The history of Southern power-pop updates itself again with this Chapel Hill band who've obviously road-tripped to Radio City more than once or twice. Summertown is perfectly titled, but its songs are situated more in the waning days of August than in the June days when the hot sun hasn't yet replaced the cool breeze. In "The Apple," a guy can't get his girlfriend to take her Walkman 'phones off to listen to his ardent declarations, while in the title track, sheets fading on a clothesline are a thinly disguised metaphor for a dying romance. This Chris Stamey-produced debut album is every bit as charming, and a little sad, as that image. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Raw Power at the Garage Level.......2003-07-18

I really loved this album. It reminded me of the old Teenage Fanclub and a little bit of the dB's as it was produced by Chris Stamey. The opening tune, "You and Me" brought chills up my neck, and brought me to a time when pop-garage-music was in my blood. The so-called adolescent slowly crept out as I listened to "The Apple". Who hadn't gotten their heartbroken, but only recovered by cranking up the headphones to hear the melodies of your favorite rock band. This is really great stuff.

If you like pop melodies with the fuzz and that undefining vocal, I suggest picking up a copy of this record. Maybe it will enlighten you or just make you sing along. The Maflies USA are indeed the Carolina sound.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary mod rock ******.......2001-02-02

These guys are musicians to watch. The Big Star / Teenage Fanclub comparisons fit, but when I hear "Down with Peter Green" I also hear some '66 Who somewhere in there too, or some early early U2....a mod and edgy Anthem to ...who knows. Great production with strange little details thrown in the mix for good measure. If you like your power pop straight up ... wonnerful wonnerful as Lawrence Welk used to say.

1 out of 5 stars Mayflies have enthusiasm and love alcohol.......2000-12-02

Actually, this album kind of stinks. Initially I thought it might be good and liked the idea of having an album from some hometown favorites, but it just does not deliver. Sorry Mayflies...but please keep up the ethusiatic trying.

5 out of 5 stars Huzzah for the Phono-graphic Record!.......2000-07-04

This is that rarest of finds; an album that teaches and guides us as well as entertains. It gives an accurate (if somewhat bleak) picture of life in central Europe in the late 1940's, and lets us know what we can do to help. The accordian work on "Maria" is masterful, as is the (unexpected) theremin solo in "NYC" (a song which is blistering in its critique of the United Nations--way to go, guys!). This album changed my life . . . for the better!

3 out of 5 stars Give it several listens.......2000-06-29

While I do agree they are poppy, I cannot say they are wimps. The lyrics are far more intelligent than Fountains of Wayne. They sing a lot of songs about girls and boredom and summer time...what's wrong with that? One reviewer commented on the fey vocals on NYC; this is true, but it's only that one song. It's not like being bludgeoned by Belle and Sebastian's wimp factor. There are great guitar riffs and harmonizing that would make this a great purchase for both powerpop and alt-country fans. The single reason that kept me from giving this 4 stars is that every song refers to summertime, it reminds me of summertime, the name of the album is Summertown...my point being, you don't want to listen to this record year round.
