Customer Reviews:
FOR S.R.V. HARDCORE FANS ONLY.......2001-06-26
This cd is bootleg quality all the way. It's listed under Lou Ann Barton but honestly the majority of the people purchasing "Thunderbroad" would problably be Stevie Ray Vaughan collectors. It was recorded in 1977 and you hear his trademark Texas guitar shuffle, which strongly complimented the big league belter - Lou Ann Barton. I found hearing them together made for interesting listening, even with the poor sound on this disc. A couple of these songs should have been put on the S.R.V. boxed set. So owning "Thunderbroad" depends on how hard core a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan you are. For the majority, spend your money on something else.
Don't believe the date on this.......2001-02-01
This CD looks like some remastered early work - it has a 1999 date on it. As much as I'd like to see Lou Ann get the money, these importers have pulled a fast one on us. These are basement recordings of outtakes and not very well composed. She has much tighter, high tech versions of several of these songs on "Read My Lips."

The classic "Hound Dog" is usually associated with Elvis Presley, but blues fans know: Presley's recording wasn't the first. That honor belongs to singer Big Mama Thornton, whose own recording of "Hound Dog" was eclipsed by Presley's. Her version is on this collection in all its glory, opening a CD of 17 killer tracks. Thornton's voice, by turns growling and richly melodic, was indeed unusual, and the spare accompaniment on Hound Dog makes it stand out all the more on songs such as "They Call Me Big Mama," "How Come," "The Big Change," "Hard Times," and "The Fish." Thornton had talent and attitude to spare, and both come through loud and clear on this essential collection. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Apples & Oranges.......2007-05-26
Why all the knockin' Elvis's version?? It sold millions and put the song on the rock & roll map. He was..is.. one of the great singers of all time.
Comparing Mama's version to Elvis's is like apples & oranges.
Mama is.. well.. great! You like her or you don't. She's got that early old time rock sound that we grew up on. Listen to her music and make up your own mind... she is one 'rockin' Mama.
just a great voice and great songs!.......2007-05-21
from the first second you put this record on it's amazing! what a woman this was!
Big Mama's Rockin' Bluesy Rhythm & Blues.......2007-01-11
Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.
HOUND DOG: THE PEACOCK RECORDINGS consists of 18 songs recorded 1952-1957 on the Peacock label (note: track 8 on Duke), some previously unreleased on US album, one (track 15) previously unreleased in the US; songs are not in chronological order. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 47:15. Booklet includes a pedestrian essay by Mary Katherine Aldin, several black & white photographs (plus an image of a poster promoting a Big Mama performance), and detailed track information (songwriters, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is excellent.
These are her early recordings, made after she started touring as a singer at age 14 (performing with - or against - "Little Esther" Phillips). She went on to record for Baytone, Kent, Mercury, Vanguard, and Arhoolie labels, where she would record "Wade in the Water" and "Ball N' Chain", the latter notably covered by Janis Joplin.
Most of these 50s recordings are made with the Johnny Otis Orchestra. "Yes, Baby" (track 8) is a duet with Johnny Ace. The music is not as much Blues as Rhythm & Blues and early Rock N' Roll. Most of the songs are up-tempo numbers.
I like this disc, but it is rather brief. I prefer "Ball `N' Chain", a collection of much Blues-ier 1960s recordings released on Arhoolie.

Best Ever.......2007-01-03
Big Mama is probably the best female blues vocalist ever. She can belt them out and swing at the same time. There is not a bad song in the bunch and the sound quality is as good as it is going to get for the era. If you don't own and Big Mama you have to get this.
Elvis is still the "King!".......2005-02-01
I will agree that "Big Mama's" version is good...But Elvis is still the "King." When I hear Elvis, I want to get up and move. His version may be an imitation, but it still kicks ass....Big Mama deserved more credit than she got...I mean the woman has soul and funk....Both versions should be appreciated for what they are- kick ass good music...But Elvis still rules in my book...

Album Description
Sharleen Spiteri & her band, Texas are back. Back with an album chock-full of gorgeous hooks & future radio anthems, an album made in a dream pop universe with key recording studios in London, Liverpool, Toronto, New York and, crucially, Glasgow. Texas have made a record that could only have emerged in 2003. It's called 'Careful What You Wish For'. Featuring collaborations with underground West London dancehall crew Suncycle, uber pop producer Trevor Horn, Liverpool studio legend Kingbird, cult drum & bass obsessive Ceri 'Sunship' Evans, the songwriter's songwriter Guy Chambers & the renowned 'Madonna Mixer' Spike Stent, 'Careful What You Wish For' is Texas' most diverse & ambitious album to date. It is the record that was brewing while their 'Greatest Hits' collection cruised to five million worldwide sales, while a hot, new guitarist was broken into the band & quickly taught the difference
Album Details

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Fantastic!.......2004-05-21
There's no doubt about it, Texas' 'Careful What You Wish For' is an amazing album. The very first Texas album I bought was 'The Hush', which I simply adore, so I knew I had to rush out and buy all the music by this relatively unknown (at least where I am) band as I could. This CD was the second of the group's albums I purchased. Upon first listen, I'll admit it, I was slightly underwhelmed. I had expected the same sound 'The Hush' had offered, and had thought I would fall in love with 'Careful What You Wish For' as soon as I hit "play". However, I did sense potential in the album, and I was well aware of the band's talent, so I kept the CD in my discman. After the second listen, I was well-aware of the gem I was lucky enough to have bought.
'Broken' has all the characteristics and makings of a hit. It's the type of song which Texas is extremely familiar with. The group is well-aware of every note that has to be hit, and every lyric needed to provoke emotion. Overall, it's a fantastic track, definitely one of the best on the album. To be perfectly honest, I was actually quite taken aback when I listened to 'Carnival Girl' for the first time. Having Kardinal Offishall contribute to the track seemed to be an odd move for a band like Texas to make. Fortunatly, the song sounds amazing. Kardinall Offishall doesn't overwhelm the track (or the album for that matter) and Texas really does have the skill to pull it all off in the end.
Tracks four through seven ('I'll See It Through', 'Where Did You Sleep', 'And I Dream', and 'Careful What You Wish For') are my absolute favorite songs off the album. All of them have amazing beats, insightful lyrics, and catchy hooks. 'Under Your Skin' and 'Another Day' are also stand-out tracks. This album is an absolute must for any Texas fan, you shouldn't even have to consider it. If you're interested in checking out some of Texas' music 'Careful What You Wish For' is probably a good place to start (although, all their albums are great, so you probably won't be disappointed). Try giving the album a second chance if you don't fall in love with it the first time around, chances are, you'll love it!
Can Texas Invade America?.......2003-12-05
Careful What You Wish For is rockier than their last two albums, but no less enjoyable. In fact, the more I listen to it the more I like it. It's quite diverse, with rock, pop, regggae influences, even a little punk. Held together by Sharleen's beautiful voice and the best pop songwriting in the business! The title track as a killer, as is Where Did You Sleep. I'm not crazy about every single song (Carosel Dub didn't strike me), but hey, that's me. Let's hope this album is the one to finally bring Texas the US recognition they so painfully deserve. The fans are still waiting!!!
Stunning variety.......2003-11-26
Be Careful What You Wish For really is a great album and a stunning showcase of this band's versatility. It contains at least 5 classic compositions, of which Telephone X is one of the best: an up-tempo number with innovative electronic infusions and a great tune.
The best dance tracks are the ragga-style Carnival Girl and its remix Carousel Dub, And I Dream, Place In My World and Broken. All of these have catchy hooks and foot-tapping rhythms. Of the slower songs, my favourites are Another Day and I'll See It Through, both moving ballads with poetic lyrics where Spiteri's voice is displayed in all its beauty.
The songs that stay closest to the familiar Texas sound are the aforementioned I'll See It Through, Another Day and the title track with its lovely piano. But overall this album is a welcome exploration of new territory, as it provides a refreshing blend of ragga, pop and dance in a set of beautiful and memorable songs.
Texas Return Revitalized.......2003-11-09
Though they've never made a dent on the American charts, Scottish band Texas are superstars throughout much of Europe, thanks in large part to their blend of roots rock, classic soul, and modern pop. While previous cd THE HUSH focused primarily on the soul equation, CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR brings together all their previous influences, while still again adding new ones. New wave seems to be the new order of the day here, evident in such tracks as "Broken", "Telephone X", and particularly "Under Your Skin"--all three sound like long-lost Blondie tracks(it's too bad Blondie couldn't come up with songs of this quality for their recent CURSE OF BLONDIE cd, whose title is self-prophecying, I'm afraid). Texas is careful not to alienate its' pop fans, though--first single "Carnival Girl" is reminiscent of previous hits "Say What You Want" and "In Our Lifetime", but is still fresh thanks to the added rhyming of Kardinal Offishall. They also go the electronic route with the gorgeously melodic "And I Dream", which is a smash waiting to happen. It goes without saying that fab frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri's typically understated vocals work wonders throughout. All in all, ranks right next to WHITE ON BLONDE as their finest moment.
MUST-HAVE.......2003-10-29
Texas is back, with one of their best albums to date.
Remarkable is that almost each track is instantly catchy. There are a couple of songs you'll never forget.
01 TELEPHONE X> It's a pity this cd starts with this track, because it's also the best song on "Careful What You Wish For". It'll probably the 3rd single (after I'll See It Through), and then also a massive hit, at least in Europe. Catchy and sexy. 10/10
02 BROKEN> After the first tunes of this songs, I had big expectations of Broken. And again it is a catchy pop song, the Texas we all know. Unfortunately Sharleen's voice doesn't come off well in the chorus. 8/10
03 CARNIVAL GIRL> Texas' music style is up-to-date with Carnival Girl as first single to compete with contemporary R&B/Hip-Hop. What an out-standing song. Kardinal Offishall really adds something to "Carnival Girl". A sunny track. I don't understand why many people don't like this song. Maybe because they are not used to hear this from Texas? 10/10
04 I'LL SEE IT THROUGH> A brilliant ballad. The second single off "Careful What You Wish For" which will surely end up somewhere high in the UK album charts around Christmas. 10/10
05 WHERE DID YOU SLEEP?> The sound accelerates with "Where Did You Sleep?". Again an amazing song: guitars, beautiful chorus... I think it would do well as a single. 9/10
06 AND I DREAM> Again guitars, again a nice chorus, this time with a disco beat... Asking if you get tired of it? No. The inverse. 9/10
07 CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR> The typical Texas song is now accompanied by piano. And, yes, again single potention. 9/10
08 BIG SLEEP> This is the only song on the cd I skip. It's a bit laid back, not even very bad, but it IS boring. I can imagine that other people will like this country song though. 6/10
09 UNDER YOUR SKIN> A strong disco beat, a beautiful voice and a whiff of melancholy make this song one of the best on "Careful What You Wish For". 10/10
10 CAROUSEL DUB> Carnival Girl - the remix. Nice to listen to for a while, not a classic song though. It barely exists of the Carousel sample featured in "Carnival Girl", completed by the singing of Suncycle (?) and Sharleen, who repeats a couple of times the words "Carnival Girl". 7/10
11 PLACE IN MY WORLD> Suddenly the pace becomes faster, a trancy beat kicks in. Sounds promising, but the chorus lets down a bit. 7/10
12 ANOTHER DAY> "Call me up and let's begin", accompanied by warm strings. A nice conclusion. 9/10
Really an amazing cd, some would say essential. Texas is a wonderful band and Sharleens voice is the best!
