3 out of 5 stars Mannfred Mann and the Earth Band are not the same!.......2007-01-23

Mannfred Mann's Earth Band formed in 1971 and is a later incarnation of Mannfred Mann.

For the "charming original" of "The Mighty Quinn" get Mannfred Mann's Greatest Hits instead. I prefer the version here; it's from the "Watch" album.

The Earth Band had a lot of hit or miss material in the late '70's and '80's. I still drag out "Angel Station" from time to time and play a couple tracks from it, but I'd skip it unless you have time and money to blow to mine for the good stuff.

Get "Roaring Silence" and "Watch" and you've pretty much got their best.

4 out of 5 stars Live track spoils CD .......2006-11-10

This is a greatest hits CD, only problem with it is that this has a live track on the CD that is not stated on the back of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-02-17

This is a great 'Best Of' recording. Great career spanning moments captured here, and full length versions!

3 out of 5 stars Very mistitled album, hardly the best of MMEB........2005-09-08

When I ordered this CD ages ago, it was the only Manfred Mann's Earth Band CD available here in the States. When it arrived, I was horrified to discover that as a "Best Of", it completely skips the first five MMEB albums, focusing instead on the "hits" from the later era of the band. How they could call this the best, when they completely ignore the classic "Solar Fire" album? Nothing from "The Good Earth", nothing from "Messin", "Glorified Magnified" nor their self-titled debut. If you can get past those glaring omissions, the songs that are here are all good. MMEB never really released a bad album between 1972 and 1980, so you can't go wrong with any of the material from that era. This is a nice collection for their biggest hits and it's usually very cheap, so definitely worth a listen. However, for the real deal, skip this and just buy "Solar Fire", "Nightengales & Bombers", and "The Good Earth". Those are the classics. Anyway, this is completely mistitled and almost criminally misleading. Not the best by a long shot. Buy and learn at your own risk.

Album Description

After riding the worldwide pop music charts for over a decade, Manfred Mann created an even larger chapter in rock music history with his Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Created at the height of album rock radio, Manfred Mann's Earth Band landed their first three albums on the charts as they increased their loyal following throughout concert halls in the United States. 1974 proved to be a pivotal year for the band as they released their biggest selling album at that time with Solar Fire. Originally released in the States with the international hit single "Joybringer" (based around Holst's Planets Suite), this album has stood the test of time and is regarded as one of the band's strongest efforts ever.

Aside from the thematic approach of rocking tracks like the title song "Solar Fire" and "Darkness, From The Beginning", this album really gained a whole new audience with the epic Bob Dylan remake of "Father Of Day, Father Of Night." This ten-minute anthem would go on to be one of Mann's most respected and most articulate works of this era. The fans dug it and have gone on to make this album one of their most enduring of the Manfred Mann's Earth Band diverse catalog.

By popular demand, Friday Music's good friends at Creature Music are proud to present another installment in the Manfred Mann's Earth Band Re-Masters series with the classic Solar Fire. Originally released on Polydor in 1974, this amazing album hasn't seen the light of day in North America for many years until now. Aside from the great songs that you already know, Manfred has gone back into the vaults and found an unreleased alternate 45 edit of "Father Of Day, Father Of Night", as well as the aforementioned international hit single of "Joybringer" which was never featured on the European vinyl release. As always, Mann and Creature Music team have overseen the entire process of remastering the original recordings and artwork restoration, maintaining the importance of this timeless classic and the other CD's in this exclusive series. As you will hear with this following recording, this was the start of something big for Mann & Company as decades of million sellers and hit recordings would follow the lead created by the fantastic Solar Fire.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Replacing my well-worn vinyl copy.......2006-06-07

Despite the long delay and higher price, I went ahead and ordered this from Amazon so I can replace the record I have had since I was in college. I don't know why Joybringer is listed as a "bonus track" when it was included on the original LP, but as long as it's on the CD I'll be happy. I can't recommend this music highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars a timeless classic.......2006-05-07

I just recently repurchased this album, and I am absolutely thrilled with the great sounds on it. When I was a kid back in 74 I used to love it, but then it disappeared, like so many things... The musicianship is great, every song develops into great musical expression, interesting guitar and organwork, phantastic. I am sometimes reminded of Gentle Giants contemporary music. Get it if you see it.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and forgotten but great music.......2005-10-11

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, This is agreat album. The Dylan cover Father,,, is worth all the space it takes up and Circle, Pluto, the title track and most of all Joybringer are classic. Manfred Mann might have better songs in his bag but no better album than this one.

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked prog album of considerable quality.......2004-11-30

A fine 1974 progressive rock album loosely, pretentiously and comically echoing Holst's Planets Suite. I recommend to fans of the ilk and era.

5 out of 5 stars Great workout tunes.......2007-05-10

I have the LP and grew up on this in college. I also found this to be a great workout set ! Fast moving up until the near the end. Manfred Mann did the best job on his version of "Spirits in the Night" IMHO. Definately a must have for 70s collections.

5 out of 5 stars Spirits In The Night.......2007-03-31

Bruce did a great job on this song, But Manfred Mann took it to another level. The same level as B.B.T.L.

5 out of 5 stars manfred mann at his best!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27

this was the prelude to the blockbuster "the roaring silence"
which I feel was the breakthru lp. The line-up was the same
on both. Both hit singles are spingsteen covers and better
than bruce could have hoped for. My favorite cut is the 3rd
cut "quittin' time". The haunting guitar solo is one of my
all time favorites. These guys can really jam. I have always
liked Manfred Mann but this was there best.

5 out of 5 stars mann am i glad i rediscovered this album........2005-11-08

i was recently going thru my old cassettes and found this album. i played it and WOW! the 70's came back with a bang.
on my 7.1 surround this album totally blew me away. buy it b4 it's gone.

5 out of 5 stars this album defines space rock.......2005-06-25

this is easily one of the top (prog) rock albums i've listened to (though it took some time for it to grow on me) and easily rivals the roaring silence as mann's best work. throughout the album the format of song followed by instrumental is maintained, which only reflects the instrumental capabilities of the band members (mick rogers is easily one of the most underrated guitar players in rock music). the album opens with a bang with springsteen's spirits in the night and what a cover it is! mann apparently is at his best when re-interpreting the songs of others, for the other highlight of the album is the cover of joan armatrading's visionary mountains where mick rogers unleashes one of the most expressive guitar solos i've ever heard. the instrumentals are not fillers but well composed/performed pieces of music which fits perfectly with the mood of the album. the mood and the atmosphere of this album defines space rock!

    Album Description

It's difficult to imagine a solid follow-up to a platinum plus recording like The Roaring Silence, but in 1978, Manfred Mann's Earth Band delivered a very consistent and enjoyable effort known simply as Watch.

With the same line-up from the previous stellar effort, Mann and Co. deliver one of their most important efforts which yielded an international hit with Robbie Robertson's "Davy's On The Road Again." Certain to move an audience to their feet, tracks like "Chicago Institute" and "Martha's Madmen" have all gone on to become modern day classics which are still performed to this day by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.

1978's Watch has gone on to be their most successful album worldwide. You can see why after listening to incredible songs like "Circles" and the newly revamped version of Bob Dylan's "Mighty Quinn."

All in all, Watch is a very fine album which has stood the test of time, as the most articulate of Manfred Mann's Earth Band fans would certainly agree. For this new 2007 remastered edition, the nice folks at Creature Music and Mann himself have gone back to the vaults and have delivered four bonus tracks!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars wow...thorough retrospective...........2007-01-12

considering Manfred Mann was much more of a chart success in the UK, this collection has all the hits a US audience will ever need, including Do Wah Diddy, The Mighty Quinn, and the full length 7 minute cut of Blinded by the Light. It also has some of the more minor radio hits of the late 70s and early 80s by the band, including Runner--which is, surprisingly, an edit that is a minute shorter than the LP version. The hard to come by Lies (through the 80s) is here as well. The only glaring omission is the song Make the World Go Round, another of his pseudo-synthpop tracks from the 80s era of music. While most of the music is broken into separate discs, 60s on CD 1, 70-80s on disc 2, there are also some odd newer recordings, like a 1997 cover of the new wave track "Pleasure and Pain," originally recorded by the Divinyls in the early 80s.

The mastering is excellent--but there are absolutely NO liner notes past the general track information. You'd think with such a career spanning set there would be some brief history inside.

      Album Description

Immediately after Solar Fire became the ground breaking album from MMEB, the concert stage became their home. Countless tours across the world and accolades from the fans and press were commonplace for this tireless outfit. With years of experience at the helm, Manfred went back into the studio and created The Good Earth in 1974.

Filled with ecological themes, hard rocking progressive rhythms, and the artistry of Mann, The Good Earth was another chapter in their history, which was about to make an amazing feat over the next couple of albums.

Gary Wright's title cut, Give Me The Good Earth, went on to become a rock radio staple and gave this band a coveted space on play lists across the globe. Prior to more space-rock oriented efforts and other acts emulation of MMEB, this band was well ahead of their time with the use of the Moog and Arp synthesizers. Prog-rockers will hear the formula throughout this album and get a thrill from tracks like the single "Earth Hymn Part 2" and "Launching Place."

Mick Rodgers is featured proudly on the ballad "Be Not To Hard." Great lyrics and anthem-like qualities make this one of the more lasting songs on this fifth effort from Mann and co.

For the 2007 edition, Mann and the good people at Creature Music in London have found three bonus tracks, plus you get a wonderful remastering job, complete with unseen photos and detailed notes about the session.

The Good Earth by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, its first release in North America after many years, is available once again. Cheers!

          Album Description

Manfred Mann's Earth Band glided quite easily into the record charts and radio playlists with a very fine offering in 1980 with Chance. Produced by Manfred and his associate producer Trevor Rabin, Chance highlighted the ever fantastic vocals of Chris Thompson with the solid return of Mick Rodgers on guitar and new drummer Pat King. In addition to these fantastic musicians, Trevor Rabin, Robbie McIntosh (Pretenders, Paul McCartney) and Geoff Whitehorn (Procol Harum) all chimed in with some very incredible artistry.

Most noted for the big hit "Lies (Through The 80's)", Chance offered a more high-tech pop version of MMEB with some very prominent keyboard work derived from their most talented founder and namesake. Manfred Mann himself wrote five of the nine songs on this project and made sure he nodded once again to his good friend Bruce Springsteen with a hit interpretation of "For You."

A very enjoyable effort, Chance is a definitely a rewarding experience for the listener. With this latest 2007 edition, Manfred and the good folks at Creature Music went into the vaults and located four bonus tracks, including the rare track " A Fool I Am".

While spending over a year and a half recording this album, Mann and Co. made sure the final result was filled with great hooks and in your face artistry. Manfred Mann's Earth Band truly gave the 80's decade a fantastic album for their worldwide audience to appreciate for a lifetime of memories.

          Album Description

After a sensational run of worldwide pop hit singles like "Do Wah Diddy" and "The Mighty Quinn", Manfred Mann was obviously no stranger to the chart gods. As the new decade began, with the emergence of underground rock radio, Mann created a new chapter in his highly successful career with the arena rock favorites Manfred Mann's Earth Band. In 1972, Mann delivered the goods with their debut Prog-Rock classic Manfred Mann's Earth Band. At the time, along with Manfred Mann, the band consisted of Chris Slade later of AC/DC, The Firm (Drums), Colin Pattenden (Bass) and Mick Rogers (Lead Guitar/ Vocals). This bold venture furthered his artistry to new heights, with the introduction of various keyboard instruments throughout all of their recordings. One particular instrument, the Mini Moog, would go on to become his trademark sound in his recordings for years to come. This first release captured some very memorable tracks like the single "Living Without You", a US hit written by Randy Newman, the Bob Dylan song "Please Mrs. Henry" and Dr. John's classic "Jump Sturdy."

Now, through Creature Music , Friday Music is proud to present Manfred Mann's Earth Band re-issue series with this first installment. Originally released on Polydor in 1972, this is the first time this album has been available in quite sometime in North America. This classic reissue should make the avid Mann collectors rejoice. The Manfred Mann's Earth Band would go on to be applauded by critics and rock music programmers alike, but more importantly, it would establish the Manfred Mann's Earth Band as one of the most enduring rock acts of all time.

          5 out of 5 stars A True 1970's Rock Gem.......2007-06-13

Do a casual search of the Internet for reviews of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's eponymous 1972 debut album and you'll get the full gamut of conclusions from: superlative, lost treasure, criminally underrated, one of the best of the 70's (Robert Christgau, All Music Guide, and the above product description/editorial by Amazon) to: terrible, dull, boring, plodding junk, is this the best they could do (Mike Saunders of Rolling Stone). The truth, I'm happy to report after repeated listenings, is that the positive professional reviews are far closer to the mark than the negative review(s).

This is a progressive rock record of the first order, ranking right up there with Dark Side of the Moon. Take a listen to Mann's "Tribute" and you may wonder where Pink Floyd derived some of their inspiration for Wish You Were Here. Keep listening to "Tribute", an original instrumental by Manfred Mann, and you'll also hear strains of the haunting blues-inflected instrumentals that gave Fleetwood Mac their distinctive early 70's sound. Why this record received hardly any radio air-play even in the waning days of so-called free form radio, was because it was overshadowed in early 1972 by more "heavy" and hit-laden records released by Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer which at the time sounded flashy, but, now sound overblown, at times pretentious and just plain dated. And this is coming from a fan of all three of those bands. Mann's reworking of Bob Dylan's "Please Mrs. Henry" sounds like Abbey Road era Beatles and it is the definitive cover of that Dylan song. Manfred Mann took the best elements of jazz improvisation, a knack for inventively re-interpreting others' songs (Randy Newman, Dr. John, and Bob Dylan), and blended these ideas into a unique if somewhat quirky rock mix. "Prayer" nicely showcases Mann's keyboard virtuoso, Mick Rogers' razor sharp yet fluid guitar fills and solos, and Chris Slade's creative yet rock solid drum back beat. And confounding expectations right to the end, "I'm Up and I'm Leaving" is a pleasant sounding little tune about moving away from the country and going to the big city. Released at a time when the hip thing was to sing about moving to the country (Elton John's Honky Cat), this was a clearly satirical send-up of the hippie back to nature ethos like The Who's "Going Mobile". Air conditioned gypsies for sure, Manfred Mann never took themselves too seriously, but they did take their music seriously and if you want to hear quite possibly the best of British early 70's progressive rock, and just a brilliantly conceived and executed rock album, this the Manfred Mann's Earth Band album to start with. MMEB never repeated themselves so uniquely or briliantly on any of their fine subsequent records, and this Cohesion digital remaster captures the sound of the recordings clearly and brilliantly. Enjoy it and rock on!
