Album Description

CHICKS ON SPEED finally make their long awaited US-return with the CD- release of their brilliant album 99 CENTS on their own independent label CHICKS ON SPEED RECORDS after it was released in the rest of the world by Labels/EMI. The new album, their third long player, follows `The Re - Releases Of The Un - Releases' (COSR00) compilation and 2000's brilliant debut `Will Save Us All' (COSR01), and is without doubt their finest collection of songs to date. Written and recorded in their hometown of Berlin by the CHICKS ON SPEED line up of Kiki Moorse, Melissa Logan and Alex Murray-Leslie with the production team GLOVE the new album sees the band collaborate with a number of their favourite musicians, including Miss Kittin, Le Tigre, Nicola from Adult and Talking Heads' / Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth, who teams up with CHICKS ON SPEED for a take on her own 1981 classic `Wordy Rappinghood'. `We Don't Play Guitars' features another guest appearance, this time from Peaches on vocals and guitar, and sees CHICKS ON SPEED deliver the type of perfect pop song they've so far only threatened. CHICKS ON SPEED, who began as a fake band at The Munich Art Academy in 1997, have explored and exploited all facets of music and art since releasing their debut 7" `Warm Leatherette' in 1998. The trio have created their own personal, international, "do it yourself" melting pot style and have more than established themselves in the fields of pop music, fashion and art. The band publish a book in October 2003 entitled "Chicks on Speed, It´s a project!", with London publisher Booth-Clibborn. As a very special bonus for the US-CD-edition only the double cd will contain 2 Bonus-Videos of "We Don't Play Guitars (feat. Peaches)" and "Wordy Rappinghood" as well as 9 (!) remixes of these songs by electronic music greats CHICKEN LIPS, DAVE CLARKE, TREVOR JACKSON/PLAYGROUP, CRISTIAN VOGEL, TIEFSCHWARZ, CHRISTOPHER JUST, GERHARD POTUZNIK, CAPTAIN COMATOSE and GERHARD POTUZNIK.

I put off buying this album forever as I was hoping there would one day be a domestic release that wouldn't be so cost prohibitive, and here it is! I would say it's definetly more accessible than The Unreleases, and is a perfect follow up to Save Us All. Fashion Rules, We Don't Play Guitars (featuring Peaches) and Sell-out are worth the price of the cd alone, and more than make up for the very few filler tracks. the remix cd is allright, it's a nice bonus but nothing amazing. If you've never heard COS before, or think why should I care since electroclash or whatever is so 2001- COS represent the best of their genre, crazed electronic pop halfway between the go-go's and nina hagen. And they're funny as hell, and put on an awesome live show.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome second CD!.......2004-07-28

I bought their first CD while in Germany, touring with my parents, waaaayyyy back then. I loved their music then, though some people would think it was just too strange and disjointed.

Well they have come out with this CD. This album is much more mature than the first, but it still captures a lot of CoS weirdness which I love. The addition of Peaches in my favorite track, "We Don't Play Guitars", is just perfect! The video included on the CD is great.

Most of the songs I love, though some of them just go on for too long and it gets monotonous after awhile. But this album will certainly appeal to a broader spectrum of listeners, due to their matured sound, and a more rock feel to their music, rather than random songs, and lyrics that just fly all over the place (which I still loved immensely!)

If you're looking for something TOTALLY different in the electronica scene, this is certainly worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD. NOW........2004-05-12

My dad gave this CD to me for working hard at school.
I love my dad.
This is one of the greatest albums ever created. All of the songs are great, and you notice how much effort has been put into making the songs as good as they could possibly be, and "Culture Vulture" is probably one of the ten greatest songs ever (including Bruce Springsteen's songs).
When listening to this CD for the first time, I had not heard much of the Chicks other work, which is why I didn't rate this CD depending on how COS-style it is, but instead depending on if it is good or not. Therefore, long-time fans of COS may have a different opinion about this CD. 'Tis a pity.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-01-30

No question about it - Chicks on Speed are a wild little group. But, oddly enough, this album seems to be their stab at mainstream success. Gone are the majority of their rough edges and in are vaguely Garbage-inflected pop tunes. A decent stab at popularity, but I expect more from this group. On 99 Cents they don't sound like they're on speed - more like Chicks on Light Refreshments.

5 out of 5 stars The Chix Machine will think for you..........2003-11-21

O yeah, they're goddesses in this electro-age! This cd isn't as edgy as Re-Releases, more of a take off from Will Save Us All, but egg-cellent nonetheless... I got the cd last month and I couldn't stop listening to it! Shooting From The Hip simply rocks! Though I miss the egg-xtended version of We Don't Play Guitars, the version with more of Alex's vocal. Saw them last year with Peaches and I still wonder why Peaches didn't open for COS instead! :o)

The video for We Don't Play Guitars is a riot, and don't forget the hidden track at the very end of Fashion Rules! Overall, I think they're brilliant individuals and deserved to be heard. 'nough said!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album by Chicks on Speed.......2003-11-12

I have been really impressed with Chicks on Speed's long-awaited second full length album. The Re-releases were clever and spunky. 99 cents is as well, though there is less punk influence and more electronics (and they announce "we don't play guitars!". I think that this bodes well for them, as some of the some on the re-releases was a little tough on the ears.

What I'd say about this new Chicks on Speed album is that it is more refined and better produced. The music itself is better, and the beats and hooks are good. C.O.S. employs Peaches and Miss Kitten for a track each on the album. The Miss Kitten track unfortunately just doesn't work very well, though Peaches does fine.

Chicks on Speed message has always been about self-expression and non-conformity, and 99 cents is a continuation of that message. On this album they take that to a new level when they talk about the money that is spent to increase personal vanity. This theme comes into play often on the tracks 99 cents, Sell Out, and Fashion Rules. They are also my favorite tracks on the album.

Chicks on Speed also designs their own clothing and does some art, as they were art students in Munich. They have created "urban camouflage" t-shirts which are quite clever. They've also in the past designed paper dresses and other snazzy clothing.

I saw them when they came to Boston and they performed very well. I had a long conversation with Alex before the concert, and she was intelligent, articulate, and friendly. I highly recommend this album as it can open the mind and provide some great enjoyment.
