Yoakam was coming off a platinum debut album with a wiseass title (Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc.) when he released Hillbilly Deluxe. Neither as hard-nosed nor as bereft as he'd soon be sounding, Deluxe was nonetheless both a smart, stylized missive and the kind of nouveau honky-tonk set that country radio was suddenly ready to eat up. With stuff like "Little Ways," "Please, Please Baby," and "Johnson's Love" on the plate, it tasted great. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
King of rockabilly.......2005-12-28
This is Dwight's sophomore release, and it sounds like he's been doing it for years! A great follow-up to "Guitars, Cadillacs....." This one has a little more "rockabilly" than his first album, but is often considered by many, to be his best work. I'll disagree with that and say "Tomorrow's Sound Today" and "This Time" were far better, but this one still deserves an A+. This album includes a cover of the great Stonewall Jackson's "Smoke Along the Tracks", as well as a cover of Lefty's "Always Late..."; both numbers are superb covers and Dwight does justice to both. Persoanlly, I say the best tracks are "1,000 Miles" and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". This is one any true country music fan must own. A+
Hillbilly Deluxe, Dwight Yoakam.......2005-07-20
Wonderful CD. I was so glad to find it. I have worn out a cassette of the same title and have been unable to find this anywhere. Some songs on here that are not on his other CD's. Thanks, Amazon!
Brilliant rocking country album.......2004-04-09
This was Dwight's second album (after Guitars Cadillacs). It contains seven original songs, all written by Dwight, and three covers. The overall feel of the album is upbeat, yet the lyrics are generally sadder than the rockabilly-styled musical backing would suggest. Most of the songs here are up-tempo or mid-tempo. The only ballads are Please please baby, Johnson's love and 1,000 miles. It occurs to me that 1,000 is a number that Dwight seems to find significant because he later recorded a song titled A thousand miles from nowhere as well as including the number in the title of one of his compilations.
The album yielded four major country hits - Little sister (a cover of the Elvis Presley classic from the early sixties), Always late with your kisses (a cover of a Lefty Frizzell country hit from the fifties), Please please baby (one of only two ballads on this album - the other being Johnson's love) and Little ways. The third cover here, Smoke along the track, is a train song that was originally recorded by Stonewall Jackson in the fifties.
This is, as I would expect, a high quality album from Dwight. By his own very high standards, it is not his strongest album but if you're serious about Dwight's music, this is essential. If you only want one or two of Dwight's albums, go for one or both of the compilations, Just lookin' for a hit and Last chance for 1,000 years.
Only a slight letdown from first album........2003-07-23
There's just no getting around it (for me anyway): this album simply does not have the electricity of *Guitars, Cadillacs, etc.*, the overall range of *If There Was a Way*, or the depth of the great *This Time*. Having said that, what's here is still very good and certainly worth having in your collection.
Both "Little Ways" and "Smoke along the Track" are good but are pretty much standard country fare. The same is true of "Always Late with Your Kisses", "Throughout All Time", and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". They're all good songs but there's nothing extra special about them. However, the remake of the Elvis standard "Little Sister" is reminiscent of the remake of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" from the first album. Both recall the old adage that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The real strengths of the album lie in "Johnson's Love", a great ballad, "Please, Please Baby", an electric country-rocker, "Readin', Rightin', Rt. 23", and the best of the bunch, "1,000 Miles", not to be confused with "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" from the *This Time* album. Enjoy.
Classic Dwight.......2003-02-20
This album is a sure favorite of mine, although not as great as Guitars, Cadillacs, etc. this album is exceptional. My favorite tracks are obvious favorites like Little Ways ,Please, Please Baby , Little Sister and Readin' ..RT23. 1000 miles is the most forlorn and longing song in existence, telling a tale of a busted marriage and reflecting on the loss. This is an awesome album, worth many many listens. I highly suggest this album, it is among Dwights top 3 albums.

first meeting.......2001-11-15
this was the first really exposure that i had with him and his touch on the saxophone with most all of the songs that were among my favorites. his touch, beat and arrangement were all suberb and turned me solidly into one of his fans.
I had heard some of his tunes on the radio and knew of him but had never really listened to his talent and touch.
Thus now I'm going to be on the look out for more of his music as I can sit back and relax to his playing the top tunes of yesterday.

Anticipated release!.......2005-03-16
When I wrote this review, there was only one album left in stock. After listening to it, now I know why. It's a must-have addition to any true house lover's collection. It has all the pioneers with great tracks. I hope you love it as much as I do.

MUST HAVE for Elton fans!.......2007-06-06
The box says there are several bonus videos, but the DVD only has 1 (the one with Robert Downey Jr.) But the rest is missing! I noticed the box says "dolby digital 5.1" but the DVD in the boxset I bought also has the DTS mix (great sound BTW). Does this mean they eliminated the rest of the bonus videos in order to make room for the DTS mix? Anyone else got the same boxset than me?

Product Description
This artist's sophomore effort is an engaging tour de force of an eclectic style that bridges 1960's pop with classic country. This disc could be called "rock" if not for the unique pedal steel guitar lines and cool, twang-spank production. Marc Corey Lee's sound echos the elegant stylings of mid-century popular music. "I Found Heaven" is a swampy rocker at heart, bouyed by Greg Liesz's searing dobro lines. "Please" is a glimmering ballad with all the passion and musical character of the best of Sinatra. Overall, think of putting Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and John Denver in a blender and spicing it all up with a little salsa and a touch of Dwight Yoakam. Marc's powerful, clear tenor and his sophisticated writing make a world-class package for any fan of alternative music.
Customer Reviews:
This is what country music should sound like!.......2005-06-30
I got an email from musician, Marc Corey Lee, asking me if I'd like to receive a copy of his latest CD, Jetset Deluxe. He's a regular reader at my blog, Vintage Rock, and based on the reviews I'd already written, he thought I might like to listen to his music. I've never been known to turn down anything free (that probably comes from being a broke college student) so of course I said, "send away." I'm a pretty open-minded girl and I've been known to let an assortment of different styles and genres of music creep into my vast CD collection and subconsious.
When I received his CD via mail and a smile crossed my face. I love mail of every shape, size, and kind, as long as its not junk mail...you know, those 12 CDs for a penny offers that I've had to force myself to turn down; there has to be a hitch in such a great offer, hidden somewhere in microscopic fine print. Upon opening up the envelope, my first immediate impression of the CD cover was, "damn, this guy looks kind of like Chris Isaak." Which isn't a bad thing at all since Wicked Game is my all time favorite music video, and not for the anoxeric model chick, I can assure you. As I flipped the case over, my doubts begin to emerge. With song titles like "Mister Heartache" and "South of San Antone," I silently groaned. This can't be a country CD, can it? Country music is the one genre of music I've been consistently dissapointed with my entie life. Its impossible to escape from it because I live the center of midwest hickville....La Porte City, Iowa.
When I was six, I think there were only two types of music I'd been exposed to: country music and classic rock. I could easily go from listening to Garth Brooks "Thunder Rolls" (originally sung by Tanya Tucker btw) to belting along with Robert Plant on "Heartbreaker." But as I got older it seemed as if all country music was being freakishly mutated into what I like to call "cowboy charictures." Girl country crooners turned into souless, comically bad Britney Spears impersonators with Texas twang and Gucci cowboy boots. The men of country music also fell pray to fashion and tried to bring "edge" to their look by wearing wife beaters and big black, ten gallon hats. It was no longer about musical integrity...it was about how many socks guys could shove in their skintight jeans, fashionally ripped in all the "right" places. While country musicians appearance changed drasticially, their music seemed to de-evolve and turn into a bland mix of power ballads and soft rock.
So of course, that's what brought me to the rock n' roll path and led me to create my blog in the first place. I was trying to find a way to get as far away from the country music genre as possible. I vowed to always flip past CMT and never listen to any country albums that weren't from the 50's or 60's (unless it was Garth Brooks or Mary Chapin Carpenter.) So it took a lot of personal coaxing to get myself to put the disc into my CD player...but I did because I try never to judge music I'm supposed to review until after I give the entire disc a listening to.
The second I heard Marc's vocals, I knew that this was a musician with some serious chops. His voice reminds me of Roy Orbision mixed with a bit of John Denver and Chris Isaak thrown in for good measure. He does have all the basic properties of country music including steel guitars, but it doesn't make me feel like line dancing...all i want to do is get out my flowery skirt and twirl around my living room as if I was a ballerina from Little House on the Prarie. Listening to his songs, "Just One Moment" and "Cowboys and Angels" I got this relaxed feeling I get when I listen to Roy Orbison's "Only the Lonely." Marc Corey Lee does not play grinding, grungey guitar rock. He also isn't an intense vocalist that wants to peel paint off the walls whenever he opens his mouth. Marc makes the kind of music you listen to when you're lazing around on a sunny day, drinking lemonade on your front porch and imagining what the puffy clould shapes remind you of.
He even packs some edge into his more upbeat numbers. "Ghosts In Paradise" even had a James Bondish type of feel to it, evoking old spy sitcoms like Get Smart. "The First Time" even has a bit of sarcism and nilhism in its tone. With lyrics like " You're the last thing I dream of and the first thing I leave far behind" you know he's speaking from experience and not writing sugar coated sappy love songs like the horrible country cover of All-4-One's "I Swear." He can be romantic though, when he wants to be and I'm sure he has no trouble charming the ladies from stage with his tune, "Please." I almost swoon when he sings (in his very beautiuful voice) "If this were another place and time I would give into you/ The promise of your kiss, your touch/ and making love to you.
I've listened to Jetset Deluxe a few times now, and I'm not sick of it all. It grows on you more each time you listen to it...kind of the way Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection effects me in subtly different ways each time I give it a spin on the hi-fi. Don't let the "country thing" steer you away Marc Corey Lee's music...He's got a great set of pipes, he writes his own music, knows how to play his six string and 12 string, and he reads Vintage Rock. Not too much to complain about, nothing at all comes to mind in fact. Thanks for sharing the music Marc!
