Tiësto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiësto remains without equal. After Just Be, I didn't have too high expectations of this album, even though I did like Just Be. This album doesn't have slow tracks, the vocal performances are just great. All songs fit his style and a couple of them may remind you his first hits.

One of the best Tiesto CD's I've had the pleasure of owning. It has been playing on repeat for a week now and I haven't gotten tired of it. "Sweet Things" is one of my favs on it. The teme from Pirates of the Caribean is awesome too.

Dissapointing coming from Tiesto........2007-07-04

I expected better of Tiesto, but his decline continues with Elements of Life. Some of the tracks (like Sweet Things) were just bad. Terrible vocals, poor sounding in general. Let PVD and AVB take over; they deserve to. They continue to produce quality stuff. Tiesto has just finally began to choke on his ego, and it will be the eventual complete demise of him. Tiesto is more concerned about spreading his name, and doesn't spend enough time in the studio. He has basically forgotten about the music that has famed him. AVB does a weekly radio show and keeps on top of everything Trance. Tiesto keeps on top of himself, and nothing more.

This one is a must have for all tiesto fans. The samples do justice so listen to it before you buy the album. Tiesto likes experimenting like he did with this one. The album starts off with a melodic mix and transitions into more proggy, core tracks. Overall good buy, highly recommended

"Compounds" is a great representation of this label's acts. I especially liked the John Cale numbers,and of course Eno's contribution. Particularly interesting was Vacabou.All in all,a very good collection and a good buy.

A True Bargain.......2006-08-18

I bought "Distance" by Marconi Union and had this CD as part of the package. I couldn't believe that it was only $2.99, and after listening to it, I still don't believe that it was going for that price. This is an excellent array of talent on a sampler CD, worth many times the price, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to find out what All Saints records is all about.

Cheap, Good..........2006-06-21

Some of the highlights on this compilation are the Eno tracks from The Drop, Nerve Net, and The Shutov Assembly. The non-Eno tracks are consistently good as well, particularly Budd's track from The White Arcades. For a sampler, the album has a really good sequence to it. It has a sort of This Mortal Coil effect on you, where every track is unique but it adds up to a consistent whole. Aural Wallpaper indeed.

Essential ambient music, past and present........2006-06-04

This is a fascinating guide to ambient music, past and future. All the major innovators of the genre are present, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Jon Hassell and John Cale demonstrate their own unique talents over an array of classic tracks drawn from the All Saints Records back catalogue. However, this is only part of the story, after an extended period of silence All Saints have recently begun releasing albums by new acts and Compounds showcases tracks by two of their recent discoveries including the highly acclaimed, Marconi Union, who contribute their dazzling track, Sleepless to the album, and effectively map out their vision of future directions for this music, while demonstrating just why they are being seen as important new voices on the European electrionic music scene. Alongside this Spanish duo Vacabou add their beguiling brand of trip-hop to the mix and we are left with the sense that ambient music is alive, well and flourishing in safe hands.

2nd counterpoint.......2007-06-01

I don't write reviews for anything on Amazon, but I am this time to back up what was said in the (at this time) 2 positive reviews and as a counterpoint to the one negative review. One of the positive reviews states you'll either get it or you won't; obviously the reviewer who did not like it does not get it. In his short review he states that this is "light jazz" and goes on to lament his inability to stop time and live in a very small dimension (i'm paraphrasing a bit). While there are tracks that could be played on light jazz stations, the same could be said of some of Miles' or Coltranes' ballads, but that doesn't make them light jazz, just as this is not. It is a shame that Amazon still does not have her 2 2007 releases available. I had to go the Anzic Label website to buy them. You won't be sorry in purchasing her music as she weaves a lot into her playing that -yes, not everyone will get.

She's A Star.......2007-05-13

I have been reading a lot about Ms. Cohen. She seems to have been making some history recently: she is the only female horn player (and the only Israeli) ever to headline at the Village Vanguard. She is the only person ever to get citations in 5 categories in the annual Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll (2007). She is the only woman ever chosen as "Up and coming jazz musician" of the year by the global Jazz Journalists Association...and the only person ever to get the aformentioned nod and win a best instrumentalist category (clarinet in her case). Then...there are feature articles about her in places like the Washington Post. She's playing at the Newport Jazz festival this year. All the foregoing struck me as a lot of smoke...for there not to be any fire. So I bought her three albums as a leader and the Waverly Seven (of which she is a member) album "YO! BOBBY". Now.. I understand the kudos. She is an extraordinary musician. She has a warm, solid tone on all 5 of her instruments. Her improvising is extraordinarily creative yet artfully restrained....as opposed to what I hear from the legions of Brecker, Potter, Coltrane would be clones out there. Her original compositions have something to say. I love her taste in cover tunes. I get it.

a counterbalance.......2007-05-11

To be honest - I haven't heard this whole album - just the lengthy clips on the amazon listening station. But I was curious, having read strong notices in May 2007 in the New York Times - and her stuff is lovely - AND the one-star screed posted by the other reviewer is so far off base that I needed to post a counter-balance to that wrier's one-star notice, which has much more to do with his (?) personal biases than this music. This is fine contemporary jazz with heart, soul, wit, chops and verve.

No Balls.......2007-05-07

This music is what would pass for "jazz" today, better known as "light jazz." I say, it has no "balls." The jazz I know, with roots in bebop, is much more vital, and hardly played today live. I don't see what the fuss is about, if there is any, unless it is the attempt of the record companies to promote a woman. No problem with women jazz players. They are around, but please, record companies, don't just try to promote the person. Wait until the music is ready. And don't call it jazz. Jazz, as such, is kinda dead. The best stuff is reissues.

Perfect.......2007-05-30

Beautiful music, lovely voice, child-friendly and uplifting for both children AND adults. I gave this to my son who is 7 and he put it on his walkman when he went to bed. Half way through he came running out exclaiming; "It's gorrrrrgeous!!! I love it!!!" We also play it in the car and on the way to school and home. I'm a fan of Waldorf philosophy and the gnome and the elements went down great with us.

My 7 year old son was suffering from insomnia. I turned to this self guided meditation but in all truth I didn't hold a lot of hope that it would work for him. It did. This CD is fantastic. My son finds it very calming and it helps him to fall asleep. We used it every night for a month or so and now we use it on occasion if he is having a difficult time falling asleep. It works like a charm. I highly reccommend.

You Can't Miss with Shakti.......2005-01-11

This is the final recording by the original, classic, non-gimmicky Shakti (Remember Shakti being unoriginal, non-classic and gimmicky, IMHO). You absolutely *must* have this if you love adventurous, amazing music. It's more varied than either of their previous two recordings, "Shakti" and "Handful of Beauty" (my favorite, BTW), and has a heavier, rockier edge. "Face to Face" opens with one of John McLaughlin's all-time cool-a** rhythm guitar riffs. Mere mortals still quiver in their boots almost thirty years later...

Unique, sublime voice of fusion........2003-04-12

I do not believe there is a "best" Shakti album. All of them are brilliant and exhilarating and essential like chapters in a book. _Natural Elements_ does, however, stand out as the most lyrical and beautiful of Shakti's albums from the 70s, in my opinion. Shakti is a pluralistic group adapting some Western jazz idioms with an Indian environment, and here they also capture the widest range of moods. John McLaughlin straddles the line dividing Western and Eastern musical traditions, bridging the two with his guitar as his soul burns along the fretboard. Such is evident enough from the get-go, with "Mind Ecology", a fast-paced opener penned by McLaughlin, tearing along the pattering gallop of earthen percussion. But to celebrate their virtuosity as an end in itself would be a dishonor. "Mind Ecology", for all its speed and wild playing, exemplifies the "hidden" allure of Shakti -- the incredible virtuosity of these musicians is just a means to an end. The end of course being the articulation of an thrillingly joyful disposition, infectiously spiritual and focused. "Baby Baby Come Dance With Me" and "Happiness Is Being Together" are merry, vivacious jewels sparkling in the desert sands. The heavenly "Face to Face" and "Bridge of Sighs" slow that Shakti is just as engrossing when softened and calm. "Peace of Mind" is a spare beauty (that is unfortunately short) written by McLaughlin, where Shankar's violin renders a rapturously crying melody over gentle strumming. Definitely one of the most lovely moments in Shakti's discography. "The Daffodil and the Eagle" is exquisite, charged with the clairvoyant interplay that is typical of this group, with lead instruments and percussion entwining magnificently. Hearing them live would be the most prime way to experience the group's sheer acumen and togetherness, but for the diasporal Shakti, _Natural Elements_ is definitely essential. If you've never heard Shakti, this is as good an introduction as any.

With the mastery of John McLaughlin and L. Shankar on violin, it will unleash a wave of a creative, musical, and spiritual energy. All that it embraces is truly a glimpse of the primal power and creativity that can be manifest in this world. This album/CD sets the standard for genre. Few musicians are capable of attaining these heights as John McLaughlin and Shakti have done here.

Pianist Peter Kater has orchestrated a gentle, introspective series of ambient chamber works dedicated to the four elements: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. Each CD is distinctive, with Water living up to its title by being the most free-flowing of them all. Using long, pensive pauses and melodies that elongate over time, the music borders on classical--often echoing classical themes, such as the Satie-like ostinato of "Water Ballet," without overtly lifting from them. Water comes close to the painfully serene sound you might associate with Arvo Pärt. Accompanied just by guitarist Mike Hamilton and reed player Paul McCandless, they explore pensive chamber moods, many of them built around improvisations I suspect Kater pieced together into compositions later. Conceptual albums like this are often as much about marketing as music, but on Water, Kater's compositions genuinely do seem to float in slow tide changes and gentle pools. Peter Kater's classical background (and I presume he has one!) is brought into focus here -- broken chords, hints of classical themes, some of which are Chopinesque while others remind us of Beethoven, cadences and scales. As with the rest of the Elements series, his music has the ability of pulling the listener deep down into himself, regardless of where you listen to it - in the car, in your living room, at work, you name it. Again, not overly sentimental, and just the right amount of ambience. This is music which helps you keep in touch with yourself, in the most spiritually intimate and soulful sense of the phrase.

New Age music should border on classical, be melodic, easy on the ear, but it can be strong. It should allow the listener to concentrate on the music for enjoyment, or blend into the background and become part of the environment, bordering on the edges of silence while filling the spaces between.

It should have good production values, in other words it should not sound like it was recorded in someone's basement. Preferably it should sound like someone put the time, effort and interest into producing quality music for the listeners enjoyment. And it should sound like the composer is putting his best effort into the work.

Peter Kater is one such composer/artist. Nominated for "Best New Age Album" in 2003 and 2004, he is very accomplished at this particular genre.

His newest work is a grouping of four CD's on the elements - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. For this review, I chose Water.

The focus is to present the Element of Water in a series of compositions that would connect the element to the listener. This production is all acoustical, and gives us Peter Kater on the piano, Paul McCandless on oboe and English horn, and Mike Hamilton on guitars.

For an all acoustical production, it is excellent. You can hear the piano strings vibrate as he holds the notes, the guitars resonate and you can feel the depth of the oboe. You are given an environment that touches you personally. Excellent recording and production values.

This is a lovely work, paced slow and purposeful to draw the listener in. There is much piano here to appreciate, and the oboe work is a delightful contrast and compliment to the compositions and the piano.

If you like New Age material, this is a classic example of how it should feel and sound. It may be a bit slow for some folks, but the movement of water is never good when rushed. This work does not hurry the listener, but rather allows them to drift, taking the time to enjoy each note and phrase of the compositions. This is a nice addition to any New Age library. mafoster

"Water" is one of four CDs in "The Elements Series" by Peter Kater. This is one of the most calming and stunningly beautiful CDs I've heard in awhile. In fact, I had to be a little extra careful while listening to it in the car because I kept being transported to a place that doesn't require quick reflexes and focused concentration - unlike the roadways of California! The instrumentation on "Water" is all acoustic with Kater on piano, Paul McCandless on oboe and English horn, and Mike Hamilton on guitar. A few tracks are solo piano, including the incredible "Cascade." Kater's intention was to add synthesized sounds to the live music, but he felt that additions only distracted from the integrity of the music. I can't imagine that anything could enhance this music - it seems to be perfection as is. Kater and McCandless are a match made in heaven. Some of the music on this CD was composed and other parts were improvised, but it is impossible to tell which is which. In the ensemble pieces, no one is the clear leader or follower - all three musicians are allowed to shine in some sections and intertwine their musicianship in others. The eight pieces range in length from about 5 1/2 minutes to 11 1/2, allowing the music to evolve and develop at a leisurely pace. The theme of water often includes turbulence and power, but this CD is all about serenity, flow, and peace. Music that is this calming is frequently best left in the background, but this one is the rarity where the music is complex enough to listen to with full focus, hearing something new each time. This is the perfect album for unwinding, relaxing, and drifting off to a place of peace and beauty. Give your mind and body a treat, and enjoy the soothing flow of "Water." Very highly recommended!

With their aggro music, tattoos, piercings, and dreadlocks, P.O.D. (Payable on Death) might be conveniently filed next to Deftones or Rage Against the Machine. However, like U2, whose "Bullet the Blue Sky" they cover, P.O.D. are actually a Christian-based rock band, though not overtly religious enough to scare nonbelieving music fans away. This multiethnic quartet from the Southtown area of San Diego purveys an amalgam of modern music; elements of rap, metal, reggae, and hip-hop permeate this 16-track debut. P.O.D. doesn't bring much new to their hybrid style on The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, but what they do, they do well. From the gentle, reggae-tinged "Set Your Eyes to Zion" to the heavy grind of "Hollywood" and the rap-metal of "Lie Down," P.O.D.'s diverse and rockin' musical messages of positivism should make the foursome, already well known on the Christian rock circuit, a band to reckon with in secular circles. --Katherine Turman

This is the album that got me into POD. The lyrics on this album are the most overt that I have heard from any band.
"Greetings" is simply an introduction to how confrontational this album would be. This album displays true feelings, not just appeasement for the casual rock fan. 5/5
"Hollywood" puts down the "money, power, and fame" ideology of current stars. POD makes a stand that they will not be corrupted. 5/5
"Southtown" is very rhythmic and memorable. It explains the humble beginnings of the band. 5/5
"Checkin' Levels"-The band pretty much messed around with the recording sound here. Sonny does a quick freestyle song.
"Rock the Party"-This song was big on MTV. I thought it may have been a little too self-absorbed, but the tempo changes are great. Plenty of disc scratching sounds in this song makes it sound like you're in a club. Pretty unique. 4/5
"Lie Down"-Heavy, heavy guitar here. Quite a bit of yelling. I didn't care for this one too much. 3/5
"Set Your Eyes to Zion"-This is a very frank song relaying the gospel message. It's a very contemplative song about Christ's forgiveness. It's soft, but there's a lot of excellent melody. 5/5
"Lo Siento"-Simply an instrumently interlude, quite short.
"Bullet the Blue Sky"-Very surreal remake of a U2 classic. Sonny is very emotional on this track as he should be. It's a very vivid portrayal of the crucifixion of Christ. 5/5
"Psalm 150"-A man reads the Psalm aloud in Hebrew.

The rest of the CD wasn't really that memorable, save "Freestlye" and "Outkast".

"Freestyle"-showed the band's reggae side a little bit. It was pretty good. 5/5
"Outkast"-This is a hard song, but I think it shows the band's frustration about being Christians while reaching the secular audience for Christ. This band gets bothered by the constant bashing it gets on both sides. I appreciate that honesty. 5/5.

I give this album a 4 1/2 because there were some very powerful songs in here. The end of the album has a lot of filler in my opinion, but the 5/5 songs are too good to pass up. Get this thing if you can. I haven't listened to the first 10 songs in a long time, yet the lyrics are still so clear in my mind.

i havent received the CD, how can you people in amazon expect me to review the product? i regularly received packages from out of the country to my address, recently was one from netherland. but i never received an item from amazon.com. i dont know where i must deliver my complaint for this, since your cust.service told me that the fist item has been lost and a replacement has been made. if you can not guarantee a shipment to be delivered in indonesia, so dont put indonesia on the list. i dont want to claim for a replacement anymore neither that i have the desire to shop at amazon.com.

p.o.d.- but not at their finest.......2006-04-10

You would think that given the rip of this album that I gave Christian hardcore legends P.O.D. on my review of their album Satellite that my rating would be lower than this. However, the phrase "It'll grow on you." came true for me after I got this CD from a friend who really didn't like it. Though not as good as Satellite or their recent effort Testify, The Fundamental Elements of Southtown showcases much of what made P.O.D. great in the first place.

P.O.D.'s Rastafarian-lookalike singer Sonny Sandoval and the rest of the P.O.D. crew (including the now-gone guitarist Traa Daniels, replaced by Jason Truby, formerly of another Christian hardcore band called Living Sacrifice) break it down with the CD's highlight track, Southtown. Rock the Party is another standout track, with its odd music video and riffs that only a pro could play right. Other than that, though, there really wasn't much greatness. Now, don't interpret that as a statement that the rest of the CD sucked, because it didn't; the other tracks were awesome, just not so much as Southtown and Rock the Party.

I'll have you know that Jehovah Jireh is a name for God and just because they use "Jah" instead of God does not make them a non christian band. Why would Family Christian Bookstores carry their music? The reason they use "Jah" is so they can draw people in because once people hear Jesus or Christ or God they turn from it because they have been hurt by a so called CHRISTian or have been hurt in a church or whatever the story may be people aren't so willing anymore to even hear the gospel.

Ozzfest, yes they do play at that.......BUT they go out into the crowds and WITNESS to people that is why they are there. Whether you want to accept that or not that is up to you. They may have said that they aren't a Christian band but that doesn't make them as people not christians. They have said many times that they are in the business for giving the fans a positive message to let them know that whatever they're going through there is something they can turn to with that problem. If my band was big like that then I would do the same, you don't want people running from you before they even hear your message. This is what P.O.D. has done they have made it so they can draw people in with a positive message and tell them the truth. So whatever you HEARD their religion is, is not true and thats a fact if you want to email me about this I can show you other songs that prove them to be christians.

For the Review part of it this cd is great and most of their cd's are and don't forget to pick up the new album too. "Testify" is the name of the new album P.O.D. has a great purpose in the music industry and if you study up on them you will see why I say that. But if you want great rapcore with a positive message this is what you want to buy.

I know some of you will not agree with me on this but..I feel this needs to be said. I don't beileve that POD is in fact a Christian band. Listen to the lyrics is there any mention of Jesus at all? YOu may hear "JAH" or "I and I" which is the beliefs of Rastafarianism.

Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia, (also named Ras Tafari), who died in 1975, was Almighty God in the flesh. Rastafarians worship Haile Selassie, or Ras Tafari, as God.

"The Rastafarians reject Christianity and firmly believe in Haile Selassie as the returned Messiah and Ethiopia as the promised land of all Black people."

They also appear on the "Blair Witch 2" soundtrack with Marilyn Manson and others like him. WHY...would any believer want to be on the same CD as MANSON? Don't you think that it's a bit hypocritical?
Marilyn Manson, proudly boasts:
"Hopefully, I'll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity." (Spin, August 1996, p. 34)

And what about our youth that follow them... A band who calls themselves Christian but then goes on the OZZFEST Tour. What's up with that?

When P.O.D. is asked the logical and honest question - isn't their a conflict of interest when a so-called Christian band performs with the hellions and wickedness at Ozzfest. And Marcos, of P.O.D. replies "we're not necessarily a Christian band"!

You might want to research the bands that you are listening to. I use to listen to POD when they first came out..but I felt something was missing in their music. So I did a lot of research and found a lot of information that was troubling to me to say the least.

"Air" is one of the four-part Elements Series by pianist/composer Peter Kater. It is interesting to note that "Water" and "Fire" are completely acoustic, and "Earth" and "Air" are much more ambient and embellished with synthesizers and sequencers. "Air" features Kater on piano, vocals, and electronics; Paul McCandless on penny whistles, oboe, and soprano saxophone; and Richard Hardy on bamboo and soprano flutes. The CD is comprised of four lengthy pieces that were created to transport the listener to a place of beauty and peace. Some of the music was composed prior to the recording, and some was improvised - it is virtually impossible to tell which is which. Kater certainly shares the spotlight, allowing McCandless and Hardy to add their own magic to the creative process.

"Wings of Sound" is more than twenty minutes of soothing ambient music that, although calm, has the sweep of a soundtrack - perhaps to accompany a sunset or watching birds effortlessly floating in the sky. "Flying Dream" is 16 1/2 minutes of bliss. Ambient and ethereal, it's so easy to just let your mind drift away. The wordless vocals and layers of synth sounds envelop the minimalist piano and carry you off to Dreamland. "All Souls" is mostly electronic, but the flutes, whistles, and piano occasionally bring the heavenly sounds back to earth. "Heaven's Gate" sustains the mood of serenity with mostly piano and synth; McCandless weaves in his magical oboe in the last few minutes.

The "Elements Series" is an amazing achievement in peaceful, uplifting music. Peter Kater has been one of my favorite artists for several years, and these CDs are all excellent. Treat yourself to a relaxing vacation for the mind without having to buy gas or a plane ticket! Recommended.

I am not familiar with most of these songs. The quality of the recordings are very nice and professional, but I don't recognize but only two of the songs. Anyway, if you are looking for Earth, Wind & Fire's greatest hits, do yourself a favor: DO NOT CHOSE THIS ONE !!!

EWF - A ggod collection if..........2006-11-03

Overall, you know what to expect from an EWF compilation. Overall, this is good and contains all the songs you would expect and a few that I had totally forgotten. If you already own the Greatest Hits CD you have most of the songs you are probably wanting to hear, but if you want to amass the definitive collection of EWF this is a good purchase.

Great Recording, but not to my taste.......2005-06-09

I'd heard of Earth Wind & Fire but knew very little about them. But being struck with the "being in love" bug, I naturally have a proclivity for music that seems to address this illness. The title hooked me and I ordered it.

The quality of the vocals and of the musicians is superb across the board. That being said, it is mostly not to my taste so I am not qualified to provide a great review. There are a few tracks I really like. "I'll Write a Song for You" comes immediately to mind as does "Be Ever Wonderful". Those, in particularly, reached out to me. The others were well done but did not suit.

I am not at all unhappy about buying this one. Earth Wind & Fire fans should enjoy it especially.

Excellence........2005-04-12

This is a product you'll enjoy from track 1 to the finish. The remastering has really put the icing on the cake. You will feel as if the Boys are doing Devotion or Be Ever Wonderful right in your living room. Phillip Bailey falsettoes are all over the tracks, Maurice White does his best neo-spiritualist, non denomination deacon, and McKay/Dunn/Verdine on rhythm instuments set this whole enterprise just right. Even Nasciemento's afro-Brasilian Rhyme Interlude is given a fresh hearing here. You won't find That's the Way (yow!) of the World, but you are gonna hear All About Love and an equally impressive Imagination here.(I really don't understand why folks prefer Reasons to Imagination, but they both are heard here.) With the summer season coming up, you know you're gonna need some great ol' school grooves to listen to on those lazy evenings reserved for deprogramming and chillin'. This is a perfect CD for doing just that.
