Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

Because of this album, I have become a compulsive Neil Young freak. This is the CD that made me compulsive about the guy (and anyone he worked with). Buy it. NOW.

I have always liked Neil Young, but this album puts him in an entirely new light for me. I used to think of him as a subpar Dylan -- nice tunes, distinctive homey voice, not as prolific. All of that changed with Massey Hall's release. It is mesmerizing. The sound quality is truly audiophile -- how did they DO that? The album is so good it forced me to study Neil and his art in depth.

Having studied his work now, I'd now put Neil Young on par with Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison as a singer-songwriter. Most would disagree with me, but I would now put him even above Bob Dylan, for the simple reason that Neil Young has never lost a step in 40 years. Even the "dark years" produced wonderful albums. The songs here are simply stunning. They will literally bring tears to your eyes.

The DVD is worth having because it has a few interesting interviews -- especially the one with the "Old Man."

Here's the skinny on the DVD: The extra features, such as a clip from Neil performing 2 songs on "the Johnny Cash show" and the footage of Neil on his ranch with the hired hand that inspired the song "Old Man", are pretty cool. But I began to notice subtle differnces in the audio and the video (very subtle - but they're there). Then it hit me: The video is NOT the same performance as the audio track. That's why there is no video footage of the portions where Neil is speaking to the audience and on quite a few of the songs as well. The video of this Massey Hall show doesn't exist.
This is what I would expect from a bootleg. Why Neil Young feels the need to market a con such as these (see the reviews on the Filmore East show) is beyond me. But I still love him...

5 out of 5 stars CD GREAT-DVD, FORGET IT.......2007-06-18

Short, sweet and to the point. The concert at Massey Hall is a Neil Young acoustical classic. A lot of songs that were new at the time and have since become classics along with a few old favorites.

Unless you just have to have everything by Neil Young, just get the CD - you can live without the DVD. Out of 68 minutes, a repeat of the CD, you get - if you're lucky, maybe 20 minutes of poorly photographed concert footage. And what's the remainder? If you're stoned and really get your jollies in watching a film of tape recorder taping the concert, you'll truly enjoy the DVD. Yep, that's the bulk of the DVD - a tape recorder recording the concert with Neil singing in the background. And from the looks of the surroundings, the tape recorder isn't even at Massey Hall, but probably somewhere else.

A truly great CD which belongs in the collection of every Neil Young fan. You can live without the DVD and not miss a thing. Take the money you'll save by purchasing just the CD sans DVD and buy another Neil Young album.

I bought the CD/DVD combination, because I was interested in seeing the concert. Unfortunately, the video quality is spotty and for some of the songs there is no video at all, just a view of some instruments.

The audio quality is fine, and Neil sounds so young! It's a joy to listen to...Enjoy.

Ok, so maybe the DVD isn't a complete reject. The footage of Neil at his ranch and that of the "Old Man" is just fabulous. Also, Neil on stage in that wonderful flannel shirt is precious. That being said, I can only watch a reel to reel tape recorder spinning around for just so long. Talk about space filling!
The CD part of this duo, however, is some of the finest early Neil available. I have a ton of bootleg LPs and nothing comes close to this. The sound quality and play list is outstanding. It's a real gem. Too bad that the packaging is so poor. The cheap cardboard sleeve will no doubt scratch the discs. Inside is a fragment of a newspaper review of the concert (man, I wish I had a time machine!) which the designers of this
CD/DVD package felt we would not be interest in reading. That's a shame.

Whether you are a Neil Young fan or not, this is a 'must hear' live recording for anyone who loves great folk music! The lyrics and melodies are both pensive and mirthful, taking you back to a simpler time when life and love was easier to contemplate. Neil's trademark stiletto-falsetto-like voice was beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

This is probably one of the most honest and true live recordings in my collection; just Neil with guitar and piano. The performance is top notch, and the sound just soars; perfect blend! Some real highlights are the piano performance of "Heart of Gold", the soft and mysterious "Old Man" and of course, the first two tracks, which reach back to where Neil came from with Buffalo Springfield, and where he "currently" was during the After The Goldrush album. The album is a great bridge between the electric Neil and the Harvest sound he'd record later in the year.

Lil Wayne Is in my opinion, the king of mixtapes right now. He is avereging about 1 mixtape every three months. This Mixtape is Awesome. Alot of his other mixtapes have people from his record label, and you only get to hear Weezy on one of the verses. However, on this mixtape he does it mainly by himself. This is more like a full cd or two. Great punchlines, I had to rewind a couple of times because I was dumb founded. Definitely worth the buy. Cant wait for his next mixtape!

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu........ Have I written this before?????????.......2007-06-04

O.K. So I embedded myself into the photo on the cover. O.K. So I got Chance (an indian guide in a former life) to help me find out where I was at. And, to my surprise, it was 1870 and I was in a hilly area of Wyoming. Wy, you may ask? But, in a larger sense, that is the very question we should ask C,S,N & Y. If we all have lived before -then wy? For mere monetary compensation your knowledgable Seer will answer you. If not, you have to suffer through this review. :)
I liken this group to a band of ex-patriot renegades (see cover) who, for whatever what reason, saw fit to escape former situations to create a new creative band. How or why they got together is anyone's guess. But it works in a more than substantial way and the vocals and music are more than a snug fit like pieces of a puzzle.
The songs here have a tendency to embed themselves into self-serving memory for some reason. Perhaps it's the artists; perhaps it's the songs, perhaps it's the harmonies, perhaps it's the production. Then again, maybe, perhaps it's everything.
Even in the slower and more somber tunes, there is something here that awakens you - leads you on to some type of discovery. Whether it be inner or outer is your own choice. But realization of yourself and your world is a never ending process. Maybe we would all be better in Wyoming at a simpler, less complicated time. But, here we are. And we have no choice except to learn and evolve - or else, in the next life, this one will be the Deja Vu.
We begin with "Carry On" which borrows lyrics from Still's "Questions" that was on the last Buffalo Springfield album. On this he expands into a galloped beat with pronounced ensemble singing. Also a change in tempo. In a sense, the message is pronounced (as later in the Joni Mitchell song "Woodstock") that life is for learning. A call to carry on and learn.
The seemingly simple country slide guitar ode of Nash's "Teach Your Children" carries with it the underlying motif of understanding by shifting your perspective. In this case, older and younger generations. It's easy to discount others in which there is no reward. Better yet to take the effort to truly "see". The blessings are well worth the chance.
Crosby's "Almost Cut My Hair" with it's lazy walk riff poses questions within the self. Justifying inner decisions as opposed to whatever out there wants to decide for you. An amazing stream-of-conciousness tune. Or maybe drugs. With Crosby it's always a flip of the coin. What is next is one of the most glorious tunes on the album. "Helpless" conveys the awe and magnitude of the Canadian countryside that Neil knows. Nature in itself is a force beyond human comprhension or control, and in this we are all helpless.
"Woodstock" rocks righteously. And it is a call of a generation. It is also a song of moving forward with a clensing. We have all fallen- but we are golden and have to get ourselves back to the garden. Again- a moving on.
"Deja Vu", with Crosby's outerworldly guitar chords and ethereal meters beckon further examination of the world. "Do you know? Don't you wonder". The construction on this song never ceases to amaze your favorite Seer. Maybe I could have written this in a former life. O.K. - I won't go there.
"Our House" is Nash's ode to domestic bliss. Nothing exceptional but oh so addictive. That tune is just so incredibly pleasant. This must be what the afterworld is like! "4 + 20" finds Still's still aching about a lost love. Simple but effective acoustic guitar on this. Still, the dismay and depression of heartache is one of the most deeply confessional tunes I've heard. The ways of the world are sometimes wicked and cruel. Sometimes we create those ways.
Again, Neil Young shines bright with the trilogy of "Country Girl". Amazing, lush, and inventive changes in structure. This could not have been an easy tune to pull off. But, with musicians this talented anything is possible. "Too late to keep the change, too late to pay". Neil always throws these dilemmas in his tunes (see my review on "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere). Neil is consummate conveyor of enigmas within the soul. His own as well as others. Brilliant.
"Everybody I Love You" closes out this rock classic. A call to open up and let love through - even to one's self. Your "heart is an anchor" and "you expect for me to love you when you hate yourself my friend". With C,S,N & Y somehow, underneath it all, is a call to freedom and movement towards the dawn- the dawn of realization.
Well - that's it. I made you suffer through another review. Did you like it or did you need novacaine? I'm leaving Wyoming now. Being pelted with pinecones is not Metamorpho's cup of tea. No.
If you like wonderous harmonies, creative effort, and a classic from a magical bygone age - this is definitely a treat and essential to any rock collection.

5 out of 5 stars Shows What We've Lost and What They've Lost.......2007-04-26

When I listen to Deja Vu these days, I'm surprisingly not reminded of the hippie movement or drug-induced paranoia or political activism, although you could say CSN and sometimes Y have really become posterchildren for this tumultous time in our history. Instead, I'm still swept away by the aural beauty of the jangling acoustic guitars, the richness of the songs, the perfect harmonies, the passionate performances. I'm still mesmerized by Stills' tasty guitar licks which run through "Carry On" and "Deju Vu" and the emotional choke in his voice on 4 + 20's final verse. I love Jerry Garcia's pedal steel guitar that cries all the way through Nash's "Teach Your Children" and the experience listening to "Almost Cut My Hair," which sounds as if the band is playing in your living room with their amps cranked. I still get an adrenalin rush when I hear Stills belting out "Woodstock," which for me is one of the most powerful vocal performances in all of rock. And I like the eccentric Young's slow-as-molasses but elegant "Helpless." It reminds me of a time when music was not meant to be background noise, or to be listened to while you read or studied, or walked between classes at the university. It was a time when you put the LP on your turntable and sprawled in a comfortable chair or sat on the floor and let the music take you completely away. Or maybe you got together with friends and sat around just listening to new releases like Deja Vu, reading every word in the liner notes on the jacket. This is what I think we've lost.

Deja Vu also shows what CSN (and sometimes Y) ultimately have lost. Sadly, after this pinnacle of achievement, except for occasional flourishes of good songwriting and performance, Crosby, Stills, & Nash would rarely recapture the beauty of this album or its predecessor. The exception has of course been Young, who somehow has managed to keep it all together through the years. And except for Stills' magnificent opus, Manassas (1), and C&N's Wind On the Water, I realize just how much drug addiction and delusions of grandeur have drained the talent from these once brilliant artists. Fortunately, we still have the time capsules created by Buffalo Springfield, CSN, Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, The Stones, and The Beatles to transport us back to the musical renaissance of 1967--1972.

Back when I was in high school, Deja Vu was one of the most popular albums with kids who were of a counter-culture bent. But it was also an album, due to the presence of the Graham Nash contributions Our House and Teach Your Children, that kids could play loudly at home without parents shouting at them to "turn that g#*d*#* noise down!". While the band's eponymous debut (sans Neil Young) brought them fame and fortune, it was Deja Vu that had such broad appeal that it became the musical portrait of a generation.
Admittedly, my vinyl copy of Deja Vu had been gathering dust for years as I have so much other music I had nearly forgotten CSNY. But recently, I saw this on sale at a bargain price in Costco and snapped it up after remembering how much I used to enjoy it as a kid. Well, I tell you, one listen brings the old days back to life. The industry reviewer says that songs like Almost Cut My Hair are dated, but I say they still sound as good today as when I first heard them.
Though the entire album is highly enjoyable, my favorites are: the stirring Carry On, the country-rock Teach Your Children, the anthemic Almost Cut My Hair, the evocative Our House, the plaintive 4 + 20, and the glorious Country Girl. Everytime I put this on, visions of old times and places flash though my mind.
Note that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some other organization have chosen Deja Vu as one of 200 albums that should be in everyone's collection. I've seen that list and my stomach churns as I read it. But I was pleased to note that the compilers got roughly one out of ten right and this album is definitely one of those few. Obviously, if you are checking this CD out on the listings here you must have some familiarity with it. So if you have not gotten this remastered version of Deja Vu yet, the time to do so is now. You'll never be sorry you did.

Adrienne Young has the banjo skills to make a bluegrass disc with the best of them. But on her third album, she largely trades in the string-band sound that characterized her previous efforts for a more straightforward folk-pop approach. As the lead track proclaims, this is "All for Good," and Room to Grow turns out to be a confidently self-produced work of both personal and artistic maturity. On first listen, Young's opener might seem to be a page out of Candide, with its refrain "all that is here is for good." But the song's lyric "struggle is perfect" is a clue to Young's larger themes. Besides that of nature, most purely celebrated here by "River and a Dirt Road," the album gives an inescapable feeling, not exactly of hope or optimism, but of sweet surrender: surrender not to defeat but to the idea of fully living one's life by "relinquishing control," as Young sings in "Giving Up the Fight," and concentrating on the here and now. "All this worryin' about what's to come/Don't amount to nothin' when it's said and done," says Young in "In Between the Heartbeats," and "It's a flyin' leap from birth to death/Gotta treat each moment like a special guest." And though "we all outgrow the skin we're in," as she sings on the title track--along with "All for Good," the high point of a record that should bring Young the acclaim she richly deserves--"we can weave, we can mend/Stitch by stitch, row by row/Making sure there's room enough to grow." One does wish she and her cowriters (longtime collaborator Will Kimbrough and Mark D. Sanders--who penned, among other country #1s, Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance") had included two more originals in favor of otherwise admirable Joni Mitchell and Dusty Owens covers, as they are obviously self-sufficient. But that doesn't diminish the force of this resounding, album-length carpe diem. --Benjamin Lukoff

On June 14, 2007 two of us caught her show at Longwood Gardens in PA. All I can say is this was a treat for the ears and down right FUN. I loved everything she played and you could she that she really enjoyed what she is doing. You could feel her spirit in every song! She got so into it that after about 55 solid minutes of song she was surprised to learn that she was running out of time. All of the artist were GREAT! This was my fist exposure to Bluegrass and it won't be my last. Adrienne all we can say is YOU GO GIRL...you ROCK!

I like this CD. Nearly all the songs on it are really strong lyrically compared to the other 2 albums. Musically though this is not as unique as the others. I'd like to see her do another album on the other end of the spectrum. Less commerical sounding with more old timey.

I had never heard of her prior to attending the Appel Farm Art & Music Festival on June 2, 2007. She was one of the performers at the festival. I immediately took a liking to her music. I purchased this CD at the festival and have listened to it countless times without getting tired of it. Their isn't a song on the CD I don't enjoy listening to over and over again. She puts much feeling into her music. The added plus is to see a musician with a social conscious, unlike some of the canned music coming out the music industry these days, with her Save A Seed Fund. Looking forward to seeing her play next week at Longwood Gardens!

While Room To Grow has much in common with Adrienne Young's earlier CDs, is a much more polished and mature effort than its predecessors. This is clearly the work of a more seasoned professional, somebody who's serious about what she's doing, somebody who's ready to play in the big leagues. The whole project, the songwriting, the performances, and the production, absolutely shine.

These songs carry the positive messages Adrienne's fans would expect, but they're tempered by an understanding that the world can and often does crush our best efforts. This acknowledgement of the struggle between good & bad, light & dark, runs throughout the album, but nowhere is that duality presented better than in the opening track, "All For Good." Where the previous CD opened with the rollicking and anthemic declaration, "Gonna start a revolution, made of action not of words," this one begins with sparse instrumentation, an almost autumnal melody, and world-weary resignation: "It's just one more day out of my life gone for good... I keep turning over in my mind, did I get it right?" It's the self-doubt of the traveler who has devoted enormous energies to making a positive impact during life's pilgrimage, but inevitably must confront the possibility that it wasn't enough, or worse still that it's all been for naught. But then out of the darkness comes a beam of light, a joyous and hopeful chorus made all the more beautiful by the contrast, justifying the effort and resolve required to forge on. The realization that "all that is here is for good" makes for an even more powerful anthem than the one that opened the last record.

Even the up-tempo, happy numbers, like the title track, are made more potent by at least a passing nod (or is it a wink?) to life's downside. Extolling the virtues of those pastures where there's "room enough to grow" implies an understanding of less enjoyable places and ways of life. Like the places that inspired "What I Wouldn't Give For a River," an aching expression of yearning for the solitude of a quieter and simpler way of life that is among Adrienne's best songwriting efforts. "Natural Bridge," the track that's racked up the most plays on my iTunes, could be the result of having finally gotten a taste of that simpler life where "my soul will dance again with my true love and all my kin." It also features some lovely dobro work from Andy Hall. The amazing Will Kimbrough, Mike Gordon from Phish, and one of my favorite bluegrass singers, Dale Ann Bradley, also make marvelous contributions to this CD. Former members of Adrienne's band (including fiddler Eric Merrill, bassist Kyle Kegerreis, and guitarist Hans Holzen) lend their considerable talents as well, and I would be remiss not to mention the wonderful work of guitarist Edward O'Day who is definately someone from whom we should expect big things.

Initially I questioned the decision to cover Joni Mitchell's "Free Man In Paris." Amazingly, it fits very comfortably smack dab in the middle of Adrienne's songs. If her originals weren't so good, Joni's tune would stick out like a sore thumb, but as it is, "Free Man" is just another great song among many and is a spirited, first-rate performance by both vocalist and band. Plus it nicely echoes the sentiments of the opening track: "you just can't win," but you do your best just the same.

"Plow to the End of the Row" and "The Art of Virtue," both of which I love, serve as the great foundation upon which "Room to Grow" and whatever may follow will stand. This is something more than what we've heard from Adrienne in the past, and something greater and more powerful than we could have expected. Here's hoping it's just one more step down a long and fruitful path.

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. --Steven Stolder

This recording is distorted and it sounds as if he is singing with helium. Even the newer tracks sound as if they were recorded analog with outdated equipment. Many people are not aware that Mr. Young recorded back in 1966 under the name Napoleon XIV. And yet not one those hits appear here!

Although this is a nice collection of songs by CSNY's whiny singer, it's obvious that Young has never been able to write new songs as good as he could from 1970-1972. It makes you think he should have retired after his first few albums, doesn't it?

A word to the wise, if you're looking for "Horse With No Name," keep on looking, because it's not included in this set.

Actually, I'd give this CD four and a half stars. The only thing that prevents a five-star review is that any greatest hits of someone as important as Neil Young needs to have 2 CDs to cover all the material the man has produced over the years. Sound quality excellent, and the versions are full-length, as much as ten minutes in the case of 'Cowgirl in the Sand'. Neil Young was one of the seminal singer/songwriters of the sixties and early seventies, and his works capture the era of protest and baby-boomers coming of age. The song selection is good for a single CD. As someone who has most of Young's work on vinyl, I realize that this retrospective is only about half what deserves to be included, but it is a good start, and highly recommended.

While this is an excellent collection of some of Young's best work, it is not really a greatest hits collection. While it includes his biggest hits(Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart), it omits some of his other hits and includes songs that were never even released as singles. I am a bit surprised that they included both "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Southern Man" on a single CD, since they are very similar musically. Of the two I always liked "Cowgirl" better, "Southern Man" is cliché ridden and perpetuates anti-southern stereotypes. All-in-all this is a solid collection for the casual Young fan.

Proclaiming his intentions with "Are You Ready for the Country?" Young detoured briefly to the Nashville mainstream. On this No. 1 1972 album, even the singer's acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful--the smash "Heart of Gold," with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt's backup vocals, is by far Young's most commercial-sounding song. His usual dissonant touches, like the otherworldly guitar in "Out on the Weekend," are less spooky in this new context. The last two tracks, the deceptively gentle "The Needle and the Damage Done" and the hypnotic rocker "Words (Between the Lines of Age)," predict "Tonight's the Night," Young's haunted 1975 classic. --Steve Knopper

Neil Young's unique folk-esque music with his own distinct voice, has been enjoyed by many.
This 1972 album is probabely his best.
Starting with the laidback Out On The Weekend and going on to the title track labum, and the melancholy wailing of A Man Needs A Maid.
Then possibly his best known song of loneliness and heartache- Heart of Gold.
Then there is the contemplative song of youth and age - Old Man.
Neil Diamond was another classic of the forever memorable 70's and anybody who loves folk will want this in their collection.

This album was released when I was 10 years old. I remember listening to it when my older brother first purchased it. I almost forgot it even existed until I recalled it after listening to CSN&Y Deja VU. All 10 tracks are incredible. It's truly a great recording. My 14 year old daughter even recognized some of the tracks on this album which was released 35 years ago. It's nice to jam to music that has words you can understand and have meaning. When my brother learned that I had purchased the CD he imediately took credit for "teaching me well" on quality classic music.

5 out of 5 stars NEIL YOUNG'S TIMELESS AUTUMN CLASSIC !.......2007-04-11

Originally released in 1972, Neil Young's Harvest includes his only number one hit single, Heart of Gold, together with nine other songs, including some that are the best of his forty year career. This is the album that Neil himself said was his best. It is a varied album, that explores many levels of the human experience, including loneliness, isolation, grief, madness, love, and acceptance. Contradictions are everywhere in these songs, including the first, Out on the Weekend. Young sings of the lonely boy who can't relate to joy, but also about the "woman so fine" who loves him. This song, like most on this album, includes acoustic guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel guitar. In the next song, Harvest, Young sings, "Will I see you give more than I can take?, Will I only harvest some?", as if he will not allow himself to completely let go and fall in love. Continuing this theme of isolation, A Man Needs A Maid starts with "My life is changing in so many ways, I don't know who to trust anymore". With it's haunting melody, the London Symphony Orchestra accompaniment, and Young's fragile voice, the song allows you to empathize with it's character's uncertainty. Next is Heart of Gold, where the loner sings of looking for true love, but feels he is running out of time. With James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt providing the backing vocals, Ben Keith playing beautiful pedal steel guitar phrases, and Young on acoustic guitar and harmonica, singing of traveling and being a miner for a heart of gold, the song works perfectly to conjure up the image of a decent man searching the world over for a decent woman to love. Old Man is a song Neil wrote about the 70-year-old cattleman ranch hand who lived at his ranch. It is another song in which Young portrays a loner, and is probably Neil's most popular song ever. There's A World is a symphony (with the LSO) where hope and acceptance are the prevalent themes. With lyrics like "All God's children", "Never worry", and "Could be good things in the air for you", it's an uplifting song. In Alabama, Young calls the state out on Jim Crow laws and racist attitudes. Recorded in a barn at his ranch with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums, Young brought in Stephen Stills and David Crosby to sing the backing vocals. The rock song sounds great and also makes it's point clear. Needle and the Damage Done was recorded live at a California University with just Neil and an acoustic guitar. Written about band member Danny Whitten (who later died from a drug overdose), the song is both poignant and haunting. Words (Between the Lines of Age) closes the album (and also gets points for the great title). This was also recorded in Young's barn with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums. It features Dylan influenced lyrics, and a long guitar solo (Neil plays great guitar solos). Harvest is an album that's best listened to in the Fall of the year. With it's folk-country sounds, reflective themes, and even it's autumnal album cover and title, it blends well with the mood of the season. Harvest is a timeless autumn classic that you will enjoy year after year.

The sound quality on this CD is poor by early 90's standards. How did 'Reactor' and 'Hawks and Doves' rate re-mastering priority over this? RE-MASTER THIS CD....PLEASE!

Neil Young-After The Gold Rush *****

Neil Young released his seceond classic solo album in 1970. This time he elected to go it without the help of the grea Crazy Horse. Though he did use every member of the band at one point or another during the recording of After The Goldrush this was largley a solo album. A much softer and lighter album then it's predicesor Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and actually accesable compared to the debut selftitled album. After The Goldrush is a much more personal album with more hearfelt lyrics and a far less dry recording then that of his previous albums.

By this time Neil Young had already made a large name for himself working with the legendary Buffalow Springfield, the success of Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere, and he was beginning to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so it was only logical that this album be a massive success.

Songs like 'Tell Me Why' and the hit 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'I Believe In You' are very personal songs that have to be heard to appreciate and when heard one can since and feel the longing in Youngs voice for love. The cover of the country classic 'Oh, Lonesome Me' really sums up the entire feel of this album and Neil mood at the time, he was in a very low place and was longing for companionship of some kind. While tracks like the short 'Till The Morning Comes' and the equally as short 'Cripple Creek Ferry' seem up beat and peppy they are the shortest moments on the album and by the far the only half way forgetable ones on this classic. 'Southern Man' is a classic and it was destend to become so the moment it was recorded. Establishing Neil Young as a certified first rate guitar slinger, and the Godfather of grunge all at the same time. 'Southern Man' is one of if not the single most contraversial songs Young ever recorded causing a rivalry between him and the southern rock band from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track on the album 'After The Gold Rush' is another Young classic and one of his all time best songs. It is a song about the renissance, the 1970's, and the future and how the world is changing and not changing and what we could be doing to fix things but are not doing. It is a calssic song that is for sure. 'When You Dance You Can Really Love' is one song that has always be given a bad rap and for what I do not understand the song is wonderful and one that I personally get lost in everytime I hear it. 'Birds' is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs Neil Young or anyone has ever written and it is heart wrenching to listen to. You relaly must hear to understand what I mean. 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is possibly the best song Young ever recorded. The melody line and the vocal layering is wonderful. The lyrics are spectacular, quite simply amazing. Do sit and write in a little review how amazing 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is, is just frankly impossible. Just listen is all that can be said.

After The Gold Rush has gone down in history and one of the all time greatest rock n' roll albums ever. Many best of, critics, and music fans alike. After The Gold Rush is an album all Neil Young fans and all rock n' roll fans around the world should own. It's an album of songwriting, and much more tendor then most of the other albums in Youngs cannon, Highly recomended.

While this is not one of my favorite Neil Young albums, it is a solid effort. It was a top ten hit on the US album charts and produced his first solo top 40 hit "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the minor follow-up hit "When You Dance You Can Really Love". It includes probably his most overrated song, the cliché ridden "Southern Man", which is really just a remake of his excellent "Cowgirl in the Sand". It was popular primarily because it helped perpetuate anti-southern and anti-Christian stereotypes (the only two groups that it is still politically correct to stereotype). "Tell Me Why" is a very good song as is "After The Gold Rush", though Young's vocal limitations are very apparent on this song as he struggles to hit the notes. "Till The Morning Comes" is good but sounds like a song that he started but could never finish. All-in-all, a good album but not a great one.

The icon Neil Young solidified himself in the early to mid 70's and the funny thing is that he remains true to this album to this day despite all the semi forays into synthesized madness,noise,albums cut with Pearl Jam, and the styles of the day.
The simplicity of this album as well as his prior 2, the few that followed are all 5 stars,it's laid back intimate sparse texture that fuses bittersweet tinged country ruminations with the great garage rock of Crazy horse was his formula and Neil's ongoing trademark of endurance.
Nobody does it better, none of his musical children.
I happily was front row in New York on his "Greendale" tour, saw that great"Rust Never Sleeps" tour,and followed and listen to him from the "Deja Vu" days onward and all you youngsters are best to start with these and should listen to Buffalo Springfield with his old buddy Steve Stills to see the development of this musician and the status he achieved with CSN&Y and beyond.

For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. --Mike McGonigal

I don't care how many times I've blasted "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" and "Down By The River" from this CD and thoroughly enjoyed them or how it's such a great look into a critical period of so many critical periods of such an amazing aritist...it's either over priced or more profoundly too lacking in sheer length. As a Neil fan I had to get it but it's hard not to feel slightly ripped off. Makes me skeptical about buying further such releases.

I also have the 2-10-70 bootleg and feel that a comparison is in order to appreciate this Fillmore show. Neil's very intimate with the crowd at the Cincinatti show, but frustrated at times, even asking two people to be quiet so he can "get into it" for the rest of the audience. Then, at the beginning of the electric set Neil complains about a shock that he's getting from the equipment, and in the middle of "Down by the River" (18 minutes long!) he clearly says "I quit" during the chorus. So, that show is not going to be one of his favorites even if the music is amazing. It is a shame that this Fillmore release is missing the acoustic set and the ubiquitous "Cinnamon Girl" closer, which I heard was not as well preserved. However, what is here is the best sounding live Neil you have ever heard! It's not just the quality of the recording, either, which is rich, but the band itself. Let's take the "River" as our vehicle of comparison. Neil's voice has more inflection, his solos are more varied and aggressive, and despite being 12 minutes long it is a superior version. Also, instead of "It Might Have Been" from Cincinatti we get "Cowgirl" which blows the studio version away. Obviously, Neil felt better at the Fillmore show, so don't question the Master and treat yourself.

If you want a piece of Neil Young and Crazy Horse History, this is the ticket. Sure it might not be the whole concert and it is short compared to most CDs today, but I'll take quality over quanity anyday! The sound quality is fantastic!

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are brilliant. It is a live version of " Everybody Knows this is Knowhere" The version of "Winterlong" is superb" There is little crowd noise. I would have enjoyed more tracks on the CD. All in all well worth the purchase price

Amzing this collection is. A must have along with Live at Massey Hall. Neil sounds like you remember especially if you saw him with Crazy Horse at the late Bill Graham's Fillmore East a favorite with the hippies in New Yorks Greenwich Village in the late sixties time of flower and beads! . A young Neil Young voice, rather than the mature version that comes with age and mileage. An incredible collection of well produced and well performed live tracks that can only bring you back to thw Woodstock era. Well worth the listen!
