What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Curt Smith Soul On Board.......2004-08-10
As a long time Tears For Fears fan I always though Curt was never used enough in Tears For Fears in the early days he sang more lead vocals and was as good as Orzabal If not better.the last Tears album he hardly sang except 2 or 3 songs so I hoped he would record an album of him singing solo.while not all of the songs are great there are some classic songs Calling Out,the title track,Beautiful To Me and Words are all great and the first two should of been big singles .the second side starts out great then get's worse with the rap song being the low point.more enjoyable than the Curt less Tears For Fears albums Roland released after Curt left.as a singer/songwriter myself this is a great album vocally and production wise for me to aspire to record.any Tears fan will enjoy it.
A Vital Piece of History for TFF Fans.......2002-12-28
I didn't find this to be a great CD in and of itself. Yes a couple of the songs are pretty good, but the overall value of the CD is in putting together more of the story about what was happening post break-up to the two branches of sound from the the TFF tree. My rating would depend on the person buying it. A big TFF fan would want it as part of their collection as a sort of missing link between TFF and Mayfield, but as a stand alone CD to a casual listener...you may want to look at his newer stuff.
mostly for fans, but..........1999-03-10
I dont think anyone would argue that Roland Orzabal is the by far the more accomplished musician, and cutting edge talent. Yet, Curt Smith is hardly an Andrew Ridgely no-talent, and does not deserve all the merciless invective he has had heaped on this effort. While no "Elemental", Smith's lovely vocals are pleasant enough to listen to, and there are at least a few catchy melodies enhanced by some first rate bass work. For the most part, the album comes across as lesser Culture Club songs with a new-age ambience. Mostly for fans.

Tears for Fears...Not!.......2006-07-14
If you are purchasing this item for the Tears for Fears aspect...look elsewhere. I have everything that "Tears for Fears" put out; the material here resembles little of the Tears for Fears style except for maybe some of the work on "Sowing the Seeds". Yet this is a likeable work...a bit upbeat. Tears for Fears fans will recognize Curt's unique tone quality...but the music itself lacks the "edge" of Roland Orzabal who of course continued the Tears for Fears name for a number of albums after splitting. But that's ok with me...the music has an upbeat adult contemporary feel to it... not a special song, but easy to listen to as a whole album. I also own the Mayfield album which I like a bit more...but for those looking for something new, I do recommend this!

Customer Reviews:
Robeson at his best.......2001-03-24
This album consists of recordings Paul Robeson made in Britain durong the 1920s. He is accompanied by the great pianist Lawrence Brown or by a small orchestra led by Ray Noble. The songs on this disc are spirituals or pop songs of the era, and Robeson shines on every one of them. Robeson has an uncanny ability to make any song his own property, and this is especially true on his version of "Little Pal" - originally a saccharine semi-racist ballad written for Al Jolson. Robeson turns the song into a searing lament of an estranged father, and makes the song valid even today with his urgent, committed delivery. The majority of the songs on the cd are spirituals, and Robeson's versions are definitive in every sense of the word. All in all, there isn't a bad track here, and as an introduction to Robeson's work the record is priceless. The only aspect worth criticizing is the fact that the liner notes seem to shy away from the fact that Robeson was the first important black artist to actively fight for civil rights. The music here, however, is extremely beautiful.
