Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Abbarific.......2007-03-20

This has always been one of my favorite albums, not just the hit songs but all the tunes. The extras on the DVD are excellent, especially the commercials for the album, it reminds me of the old K-Tel album commercials when I was a kid. Its wonderful seeing the live performances of some of the tunes, the only ones missing on the dvd are "That's Me" and "Arrival". I'm not surprised if there were no video created for "Arrival" since it is without vocal. My only complaint is there isent more extras, I know that when the "Arrival" album came out Abba did alot more promotion for the album, who knows maybe some other footage is floating out there somewhere. It is worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful... An Anniversary Issue To Treasure.......2007-03-10

This 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of ABBA's fourth album, released in October 2006, is an absolute delight. The CD itself has been given a brand new remastering. The 2001 remasters were already very good and differences between the old and new are subtle. The newer remastering is set at a higher sound level. It has greater presence. It has greater separation of instruments and voices and it has marginally more prominent bass. That said, most people will not notice the difference and if you're content with just the album, the 2001 remasters will more than suffice at a much lower price. The real treasures here are the Extras.

The CD includes all 3 versions of "Fernando", in English, Spanish and Swedish. The Swedish "Fernando" is especially treasurable because until now it has only been available on Anni-Frid's Swedish solo album "Frida Insam", and on ABBA's "På Svenska" album, both difficult to find outside of Sweden. It's also good to have "Happy Hawaii" the early version of what eventually came to be "Why Did It Have To Be Me". Nice to compare the two versions, the former with the girls singing lead vocals and the latter with Bjorn on lead vocal. There are Spanish versions of "Dancing Queen" (La Reina Del Baile) and "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (Conociéndome, Conociéndote) but these were all previously released on ABBA's Spanish album "ABBA Oro - Grandes Exitos" (ABBA Gold - Greatest Hits). Nice to have all the same.

It's on the DVD companion disc where the real gems lie. There are a total of 97mins of video footage here and any film footage of ABBA is eagerly sought after by ravenous fans. The largest chunk is the 1-hour long Swedish documentary "Abba-Dabba-Doo" charting ABBA's rise and the lives and early careers of its members. The documentary includes complete promo-clips (music videos) of "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "When I Kissed The Teacher", "Dancing Queen", "My Love, My Life" and "Tiger", as well as live performances of "Dum Dum Diddle" and "Why Did It Have To Be Me". The clip of "Dancing Queen" is similar to the one on ABBA's "Definitive Collection" DVD but with slightly poorer video and audio quality. "When I Kissed The Teacher" uses the same video as on the "Definitive Collection" but comes with a slightly different earlier mix. The other promo-clips are newly released to DVD and I especially liked this version of "Knowing Me, Knowing You" with ABBA on their yacht sailing around the Stockholm archipelago. Personally I preferred it to the official version found on the "Definitive Collection". The clip of "My Love, My Life" is simply exquisite. The song is one of the most touching and understated that ABBA ever wrote. Agnetha's singing is angelic and she looks the perfect image of an angel; a broken-hearted angel singing her grief away. "Dum Dum Diddle" has the girls looking adorably sexy in their full-length, body-hugging, white jumpsuits. "Why Did It Have To Be Me" has the whole group dressed in matching white satin kimonos. In both live performances you see the sheer energy and professionalism that they conveyed on stage. It's also refreshing to hear the members speaking extensively in Swedish for a change. Agnetha especially was never comfortable in English, flawless as her diction was. She was always the most reticent. Here she is much more voluble and expressive in her interviews.

Following the "Abba-Dabba-Doo" documentary, there are several stand-alone music-clips, news reports and interviews. We see the first public performnce of "Dancing Queen" on Germany's Musikladen TV program. With its headache-inducing throbbing disco lights and garish colours, it's my least favourite clip here. The live performance of "Fernando" on Britain's "Top of the Pops" is excellent. It is well sung and well recorded and the picture from the BBC archives looks splendid. The girls are wearing lovely flowing white dresses with tiny floral decorations reminiscent of traditional Scandinavian costumes. Absolutely charming. The clip for "Happy Hawaii" is a cartoon showing ABBA flying off to the tropical islands for a holiday. The "Dancing Queen" recording session is self-recommending. It is the only filmed recording session ABBA ever made. They also sing different lyrics and try out different arrangements of the song. In the news reports and interviews, one question that they kept being asked was why, after triumphantly conquering the rest of the world, they still couldn't penetrate the American market. Their bemused reply: "Maybe Americans don't watch TV."

The news reports are followed by two vintage "Arrival" commercials. This is followed by the International Sleeve Gallery which showed just how widespread ABBA's popularity was in its heyday, with albums from England, to the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, Australia, Mexico and Brazil. Of course their greatest prize was America and this album marked the peak of their career there, when "Dancing Queen" became their first song ever to reach No.1 in the USA.

The sound on the DVD is in Dolby 2.0 Digital Stereo. Very good for its vintage and source. All the material come with optional subtitles in 7 languages including English, Spanish and French. I'm not a fan of paperboard fold-out digipacks as they're fragile and easily damaged but these do look very good, with glossy high quality photos of the ever-photogenic group printed everywhere. There is an excellent 24-page booklet with a fine essay on ABBA's career up to "Arrival" and the making of "Abba-Dabba-Doo", with a generous selection of photos, again of very high quality, adorning every page. An altogether excellent tribute album.

PS: Regarding the price - Amazon initially was asking $44 for this "Import". No discounts! They then dropped the price to $30 and finally to $21. Except for America, this 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is widely available in practically every country around the world. Tesco's Supermart in Britain sells it for the equivalent of just $16. It's available from CD-WOW (UK) from just $14. In Singapore it's selling for $20. In Australia you can get it for $25. All editions are the same. The DVD is Region 0 (playable worldwide) and all versions are in standard NTSC format. There is no reason for Amazon or Universal to charge American customers the unconscionable price of $44 or even $30 for this album.

3 out of 5 stars still a desirable purchase..........2007-03-03

For those who are after this for the higher resolution audio, (virtually no noise reduction) bonus tracks, the bonus dvd, go on...splurge! but, if you still have the 2001 remasters, where noise reduction was used and edits to correct analog era glitches were more flawless than the 2006 30th anniversary edition, you may want to pass...

5 out of 5 stars Arrival has finally Arrived!.......2007-01-09

I'm what one would call a hard-core ABBA fan. I own several copies of ABBA's ARRIVAL already on vinyl, cassette and CD so it would take something truly special for me to get excited about yet another reissue. Even this CD's "BONUS" tracks I already own, and although it's nice to have them included on one CD in remastered, this day and age of IPod makes such a hindrance of not having every song on one collection a moot point. No, it's the DVD that has me excited.

There are 9 never before released video tracks on this DVD and any ABBA fan should be eager to purchase this "re-issue" for the DVD tracks alone. The tracks are:

01. ABBA-DABBA-DOOO!! A swedish special on ABBA's then upcoming album ARRIVAL. I own this special already on a poor quality bootleg but the difference here is not only the pristine quality of the special, but the fact that there are English subtitles. Yay!!! Now I know what it is that they were talking about. A real treat. Bootleg copy be gone!

02. DANCING QUEEN (Musikladen, Radio Bremen) The first ever public viewing of ABBA singing their hit "Dancing Queen". Again, I'm glad to be able to replace my unofficial copy with the real thing.

03. FERNANDO (Top of the Pops, BBC) I'm not a huge fan of this song but it sure is nice to have an official clip of the group singing this other than the official music video.

04. HAPPY HAWAII (Fremantle Media) This demo version of the song "Why Did It Have to Be Me" actually received an animated video to accompany it. It's nothing too spectacular, but I had never seen it before, didn't know of its existence, and even though the quality of it isn't mint (parts of it really show its age), I'm glad to have it in my collection.

05. DANCING QUEEN RECORDING SESSION (Mr. Trendsetter, Svt) A must have. Again I've only seen this before in poor quality bootleg recordings and it's nice to have it in superior quality. Also, it gives the viewer insight into what went into recording the song "Dancing Queen", a song that I confess I had grown indifferent to due to its constant replay through the years. Expect to have your appreciation of the song renewed upon viewing.

06. ABBA IN LONDON, NOVEMBER 1976 (Young Nation, 1976) ABBA again promoting their then upcoming release ARRIVAL. Totally awesome.

07. ABBA'S 1976 SUCCESS - NEWS REPORT (Rapport, Svt) A news report on ABBA's success with Arrival. Very interesting to see, especially since I didn't know of its existence.

08. ARRIVAL TELEVISION COMMERCIAL I (UK)

09. ARRIVAL TELEVISION COMMERCIAL II (UK) This is just what it says it is. It's neat to view and one can imagine how the public felt at the time while anticipating the release of this awesome piece of music.

10. INTERNATIONAL SLEEVE GALLERY A nice collection of sleeves of ARRIVAL and its various single releases from around the world. Not a necessity but it's nice to compare what other countries had as single releases.

So there you have it. Any of you ABBA fans who feel that they can pass on this latest ARRIVAL re-release have no idea what you're missing. And who's to say the DVD content will ever be re-released in the future? This may be the only opportunity to ever own these. I highly recommend getting it.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth the Purchase, Even if You Already Have the Original Album........2006-12-30

"Arrival" is one of ABBA's most loved and acclaimed original albums so it isn't surprising that it was re-released (again) and loaded with extra tracks and a bonus DVD.

First the album:

Boasting 4 of ABBA's biggest international hits; this 1976 gem is consistently good. The songs are clever, well written, ingeniously and immaculately sung and the melodies are memorial. Several have become ABBA classics. I will start off with the hits first.

"Dancing Queen" is one of ABBA's biggest international hits reaching #1 in the UK, #1 in the US and #2 in Canada. This song features some amazing piano work by Benny, great orchestrations, solid vocal harmonies and one of the most infectious melodies ever written.

"Knowing Me Knowing You" was another massive international hit. It peaked at #1 in the UK, #2 in Canada and #14 in the US. Considered by many to be one of ABBA's finest songs, it overflows with emotion and creativity. Gotta love its trademark "a-ha's".

"Money, Money, Money" is a change of musical style for ABBA. The song showcases Frida's lovely lower register and is very theatrical in style. The song reached #3 in the UK and became a minor US hit peaking at #56. It also topped the charts in several territories.

"Fernando" wasn't originally a part of the studio album (it was included in some editions released in certain territories). During the 90's when ABBA's entire catalogue was re-issued, "Fernando" was included as a bonus track (which is fitting considering the single was released in 1976, the same year the album was released). It was originally written for Frida for her album "Frida Insam". The song came out so well that they decided to rework the lyrics and release it as an ABBA single shortly there after becoming a big hit in almost every territory. "Fernando" was "technically" ABBA's first single to reach #1 in the US since it topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts for 2 weeks (their first out of two US AC chart-toppers, the second would be "The Winner Takes it All" in 1981). It would eventually climb to #13 on the singles charts. The single also reached #1 in the UK and #2 in Canada (#1 AC chart).

Aside from the hits, there are several songs in "Arrival" that are just as melodic and showcase the fine talents of this group. "When I Kissed the Teacher" is the opening track and it's one of my favorite ABBA songs (it's also one of Benny's favorites). The song opens with an acoustic guitar and the girl's voices. Within seconds, the song builds and takes form exploding into a cleverly written ditty with glorious back-up vocals and harmonies. Agnetha also adds her usual vocal beauty and fire into her 2 solos. You will really appreciate this song if you listen to it using good quality earphones.

Agnetha's other solo "My Love, My Life" is another highlight which showcases the gorgeous instrument of the songs lead singer. It's also one of ABBA's most heart-felt songs and in my opinion, it's on the same level as "The Winner Takes it All" and "SOS"; a truly beautiful ballad.

"That's Me" is another under-rated gem that features both women on lead vocals. This pleasant song has intricate vocal harmonies, a great melody and some clever back-up vocals. ABBA always found witty ways of adorning even their simplest songs as evidenced here.

Other highlights include the charming and under-appreciated "Dum Dum Diddle" (despite the lyrics it has a great melody), "Why Did it Have to Be Me (a duet with Bjorn and the girls), "Tiger" (an ABBA tune with an edge, great drum work on this one) and the Celtic, lyric-less "Arrival".

The bonus tracks are also great. "Happy Hawaii" (an earlier version of "Why Did it Have to Be Me") is included and is a fantastic song in itself. The Swedish and Spanish versions of "Fernando" are also included and both sound stupendous. The Spanish versions of "Dancing Queen" (La Reina Del Baile") and "Knowing Me Knowing You" ("Conociendome, Conociendote") are also welcome additions, especially for us Spanish speaking fans.

This album did big chart business internationally. It was massive in Canada where it reached the Top 10 of the album charts and along with their first "Greatest Hits" album, became one of the biggest albums of the 70's. It also reached #1 in the UK staying at the top for several weeks. In the US, "Arrival" became ABBA's first record to reach the Top 40 of the album charts, peaking at #20 and was certified Gold by the RIAA.

This Deluxe Re-packaging also includes a DVD packed with some very interesting material, the best being "Abba-Dabba-Doo"; an hour long television special ABBA did to promote their new album. The documentary features several promo-clips; "When I kissed The Teacher", "Dancing Queen", "Knowing Me Knowing You", "Tiger", "My Love My Life" and 2 live performances; "Dum Dum Diddle" and "Why Did it Have to Be Me".

The DVD also includes a great live performance of "Fernando" taken from "The Top of the Pops" and a live performance of "Dancing Queen" (mimed to a backing-track). Other interesting features are the inclusion of an animated promo clip of "Happy Hawaii", a brief behind-the scenes look at the girls recording "Dancing Queen" and 2 commercials for "Arrival" from 1976.

Overall, a great purchase for any ABBA fan. I just hope they give this treatment to all of ABBA's original albums, even if it means having to re-purchase them again.

Fans across Europe were thought to be left out when the A-Teens released their third album, 'Pop Til You Drop' in the United States. Not only is Europe getting a chance to hear the third album, they are getting much better songs as well! 'New Arrival' is a must for any A-Teens' fan and should put them on the spot as teen sensations!

1. Floorfiller - Taken from PTYD, this is an awesome dance track. Dhani's vocals are amazing and I love the part when they say "Play that funky music" (5/5)
2. Have A Little Faith In Me - I could have sworn this was supposed to be released as a single, but it doesn't matter because it's awesome! It's a little more laid back than there usual songs, but it's great nonetheless! (5/5)
3. Shame, Shame, Shame - A nice cover but a little repetitive. Usually something I skip. (3/5)
4. Let Your Heart Do All The Talking - Eh. I wasn't too thrilled having it back on here and I was even more angry when I saw it was on their Greatest Hits album. This song is just way too boring for me. Has no momentum whatsoever. (2/5)
5. Perfect Match - The song is great, but the album version is a tad weak compared to its rockier sounding radio edit. Still nice tough. (4/5)
6. The Letter - One of my favorite covers from them. Yes the lyrics are repetitive but the way they sing in such a dark harmony is amazing! Awesome! This should have been a single (5/5)
7. Cross My Heart - Nice Latin-type song written by Marie. She never ceases to amaze me with her flourishing writing ability. Great song to dance to. (5/5)
8. In The Blink of An Eye - Wow! Two back to back songs written by Marie! This acoustic ballad is a pop gem! Great harmonies all the way around! (6/5)
9. School's Out - Another song taken from PTYD. I personally think the album could have done without this. There are so many other better covers on this album that overshadow this one. (2/5)
10. Closer To Perfection - I loved this on PTYD and I love it here! Awesome euro beats and great lyrics. (Back in the light getting over you, now I got it together, I'm stronger than ever!) (6/5)
11. Shangri-La - Amit takes a stab at songwriting and he does pretty well. This is the type of song you listen to with the car top dropped down cruising near the beach. Very relaxing. (4/5)
12. One Night In Bangkok - THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR GREATEST HIT! This song is mezmerizing! Dhani rapping? Who knew! Best cover they have ever done (and that includes the whole ABBA Generation album!) (10/5)
13. Can't Help Falling In Love - A nice mellow bonus track to end the album. Another cover, but still nice. (4/5)
14. Heartbreak Lullaby - I was thrilled when I saw this was on here, but I am not too thrilled it's the ballad version. Granted it ends the album nicely, the Ray Hedges 7" Version blows this one out of the water! (4/5)

Lucky me, my "New Arrival" also featured 10 tracks from Teen Spirit, making this one of the best albums ever. If you got an itch for pop music, I suggest you scratch it with this pop masterpiece!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-04-12

A*Teens, the popular Swedish teen group, may not have the best voices in the world, but they sure have some catchy songs. All of them for the most part have a good beat, an energetic chorus, and cute lyrics.

1. Floorfiller - This is a great song to dance to. The beat is great, and the tune rocks. 10/10
2. Have A Little Faith In Me - This is a pretty good song. It's not their best, but it's a moderatly good listen. 7/10
3. Shame Shame Shame - I don't like this song at all. It seems very scrambled. The chorus is just the band screaming "Shame Shame Shame!" 2//10
4. Let Your Heart Do All the Talking - This is a good song. Cool beat, good lyrics. I like it. 8/10
5. A Perfect Match - This track is incredibly catchy. It's upbeat, fun, has a great tune, and cute lyrics. Great. 10/10
6. The Letter - This song is...interesting. It seems very blues, with a pop twist. The chorus is fun. 7/10
7. Cross My Heart - This song is good. The South American intro is a great addition. 8.5/10
8. In the Blink of an Eye - This track sounds like exactly what a teenager would sing. The song isn't great until the chorus, where it picks up. 7/10
9. School's Out - This song is all around fun. The beat is great. It's one of my favorites. 9/10
10. Closer to Perfection - This song is just ok. It's got a pretty good chorus, but is weak all of the rest of the time. 6.5/10
11. Shangri La - This one is also...interesting. I don't love it, but don't hate it either. 6/10
12. One Night In Bangkok - I like this song. The intro is great. 8/10
13. Can't Help Falling In Love - This is one of the better songs on the album. It's got the nicest tune. 9/10
14. Heartbreak Lullaby - This song sounds really sappy. It's nice, though at the same time. 8/10

Overall, this is a good pop disk. If you're a fan of Britney or Hilary, this CD is for you. Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection, Amazing Ensemble!.......2006-03-30

This set is an absolute gem, and for two reasons: First, because it is so rare and hard to come across; Second, because the quality of the music is at such a high level. This 5 CD SET ought to be part of every collection of fine music. Christopher Hogwood is one of the finest conductors of Baroque music that I've ever heard. The included rendition of Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" is the best recording I'v heard. As well, this set includes the complete "Four Seasons," which, while not exceptional, are quite satisfactory. This is a must own set for high quality recording collectors.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2004-07-18

highly recommended by antonio-vivaldi dot org along with Pinnock's version.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed these CDs & would highly recommend their purchase........1998-11-19

A must have for anyone who enjoys Baroque Music!

This would also be a great buy for those who are interested in Classical Music but are wondering where to begin.
