Product Description
MATRAZ is the name of a current Chilean Progressive rock band, that gained an interesting position on the prolific Southamerican scene. "Tiempo" has been released in 1999 on the Mylodon label, and is today reissued by Musea. This first album is dominated by two opposed tendencies that were brilliantly put together here: the symphonic Progressive rock that is so dear to the South-American connoisseurs and the complex DREAM THEATER-like heavy-metal music. The first tendency is especially affirmed by Diego ABURTO's keyboards, which are particularly featured during piano parts. The guitarist Claudio CORDERO plays in turn powerful and cutting riffs that don't leave the slightest ambiguity ! Some jazzy breaths also appear for good measure. Let's also note that each of the four long tracks has been written by a different musician. Five years later, the second opus "Gritare" (2004) sees the arrival of a fifth member. As skilful in ethereal passages as in epic stampedes,! the divine female singer Loreto CHAPARRO actually leads the music with a voice that can remind of that of Mariela GONZALEZ (NEXUS). This true achievement ends with a superb nearly 20 minute-long epic. Don't miss it, on no account whatsoever !

Twenty discs and more than two decades into his solo career, Chayanne has nothing left to prove. The handsome entertainer has managed to stay afloat in the ever-fickle world of Latin pop, nary missing a beat. Chayanne has topped worldwide charts, shimmied on the silver screen alongside Vanessa Williams, and hawked soft drinks--all without a major push to the Anglo music market. Mi Tiempo, then, is the sound of a singer comfortable in his career. Frequent collaborator Estefano handles the bulk of the songwriting, and ballads mingle easily with a series of uptempo grooves. It makes for a fun, fluid collection. Listen to how the pulsing "Bailarina" gives way to the sweeping "Te Amare." Producers Sebastian de Peyrecave and José Gentile highlight Chayanne's strengths but still leave room for adventurous outings. "Me Voy a Rio" and "Lola" are irresistible calls to the dance floor; you can almost visualize Chayanne's electric choreography. And swoon-worthy first single "Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo" benefits from the glittering rock edge felt throughout Mi Tiempo. Another fine moment from one of the genre's often-overlooked heavyweights. --Joey Guerra

I purchased the cd when it was first released, but waiting until now to give my review as I needed to listen to it for awhile. Now that I have taken the time to really listen to Chayanne's Mi Tiempo (And I listened to it alot) I must say - I love the whole cd - You gotta check it out!
I too will be seeing Chayanne in concert (San Jose) tomorrow night (5-27-07) Hopefully he performs many of the songs on Mi Tiempo! Awesome cd!
Everyone has their own flavor for music. But if you are one who likes Latin music - Chayanne's Mi Tiempo is your flavor!

Este nuevo disco de Chayanne es muy variado y muy romantico! Me encanta!

5 out of 5 stars Mi Tiempo.......2007-04-29

I have to say this album is fantastic!!! The music is sexy, and keeps you wanting more. It has a different style, but yet keeps Chayanne's essence. His voice is more mature, and more powerful!! Some of the songs have an island feel to them. They have Brazilian, and Jamaican sounds, which most were done, and written by singer/songwriter Estefano. He is responsible for Torero, Boom boom, Dejaria todo, Baila baila, Sentada aqui en mi alma, and many more of his greatest hits! You can sample the songs at his website, recent activity, and click on multimedia, then you will see his albums there. You can sample all of them. You can also get all the lyrics there. His first release for this album, Si nos quedara poco tiempo, has already been number 1 in most parts of the world, and this album has been number 1 already on the Billboard chart. He is my favorite singer, and I can't wait to see this gorgeous amazing talented man in concert this Thurs May 3,in NYC, at MSG!! If anyone wants to see a future upcoming concert, you can click his calender at the website for upcoming dates.

5 out of 5 stars Chayanne delivers again.......2007-04-19

Unlike some artists who repackage the same formula album after album, Chayanne continues to grow and develop, exploring new sounds on each new album without completely abandoning what his fans love. This one is fantastic.

My only complaint is that this CD does not contain the lyrics in the liner notes, however the website address is provided and the lyrics are available there.

This inexpensively priced 3-CD set of music from the 2006 Lugano Festival with pianist Martha Argerich at its center presents a fascinating cross-section of chamber music, expertly performed. In addition to Argerich, we hear from 15 other instrumentalists - pianists, cellists, violinists, violists, a flugelhorn player (who plays along with Argerich in three of Schumann's Fantasiestücke, to very strange and not very welcome effect), and a wind ensemble made up of members of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana that plays with cellist Gautier Caupcon in Friedrich Gulda's Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra: a jazzy, definitely eclectic, and playful finale to the third CD. The infrequently played but rapturous Schumann Piano Quartet is a particular treat. Ravel's transcriptions of two Debussy Nocturnes for two pianos played by Sergio Tiempo and Karin Lechner are a delight as well. This is an off-the-beaten-track collection that will fascinate true devotees of chamber music. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Schumann, not much Argerich, plus some real oddities.......2007-06-08

EMI has gotten into the pleasanat habit of issuing a 3-CD bargain box of Martha Argerich's summer music from Lugano, and they are caviar for chamber music lovers, mixing familiar and unfamiliar works in sterling live performances. It's hard to think of any comparable series meeting such high standards since the heyday of the Marlboro Festival under Rudolf Serkin in the Fifties and Sixties. This 2006 edition is no exception, my only disappointment being the absence of Argerich herself in so many works. She even gives up her place in the two-piano arrangement of Debussy's Nocturnes to her protege Sergio Tiempo (she has been a long-time devotee, if not addict, of two-piano arrangements that almost every other serious musician eschews).

The dominance of works by Schumann reflects Ms. Argerich's personal fondness for him, and she appears in the Piano Quartet, which has enjoyed a wonderful, highly personal reading by Glenn Gould and the Juilliard Qt. (Sony), among others. This one displays every virtue of live musicmaking, with Argerich's fervent, spontaneous playing leading the way. Compared to earlier sets, the 2006 collection contains more rarities and because of all the sSchumann, less representation by great composers. The flugelhorn arrangement of Schumann's Fantasiestucke for clarinet sounds like a joke. The once unknown Tanayev Piano Quintet gets a committed reading that should help to boost its popularity. The Debbusy Nocturnes actually bring pleasure in the two-piano arrangement. You won't be prepared for Gulda's concerto for Cello and Piano, which sounds like three-beer night at your local German jazz club. But its worth a smile and a listen.

In the end, however, this installment might be best left to connoisseurs while newcomers to Argerich's summer festivities should begin with the earlier, more conventional editions.

Here's the listing of works and personnel since Amazon doesn't supply it:

Martha Argerich / Renaud Capucon / Lida Chen / Gautier Capucon - Piano Quartet in Eb op.47 (Schumann).

Gautier Capucon / Gabriela Montero - Sonata for cello and piano No.2 in D op.58 (Mendelssohn).

Sergei Nakariakov / Martha Argerich - Fantasiestucke op.73 - version for flugelhorn and piano (Schumann).

Nicholas Angelich / Renaud Capucon / Gautier Capucon - Piano Trio in D minor op.63 (Schumann).

Lilya Zilberstein / Dora Schwarzberg / Lucy Hall / Nora Romanoff-Schwarzberg / Jorge Bosso - Piano Quintet in G minor op.30 (Taneyev).

Sergio Tiempo / Karin Lechner - Three Nocturnes : Nuages / Fetes (Debussy transcribed for two piano Ravel).

Alissa Margulis / Polina Leschenko - Sonata for violin and piano No.1 (Schnittke).

Gautier Capucon / Alexander Rabinovich-Barakovsky - Concerto for cello and windband (Gulda).

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what he's singing about but he IS singing @}->---.......2006-08-05

As a long time fan of Marc Anthony, I have all of his cds. I love his voice because while it's powerful, it's also smooth and heavenly. I love all of his work, but there is something about him singing in spanish. It's obviously so natural to him and he's at his best then. Not that I know what he's singing about, but the songs are so stunning and beautiful - it almost doesn't matter.
On here, the two standout songs are Te Conozco Bien and a beautiful ballad Hasta Ayer. I love to listen to this often because it's soothing after a long day. While I do wish he'd release more english speaking albums, again, I think he's at his best singing spanish. Pick this up if you are a salsa or a Marc Anthony fan. It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album by Marc Anthony.......2005-10-27

I originally purchased this tape over eight years ago. I had a super long commute and it never left my car. Now that I no longer have a commute, or a tape deck in my truck for that matter, I decided to purchase the CD for in home use. And USE it I do. There are not a lot of songs on the CD but as the old saying goes its quality not quantity that counts. I own other Marc Anthony CD's but this is, by far, the best.
Buy it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Todo esta tan rico!.......2004-12-07

I truly don't know how ANY Marc Anthony CD can go unnoticed---particularly the Spanish language albums. This man is truly one of the greatest salseros of today. He mixes his own funky, fresh flavor with traditional salsa coros and beautiful orchestration (due in no small part to Sergio George, one of the greatest Latin music producers today).

This album starts off on a high and energetic note with "Se Me Sigue Olvidando." I love the piano intro! It only gets better from there. Some of his most well-loved salsa tunes are front and center on this CD. They include "Te Conozco Bien," "Nadie Como Ella," and "Te Amare." There is also an achingly beautiful ballad in "Hasta Ayer." If anything, Marc needs to record more romantic ballads. I can guarantee you, that if he doesn't break your heart with his devestatingly beautiful vocals, the guitar riffs will melt even the iciest heart. Many of these songs are also featured on "Desde El Principio," a retrospective of Marc's great salsa career.

5 out of 5 stars The best Marc Anthony album ever!.......2004-08-20

This is my very favorite Marc Anthony album. "Se Me Sigue Olvidando", "Te Amaré", and "Nadie Como Ella", are my three favorite songs on this album. None of his other albums could ever compare to this one.

Cafe Tacuba have a kind of childish mood that may bother some people. If there is a basic story in their lyrics is about the problem of love among younsters, the simple desire for dance, and the weird aspects of love and reality. However, their strenght is their high quality as musicians. Mainly, what should be stressed is both their high capacity for styles mixture and their highly creative covers. They jump from "ranchera" to ska, or reagge , or trash , or disco. Their covers of "Ojalá que llueva café" (Juan Luis Guerra), "No controles" (Mecano) or "Cómo te extraño" (Leo Dan) demonstrate both their creativity and exploration over different kind of music. Tiempo transcurrido is probably the best example of all their "chamaleonistic" capacity. Undoubtely, one of the best recopilation in the rock en español era.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST BAND OF THIS CENTURY!!!.......2002-12-31

I hate greatest hit albums, but whatever you end up buying of Cafe Tacuba, I GUARANTEE, you will not be dissapointed. I prefer getting each album by itself because only they know why they set them up the way they did, but if you'd like to get a taste of their flavor then a greatest hits is the way to go.

I'm a very picky musician, but Cafe Tacuba set me straight and made me an addict. I bought the album "RE" about 3 weeks ago, i listen to it EVERY ... DAY!!! and up to now, i have not got tired of it. I recommend anything that the Tacubos put their hands on. PEACE!

Since Martha Argerich has abandoned solo recitals and studio recordings, her new CDs feature concert collaborations with like-minded friends and protégés. Whatever the negatives of such live recordings may be, the upside trumps them handily since, if we're lucky, some of the sparks generated by musicians in a concert venue will be captured. With this set drawn from the 2005 Lugano Festival we're decidedly lucky, for musical electricity courses through all three discs. There are nine works by eight composers ranging from Mendelssohn to Guastavino, all played with spontaneity and full-blooded Romanticism. Argerich is onstage for five of them, including such rarities as Brahms' two-piano version of his Variations on a theme of Haydn, where she's partnered by Polina Leschenko, and, with Piotr Anderszewski, Grieg's full-dress arrangement for two pianos of Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 16, an oddity whose curiosity value outweighs the sacrilege. There's also the sensuous Argentine and Andalucian encores and the teenage Beethoven's Piano Quartet set alongside masterpieces such as the Brahms Piano Quintet, Op. 34 and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No.2, both played with a captivating blend of sensitivity and fervor. For many the highlight will be two big Rachmaninoff works on Disc Two - Mischa Maisky's big-toned cello in the master's G minor Cello Sonata, whose episodic qualities the soloist turns into virtues, and the Suite No. 2 for two pianos, passionately played by Argerich and Gabriela Montero. Get this, put it in your player, and be transported to Festival-level performances by established masters and a new generation of stars. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-06-06

I felt like standing up and clapping with the audience after each piece. This CD is absolutely wonderful, in all aspects. The musicanship is impeccable and the production and sound quality couldn't be better.

I picked it out to hear the Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 2, and that piece is done so vibrantly and ecstatically that it's surely one of the best on record. Not to say that the other pieces aren't on an equally high level.

I can't imagine any classical music fan, and especially chamber music fans, being disappointed with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars PASSING IT ON TO THE YOUNG.......2007-03-06

In this three disc set of the 2005 Lugano festival. A festival as evidenced by this recording that was filled with great music making and reeking of Martha Argerich's talents and too of her musical generosity. She plays on this recording in about every other number introducing, for the most part, some rather unfamiliar works (i.e. the Beethoven VERY early Piano quartet which is wonderful sounding a little like some Haydn and Mozart with the unmistakable stamp of dear Ludwig) Most of the time, she let her young friends and/or colleagues have the "Juicier" numbers--Mendelssohn's 2nd trio(the performers therein particularly shine in the effervescent 3rd movement and the religiously inclined 4th movement), Rachmaninov's cello sonata, etc. Her influence, however, I'm sure was very heavy indeed inspiring the "young ones" on to wonderful performances. They do give some wonderful performances. When she does join in (as in the Brahms' two piano version of the Haydn variations) the sparks DO fly--she and Gabriela Montero (sp?)do a splendid Rachmaninov Suite for two pianos #2! One hears the fact that one is listening to a "master Pianist" from the very start of the piece that she is playing in--wow! Mischa Maisky also lends his talents in the wonderful Rachmaninov's cello sonata.

I enjoyed this recording of this Lugano festival very much; I felt that I was experiencing the festivities myself--wonderful music performed by great talents, I, in future intend to purchase more recordings of Martha Argerich's Lugano festival. It's delightful in every way. By the way, EMI's sound is superb!

5 out of 5 stars Stars and some lesser lights (for now) shining.......2006-12-15

'Martha Argerich and Friends Live from the Lugano Festival 2005: Chamber Music' is bound to collect awards when the Grammies come out. This 3 CD set of a live concert is a filled with joy, impassioned playing, variation in repertoire and exuberant music making as any set on the market.

Martha Argerich holds the throne here but as is her manner she shares the stage with such gifted young artists as Polina Leschenko, Piotr Anderszewski, Gabriela Montero, Mark Dobrinsky, Mischa Maisky, Lilya Zilberstein, Gautier and Renaud Capuçon, Lida Chen and Nicholas Angelich. The repertoire is wonderfully varied and includes fine works by Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Brahms, Carlos Guastavino, Manuel Infante, Mendelssohn and Mozart. The artists obviously share not only some behind the scenes training (!) but they all seem to enjoy the act of music making with like minds/friends.

One of the many marks on music that Martha Argerich will leave is her boundless enthusiasm for concerts such as this. With her appearances on the solo stage and in concerti diminishing due to health, it is particularly fortunate for us that she continues to engage in the magic of live recordings, especially when they glow with the light that this one does. This set is a tremendous bargain. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 06

EMI has made a small business out of live recordings by Martha Argerich, and one of the most congenial aspects is the box sets from the Lugano Festival where Argerich is the star draw. She is at her most relaxed in this setting, as one can hear from the Rachmaninov Suite #2, which is vigorous and declamatory but nowhere close to her brutal studio recording. The Amazon reviewer has listed what one can expect from this 2005 installment, sold at bargain price but full of treasures. For me the revelation was Mendelssohn's Piano Trio #2, which bids fair to be considered an overlooked masterpiece. One should also note the extremely attractive Three Argentine Romances by Carlos Gustavino, spectauclarly played by Argerich with vibrant rhtyhms and exotic atmosphere.

My only disappointment is that Argerich doesn't appear in this work or in the set's other masterpiece, the Brahms F minor Piano Quintet. However, the other pianists are wonderful in their own right--Nicholas Angelich in the Mendelsson and Lilya Zilberstein in the Brahms. One is grateful for them, given that Argerich--rahter neurotically, I think--has a quirk of restricting herself very often to two-piano music. The Rachmaninov is welcome, but for those of us who aren't fans of four-hand music, the arrangements of the Mozart K. 545 sonata and Brahms Haydn Variations feel like too much of a good thing. Even so, this is a highly recommended bargain for chamber music lovers.

White-hot regional Mexican artist Mariano Barba offers an unusually savvy blend of appeal to a diverse array of fans. He dresses the part of a classic vaquero (cowboy hat, jeans) but has the coverboy looks and physique that appeal to young fans. On Aliado del Tiempo, his music offers an equal dose of duality. Its modern delivery and flourishes will excite new fans, but it's traditional enough to appeal to their mothers, fathers, and grandfathers. It's the first time in a long time that regional music has been this exciting. The title track is a prime example, its lulling groove spiced up by an emotive delivery of the heartfelt lyrics. "Es Virgen tu Corazon" is another winning moment. It all sets a high bar--and much anticipation--for what this young buck will do next. --Joey Guerra

3 out of 5 stars Fine CD ,Lame DVD.......2007-01-28

I thought the sound quality on the cd was fine. But if you're buying this for the Concerto on the DVD you should know that half the time you won't be seeing the concerto. Yes, while the musicians play you will frequently be shown statues, fountains, gardens and other pretty images that have nothing to do with the music and take up way too much time on screen. That kind of thing might fine on a tourism video which you might or might not watch once, but watching the concerto performance would have been far more interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Great playing but recording is a bit weak.......2006-08-18

The Rodrigo Collection is a compilation of Rodrigo guitar concerti recordings from 1975 to 1979. The guitar playing is robust, aggressive and macho, but not nearly as sensitive and deep as efforts by Pepe and Angel during the last decade. Twenty some years of practice and performing makes a big difference!

Although the recording quality is decent, it is not nearly as full bodied as modern digital recordings by the Romero brothers. The midrange is thin and slightly bright and stereo imaging flat. It's not a great digitalization and remix of an analog recording. Lastly, the "Shadows and Light DVD" transfer from analog tape to DVD is terrible. If I didn't know I had put a DVD in the player I'd swear it was an old low rez video tape. Despite these warts, it's a must have for any diehard Rodrigo or Romero fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Rodrigo Collection.......2005-10-19

Here is a delightful combination CD and DVD with some of Rodrigo's most famous and lovely music. The DVD is especially touching and I got a new perspective on this unique composer and his music.

      5 out of 5 stars Great multimedia.......2005-09-13

The first CD is very good, the sound of the concerts is great, but the DVD is another thing, it's great to see Pepe Romero in the Aranjuez Concert and the documentary about the late great master Joaquín Rodrigo touch me very deeply.
My only regret it's that you can only hear the Aranjuez Concert if you play the DVD and not in a CD player (car for example)

Timba is the supercharged successor to salsa, and this Miami-based, Grammy-nominated group is one of hottest exponents of this still-evolving genre. Led by keyboardist/arranger Jorge Gomez, a graduate of Cuba's famed Escuela Nacional de Arte, and vocalist Joaquin (El Kid) Diaz , this unit lights it up with a fiery, Earth, Wind and Fire-style horn section, rap-friendly vocals, and killer Afro-Cuban percussion. Aside from a spirited update of the Aldalberto Alvarez classic cha cha cha, "A Bayamo en Coche," the selections are original compositions with a dancing agenda, including the title track, the infectious descarga "Manos Pa'rriba," and the Weather Report-like sound of "Ven a Bailar." All told, this disc is an excellent follow-up to their 2005 effort, Arroz Con Mango. With larger recording budgets and even more expansive musical vistas, who knows how far this band will go. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

I really liked the first cd but this one seems to somewhat repeat the first. I'm really a timba fan and expected this new cd to experiment with different sounds and it just did not. I hope the next cd moves towards good timba music like Klimax, or Charanga.

Este disco se destaca por ritmos agresivos, montunos medio locos, y una musicalidad de alta clase. Todos los musicos tocan bien. Este es definitivamente para fiestas, baile, y los que les guste la musica latina agresiva.

Cuba's timba musicians create a hard-edged dance music filled with energy, drawing upon jazz, funk, European classical, reggae, and myriad traditional Cuban rhythms. The music has a more global flair to it than some of the older styles, but timba is still wholly Cuban. Starting out as a Miami-based group of Cuban expatriate musician who played in other bands (Albita, Arturo Sandoval, NG La Banda and others), Tiempo Libre got serious when it was offered a slot opening for the legendary Celia Cruz and hasn't looked back since. The septet gets a surprisingly big sound driven by the traditional twin engines of sizzling brass and unrelenting rhythms. Most of the tunes on this too-short 40-minute debut are originals that offer the musicians' own take on their new home fused with the music they love. Indeed, while so many other Cuban exports are looking to the past, here's a band that's proudly in the here and now. --Tad Hendrickson

This is THE HOTTEST Cuban group to come to us in 40 years. Their energy and musicianship excells anything else out there today. This music will move you.

5 out of 5 stars Great album, but kind of short.......2006-02-27

      3 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2006-02-18

Finally a US Timba band capable to groove like those in Havana. I grew up dancing Timba in Cuba and this band makes me feel like if I was there all over again. Once you get Timba in your system every other rhythm takes a second place.
A LATIN GRAMMY nomination for this band speaks for itself.

don't know that much about Cuban music - just know I've loved Buena Vista Social club since that album came out. I never believed anything could top that. But now that I've listened to ths album by these young Miami-based Cubans, I've fallen in love with Cuban music all over again. A perfect album to perk you up on even the bluest of days. These guys have a pipleline into some pure sense of musical joy that most musicians just dream of.
