    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great live album.......2007-05-19

This is probably one of the best live albums ever. At least in the prog rock universe it is. I still have a Japanese import of this I paid nearly 50 bucks for and I can't bring myself to get rid of it and buy a remastered version.

ELP were a great band live and this album captures what it must have been like to be at one of these shows. These are great performances.

Hoedown is a great opener here and played at a speed that really gets the crowd pumped up. Jerusalem is played very well and is probably one of the best versions i have ever heard. Toccata was always a bit of a strange song to me and i never thought they'd be able to pull it off live, but they have and it sounds great.

Tarkus was a great 20 minute slab on their second album and this live version plays for 27 minutes without ever getting boring. The extended Aquatarkus played here is amazing.

Take a Pebble is a great ballad with some of the best piano work that Keith has ever done. He was spot on playing this night and every time I hear this I'm glad it was recorded. Still you turn me on and Lucky Man are played in the middle of this in lieu of the acoustic guitar solo heard in the studio version. And the Piano Improvisation is always great to hear. The conclusion of Take a Pebble is played fairly well and ends another 26 minute chuck of this album.

Jeremy Bender/The Sheriff is a bit of fun. It would have been even more fun if they had always included Benny the Bouncer here, but that can be found on their Original Bootleg Series CD's (of which i have them all).

Karn Evil 9 was always a monster. They make it bigger here by adding a drum solo in the first impression and a nice long ending filled with computer sounds for the finale. Either way is the best half hour you will ever spend listening to anything.

But all in all this was a triple album back in the day so these two CD's are nearly two hours of live material.

The production here is not the best and this almost does sound like a bootleg but this is still great stuff. It lends an air or charm to this whole thing really. Even their Live at the Isle of Wight CD sounds like a bootleg but I can't imagine it any other way. I want it to sound raw and rough.

So buy this album if you like live material. If you're an ELP fan you should have this already, even if you don't like live shows.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary live performance.......2007-05-05

I'm glad this isn't vinyl, as I'd have worn out several copies by now. This is one of the finest live performances I've heard and captures the essence of Emerson, Lake and Palmer perfectly. The versions of "Tarkus", "Karn Evil 9" and "Take a Pebble" are amazing. Anyone who professes to be an ELP fan needs this CD in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars We're gonna give ya some Brain Salad Surgery.......2007-01-31

For the Concert/Performance I'll give it an A + However, I always thought the production and recording of this record is bootleg quality and dosen't do the high quality live sound of the 1973/74 tour justice. No matter, at least we have a document of the tour. Tarkus, Jerusalem and Brain Salad Surgery are better here than the studio versions.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.......2007-01-09

Very good music. Very easy to sit back, shut your eyes and get into it.

2 out of 5 stars The sound of six hands wanking.......2006-12-08

My first rock concert was seeing Emerson, Lake and Palmer in Pullman, Washington in 1974, and I used to love this album as 3 LP's on vinyl. But listening to it now, it's hard to take, and comes across as extraordinarily self-indulgent. Some of the songs ("Toccata," for example) might be interesting today if covered by an industrial band, and others sound hilariously like Devo in their primitive synth noodlings. Still, this is nicely recorded, and an accurate time capsule of the age when prog rock ruled the world. And remember, punk rock was spawned in part as a reaction to exactly this sort of masturbatory, self-important excess.

4 out of 5 stars Did You See Those Pictures...?.......2004-04-14

Well the other review was right... most of this cd has been on other ELP cds that audibly sound better.. but the three pictures of the guys on the inside of this cd was worth any price paid for it. Not only were Keith, Greg and Carl the most talented musicians ever... but they were also the best looking. The picture of Greg Lake tore my heart out! And listening to him sing on any cd.. is truly a spiritual experience.. and I'm not a bit biased!! ;)

      4 out of 5 stars Recycled.......2002-01-06

Made in EU in 2001, Serial# SMD-CD-370, Playing Time 85:08

This 2CD set is basically an abridged version of the "Then & Now" 2CD set (which clocks in at 126:42), and omits the 40 minutes or so of material recorded at the 1st California Jam concert.

I suggest you go and read the various reviews attached to the "Then & Now" set, which you can get for a few dollars more...

To me, the decision is a no-brainer (and while you're there, don't forget to add it to your shopping cart!)

          4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!.......2006-04-29

I would rate this Japanese remastered album 5 stars for the sound quality. It could not be better. For those who don't know this album it is the perfect legacy of their music. Also this recording will show you the most powerfull progresive musicians of the era with probably the best drummer with is best drum solo "the steam train" incredible! But the packaging is not a perfect replica of the original LP. Thats why I'm giving only 4 stars. The picture on the back of the group playing ( also on the biggest stage of this era) is
to much red comparing with the original. And the big error is with the
3 letters ELP inside they are not die cut like the original. A detail some will say but this Japanese version must be absolutely perfect regarding the price of it and it's not.

The facelift is primarily "Tarkus-Aquatarkus," which is the best version of that suite. Faster, frenetically brilliant, and fun. The "Aquatarkus" improvisation is extended and wild and eerie; the unhurried stuff by Lake, including "Epitaph," is deeper and plaintive. "Piano Improvisations" track is way fun too, and Keith also shines in the "Take a Pebble" interludes of piano playing. Otherwise, the rest of the set is lousy compared w/ the studio realeases.

5 out of 5 stars Great ELP Live album.......2004-08-31

Almost every version of the songs on this album, Jerusalem is the one exception, is played better than its studio counterpart. Not because they are flawless, but because of the passion of the playing. Toccata and especially Tarkus benefit greatly from the live treatment. The drum solo in Toccata is fantastic and the playing and speed at which Tarkus is taken greatly improves on what was an excellent piece to begin with. What energy! The piano improvisations in the middle of Take a Pebble are wonderful. ELP did exactly what a band should do when playing or recording live: stretch out, change arrangements and play their material with passion. An audience can produce a powerful energy that feeds the musicians who in turn feed the audience much to the enjoyment of all involved. When it works the band is pushed to create something magical and it worked on this tremendous album.

Performance aside though, the albums mix is flawed. The sound is somewhat vague and unfocused as though the band were playing from a distance. This may be daunting to some but when you consider the great music to be found on Welcome Back My Friends its a small trifle. Overall the CD is an excellent snapshot of one of great bands of '70s progressive rock on a very good night.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Great on CD.......2001-06-01

I had this album (3 records) in the 70's and it was worn out being played so much. This CD is great. The songs never sounded so good. This was one of my best albums then and one of my top CD's now. You can hear alot of E-L-P in bands of today, one is "Dream Theater". Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer your music made the 70's and was definitely ahead of it's time.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live CD You Would Ever Want To Hear.......2001-04-09

This originally came out has 3 vinyl lp's in the mid 70's. This album was so far ahead of it's time that time might be slowly catching up with it. This CD is packed with some of the greatest rock & roll music you would ever listen to. This CD (album) has always been my #1 favorite since I first heard it in the 70's. If you want a true tatse of progressive rock & roll this would be the CD to buy especially with high quality that imports have. Buy it & enjoy it.
