3 out of 5 stars ...for a place in America.......2007-07-05

You know how the story goes. Obscure European band labors in obscurity for years. Somehow, through sheer chance, has one track (which may or may not be typical of their work) hit it stateside and rocket up the charts. Make them megastars, a household name...until their one hit dies out and they never come close to striking gold again.

Yes, before Aqua, there was the strangely similar-sounding A-ha, and this was an otherwise perfectly ordinary album where their one shining star (which I always suspected became popular mainly due to the unbelievable range on the chorus part) came from.

Not much else to say. Typical, ordinary synthpop, what I'd call "waiting room music". The singer, despite his best efforts, has some trouble with the English language. I've heard a lot worse, but it's no surprise why A-ha never could find its niche here.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a one hit wonder.......2007-05-21

a-ha is most known for "Take On Me", but that's not it. Hunting High and Low is a ten song half hour masterpiece. This is the way pop music should be done in the 80's, it's just as good as Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Welcome To the Pleasuredome".

Take On ME had a breakthrough video, it's one of those that are probally labeled by _______ Thriller as one of the greatest breakthroughs. Train Of Thought is a song that belongs in the _______ future. A lot of the songs would be the music of the future, since it was released when the world was predicted would have flying cars and the other future ____ ala the Jetsons. There is a ballad song, a dark samba beat, some rock, and a ____load of electronic sounds, but dosen't totally make it sound cheesy. You will hear it at the best times you can. This is how pop in the 80's should sound, not that ________ Bangles or the horrid hair metal. In fact, the whole cd has so much _______ atmosphere, and it never sounds polished. IT's more like a totally _______ awesome space age enivronment.

IT's a bit of a shock to any _____head like Bjorn Everfrost (you call me a poser, you get the unfair comparisons too, you ___________. Calling Squash a metalhead? For shame!), but you shouldn't just forget about it. If this band would get more credit than they deserve, then I would be fine. This is one of the most underrated pop records ever. The 80's actually wasn't too bad. Just looked bad with some of the horrible ____.

5 out of 5 stars A great debut album! .......2007-02-16

I bought the Trilogy of this, Scoundrel Days, and Stay On These Roads. So far I've only listened to Hunting High and Low and Scoundrel Days, and I'm very impressed!
I bought them because, as an artist, when I saw the music video for 'Take On Me', I just couldn't help but wanting to know more about this amazing band. This CD gave me exactly what I wanted: more fantastic music from a very talented trio!
The songs are very inspiring and sometimes a little sad, like the title track (which sounds a lot different than it does remixed on Headlines and Deadlines... I like that version better than the one on this. Oh well!) and 'Living a Boy's Adventure Tale', full of things that really make you think about life and what's surrounding you. The music in general, Magne and Pal's songwriting and instrumental skills, brings you out of this world! But then again, I do have a strong love for synthesizers and keyboards. Not to mention the angelic vocal talents of Morten! WOW! He could sing opera if he wanted to; he's that good.

Some great tracks besides the hits/singles: The Blue Sky, Living a Boy's Adventure Tale, Here I Stand and Face the Rain.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone that wants to feel inspired and witness one of the greatest (and underappreciated) bands in history, and also to fellow artists and anyone who loves great synth music. Even 22 years later...

4 out of 5 stars Where it all started.......2007-02-08

This is a great CD. Even back then they were ahead of their time. Great songs on this one. Made me love the band's music. I've been hooked for over 20 years!

5 out of 5 stars a-ha, at their finest hour.......2006-08-27

introduced back in the phils. in '85, a-ha music such as "take on me", "love is reason" & "the sun always shine in tv" were the staples of new wave dance parties, such parties won't be complete without any a-ha music. but what appeals to me even back then was the diversity of their sound, ballads like hunting "high & low", and a personal fave, "living a boy's adventure tale" still linger on my mind after 20+ years. i've introduced my kid lately to the beatles & other class acts, and i wont mind my 4 year old daughter fall in love like i did with them especially with a debut like hunting high & low. their later materials like crying in the rain, living daylights & you are the one (which were single releases) were great stuff, but other songs from the respective albums won't much ring a bell. this is the best album they came out critically & commercially. 80's lives on forever!

Even if i did not used to take flute lessons from Mr. Chris, i would still be raving about this CD. A beautiful blend of the international music that has come to define his most well known style of playing, this recording is a must have. Having grown up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but spent the last number of years living in Baltimore, Mr. Chris manages to combine the best of both worlds. From traditional Cape Breton reels to Scottish laments to the French music of Quebec and finally to the mastery of the great Turlough O'Carolan, he covers it all, leaving nothing untouched. He is supported by fellow Helicon member Robin Bullock (also an incredible soloist), as well as Ann Marie Morgan, and Pete Sutherland, and together they are brilliant. My favorite track is Rochester Schottische, but that may be because that is the first piece that Mr. Chris ever taught me. He is an incredible teacher, person, and musician, and this CD exemplifies this!

Benjamin Britten wrote songs throughout his life, starting at age 14 (Quatre chansons françaises) and ranging from his settings of English and French folk songs (represented here by two in each language) to longer and more complex works. The centerpiece of the disc (apart from the early and very Schoenbergian Sinfonietta op. 1) is the five-part song cycle Our Hunting Fathers. The cycle, written in 1936, was devised by W.H. Auden and reflects in obscure and disjointed fashion the polemical pacifism of the time. The episodes alternate between drama and lyricism and are generally more declamatory than melodic, using the kind of heightened speech sometimes termed sprechstimme. The settings and orchestration are strong and imaginative, and the result is very effective. Ian Bostridge (whose recording of Schubert Lieder is not to be missed) has a beautiful voice: silvery, sweet, expressive, and capable of considerable dramatic impact. His articulation in English is impeccable, less so in French (those lazy vowels!), and while his interpretations sometimes seem a little overrefined, that's the nature of the music itself. Daniel Harding and the Britten Sinfonia provide excellent accompaniments, and the sound is very good. An interesting recital, especially for Britten fans. --Alex Morin

As Amazon customers may find a 2nd opinion reassuring, I will just say that I agree ..., and would add only that this very striking CD will interest more than just Britten fans. Anyone interested in lieder/mélodies (what great settings these are) or the English tenor style should have it and will understand why from the opening bars of the very first track.

    5 out of 5 stars A revelation!.......1999-01-27

Ian Bostridge is not your average tenor: his voice is plangent to the point of heart-break, and he has some of the most exquisite consonants I've hearda singer utter. Bostridge's new recordings of Britten's earliest works for voice and orchestra (Britten was 14 when he wrote the Quatre Chansons Francaises, and only 22 when he wrote Our Hunting Fathers) are as touching and revelatory as his recent Schubert and Schumann disks. Bostridge really makes Our Hunting Fathers work. For example, in the song "Rats Away!" you get a genuinesense of terror; when sopranos sing this song it becomes a study in coloratura.Bostridge performs "Messalina" slower than most sopranos, which makes the song really deliver its emotional goods: Bostridge's high B-flat on the word "Fie!" will rip right through your heart. But it's the "Dance of Death" that really raises the hair on the back of your neck: this nastily ironic song about hunting (that Britten used as a metaphor for the political scene in 1930's Europe) really seems to require a male voice. Bostridge's "Hey, dogs, hey!" makes your blood run cold. All told, some of the most astonishing singing I've ever heard. The Britten Sinfonia and conductor Daniel Harding are equally fabulous: I've never heard Britten's Op. 1 played with such conviction. If you're a Britten fan, you must own this recording!

    Album Description

The medium of the orchestral song-cycle is one that much attracted Britten. His concept of an anthology of sometimes diverse texts, unified by a common literary or poetic theme was a favourite device to which he returned several times. The very early yet astonishingly mature Quatre Chansons Françaises and the still relatively unknown Our Hunting Fathers are coupled on this first volume with one of Britten's great masterpieces, Les Illuminations which still startles in its vivid pictorial strokes and aching sensuality. Many composers had passed over Rimbaud's poems considering them too surrealist for lyrical settings. Britten, however, relished the opportunity to respond to their visionary, violent and sexual images. The vocal line closely follows the diversity of the text, by turns starkly declamatory, lyrical and heated.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning........2004-10-06

(This is the same recording formerly released on Collins Classics - the Lott song cycles recorded in 1994 and the Bryn-Julson in 1990.)

If this disc only had the 22 minutes of Felicity Lott's Les Illuminations, it would still be worth Naxos' asking price three times over.

Les Illuminations, a ten part song cycle with Orchestra composed in 1939, must be among the most gorgeously sensual compositions of all time, and Lott, Bedford and the English Chamber Orchestra bring it off perfectly. I can't think of any other Britten composition I enjoy more, not even the Serenade for tenor, horn and strings - which is saying something!

Our Hunting Fathers (1936; 28 mins) is, I think, a bit underrated. It's performance here is adequate (Phyllis Bryn-Julson takes the vocal part) but I think I was somewhat spoiled for it by the brilliance of Ian Bostridge on the EMI set (with a close-as-humanly-possible-to-perfect Serenade). Still, this will be a good enough recording for you to work out if you like it.

Quatre Chansons Francaises (1928; 12mins) were a real discovery for me. I enjoyed them so much when I first played the disc I immediately went back to listen to it again twice more! Then I was gobsmacked to discover Britten wrote it when he was fourteen! It shows an incredible ability to set French texts sensitively for one so young. What a prodigy!

Again, Felicity Lott is wonderful, clearly treating it as seriously as everything else she sings. You can hear a lot of borrowed influences in Britten's orchestral writing, most obviously Wagner, but it is a fascinating insight into where Britten came from musically. And it is a downright enjoyable piece of music in its own right.

Wholeheartedly recommended. A box of delights at a bargain price. And with astonishing generosity, Naxos have included a 16 page booklet with full texts and translations, career information for those involved, and an informative essay by Lloyd Moore! Is there anything that company can't do?

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

This is a wonderful disc in its composition as well as in the performance of all concerned. This is Britten at his most creative best!!!!The Serenade for Tenor, horn and strings with its 8 sections is all very descriptive and lovely! Britten was inspired to write this after meeting Dennis Brain, the talented British French horn player in l942. His long time companion Peter Pears, was the tenor voice for this work. Britten took considerable care over his selection of the poetic texts and the "Serenade" marks his renewed commitment to making use of his native language for his music. It is the first work in which the composer explores the musical and rhythmic possibilities of English diction in a manner directly inspired by the example of Henry Purcell. During the 1940's, he further celebrated his native musical and literary heritage by embarking on a series of folksong settings, two of which are included on this disc: 'O Waly,Waly' and 'Oliver Cromwell". Britten described his precocious "Our Hunting Fathers" as "rather wild, but I think interesting",and that it is. The vocal technique required to sing this is phenominal and Ian Bostridge is the man for the job. Just listen to him as he sings from this work :"Rats Away" and "Dance of Death". Is there anything he can't sing?????? This is a 10 star disc.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, delightful, terrifying, hilarious, beautiful!.......2002-02-09

What can I say about this amazing album? Britten was a brilliant composer, and his music always takes my breath away, but this has been my first thorough exposure to song cycles. The two cycles in this album contain such variety! There's something about the prologue and final song of "Our Hunting Fathers" that gives me such a chill, perhaps knowing that it was a pacifist comment on WWII. But in the middle is the weepy, perhaps mocking "Messaline," bracketed by my favorites, "Rats Away" and "Dance of Death", both of which have elements of chaos, terror and humor, particularly because of Bostridge's excellent singing style, fully comprehending the depth of meaning behind every syllable and note he sings (and sounding like he must thoroughly enjoy the fun of singing them!) The Serenade's "Elegy" and "Nocturne" are also rather ominous, frightening, gripping, and thrilling! The horn solos, (prologue and epilogue) are melancholy and beautiful. (How does Britten know how to bring out the best in every voice and instrument?) In the middle of the album, "Waly, waly" (The Water is Wide) is performed touchingly, with such sympathy in Bostridge's singing and in Britten's setting of the accompaniment. And "Oliver Cromwell" at the end cannot fail to bring a smile of laughter to your face! Overall, the album is full of everything you could ask from Britten and Bostridge, a perfect combination. Essential!
