Roky tribute.......2006-03-29
I hate to admit this but this was my first exposure the width of Roky Erickson's talent. To hear these songs done by bands/musicians that I liked, was to open a whole new door of music to me. Roky deserves better than he has gotten. Hopefully people will keep finding this and going on the discover Roky and other unsung heroes of music.
Lightning never stikes anymore, but I can't make it rain........2005-05-20
This is a tribute album to Roky Erickson. Erickson was the lead singer of the 13th Floor Elevator and later performed solo. Roky was (and is) a mentally disturbed individual, who wrote very strange songs. Here, 19 artists perform 18 of his songs ("Reverberation" is covered twice). Most of the performances are good and this album will hopefully bring attention to this cult hero.
One of the better "tribute" CDs out there.......2003-07-02
Probably because of the GREAT material. Yes, Roky was the mad (? -- he was put in a mental institution for a while) genius behind the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Most of the covers here are exceptional and come from a variety of folks (ZZ Top, Jesus & Mary Chain, REM, Lou Ann Barton, etc.). I was lucky enough to see Roky soon after he was released from the hospital in the mid-70s (completely weird, he and Willie Nelson showed up unannounced and jammed at a free gig outside of Austin). I'm just pleased that so many artists did such a great job for a somewhat troubled soul.
Great compilation, even if you've never heard the originals.......1999-09-06
Somebody should make this explicit: this album features covers of The 13th Floor Elevators, a psychedic band led by Roky Erickson. As you can see from the track list above, diverse musical tastes are represented. The album never fails to entertain me even though I've never actually heard any of the original songs.

A wonderful Punkabilly gem.......2007-06-20
The Cramps have always been a bit of an oddity to the uninitiated, it would seem. My mother used to hear me playing them on my stereo in high school, with no objection to their rockabilly roots, however she could never grasp why when the college station would show old video of their live shows, they were so over sexed and "out there."
There in lies, for me, the joy of the music on this album. while not particularly in your face sexually speaking, the undertones and inuendo seem to float in and out to the pulsating rock beats and the heavy reverb. Drawing heavily from surf rock of the 60's, there's a hauntingly soothing feel to many of the tracks on this combined reissue ("The Crusher" not being among such songs). A great soundtrack for a late night trip to the drive-in or downtown, assuming that's your thing. The only reason that i dont rate this album at 5 stars is that very few of the tracks have stood out over the course of three full listening session, GooGoo Muck and about three others. A good starting point for those looking for an introduction to the Cramps, but for that purpose i would more likely recommend Bad Music for Bad People, but it also stands as a solid release for those familiar with such music. A word of warning- While often pinned as "psychobilly" it should be noted that the cramps are not nearly as aggressive as most psychobilly bands tend to be
A Jungle Full Of Hits.......2007-04-28
The Cramps-Psychedelic Jungle/Gravest Hits *****
The grandparent of psychobily The Cramps have rereleased two of their biggest sellers on one cd. Psychedlic Jungle was one of the bands most popular albums of their career. Gravest Hits was what it sounds like the bands greatest hits but in true psychobily tradition they have to add the dark drama to the title. The bands greatest hits is good for someone who just wants to get to know The Cramps or for someone who is just getting into the band but it does not do the band justice as most of their best songs were not even released as singles so they couldnt have become hits. Psychedelic Jungle while it is a great album it could have been better, it is certainly no Bad Music For Bad People.
The Cramps are among a rare breed of bands that are so original and so authentic and good that it is hard not to like them.
Sepperatly the two albums are nothing way two special Psychedelic Jungle is three stars at the most and Gravest Hits is easily a four but placed together like this and they quickly become five stars. This is a collection of songs that would help to introduce any new fan of the genre or of the band.
PSYCHOSIS AT ITS BEST!.......2007-01-24
Alright, mein wunderkind, it's another 'should've been 10 stars' review.Robert Johnson met the devil at the crossroads; Lux and Ivy met him in a deep zombie and cannibal-infested jungle with visions of horror filling their already demented minds. Psychedelic Jungle remains one of the best albums to come from the early eighties, period. The covers sound like the Cramps wrote these themselves (and back in the day, when I first heard tracks off this album on the radio, I thought they did). Their version of The Crusher will have you heading for the next wrestling arena with the sole intent of getting in the ring and placing a well-placed smackdown on the WWE. Beautiful Gardens is garage rock from guaranteed hell. The Gravest Hits tracks are mostly covers, done in that insane style that we've come to expect from the Cramps (and also among their earliest material). Get this before the apocalypse takes place!
Cramps - 'Psychedelic Jungle/Gravest Hits' (A&M).......2006-11-16
Some of the band's more recent fans may not realize that this is an actual 2-on-1 CD reissue,of their very first effort, the five track EP 'Gravest Hits'('79) with well done covers like Roy Orbison's "Domino",Trashmen's "Sufrin' Bird" and the Ricky Nelson hit "Lonesome Town".But first, you get the band's second full length lp,'Psychedelic Jungle'('81) with killer rockabilly pieces the Cramps themselves have totally mastered such as "Goo Goo Muck","Rockin' Bones","Caveman",the catchy "Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk" and "Green Door".An absolute must-have for any and all true Cramps fans.Get it!Look at that used price.A priceless work in music history, sort of.
One of my top 20 favorite CDs!.......2006-10-09
I don't want to reveal how many years I've owned this CD or the LPs before it...too many moons have risen. The previous reviews covered everything I agree with, but I'd also like to add that though the music is slower, it gets you moving. You can't sit still! The grinding beat, sexual and stimulating, and the lyrics...well, you just have to decide that for yourself, are too cool!
"Goo Goo Muck" was my daughter's favorite song when she was 2-years-old, and she sang "Green Door" at a party when she was 4-years-old to an astonished, older crowd (It being an old song with questionable meaning). Even small children know "swell" music when they hear it. I weaned mine on the greats.
It seems most Cramps fans enjoy the same songs; likely due to superior-minded aficionados seeking musical perfection.
The Cramps' performances are something to be seen as well: bizarre, sexually-charged, hard to forget.
This CD is a great place to start. I have introduced many people to Cramps-style rock...invariably, they always get hooked (especially on Goo Goo Muck).
Don't forget the kiddies!

Customer Reviews:
Great blues-rock!.......2007-06-07
Eric Gales is one of the few artists out there keeping my favorite genre alive--blues rock. The material on this CD is top notch, reminds me a lot of Kenny Wayne's Trouble Is CD. His guitar playing is phenomenal, blending lightning fast Satriani-like runs with the feel and tone of Hendrix and SRV. His own style, in other words. Personally I'm not too enamored with his vocal style, but for me it's good enough to serve the material well. And they are great songs. Keep up the good work, Eric!
ELECTRIC Blues Guru.......2007-05-12
Wow! What a effort by this terrific guitar player! Eric Gales should get more recognition by the masses. This CD is contagious and catchy. You'll find yourself humming the melodies or even harmonies after one listen! I've got all of his efforts and this one is great! You won't be disappointed! He has a very decided Hendrix influence and yet taken a step further. Some of the tunes are radio friendly, though not a bad thing 'cause they are just plain tasty! I've never been able to see him perform, but I can truely imagine as his music inspires musical visions.
Eric Gales is the real deal.......2007-05-05
When Eric released his first CD (Eric Gales Band), a friend of mine told me about it, so I bought it. I was absolutely blown away. Here is this 16 year old kid playing hard blues rock like he'd been doing it for 30 years. I own everything he has put out on CD, and even though I find it hard to believe (as a guitar "player" myself), he just keeps getting better. His latest CD, Psychedelic Underground, is incredible. He has matured to a level most musicians will never reach, even though (hopefully) he hasn't neared his prime. This is his best release to date, and I can hardly wait for his next effort. How about a DVD, Eric?
The Psychedlic Underground.......2007-03-21
The Psychedelic Underground is pure Eric Gales. The strong songs, strong vocals, and strong musicianship across the board make this album the next step in the staircase up to wherever this young man is taking us. The two openers, "Wake Up Call" and "Rumble", are definitely the best openers on record, and when the chorus of "I've Got Something On You" hits, the realization of the originality that Eric Gales exudes becomes clear. His last album, Crystal Vision, should have been hard to top, but the vibe alone on Psychedelic Underground adds it as another masterpiece to the collection. Eric Gales' big strength is his ability to move forward with his music from album to album. This has been true since day one, and it is even more apparent now. Each song is a stand alone, including the unexpected, brilliant "Pretty Lie" and the Texas trio style "Crossing the Line" and once again, in true Eric Gales form, the cherry on top is the last song, "Someone Else's Problem". The Psychedelic Underground is truly great, totally unique, it is well delivered and it marks our place until we find out where he decides to take us next. It's important to listen to his records and see him play live, Eric Gales is so welcome in the music world, now and always.
What a Treat.......2007-02-28
Gales came into my radar with the release of "that's what i am" and then there was a long 5 year wait for "crystal vision". Now a year later we have this release and I can only say that I am thankful. When an artist touches my heart ......... graditude.
I've always thought of Gales as a strange offspring of the greats. What Albert King was the granfather, Hendrix and Trower the Dad's while Jeff Beck babysat the kid while he grew up. What king of player would he be? He'd be able to play 32th note ascensions and decensions up and down over a 4/4 beat in a triple phrasing, and it would sound like a butterfly flying from flower to flower. Gales plays with a attitude and intensity that can only come from the streets yet he brings grace into every song.
Well, enough with my petty senimentality I love the guy what can say? The focus on "underground" brings the vocals up in the forground more than other CD's. His singing now deserves this attention. Vocally this is a great disc. Guitar wise, the man can't seem to play a bad note.
All I can say is Thank you and I hope this a trend that repeats and we get another disc next year.
Bless you, Eric

It would take thousands of dollars (or as many hours in download time) to hoard the most coveted songs from the eighties' top secret power pop bands, garage combos and post-new wave throngs into one collection. Or you can let Rhino Records, which masterfully conspired with writer/musician Lenny Kaye late last century to inflate and repackage Kaye's original Nuggets compilation, do the legwork. These four discs, though chaotically sequenced, scour all sides of the ponds to capture the vitality and innovation of mostly 1980-'85, introducing (or reintroducing) to-be-influential bands like San Francisco's Flamin' Groovies, New York's Raybeats, England's Soft Boys, Australia's the Church and Sweden's Nomads. Where else can you find XTC spin-off Dukes of Stratosphear, the La's "There She Goes" and the Bangles a half-decade prior to their manic Monday, along with the Cramps, the Plimsouls, the db's and the Bevis Frond in a single shebangand with Rhino's ample, informative, transcendent liner notes, to boot? --Scott Holter

some hits, mostly misses.......2007-03-23
Unlike the first 2 Nuggets boxes which were both chock-o-block with essential garage classics, this one has about half a disc of essentials and the rest are YAWN!
And since when do rockabilly, surf music, sunshine pop or prog rock get included under the "Nuggets" banner? Those styles would never have made it onto the original Nuggets collections, so why this one? The spectrum of "retro" influences seems to have widened too far to make any conceptual sense.
Nevertheless I'm very happy to have discovered a few treasures I probably wouldn't find anywhere else. But at this price, not so happy!
'Children Of Nuggets:Original Artyfacts From The Second Psychedelic Era - 1976-1996' (Rhino).......2007-01-28
A nifty 4-CD box set, 100 songs from bands that were considered to be (at least) somewhat psych or garage-like rock 'n roll. Tunes from the likes of The Bangles,Barracuudas,Smithereens,Soft Boys,Fleshtones,The DB'S,The Lasts,Lime Spiders(still see their old MTV video every great now and then),Posies, the all-girl band Pandoras,The Cramps,Vipers,Plimsouls, Teenage Fanclub and The Church. That's JUST the bands that I do remember. Another should-have box set release from the people at Rhino. Recommended.
Barely worth the bucks.......2006-12-10
I must whole-heartedly agree with Fran, ( a real soul mate, it seems) whose well thought out and written review was right on the money. I was a college station DJ in the Bay area for 15+ years and specialized in this music and played all these bands. I loved the cool Swedish and Aussie bands of the 80's, as well as many U.S. bands doing the new psych/garage rawk. If I couldn't get them in for an interview, I'd get them on the phone. Anyway, I would only consider getting this set USED if I really wanted it for just the small portion of good/great stuff on it. These are albums and singles you'd have tough time finding now, or might pay a pretty penny for. The book Alec wrote (and he's extremely knowledgable) would also add some value.

Children of Nuggets is minor league comp........2006-09-04
This sophomore collection holds no comparison to the more influential Nuggets collections-- Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968; or Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond. Those two box sets highlighted some unknown and early punk and pop rock influences and proved as influential as Harry Smith's folk collection. Not so here. I counted about an 1/8th of the songs decent, but have to ask how often will you return to these novelties? Not much.
Killer collection.......2006-04-22
Having bought the two previous box set releases it was a no-brainer to pick this up. A great collection of tunes on this set. I wish other labels would spend the extra time and bucks to put out quality box sets like Rhino records does.
We had a BBQ out on the deck with the neighbours the other night and I had all 3 box sets loaded in a mega changer (12 discs total) and put them on random...people bopped and grooved into the wee hours and they all said they loved the tunes.

Wondermints.......2007-02-24
I bought this album several years ago at a Brian Wilson concert. It's a whole lot of great songs. Darian writes the kind of songs you wanna hear over and ever again. Also, thought the 80+ bonus tracks of waves followed by a rejected beer ad was pretty funny.
Great power pop.......2006-10-30
Terrific power pop album. The Brian Wilson influences are clear, and are wonderful.
Not bad, not great........2004-10-26
Bali is a clever pop offering but it's also over-reaching and too derivative for my tastes. Perhaps its only intention is to be an encomium of 60's pop. There are moments of brilliance. (Cellophane and Spoke of a Whirled Wheel being representative of that.) Does this cd draw me in and cause me to listen to it again and again as say Sgt Peppers or Pet Sounds does? Of course not. Is it entertaining? I suppose. There were moments when a chord change or selection of sounds caught me off guard but after a half dozen listenings I ended up skipping over a majority of the songs and the cd now sits in my kitchen underneath, I believe, a pile of papers.
Creativity and Listenability at it's Best.......2004-08-30
I've long been of the opinion that a truly magical recording just begs to be played again and again. "Bali' is such an album. Make no mistake, this is high art. I find Wondermint's sound to be SO refreshing and unique among the mass of noise out there. I confess to only recently discovering these wonderful artists last month when I purchased "Mind if We Make Love', which is also magic from beginning to end. Bali', which I understand was the predecessor to the aforementioned masterpiece, reveals more of the bands evolvement, (they make great back to back listens by the way... sounds like one continuum),
So, what sets these guys apart from the crowd? Well I guess it's like anything in music: you either really resonate with what you hear on a vibrational level or not. Well, I do. I LOVE this stuff. First of all, its surprizingly creative. Every song here goes into unexpected territory musically. They weave a beautiful tapestry of sound textures throughout and never stay too long on one... so the music is never boring and forever interesting. The guys are masterful musicians. Very complex and tight harmonies ride relentless high energy sound waves that continually change and take the listener on a pleasure ride.
But what I really notice as being refreshing is that this band really appreciates beauty in the way that the older great artists of the sixties embodied. By that I mean, vocal harmony, chording, etc. is just friendly to the ear. Lots of great vocal work that is arranged tightly with the instrumentation to create a total sound that is unique. And they play with a great deal of passion and youthful energy. It's music I feel in my gut. Their belief in thier art, and the authenticity really shines though.
'Bali' appears to be a theme album of sorts, but I'm still working on deciphering exactly what that is. Ha ha... it doesn't matter. The experience of listening is it's own reward. It has many fine moments, but really the whole set is of very high calibre. The stylish opener, 'Arnaldo Says' and the sweet following 'Sting o' Luv' are among my current songs that I just can't get enough of. 'Hypnolove' is also absolutely spellbinding, and is very high on my list of favorite songs by ANYONE at ANYTIME. It's pure magic! Other high points: 'In and around Greg Lake', 'Cellophane', 'Spoke of the Wheel Whirled', 'Wanderlust', 'Telemetry', well, I could on.... and include every track here! There is not a song here that is less than a wonderful song. These guys are the 'beatles' or 'beach boys' of the current generation. Immense talent. I hope they eventually get the public recognition they so much deserve.
Bottom line: Don't hesitate to buy this CD. Its a beautiful and very cool and original recording. Theres nothing else out there like it, except of course, for other Wondermint gems. But even then, this is unique unto itself.
VIVA WONDERMINTS!
Bali Pop.......2003-09-10
This is a terrific album by the best pop group to come along in years. The musicianship is stellar, the production is creative and intelligent and fun, and the melodies are the best I've heard from any modern band. Their many influences are incorporated smoothly and literately; they compliment the Wondermints' sound but never dominate it, and the songs are all fresh and different but still form a single cohesive album. The title song evokes the Beach Boys' "Smiley Smile" album.
Almost a kvetch: like much of what's around currently, these great songs tend towards a little glibness (e.g. a song about puppetoons); lyrics are clever without any great depth of feeling. This doesn't affect the pleasure of the listening experience, but they really take it to the next level lyrically and emotionally with great success on their next album, "Mind If We Make Love To You", a dynamic stride forward for the best band going.

Essential for 60's music collectors!.......2004-12-10
A BIG thank you to Big Beat UK for releasing this compilation of 4 very rare EP's from San Fran's psychedelic underground, otherwise known as the "San Francisco Sound". If you were lucky enough to find and purchase VG+ to near mint original pressings of these EP's, God Bless You and because you have spent over $4,500 easy. Big Beat UK have done a fine job remastering these gems on CD as the sound quality is superb considering the sources. The Frumious Bandersnatch was taken from the master tapes and every song on their EP is a gem. "Hearts To Cry" is an incredible song and features some of the finest 2-way acid guitar attack to come out of the west coast during 68'. It's a crying shame this band never signed to a major label and released a full length LP. The Mad River EP is a psych masterpiece, although it was dubbed from acetate. "A Gazelle" should be played at maximum volume with the speakers facing out of the house windows! Notes from the Underground released 2 LP's after the EP and is decent late 60's rock. Country Joe and the Fish's EP is a must have. These guys basically started it all. The EP versions are a bit faster and looser than the LP versions, but nonetheless are performed with conviction and assurance that a "change is gonna come". Overall, all 4 EP's are ESSENTIAL listening for 60's music collectors and lovers alike!
excellent 60s psych compilation.......2000-12-23
this is a highly recommended release. the version of section 43 is actually probably even better than the one on the lp. country joe &the fish are in fine form on the ep. mad river's amphetamine gazelle ( also done on their debut record) is a wild and brilliant slice of acid rock, as is the weird ep only anti war anthem orange fire. i also strongly recommend both of their albums, which i feel are two of the stronger san francisco area releases of the period. notes from the underground, despite their moniker, won't remind you of the great dostoevsky story, they were really a fine garage, or proto -power pop aggregation, with a good timey flavoring somewhat like the lovin' spoonful or bay area contemporaries the charlatans. the frumious bandersnatch (their name taken from lewis carroll's poem jabberwocky)serve up some wonderful and exhilirating psych that probably is the highlight of the cd along with mad river's material. the guitar work, ominous bass riff, great vocals, and powerful lyrics in hearts to cry is amazing, and the song is a san francisco acid classic. the other two bandersnatch tracks are also very good. there's very little filler on this release and it definitely should be heard by acid rock fans and sixties enthusiasts
i cant believe no one reviewed this thing yet?!.......2000-10-06
Berkeley was at the absolute heart of the sixties. I could have done w/out Letters from the underground but between Country Joe & the Fish (the only band on the album people may have heard or heard of), Frumious, and Mad River ya' go to many a place. This is really a piece of history-a psychadelic wonderland.

I can hear the lyrics!.......2006-11-16
I'm glad that I ran across this CD. I have the original issue of the album, which was not mixed right. The vocals are barly audiable. There is an appology on the back cover for the "under nourished sounds". This is a great album, especialy now that I can hear what their singing!
The Best Music the Prunes ever did........2005-09-22
The Electric Prunes grow up on their second LP release.
Most fans of the 60's psych/punk genre include these guys 1st LP ('I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night') as an essential example of this type of music, but take the 2 singles off that album ('I Had too Much to Dream' and 'Get Me to the World on Time') and you have a pretty mediocre record.
What we have with 'Underground' is that absolute rarity... a genuine 60's Psych/Punk LP that you can listen to without having to skip tracks. The only other bands of the genre who managed that were the '13th Floor Elevators', 'The Music Machine' and possibly 'The Shadows of Knight', 'The Chocolate Watchband' and 'The Seeds'.
Listen with headphones to pick up the subtleties of David Hassingers wonderful stereo mix.
Best Tracks: The weird 'Great Banana Hoax', the spooky 'Antique Dolls', the sinister nursery rhyme 'Wind Up Toys' and the fantastic vocals on 'I Happen to Love You'.
Forget 'Mass in F Minor' - that's a studio concoction that involved more session musicians than band members (psychedelia by numbers for the tourists). 'Underground' is the Prunes lasting contribution to rock, and with their recent reformation it may finally get the recognition it always deserved.
Electric Prunes at their Best.......2005-08-13
If you liked I had too much to dream, I would highly recommend this album. The songs have beautiful harp-like sounds and excellent vocals. This is a must have for anyone who collects 60s music.
+1/2 -- Superb second LP of '60s garage psychedelia.......2005-06-30
Unlike their psychedelic contemporaries in San Francisco, the Electric Prunes retained their garage-punk sensibilities as they produced guitar-and-organ drenched psychedelia. This, their second LP, extends the variety of psych-pop heard on their debut, while honing a tighter and heavier sound. The album has great bass lines ("The Great Banana Hoax" and "Hideaway"), skewed country-blues ("It's Not Fair"), autoharp-stained sunshine pop ("Big City"), and plenty of the bluesy fuzz guitar and organ that marked the band's debut.
Additional highlights include a Seeds-like cover of the obscure Goffin & King tune, "I Happen to Love You," the lost-in-time "Antique Doll" (writ by the same pair of outside writers who penned "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night),") and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators-like "Long Day's Flight." Sundazed's crisply remastered stereo reissue adds a pair of bonus tracks, the single "Everybody Knows You're Not in Love" and its flip "You Never Had It Better." The B-side is the more ferocious rocker, but really, it's the album's tracks that make this worth buying.

Originally released in late 1967,this was the band's follow-up to their debut 'I Had Too Much To Dream' of which 'Underground' is nearly as good.Nice reissue of a forgotten(by many)good psychedelic garage rock album.Tracks I was most drawn to were "Wind-Up Toys","Antique Dolls","Dr.Do-Good" and the two bonus cuts that Collector's Choice had tagged on,"Everybody Knows" and "You Never Had It Better".A couple of other Electric Prunes titles I could recommend to listeners would be the lp reissue that came after this one,'Mass In F Minor' and the later day archive release 'Stockholm '67'(see my reviews of both).

Ultimate trip.......2005-01-25
more than a nostalgia trip. more like opening an old suitcase and finding bars of gold. a real treasure if you remember san fran in the good old days or just want to recapture the vibes. and DJ tom donahue is a nice addition to the tracks. i cannot stop playing this CD. i had forgotten the great songs by the youngbloods, byrds and donovan. but besides those gems you get the 11 minute version of Time by the Chambers Brothers. Tune in, turn on, drop out. The Brothers are psychedelisized. Wow. Buy this CD and I guarantee you will be groovin' down Haight Street or in your mind. Peace and love.
Now the time has come.......2004-01-29
I never got to hear Tom Donahue, since I was only a baby at the time, and was on the opposite side of the country anyway. Based on the aural evidence presented on this CD, he seems to have been a pretty cool guy. This is not one of his actual shows, but rather "airchecks" from some of his broadcasts, with songs he might have played inserted. Some of the songs are actually introduced by name, but obviously they were limted as to what songs they were able to license. The CD opens with Tom mentioning that one of the songs he had just played was "Come Together" by the Beatles, but of course they weren't able to license that song. One of my favorite parts is when Tom says "Here's the Youngbloods 'Darkness, Darkness', and I'm looking forward to the day I can hear this in stereo, cause it must be unreal." Then the song procedes to play, and it actually is in stereo. This CD is a fascinating time capsule, and if you are a fan of underground radio from the late '60s - early '70s, or just curious to find out about it, you should find this CD.
Right on Man!!.......2001-10-16
This cd is way too cool. Excellent choice of music and the remastering is very well done. This cd would be a huge hit for anyone wanting to relive the time and tunes, to the curious, and to those that love classic and psychedilic rock. A must have.
The essential collection.......2001-09-09
Anyone who was around in the late 60s cannot help but feel the loss of the vibrant underground music scene. The realities of the present corporate dominated mass media preclude the possibility of there ever being another vibrant musical scene. However, this recording has an amazing ability to capture the the flavour of this bygone day. I strongly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoyed underground radio on the late 60s.
Audio Tidbits From A Bygone Era.......2001-06-17
This CD was released years ago now, but it captures a little of the 60s underground FM radio era and remains a valuable and historic footnote to it. I never got a chance to hear Tom Donahue, since I grew up in Los Angeles and only very briefly heard KSAN in its heyday. It's a real pleasure to hear his resonant voice on this CD! And to hear him "rap" about the Youngbloods, or an up and coming artist, or talk about how beautiful the Pacific Ocean looked that day.
And of course the music: Spirit's Fresh Garbage, The Chambers Bros' Time Has Come Today (which sounds especially 'psychedelic' here), The Youngbloods' Get Together (to which Tom says "I can't wait to hear this in stereo. It must be unreal!"), Quicksilver's What About Me, Donvan's Hurdy Gurdy Man, among others.
They say if you can remember the 60s, you weren't really there. Well whether you were or weren't, this CD captures the feel of 60s underground radio. It makes me wish even more I'd been able to hear much more of "KSAN, San Francisco/Oakland" in its "golden era" than I actually did. Highly recommended to any radio fan who wants to hear what the "San Francisco FM underground radio sound" was really like. I'm planning on getting "Volume 2" with B Mitchel Reed and look forward to hearing that one.
