The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Product Description

Singer/songwriter Sally Dworsky has made a new album with her brother Richard Dworsky---pianist and musical director for A Prairie Home Companion. It’s a collection of simple, sweetly soulful interpretations of some of the last century’s great songs---all done with spare arrangements and pure emotion; spontaneous, evocative and heartwarming.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vocalist--new to me.......2007-07-16

Beautiful. The first time I heard her sing on Prairie Home Companion I cried. She and her brother took the children's song "The Red, Red Robin" and slowed it down into a haunting blues tune. I've purchased a couple of CDs as gifts for others. They enjoyed it also.

4 out of 5 stars really nice album.......2007-03-10

I heard Sally Dworsky's Nick Drake cover on a local radio station, and I knew I had to buy the album. I really like most of the songs, and her voice is great, reminiscent of Shawn Colvin. I give it four out of five because I don't think it's too original--good but pretty straightforward renditions of some great songs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Fire Note Says: Retro-Cool!.......2007-04-21

Any band coming out of Detroit right now still gets the garage rock comparisons. Leave that thought at the door because The Singles hail from Detroit but only share some qualities with those other bands like their liveliness and tight musicianship. The Singles are a straight up power pop band that have a very modern Kinks sound. Start Again is The Singles sophomore release and it expands on the retro sound found on their debut Better Than Before [2003], while still retaining the heart of the band and never leaving that core sound. What does stand out is that Start Again turns up the amps a bit more with heavier rockers like "I Want You Back Now" and "Hypnotized" that sound great blaring at high volumes. The album also has better transitions that flow seamlessly track to track and balance the harder charging songs with perfect timeless 2 minute Buddy Hollyish nuggets such as "Cryin' Over You". If you have not checked out The Singles, I would recommend you pick up both Start Again and Better Than Before because they are a breath of fresh air that really do a great job of repackaging a sixties sound for a new generation. Trust me you will be entertained!

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Perfect.......2001-12-31

I lent my copy of Pete 'n' Keely to a friend. When she returned my CD, she said that it was perfect. I agree. Many of the songs are an enjoyable trip down memory lane that brings back many fond memories. The new songs by Patrick Brady and Mark Waldropfit right in. Sally Mayes does the best rendition of "Black Coffee" that I have ever heard.Goerge Dvorsky's Fever" is also fantastic. It is not unusual for me to be sitting at my desk at work and have one of the songs run through my memory. That isd without any music in the background. My friends who have heard me play the CD have purchased a copy for themselves, they liked the CD so much.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11

This album is a MUST for any fan of Broadway - full of upbeat musical magic performed flawlessly by George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes.

The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.

Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.

The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.

This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.

If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...

If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...

And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but kind of disappointing.......2006-04-17

This isn't a bad recording, but the tracks are not the actual performances off of any cast recording of any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. The reditions of the songs on the disc are of varying quality. Some are pretty good. Some are borderline awful.
It is a good collection for inexpensively getting a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most popular songs in one place and having them there to be able to listen to get the idea of what a certain song sounds like and is about. It isn't the collection of definitive recordings for certain roles. In fact in a couple examples, I wonder if the performer fully understood the context of the song he or she was singing &/or what it was about. Overall, the album is good, for the most part, if not excellent.

However, the liner notes for "The Essential Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber" is another matter. I don't mean to be unkind, but the author of the comments on the different tracks (one Rexton S. Bunnett) is blatantly WRONG in multiple instances. I don't mean just in nit-picky details, but in major plot details/context of songs, like the fact that Bunnett identifies "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as being sung by "our heroine" (who he does not even identify by name as Christine Daae) as she thinks about her lover, not as being sung about Christine's dead father. He also says that the Phantom has found his perfect love and "Angel of Music" in Christine... because HE is the Angel of Music who Christine believes has been sent to her by her dead father, and because although the Phantom is obsessed with Christine, that relationship is far from "loving" (even if Christine shows him compassion. I feel like these (and a couple other mistakes) are major plot points to get wrong. A good amount of the commentary reads as if Bunnett might have written it at the last minute, fudging his way through entries on musicals of which he had little knowledge; like what an essay I might write on a book I never read for my college class but had quickly looked up on Cliff's Notes would sound like. In terms of sheer editing, there are spelling mistakes, run-on sentences and spacing errors ("Any DreamWill Do")in the liner notes. Where was the copy editor?
And the most frightening fact of all, under Bunnett's credentials, it says "Harper Collins has just published his revision and updating of the Collins Book of the Musical."
I am being very critical, but I think that for a widely-released CD it is reasonable to expect the liner notes to be at a professional level, as they were most likely supposed to be.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..........2005-04-23

I was looking for a CD of the original performances and this CD doesn't have them. I suppose it was my fault for not looking closer, but the songs just weren't the same. Personally, I was not impressed. If you don't care that they aren't the originals then it is nice to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Some great performances, some not so great..........2005-04-18

This CD is actually pretty good, considering you get 40 songs for less than $16. Let's evaluate the pros and cons.

Pros:

Two classic songs that are performed excellently are Phantom of the Opera and I Don't Know How to Love Him.

Of course you want to compare Phantom to the classic Michael Crawford/ Sarah Brightman version. Well, guess what? This version is BETTER. The woman has a deeper voice than Brightman, and her singing style is just awesome. The ending of this version (you know, the "Sing, my angel of music, sing for me!") is different, but in a good way... I think.)

And of course, the standard for I Don't Know How to Love Him is Yvonne's version. This version is different, but it grew on me quickly. This version has a country feel to it, almost. Somehow it works and sounds great.

There are a lot of great performances in this collection. My favorites include: Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Could We Start Again Please, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Buenos Aires, Rainbow High, Only You, Starlight Express, Angel of Music, Masquerade, All I Ask of You, Half a Moment, and Whistle Down the Wind. I think they're all great versions of their more famous counterparts.

Cons:

First of all, there are some technical problems that are kind of disappointing. A few of the songs have a very echoey sound. Any Dream Will Do, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and There's Me are the songs that come to mind that are the worst in this regard. It isn't really bad, just enough to be slightly annoying, more so when the volume is turned way up on your CD player.

A few songs are worthy of skipping over when listening to this collection. In my opinion, Superstar, Sunset Boulevard, and Gethesmane are the biggest disappointments.

Superstar just doesn't cut it for me. The singer really overdoes it, making it overstylized... really makes you yearn for Murray Head. I can't stand listening to it. Just my opinion.

Sunset Boulevard is one of my very favorite musicals, so I was really hoping that the singer would do justice to its title song. Unfortunately I don't think he did. You can't help but compare it to Alan Campbell's fantastic version. This guy has a very choppy way of singing, when I'm used to it being sung so smoothly. Maybe it would grow on me, but I don't think I'll give it a chance to. However, that last note is much stronger than Alan Campbell's. It doesn't make up for the rest of the song, though.

Finally, Gethsemane. The inevitable fact is that NO ONE can sing this song like Michael Ball. This guy tries, he really does. But he doesn't have the right voice or the right style. So please listen to Michael Ball's performance of Gethsemane if you want to know how breathtaking of a song it can be. It's on the Royal Albert Hall DVD, and I'm sure he's got it on one of his CDs.

Anyway, overall, this is a good CD if you like quantity over quality. Don't buy it for the classics, you'll probably end up disappointed with many of them. Buy it for the lesser known songs. You probably won't like every song, especially if you're a big ALW fan, but for the price, it's worth it.

If you want classic versions of classic ALW songs, you might prefer something like "The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection".

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-03-11

The singer(s)does not do justice for the lyrics. It was grating to the ears. Save your money for the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Talent at Its Best.......2003-01-03

What a pleasure to hear a collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful music from such wonderful voices accompanied by an outstanding symphony. This sensational CD is a treasure to own.

5 out of 5 stars they were simply great.......2005-11-14

I heard the song "reach" on the radio a few years back, and just had to buy the cd. The cd changed the way i look at music. This is not your run-of-the-mill rock band that puts out a hit or two hidden among crap. This is a band that is just GOOD. Sadly, after 11 years and only 1 national release, they broke up. Grab the cd before it's gone, or you may never find it again (and you will be missing out on the best)!

5 out of 5 stars great band.......2003-07-22

i was flicking through the channels one day and came across a band playing on a show called livewire. it was strange occurrence. they sounded awsome but nowhere can i find this cd. i have looked everywhere. plus u cant download them cause they cant be found. it isnt as big as alot similiar bands cause they're christian. and thats not right they r as good (if not better) then much of this [stuff} on tv. i have heard almost every song and my favorite is "inside". overall it gets 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Another spectacular Christian band mired by their religion.......2002-12-31

What can you say of a cd that sounds exceptional, both in lyric content and musical content, but yet stays hidden in the shadows? It's Christian. The only reason Strange Occurence will not get the much deserved attention that a cd of this caliber should is that the "Christian" nation of the United States hates to hear of their Creator in the music they listen to. As for the cd itself, it maintains momentum from the first track to the very last reeling from soft songs such as "Fear" to harder rock songs like "Dark Matter." All in all, it is one of the few cds that deserves the five star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Great Surprise.......2002-08-16

This was a great surprise. I seldom find a CD that I like all the trackes. Keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars A life altering experience.......2002-08-01

Once every few years an obscure CD causes a nation to
re-examine their lives. Such a CD is "Another Day to Start Again." The recording industry regularly tosses out charming lyrics and seductive voices with all the sincerity of a McDonald's commercial.
Occasionally a voice happens on the music scene...a voice like
the one belonging to TJ Harris. Not pretty, not easily dismissed or categorized.
A voice with a plaintive rasp...like Kim Carnes or Rod Stewart...
a voice that whispers pain and tells a simple story...yours.
Do your dreams a favor. Mumble your credit card number and buy this CD. Listen to it as you commute to that job you hate and answers will come.

5 out of 5 stars Best Single Disc Gore Anthology Available.......2003-08-01

Lesley Gore was far more than America's little sob sister of the '60s. Her voice was solid and most of her singles on Mercury Records were well-produced. While she started out making (appropriately) adolescent records, her material definitely matured as time went on.

This 30-track retrospective START THE PARTY AGAIN - an import from Australia's Raven Records - is the best single disc available on Gore. Like MANY Gore collections, it contains all of the essential ("It's My Party," "Judy's Turn To Cry," "She's A Fool," "Maybe I Know" and her feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me") as well as the near-essential ("Sunshine Lollipops & Rainbows," "Look Of Love," and "California Nights") hits.

What gives START THE PARTY AGAIN the firm single disc edge is its greater abundance of minor hits and choice album sides. The double-voiced single "Brink of Disaster" is among Gore's most original recordings, with Gore reciting her "conscience's" lines through a megaphone. "Small Talk" and "Summer And Sandy" are nice, breezy summer fare. The relatively low chart placements of these 1967-68 singles says more about pop radio's attitude toward one-time teen stars than it does the quality of these records.

Four tracks from Gore's best album MY TOWN, MY GUY, AND ME are included, with the defiant "I Don't Care" and the ultra-poignant "What Am I Gonna Do About You" being particularly noteworthy. The only real clunkers on this collection are the frantic single "We Know We're In Love" (which Gore immortalized on The Donna Reed Show) and the three recordings Gore sings in German. Their spots would have been better occupied by some of Gore's late '60s singles such as the lush "He Gives Me Love" and the haunting, psychedelic "Magic Colors." Both of those pearls are available on the Bear Family's Gore box set and the double-disc IT'S MY PARTY: THE MERCURY ANTHOLOGY.

5 out of 5 stars She'll cry if she wants to, dammit!.......2001-12-28

Next to the Bear family extravaganza covering all of Lesley's Mercury recordings, this is the best survey of her career. The guy who put this together really knew his Lesley! It is fascinating that 40 years on the world is finally realizing Lesley was more than a teen star, that she was an entirely original artist with an unusual voice unlike any other and records that were produced at the highest state of the art with some of the best talent around. Gore's records stand up incredibly today. There's so much TO them. This is an entirely captivating C.D. you will play over and over. Lesley may not want us to own her but she sure as hell owns us!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun!.......2001-10-06

I have all the Lesley Gore compilations, and this is the best one. Whereas all the other compilations were put together by record companies and include the most obvious songs, this one was put together by a true Lesley Gore fan, and therefore includes some really interesting stuff.

For one thing, this is the only compilation that has Lesley's sizzling rendition of "No Matter What You Do", a very wild and passionate song that totally rocks out with a nasty guitar solo. Not a song one would normally associate with Lesley Gore. She and her background vocalists sound as if they're at a Chippendales performance after having been stranded on an island for ten years. Would've been a hit, except it was too "hot" for 1965 AM radio. I have to blow a fan on my speakers when playing this scorcher, lest all the wiring melt. Also, "What's A Girl Supposed To Do" is here, which should have been a hit single. This song is classic Barry/Greenwich, in the same class as the hits they wrote for the Crystals and Ronettes.

Also, this is the only compilation which includes the superior 45 rpm mixes of "Summer with Sandy" and "Brink of Disaster".

Also, you get to hear Lesley sing in German. "Sieben Girls" is a hoot, because Lesley makes it sound as if these seven girls can't keep away from Johnny.

Lastly, the liner notes and cover art are really fun to read and look at.

Lesley Gore worked with only the best producers and songwriters, and she sang of love and heartbreak, so her music will always be timeless. She was a total class act.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Australian Lesley Gore 60s Compilation.......1999-08-15

Australian Billboard editor, Glenn A. Baker, who is also a prolific pop music writer, put this close-to-definitive anthology of sixties pop-rock queen Lesley Gore's work together in the 80s on his own vinyl label, and reissued it in 1993 on Raven. Most of the chart hits are here, along with a lengthy, informative and fun essay by Baker himself, who obviously loves the Teen Queen's records. His favorite Gore LP is "My Town, My Guy and Me" from 1965, and five of its tracks are found here, in addition to the title hit, which bear ample witness to his testimony. The 1968 Bonner and Gordon single, "Small Talk" (also covered by Gary Lewis and The Turtles) is here, as are three German language songs, including one original called "Sieben Girls" which is a hoot. Other cuts not found on the other Gore compilations currently available are the smokin' and incendiary balls-out rocker, "No Matter What You Do" and the snarling multi-tracked self-loathing of "I Don't Care." Recommended to anyone interested in a good overview of Gore's 60s material, and to serious Goreheads for the essay and photos alone.

Album Description

By 1977, the punk-rock movement had become a parody of itself. Rip It Up And Start Again, the book and the CD, is a celebration of what happened next: post-punk bands like The Slits, Devo, Scritti Politti, Cabaret Voltaire, The Raincoats, and The Human League, who dedicated themselves to fulfilling punk's unfinished musical revolution. The post-punk groups were fervent modernists - experimenting with electronics and machine rhythm or adapting ideas from dub reggae and disco. A veritable cornucopia of the great and the good from the late 70s/early 80s era, Rip It Up covers the postpunk spectrum from household names to esoteric cult artists. V2 Records. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-01-20

This CD acompanies Simon Reynolds' excellent book. While any CD would have trouble living up to that book's greatness, this is a nice small post-punk compilation. One may argue whether some tracks are really indispensable, and one might have wanted some more rare and esoteric stuff, since the book coontains quite a bit of it. however the CD does a decent job and is recommended as such.
