Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

Outlandos D'Amour is a product of the late-'70s British punk scene, but the Police were never really punks. The album lacks the class-conscious awareness that fueled early Clash albums or the angry, antimusical nihilism of the Sex Pistols. The material, although constructed with guitar, bass, and drums, often at tempos that would never be matched in their later studio recordings, stands apart. Andy Summers' guitar textures are here more traditional and without their later ethereal quality, but his chord choices on "Roxanne," for example, or his expansive solo lines on "So Lonely" would have baffled most of the burgeoning punk guitar school. So, too, would Stewart Copeland's drumming, enriched as it is by a multinational upbringing and stage experience in the last gasps of the progressive-rock movement. The rhythms of reggae are woven into the music and Sting's vocals pay conscious tribute to Bob Marley. The songs are mostly about love, or a lack of personal connection, and are frequently obsessive; the hits alone are worth the price of the album. --Al Massa

Britain's Police got its start in the late-'70s days of punk, but the trio's background in jazz, fusion, and rock belied the punky image suggested by the band's dyed-blond hair. Indeed, where many punks were inspired amateurs, the Police (Sting on bass and vocals, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums) were accomplished players who quickly developed a sophisticated approach to the power-trio format. Still, this debut album is filled with growing pains, with a handful of tracks far more interesting than the rest. The Police's primary stylistic innovation was to put the pulse of reggae into a rockier context, a strategy evident in the up-tempo "Can't Stand Losin' You" as well as in the band's first hit single, "Roxanne," a love song to a prostitute that would remain Sting's best- known tune until he wrote "Every Breath You Take." To this day, the first two notes of "Roxanne" are among the most recognizable melodic hooks in contemporary music. --John Milward

One of their best.......2007-06-13

Okay, don't try to tell me this is a punk album. The only real punk song is "Next to You", which I love. "Peanuts" is sort of a punk song, but that weird instrumental break ain't punk. No, this is reggae, mon, or at least reggae-rock. I mean, how else would you classify "Roxanne"? Damn, that is one good song. No wonder it was such a big hit! It's got the riff, the catchy chorus to end all catchy chorus, the classic "hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold" theme. Boom, boom, boom. Classic. And I think "Can't Stand Losing You" is even better, managing to be depressing, funny, catchy and danceable all at once. Again, it's reggae-rock, leaning towards reggae. And what's "So Lonely" but pure reggae and nothing but? Well, reggae with jazz drumming. Naturally, this reggae-rock stuff is the best, but some of it is downright abominable: the anthem "Born in the '50s"; the immature "Be My Girl/Sally" (which, as it has been noted, is a love song to a friggin' doll - I think it's the most despised song in the Police's catalogue, either that or "Mother"), and the weird experiment "Maskowhatever Tango". In truth, you'd have to get rid of both "Born in the '50's and "Be My Girl/Sally" to bring his up any higher, but so what? Quite good. Maybe the group's best. Maybe not.

Love the album.... my only disappointment... casing is cardboard.
Not a plastic case as one expects.

As a fan of the band waaaaaay back when I was in 10th grade (1980), I'm writing this review as the band experiences its renaissence ahead of its 30th Anniversary World Tour. Most will likely focus on the final recording "Synchronicity". I prefer to start at the beginning.

Outlandos d'Amour landed quietly in the US as the second wave of punk-infuenced British bands began their invasion. It's hard to remember, but The Police were contemporaries of Elvis Costello, The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Ramones, and The Jam, and this album was released stateside at a time when Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Who were the reigning Kings of British Rock. No one knew it, but everything in music was about to change.

In contrast to the hyper-produced operatic sounds of mainstream FM "AOR" hard rock, the police were a spare, stripped-down, reggae-influence trio made up of a frenetic American drummer, and two Brits - both jazz afficionados. Their sound captured the energy of the emerging punk scene, but if their arrangement seemed simple it was so only to let the elegant simplicity of their songcraft shine through.

Amidst the roar of British Arena rock, The Police landed in America, playing small clubs like NYC's now defunct CBGB, to even smaller audiences. And while this was going on, like a hushed whisper -- a single song began climbing American radio charts. A plaintive, tragic tale of a boy's idealistic love for a prostitute. That song eventually became one of Rock music's most instantly recognized classics: Roxanne.

With that one song, The Police pried open the American radio audience and made way for the eventual torrent that became "New Wave". As such, the band, and their debut album deserve recognition as a defining influence on the landscape of modern music, every bit as much as Nirvana or The Beatle's for their seminal works.

There are few other memorable songs here that anyone other than an ardent fan would appreciate. Other than Roxanne, only the tongue-in-cheek, suicidal break-up song "Can't Stand Losing You" ever made it into the US charts. Still, the album flows pleasantly from start to finish, and the final cut "Mosoka Tanga", with its unintelligible lyrics, sets the listener up stylistically for the sophomore release (Regatta de Blanc) that eventually cemented the bands' now legendary success.

Police cadets and the outlaws of love.......2007-02-13

This was the sound of a brash young band born from a musical scene that they had a very marginal tie to. Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had already done time in other groups (Copeland was a prog-rocker with Curved Air!) and Sting came from an academic background. The story goes that they cut their hair spiky and dyed themselves blond to tape a TV commercial for gum...all while working on "Roxanne." So when that punky slice of pop began to chart, the image of The Police as punks was almost accidental.

Never-the-less, "Outlandos D'Amour" was aggressive in a way that future Police albums were not. "Next To You," "So Lonely" and "Can't Stand Losing You" were big on attitude, which fans of the burgeoning punk scene fed right into. "Truth Hits Everybody" and "Next To You" had the kicking tempos that made you just want to jump. The band's three piece set-up with a minimum of additives (maybe a keyboard in "Hole In My Life" and some multi-tracked backing vocals) kept things crisp and clean. The remastering brings that into bright relief on this re-issue, and reminds us just how startlingly new this all sounded back in 1978.

However, like most new bands, all the kinks were not worked through. The silly "Sally/Be My Girl" grew tired after a few listens back then and hasn't added any charm with age. "Masoko Tango" just sounds like a jam that was tacked on to the record to increase the running time. But you do hear the elements that eventually grew into brilliance...the reggae touches that made "So Lonely" and "Roxanne" so infectious, Summers' mad guitar in "Peanuts" and Sting's ace songwriting skills. The band still had a sense of humor about themsleves at this moment - just listen to the flub that remained at the beginning of "Roxanne." In fact, delete "Sally" and you could make a strong case for "Outlandos D'Amour" as a five star album (much the same way that "Mother" is a blight on the otherwise brilliant "Synchronicity"). A debut that brimmed over with the excitement of things to come, The Police also never rocked this hard again.

Great for kids!.......2007-06-27

I'm generally not a fan of music "samplers," but opera can be tough to introduce to children. And hey--even adults played cards, ate, and talked through the recitative sections of the early operas while they waited for the next aria! So I feel that getting kids hooked on opera through great arias probably can't hurt (the next 10 years or so will determine whether I'm right or not). My 4-year-old loves this CD; it's a delight to watch her imitate Anna Moffo (the sincerest form of flattery, for sure). Highly recommended resource for introducing young kids to opera. More top picks: Siberell's Bravo! Brava! A Night at the Opera, and the Black Dog Opera Library CDs.

Mediocre Sound Quality.......2007-03-31

If you note the album was released in 1994, and includes selections from many years prior, you will understand that the quality of the sound engineering is not going to dazzle your ear.

It's a very nice collection to hum along to, but don't expect shivers down your spine as the sound quality is not sufficient to reproduce the dynamic range of these voices.

I am by no means an opera expert, but found this to be a wonderful CD. Along with the songs I already knew I liked (such as a song from Carmen,) I found many others I enjoyed. In fact, Samson et Dahlila turned out to be my favorite. If you are just getting started or at any point in your adventure of opera, I would recommend this one.

Okay But.... - a review of "The Most Famous Opera Arias".......2006-08-18

My daughter (6 y.o.) and I like opera; but sitting for two hours to watch Turandot is just not within the realm of possibilities for my 4 year old son right now... so I was looking for an opera CD for the car. He will sit and listen to short arias.

This was the first we purchased and it is okay but not great.

Problem #1 - where is Wagner. No Wagner?
Problem#2 - Elena Obraztsova - she sounds like Carmen's grandmother. Rather matronly for a vixen (imho--lol)

Three Stars. [C+] Great Price and good sound quality for the car. The operatic styles of some of the performers are antiquated and frilly sounding, but I would probably buy this CD again.

Note: We purchased and really preferred "The # 1 Opera Album". It has more selections and better artists in our opinion. Also it's a two CD set. Just something to consider.

Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

Second on my list for CDs that should be recommended for people who want to start on a long trail of Callas to the Carmen with Gedda and Prétre. This has perhaps the best excerpts of all time from Maria Callas. The 'Ritorna vincitor' and 'Una voce poco fa' are to be treasured. Any long-time Callas fan will find this CD of little to no interest, because anything they haven't heard before, there's a better, low-audio-quality version of somewhere. 4 stars for that reason.

Classic Callas.......2006-07-11

Countless assessments of Maria Callas' life and career, as well as re-issues of some of her definitive recorded performances have been fueled by the 25th anniversaary of her tragic and prophetic death alone in her Paris flat on September 16, 1977. One of those such discs, this 17 track retrospective compilation from the archives of EMI is among the best. Every character she portrays is bought to life by her incomparible ability both vocally and emotionally. Enjoy!

Although the instrumentals are nice, this CD wasn't quite what I thought it would be. For some reason I thought the songs would be sung, but instead it's all instrumental. If that's what you prefer, then you probably would enjoy this CD... I was just looking for something that included the lyrics; I wanted a collection of classic French songs sung by the original artists. This is definitely not it... guess I didn't do my homework. C'est la vie!

I purchased this CD with another CD that was strictly French Accordian music. This CD contains many French classics, but it won't remind you "street music" you actually hear in Paris. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys classic music, especially when it's French.

Folks, please read the recording data! This album does not present merely the "older Sills" of 1975. Tracks 10 to 13 were recorded in February 1961, when Sills was about three months shy of 32 years old. To hear her any younger on disc, you have to go to her splendid recording of *The Ballad of Baby Doe*, released in 1959. (If anyone knows of still earlier recordings, please holler!) So these 1961 tracks alone make the album priceless, especially since it offers vastly better sound than the slightly boomy acoustic of *Baby Doe*.

For me, the initial main attraction here was the Granados, and it was a hallelujah moment when I spotted this CD in the bins almost 10 years ago. While this disc represents the commercial first release of the *Goyescas* selections, they received limited issue around December 1963 on a holiday-bonus LP ("The Sound of Genius 1963") from the Columbia Record Club.

That LP was my introduction to Sills, and it made me fall in love with her voice. It was always a special treat to play her vocal track for those who had no idea it existed and watch their astonishment as Beverly's voice floated through sonic space like the very nightingale she sings about. It is simply some of the loveliest, most haunting singing I've ever heard. To get two additional tracks from the same recordings sessions -- especially "Estrellita" -- was an unexpected blessing.

So get this CD for the last three tracks, if nothing else (track 10 is purely orchestral). They capture Sills at a magical moment. Even if you like nothing else on the disc (and I think you'll like much more), you can claim these three special treasures for a mere pittance. How much more precious are they, now that she has gone on to sing, we pray, in other realms.

Estrellita.......2006-12-07

The incomparable Beverly Sills beautifuly sings here a true bouquet of songs in French and Spanish. A pleasure to the ear.

Estrellita is not a Spanish song as claimed by some commentators, but a Mexican one, whose author is the late Manuel M. Ponce.

She DID sing Michaela. And it's said that she also did Carmen. But if she did, she was completely miscast. She also did Aida, live-recording of her Aida is...interesting. Anyway, Sills rules in the French rep, esp. as Manon.

This is a fantastic disc and shows Beverly Sills at her interpretive best with zesty, go-for-broke vocalism that is truly wonderful to hear.

Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28

There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.

A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15

Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.

This cant be the best.......2003-04-20

Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....

TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!.......2002-11-27

True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.

Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21

This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

Music to your ears..........2007-04-05

I can't say enough about this musician. The music will sooth your soul. A must have for your car CD player, it will help you through the traffic :}

I'm a new fan to Andre Rieu. I didn't start getting into his music until I caught his Christmas special on my local PBS station last year. I found his performances highly energetic and playful which is rare in this often serious musical genre. After catching a repeat performance of "Tuscany", I decided to make the cd version my next Andre Rieu purchase. Whenever I listen to "Tuscany", I can easily see Andre Rieu performing with his orchestra. His skills as a violinist is exquisite. He is very subtle and is never out of tune. "Tuscany" begins with three of the most beautiful classical numbers I have ever heard. The beautiful orchestral melodies puts me at ease. I wished that the cd included "The Rose" (the Bette Midler tune) that can be seen on the dvd. I loved the operatic version. It would have been a nice addition to the cd. Of all the operatic numbers my favorite has to be "Ode to Joy". I have to admit though the singers have a terrible tendency to caterwaul on the songs which can be quite disconcerting for these ears. On the other hand the same can be said about a lot of opera singers as well as modern pop singers. There wasn't a single song on the cd that I didn't enjoy listening to. Andre Rieu's love for music really does shine through his music here. I hope some day I will have the opportunity to see him perform live. I don't think nothing can compare to seeing this talented artist live. Until then his cds will do nicely.

What wouldn't I give to have been enjoying this magnificent program in that beautiful square in Italy? Fantastic performance of unbelievabe quality and program choices. I wouldn't trade this DVD for anything.

Andre Rieu's Tuscany.......2007-01-10

Haunting melodies taking you to the hills of Tuscany where this concert was originally held. Plays well while travelling as well as at home.

I'm an Andre Rieu fan and can definitely review this CD as one of his best! It was well-recorded with good sound quality, and you can hear the excitement of that evening in Tuscany as you listen to this CD. I would also recommend the DVD/Video of that performance.
