Editorial Reviews

S.F. Sorrow has a significant place in rock & roll history, though it's hardly widely acknowledged. Generally considered the first "rock opera," the 1967 opus by erstwhile gritty rockers turned psychedelic visionaries predates the Who's vastly more popular Tommy by a year. (Incidentally, there are significant parallels between the plots of both records.) Some would therefore lay blame for all the theatrical tomfoolery that followed at the feet of the Pretties, but they didn't get much credit for their accomplishment, so they probably don't deserve much reproof. Like most everything that came out of London in the late '60s, S.F. Sorrow owes a debt to the Beatles in its sonic adventurousness (Beatles/Pink Floyd engineer Norman Smith deserves credit) and kaleidoscopic lyrical bent, albeit with darker hues (the protagonist's sweetheart is killed in a hydrogen balloon explosion). If your idea of a night at the opera centers around classic Brit rock, S.F. Sorrow is just the ticket. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-11-07

An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks you Decca.......2005-01-23

My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite music for the soul.......2004-06-14

These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!

5 out of 5 stars Indeed a joy forever!.......2003-05-22

Before buying this 2 CD set,I've read Reviews by Chicagodreamer,
who rated it as "Highly, highly recommended." His laudatory recommentation, I must say, is found "well justified."

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15

"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.

The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. Looking for a fantastic collection of exquisite pieces written and performed by genius? It's here. Highly, highly recommended!!

There are TWO versions of S.F. Sorrow that Snapper released on CD. The digipack is the STEREO mix; the jewel case Snapper is the MONO mix. Both are interesting in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars possibly the best 60s album ever!!!!.......2007-01-02

This album is like a revelation- it concided at the same time as piper and sgt peppers(within the same year or so-atleast from the recording sessions) snd in my humble opinion is better than Barrets and the beatles own masterpieces- this is beautifully recorded tripped out and has the distinction of being the first "rock opera". Fantastic songwriting and a great narrative makes this truly unique- hearing this now i cant believe how great it sounds. If you like 60s pysche and catchy but quirky british invasion styled tunes this is a must own. My version has bonus tracks which are great but this album is best listened in its original form- its a headphone masterpiece- i cant stress how well produced this is. Put simply if you dig the beatles floyd love "satanic era" stones and other summer of love styled albums this is essential- perhaps more so than any other 60s record.

5 out of 5 stars My name is W.T. and I am an S.F.SORROW Addict.......2006-04-07

Well, how to explain my addiction to you, dear reader. First, i love 60s psychedelic music, tho I'm not from that era. Second, I like to dig deep, into the obscure bands. I had heard of THE PRETTY THINGS for a long time, before i finally started to explore them, first with their EMOTIONS album. (Not a good place to start.) Then, I bought the SF SORROW CD. I got it, played it, and wasnt sure i liked it. I wasnt in the "RIGHT FRAME OF MIND". Actually, this is an album that DEMANDS more attention from listeners, and also from the critics, than it receives. IT was the influence for TOMMY, according to Pete. Personally, i find all kinds of obvious reference points, between this album, and TOMMY. Both are named after the one character, both operas are Epic, and start at birth, end at death. Both rely on a mysterious evil person (BARON SATURDAY, verses ACID QUEEN) to screw up the protagonists' head. In any event, i would have loved to have heard what might have happened if this story had been stretch out over two LPs. But, for what this is, the one LP is enough. As you listen to this CD a few times, some songs just STICK inside you. BALLOON BURNING is a great one for that, espeically the psychedelic freak out guitar playing, when the Hindenberg is burning. There are some songs, after S.F.SORROW has his run in with BARON SATURDAY, who seems to have blown his mind with drugs, and forcing him into the WELL OF DESTINY. At the opera's end, with S.F.SORROW having lost the love of his life, and with his mind confused, he becomes a total hermit. In his old age, the song that just wraps this concept peice together, is the breathtakingly beautiful song TRUST. Check out these lyrics "AND THERES NO SORROW LEFT IN THE WORLD THATS LEFT TO TRUST". Apparently, after his birth, service in World War ONE, and the tragic death of his young fiancee, the mind trips of BARON SATURDAY, and so on, SF SORROW has desided to become the LONELIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. After the heavy production values of the opera, to end it with the isolation of a MAN and his GUITAR, singing of total isolation, works musically and theatrically. I can completely picture this OPERA on Stage. In fact, the Boston Rock Opera Company has preformed it on stage.

The CD comes with two SINGLES worth of great psychedelic music, and a wonderful booklet with all the lyrics, the connecting storyline, and a long essay about the backstory to the writing of the peice, and the history of the Band. After all, this CD was recorded at ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS, with the same people, and the same know-how, at the same time ABBEY ROAD STUDIO was recording PIPERS AT THE GATES OF DAWN, and MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. Let me say this: if you enjoy the Pink Floyd/Beatles type of "psychedelic sound", then you'll like the way the production is handled on SF SORROW. My only critism, is that the CD is MONO. Apparently, you can get the STEREO version, if you buy the 2CD set, with the CONTEMPORARY COMPLETE PREFORMANCE of the entire Opera, along with the narration voiced in. I read that the stereo version is plagued with sloppy stereo seperation. I have not found listening to this in MONO to diminish my appreciation of the work. In fact, as far as "DATED" psychedelic sounds, at least this album in MONO doesnt have the sound swirling between speakers, or any of those placement tricks, that DO sound dated, with todays audience. So, the effect of the heavy psychedelic sections, are more that of OVERLOAD, like the Velvet Underground with WHITE LITE, which doesnt rely on stereo games, for most of the songs. Rather than sitars, wah-wah guitar solos bouncing back and forth between the speakers, etc, you have the essence of the MUSIC, sparking the colors.

So, What does this sound like? Dont go by the earlier PRETTY THINGS sound, cos for one thing, they had changed a few major members of the group, before this LP. EMOTIONS, altho attempting psychedelia, was overdubbed against the bands wishes with tons of strings. And, the early R&B sound, isnt present on this album at all. Maybe because it DOESNT Sound just like anyone else, is why I am able to listen to this album over and over, and get so into it. THE PRETTY THINGS were never major movers and shakers in the UK psychedelic sound, but for some people, this ALBUM is up there with SGT PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATE OF DAWN. So, I recommend just buying it. This opera might take a couple of times to get under your skin. I do think that there is enough here, to make it a worthwild investigation for anyone into the psychedelic sound, or perhaps the growth and developement of the Concept album- Rock opera.

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasures of the Sixties.......2006-01-07

S.F. Sorrow is one of the hidden treasures of the 60s. I first heard the album in 1979 at a friend's house. I already owned their "Silk Torpedo" album from 1974. At the time I liked it even though psychedelic albums sounded dated. I came to appreciate more over time. Listening to the opening track "S.F. Sorrow Is Born" first reminded me of Stephen Stills with the acoustic guitar and then the Moody Blues with the mellotron. The horn overdubs gave it a different sound. One should contrast this version with the "BBC Sessions" version which uses a Hammond organ instead of a mellotron and no horns. Next comes "Bracelets" a song about masturbation which anticipates groups like Queen. "She Says Good Morning" is about falling in love. "Private Sorrow" about going to war with an interlude that segues into "Balloon Burning". This latter song alludes to the Hindenburg disaster and features an excellent guitar solo by Dick Taylor. Next comes "Death", a bluesy dirge that has keyboardist John Povey playing sitar (owned by George Harrison). "Baron Saturday" follows and features Dick Taylor on vocals and a drum solo followed by flutes, etc. This is followed by the medley of "The Journey" which starts out with acoustic guitars and ends with electric acid rock rave up that segues into "I See You" a melancholy song in the vein of Cream's "White Room" and finally into the noise effects of "Well of Destiny". All is calm with the instrospective "Trust" a song about seeking new values and then the violent "Old Man Going" which features acoustic and electric guitar interplay (compare this to the Who's "Pinball Wizzard") and finally "The Loneliest Person". The Snapper reissue has four bonus tracks which are excellent psychedelic pop songs from 1967-1968. I would have added some other bonus tracks from the BBC Sessions "Turn Your Head" and "SF Sorrow Is Born". Supposedly, "Defecting Grey" was originally recorded as a 12 minute demo. That may be nice too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delightful collection.......2001-03-25

A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.

Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.

For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.

To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.

(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)

5 out of 5 stars 6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04

Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.

While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.

Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.

Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...

His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!

The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04

To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14

The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13

I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

4 out of 5 stars Remember Earl Wild...?.......2005-08-02

Sometimes it takes a while before a man becomes a legend. With the rebirth of appreciation for the "Romantic pianists" (pianists who took great liberties with scores when the composer was in the tradition of such changes in his lifetime - like Liszt, etc) comes a renewed appreciation for the piano mastery of Earl Wild. Somehow always under the shadow of his contemporaries such as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Serkin, et al, Wild had a strong following among a few orchestras and devoted recital attendees. But in his lifetime his popularity waned when he began emphasizing his own 'transcriptions'.

Well, now with the release of this never less than interesting CD the artistry of Earl Wild is bound to gain a new applauding audience. These pieces are his own transcriptions of well known works by composers such as Saint-Saens, Handel, Rachmaninov, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, and some of his own 'homages' to Faure and Poulenc. The playing is incandescently romantic: for sheer exhilaration of excitement these transcriptions are inimitable. The only other album to some close to this is Wild playing Liszt's transcriptions of operas!

This is a well-produced and very fun album for any mood. And it just may well be the kind of entry to the big works that young people need! Grady Harp, August 05

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!.......2000-09-06

As a pianist myself, I truly appreciated this cd. Wild is a genius! I especially loved "Reminiscenes of Snow White". I'm positively dying to get my hands on the score of it!!!! Very well done!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Perlman Collection.......2004-02-28

    Hi,

I think this is a very nice Perlman collection...Beautiful works selected from different Musical Eras and different styles...And Mr. Perlman is very succesful in all these types of masterworks...you can easily feel the Bach's crying words...Mozart's fun...Brahms's passion...Sinding's virtuosity...Wienlawski's Romantism...Khachaturian's hurry...and Rachmaninov's sentiments....and many others...
and also Israeli Orchestra did a very good job on this performance...They are like the third hand of Perlman...They work and feel like a family...
If you are a Perlman Fan, you must have been already bought this CD...if you are not or new to this performer it is time to meet him..and it is the way to meet him...go!!!

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Perlman.......2002-03-11

If you enjoy Itzhak Perlman and do not have very many of the selections on these discs, here is one way to get hold of them. Each of the four discs boasts a theme: 1. Baroque and Chamber Music, 2. Violin and Orchestra, 3. 20th Century Music, and 4. The Lighter Side. The selections are naturally limited to recordings Perlman did with EMI, but this represents quite a bit of his overall output. Among the recordings of the Sibelius Violin Concerto that I've heard, the one included here with André Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one I enjoy immensely. I like the cinematic sweep of the Korngold Concerto; the Bach Violin Partita; the jazz selections written by Previn. There isn't much that I don't like here. Here is a compilation where variety is a key factor. If you're into variety and Perlman's style, this set gives you plenty of both.

5 out of 5 stars Our Greatest Living Violinist.......2000-05-11

Almost 30 years ago, at Penn State while I was a student there, Itzhak Perlman visited, gave some lessons to aspiring violinists and gave the most astounding, memorable concert I've ever attended. Quite to the contrary of the fellow from Baton Rouge, Perlman was the consummate teacher who critiqued and encouraged students with far lesser talents, and he did it with class. This collection contains a number of recordings I already have but consider them worth having again in such a superbly arranged collection. His arrangements on the Hungarian Dances are the best!

5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great man........2000-01-06

The sentiments of certain Baton Rouge residents notwithstanding, this is the consummate collection from a great artist AND a great humanitarian.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad. But Hilary Hanh plays Bach more beautifully.......1999-11-16

Perlman plays Bach quite well, but when compared to Hilary Hahn, Perlman comes out second best. Hilary captures the whole essence and spirit of Bach, and herr violin sings Bach in two, three, and four beautiful voices in perfect harmnony.

5 out of 5 stars The CD I want to lend to everyone . . ........2004-04-27

. . . except that it's the CD I don't want to lend to anyone. As masterful and elegant as anything you'll ever hear, but also highly accessible (in fact I caught my 18-year-old definitely-not-a-baroque-fan brother whistling the first Zelenka aria -- rather spiritedly, too -- after just one incidental hearing). Tafelmusik's playing is a pleasure throughout, for its trademark freshness and immediacy -- I especially enjoy Vivaldi's "String Concerto in C Major" on this disk -- and the arias practically seem to be made for Matthew White. From the lively brilliance of Zelenka, to the gentle "Noli o cara te adorantis" from Vivaldi's "Juditha triumphans" (the words are actually kind of sinister, but could you really cut off the head of anyone who sang to you like this?), to the whole varied set from A. Scarlatti's "Cain" (for pure beauty, just listen to "Miei genitori, addio"), you can only increasingly admire White's unerring musical sense and command -- and of course that stunning, lovely voice.
