"There's no good new music." This complaint has become a cultural buzzphrase reflecting the mainstream record buyer's frustration with hip-hop's dominance of the pop market or regret that most acts with a hit can't deliver a complete album.

Taking on the music industry may be beyond the job description of any band, but the Waxwings have outdone themselves in the "complete album" department and created a lush, beautiful hook-filled gem.

Over time I've realized that one sign of a top-drawer, no-filler album is that different tracks (or even all tracks) can become the favorite depending on mood or time. REM/Murmur, The Smithereens/Especially For You, and The Stone Roses/The Stone Roses all fit this description. Perhaps not coincidentally they are all debut albums and The Waxwings have achieved the rare debut/classic double with Low To The Ground.

The songwriting, the performances (those harmonies!) and the production (no discernable evidence of ProTools or gratuitous post-grunge compression) combine to produce pop (in the best sense of the word) perfection. Play this album in your car, at work and anywhere else you can. Invariably people will ask "Who is that?" Then it's your turn to preach the gospel.

I write this with the benefit of hindsight; the band have issued two subsequent albums that tend to fall into the "difficult follow-up" category. They are quality to be sure but serve mostly to contrast this amazing first effort.

As someone has already pointed out this is probably the best CD you've never heard. From the stunning vocal harmonies to the hook-filled pop arangements this is a band that has produced, what I consider, a "PERFECT" album. It's an especially impressive feat considering "Low to the Ground" is the band's first official recording. Every song is nothing short of awesome. All hyperbole aside, if you are a fan of late 60s / early 70s pop you will not be disappointed.

Found the follow-up, Shadows of the Waxwings, first on a Virgin listening post on a trip to Chicago. That album is good, and I bought it. Then I discovered this gem. Every song is a little different, but the whole CD is characterized by the stunning vocal harmonies and the shifts in tempo. This is one of the best albums that you have (probably) never heard of.

The oft-sited comparisons to the Beach Boys, Beatles, and Big Star confound me. This CD starts off brilliantly with Keeping The Sparks, an almost instant classic and likely the origin of the Beach Boys remarks. I must say this disc is thoughtfully sequenced, after the opening number, each tune is more uninspired than the last, sinking into a comfortable zone of predictable alt-country pap.

With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

..and listen to this revalation!

I bought this CD after hearing 'Turn Off The Lights' which is perhaps one of the sexiest songs I've heard in a long time.
However, when I listened to the whole CD I was surprised that it had a perfect blend of ethnic and modern music styling.
Emok had collaborated with the talented Raquy Danziger of NY to add a taste of traditional Middle Eastern music to their progressive Isreali rock.

Personally, as a fan of punk/metal/goth music and also as a musician specialising in world musical styles, I found this CD to be impressive and inspiring.
The drums kick arse, the guitars are powerful, and the vocals are raw but in a good way.
If you want new and refreshing hardcore rock, you'll find it here.
If you appreciate a middle-eastern aesthetic, you won't be disapointed.
All in all, I highly reccomend this to anybody wishing for something amazing and new, but still relatable, to add to their collection.

If you looking for something fun, catchy, heavy and important.............you need to pick this up. I read about them in Revolver sometime ago. I must say SOAD was mentioned in the review....and although they might sound like SOAD at first they certainly blossom into some other variation of great music. They are a three piece band hailing from Israel from which they escaped mandatory military enlistment. Very raw at times and very off the wall at times these guys speak there mind without fear. Are they the next great thing...........I think so!

Selected for inclusion in this second John McCormack CD issued by Naxos are Irish songs he recorded between the years 1910 and 1921. Don't expect the John McCormack aged 25 in 1910 to have the interpretative skills evident in his later years, but the voice was already compelling in its unique nasal tenor quality, and recording processes of the time captured it well.

The songs themselves are less distinguished. They met the demand for ditties that recalled a long lost homeland for a large population of USA immigrants. McCormack made a fortune by meeting this need, so that performing and recording them enabled him to give up the career in opera that he disliked.

These Naxos transfers and remasterings make these very old recordings sound better than in any other incarnation I have ever heard while magically eliminating most of the surface hiss that formerly was so intrusive.

      Wow, This CD has some nice hooks. I've see the band with out the keys, and thay rock hard. I like both sides.

      It's hard to believe that this is the debut album for Stockcar Named Desire. The songs are excellent and fun to dance to or just listen to. The lyrics are fun and humorous. The tunes are great - classic yet original. I think this band will go far, and anyone with a soft spot for rockabilly music, or just has a wide variety of music that they listen to should definitely buy this CD. With top notch instrumentals and first class singing talent, this is an excellent album that anyone can appreciate. So crank it up and have fun!
