Picture Soundtrack, produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette).

You can practically feel the scenes come to life through the sound track! Its that good. Any true rent head worth a salt to his or her name would have this in their collection. It is too good to pass up!
Love this Musical!!.......2007-06-20
I absolutely loved this in the movie form and would love to see the live show. But since that will be a while in coming; getting the soundtrack is the next best thing. These people can SING! This way I can hear the songs anywhere at anytime; not just watching the movie.
great soundtrack.......2007-04-26
I have own this soundtrack pretty much since it came out...
I have never been that big on musicals, but when the movie first came out my friend dragged me to the movies with him to see the movie, and right away I fell in love with it...and for the next week I had the songs stuck in my head, they just wouldn't go away...they haunted me in my sleep, but in a good way...I fall in love with all the music, so i had to get this soundtrack so I would be able to listen to these wonderful songs all the time, especially till the movie came out onto dvd, which i also own and love to death. The songs are so addictive...I am actually listening to the soundtrack as I'm writing this review, I can't pick out one song that is my favorite, I love all of them. If i had to choice "Will I" or "Without You". "Will I" is such a touching song on its own, but when its patterned with the movie it hit me hard, great song, it brings tears to my eyes when i listen it. And the same goes with "Without You" its just a very touching song and it connects with my life. Overall one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.
First Time a Film has been as Good as the Original Musical.......2007-02-23
I will keep this short, because " M J Heilbron Jr. 'Dr. Mo' " said it perfectly.
I have never seen a movie that has been able to capture everything a musical did.
The actors were perfectly selected for the cast. The voices amazing and the acting flawless. Who knew Taye Diggs could act and sing.
Buy this CD. You will love it every bit as much as you loved the original Broadway CD... if not more.
The music will captivate you.......2007-02-21
Even though I have the CD, whenever I'm flipping channels and I come across the movie "Rent", no matter how many times I've seen it and regardless of what point the movie is at, it is like I am mesmerized, and I know from experience that I am going nowhere until the movie is over. My husband feels the same way and we've both discussed why this is. The answer is the music. It actually pulls us both along through the movie. Just as one great song ends, another begins, and we can't pull ourselves away until the movie - and thus the music - ends. There actually isn't a tedious, boring, or even mediocre piece in the whole musical. Every song has a style different from all of the others and each is quite powerful. The music is not the meat on the bones in this movie version of the Broadway musical, it is actually the very bones under the meat. My favorite is "I'll Cover You". Remarkably, this song works both as an upbeat love song for Angel and Collins and also as a funeral dirge. It is very amazing that Jonathan Larson, on his first outing, could come up with even one of these amazing songs, much less all of them. It makes me sad not only for the loss of Jonathan Larson the human being, but the loss of such an amazing artist. I highly recommend this CD. I think you'll find yourself hooked on these unique and powerful tunes.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub "Hopelandic"--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening "Svefn-G-Englar" that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on "Flugufrelsarinn," or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of "Ny Batteri." --Amazon.co.uk

The Good Reviews Are Apparenthetically ( Priceless ).......2007-07-09
Aren't All Those Good Reviews JUST Priceless ?
With tongue firmly poked in cheek. Being "Visually Enhanced" Music is, first, enjoyed by the eye.
Which is to say that if the COVER is "interesting" the MUSIC is, possibabblely, at least as "inspired."
Take for instance the COVER of "Rock Bottom"... EXACTLY Why Mr. Wyatt and Alfraidie Cat ever changed that is beyond understanding, however it still touches the heart all the way up the charts. With that in mind, Sigur's Ro's's A'gaetis's Byrjun's, (it is with a tear on the other cheek this type-tighter does not connect the a to the e,) COVER has been observed for the past 8 years or so, picked up and perused and neatly replaced neatly in the bin still in protective placenta . ( See :: Put THAT Book Back on the Shelf and 787 Ray Johnson gives birth to CalligRayphy's new hole ) So it passes the "Visual Review". The Smekkleysa alone is worth the price. Honestly up until now only SNIPPETS of this have reached our ears and thus just the SNIPPETS and jib-lettes are being review here, so don't expect the WHOLE Inch-A-La-La. To make it short and tweet :: The SNIPPETS are not nearly long enough, however having purchased this, we are looking forward to cele-berating the entire Jam Boring Jamboree . And with tongue still snuggling deep in cheek, we do not need to see yet another review of this review so if you wanna review this review please send a stamped self addressed antelope or Deer Post Card To :: rain rien nevermind 2101 baneberry way east, Chanhassen, MN 55317 you sofa with some fingernails and religious overtomes. AMAZING MUSIC BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF SOME POP MUSIC CRITICS MINDS.......2007-06-22
Like the other reviewer nearby, I also have a pet peeve about this word "pretentious" when applied to Sigur Ros (or other arful pop). It is a universal cliche amongst reviewers who don't like art rock or progressive rock. The word "pretentious" actually means:
---adjective DISAPPROVING
---trying to appear or sound more important or clever than you are,
especially in matters of art and literature:
---a pretentious art critic
---The novel deals with grand themes, but is never heavy or pretentious.
-- characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
-- making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious
I've heard this word all my life because apparently I like a lot of music that is "pretentious." The last time I heard it used was recently on a radio special about the 40th anniversary for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which one critic decried as "the beginning of pretentiousness in pop music". And this for an album that is consistently at the top of almost every list as the most important album ever made-- I guess a LOT of people like pretentious art.
What these critics are saying is that pop and rock musicians that have other musical influences (i.e., world music, classical music, jazz music) are somehow falsely trying to BE world musicians, classical musicians, and jazz musicians by using those influences. Or that lyricist that have other influences (i.e., poetry) are trying to BE poets. In reality, all they are is open-minded pop and rock musicians, willing to experiment with skills they have that lie beyond the boundaries of early rock styles (i.e., Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.).
I'm not sure why it makes you pretentious simply because you have musical skills beyond pop and rock, but I can't imagine a more boring scenario than a genre that didn't grow or challenge itself. In reality, this is how the language of an art form evolves. The heyday for what Sigur Ros is trying to do was between 1967-1977, when progressive rock was literally a top ten chart topping phenomenon.
In the end, this is all "pretentious" means when used by such critics: they don't like the styles of music that exist midway between folk and classical, or rock and jazz, or whatever and whatever. I love music rooted in pop, rock, and folk that is embellished by all sorts of influences from more complicated genres. I love the fact that a song can swing from a gentle little folk tune to a complicated instrumental movement. I also love the storytelling aspect of longer pieces of music and concept albums-- it gives the lyricist more time to stretch out and explore a theme. These artists are not trying to be something that they are not, they are being exactly what they ARE: pop artists with ears open to other influences. This happened as soon as Paul McCartney (in 1967) came into the studio after hearing a classical work with a Bach trumpet, and he wrote and plopped a similar trumpet arrangement in "Penny Lane." It happened when Brian Wilson crumbled the Beach Boys formulaic song structure (1966) and started to record his collage piece SMiLE. And then for ten odd years after, much of the best of rock music had similar boundary-breaking tendencies.
Sigur Ros is very much in the art-rock category. You can see their lead singer from one or two vantage points (albeit extreme ones): either he is the most otherworldly supremely beautiful gift to pop music that has ever happened, or he is a pretentious pseudo-opera singer. And really, which vantage you choose depends on whether or not you are moved by his work. You can tell which camp I fit in-- I think he's one of the most important pop artists on the planet, and you'd have to be crazy not to at least give him a chance to work his magic on you. Undescribable...Breathtaking.........2007-05-16
Breathtaking is truly the only word that describes this album as a whole. It's one of the most stunning and beautiful albums i've ever heard, and I don't even understand a single word that's sung! There's not a single bad track on this album, each song makes you not only feel as if you're in Iceland watching the sunrise, but such uplifting, spiritual emotion. Sigur Ros might not be considered "easy listening" to those who are new to them...but once you hear this album, you just don't give a damn. Their music speaks volumes, you FEEL what they're saying, not what they're saying. This album is one of the best albums ever, once again showing how Icelanders sure know how to play their music.
Music never heard describing a place only imagined.......2007-05-12
This is one of the 10 best albums I've ever heard. Cannot recommend this album enough. If you have never heard of Sigur Ros you might want to borrow an album from a friend first but if you have remotely heard of them you know no words can describe their sound, so buy this album now!!!
