Like a shimmering pearl, The Light in the Piazza emerged from a sea of revivals, rehashings, and movie adaptations to secure 11 2005 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Based on an Elizabeth Spencer novella (which was also made into a 1962 film), it follows a mother, Margaret (Victoria Clark), and her daughter, Clara (Kelli O'Hara), as they take a vacation to Italy. There, Clara and a young Italian (Matthew Morrison) fall in love, but Margaret is determined to keep them apart.

The Light in the Piazza doesn't fit the model of most Broadway scores, with a splashy opener here, a swing number there, then the big ballad. The score is more of a unified whole, sometimes jarring, sometimes following the patterns of speech, and sometimes unfolding in glorious sheens of sound. (Heck, some of it's even in Italian!) In that sense, it's similar to another unconventional American musical set in Italy, Stephen Sondheim's Passion, which is more chamber opera than musical, and composer-lyricist Adam Guettel (song of Mary Rodgers, grandson of Richard Rodgers) seems the most likely heir apparent to Sondheim in the current generation of musical theater creators. O'Hara's voice soars in the score's most beautiful moments ("Say It Somehow," the title song), but Clark enjoys two exquisitely lyrical moments with "Dividing Day" and "Let's Walk." She was one of the show's six Tony winners (for Leading Actress), along with Guettel's score and the orchestrations, scenice design, lighting, and costumes, while O'Hara (for Featured Actress), Morrison, Craig Lucas's book, and Bartlett Sher's direction were also nominated. --David Horiuchi

    Album Description

The Light in the Piazza is arguably one of the most highly anticipated theatrical events of the decade for serious Broadway theatergoers. The Los Angeles Times has already declared its creator, Nonesuch artist Adam Guettel, "a composer for the new century," on the strength of his two Off-Broadway productions, the 1996 Obie-Award winning "folk musical" Floyd Collins and the 1998 song cycle, Myths and Hymns, TIME has described him as "a startlingly original songwriter." Few theatrical composers have been watched as closely as Guettel, and few musicals in the course of their development have generated so much substantial press or been praised so highly on the road as The Light in the Piazza. Both the New Yorker and The New York Times magazine devoted in-depth coverage to the evolution of Guettel's sophisticated, deeply moving score. New Yorker critic John Lahr decided,"Guettel's kind of talent cannot be denied. He shouldn't change for Broadway; Broadway, if it is to survive as a creative theatrical force, should change for him."

    5 out of 5 stars thanks .......2007-05-15

On time, in good condition, thanks to you and PM's suggestion on his website.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful musical!.......2007-05-15

This musical is definitely not for everyone, but I disagree with it not being hummable. I found myself humming "Love to Me," "The Beauty Is," "Let's Walk," and others. I fell in love with it almost instantly. I saw it for the first time on a Wednesday and bought the CD (and the CD of the star of the show at the time) right away.

I even went back to see it a week and a half later and watched the Lincoln Center PBS special (which I'd recorded on Tivo before the tour was finalized when I'd already missed it in NYC, since my sister would have hated this one and was with me that year) not long after that.

My husband thought there was too much Italian, but I agree with those who said that they were trying to take you into the world of Clara and Margaret and showing you how they were seeing Italy at that time and how little they would have understood initially in Italy. Personally, the language didn't bother me. The music is so beautiful, that it wasn't an issue. The fact that I understand romance languages and sang a lot in other languages probably helped that, but with such beautiful music, I don't see what the big issue is even if you can't understand a word.

If that does bother you, translate it online when you get it home and then you're set. The music is gorgeous and the story is beautiful. It's also very heartbaeking at times. I highly recommend it - there's a reason it won the Tony Award for Best Original Score.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-05-07

"The Light in the Piazza" is not a very good show and the music is appropriate to the general qualtiy of artistic expression.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing---But Not For Everyone.......2007-04-06

I first fell in love with this show when I saw it on "Great Performances" on PBS. I have since seen it live and now love it even more.

Some call it pretentious and over-the-top, but it seems that is from those who don't understand the show. Many of the devices used in the show are not incorporated in order to be pretentious, but rather are an essential part of bringing the story to life. For example: the use of Italian is meant to make the audience feel like the two Americans traveling to Italy on vacation--out of place and attempting to make sense of what's going on. Right away, the mood is set and we empathize with the lead characters because we are made to feel like foreigners right along with them. When the two lovers finally find a place of real emotion, they no longer need words and sing merely with AHs---their connection transcends the language barrier.

The mother's emotion is equally real as she is torn between letting her daughter live her life and feeling the terrible guilt of having turned away at the split second that her daughter's life-altering accident took place. Music conveying that kind of pain is rare in musical theater these days but, admittedly, can be difficult to understand, especially by younger audiences.

The performances are marvelous. Victoria Clark's in particular is perfect. She's funny, touching, and heart-breaking. One of the best musical theater performances I've ever seen.

This is a serious show---not a musical comedy---and will appeal more to parents or people who prefer fleshed-out characters. No, the show's music is not "catchy" or "poppy" in any way. You do not leave the theater singing the tunes you just heard. This music is meant to move the story along or shed light on a particular character or situation. If you want hummable, seek out a Weber show like "Phantom of the Opera." If you want real emotion, beautiful singing, and spot-on acting, give this one a try.

4 out of 5 stars As good as this CD is...........2007-03-23

...it is no substitute for the live show. I saw it at Lincoln Center last year with about 2/3 of the original cast featured on the soundtrack, but with Aaron Lazar as Fabrizzio and a replacement actress/singer (making her Broadway debut) as Clara. For me, they were both fine replacements of their predecessors.

The songs were sung with much more emotion in the live show than on the soundtrack CD, or at least we get a feeling of that in the narrative context, and it does make a difference (duh!).

Beautiful music. Wish there were an accompanying DVD of the show.

    5 out of 5 stars ravishing..........2007-07-02

if this recording is not on your short list of things to hear/do, it should be.
the Byrd setting of "Oh Christ who art our light and day" is one of the loveliest things that I have ever heard.
I play it ever day at the same, appointed hour; so comforting, so beautifully well-sung.
the Compline setting on Disc 2 is pretty memorable, too.
    a strong rec.

    5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2007-01-19

This is superb a capella singing. Each note, each syllable, is just right. John Rutter has a genius for writing and, as is the case here, performing religious choral music. The sound is gorgeous. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Swedish indie Rock.......2006-12-22

This song was a UK's smash hit in the summer of 2006 but has never been famous in the US (at least until now: Dec/2006), very unfortunately. It has become a hit song in Japan in Dec/2006, too. A funky English-singing band has been popular in their native country (Sweden) since 1999 but this catchy song has made them very famous in many countries. Victoria Bergsman, a fabulous Swedish rocker, is a vocalist of her band, The Concretes. She sings in English, too. If you like this song, do check out some cool songs of The Concretes, like "Chosen One" or "On The Radio." Along with Emilia (Rydberg) of "Big Big World", this band is the representation of modern Swedish tunes!

This is a great, catchy song that is a superb return to classical folky sound of the 60's, with a current popy sound to it. I highly recommend. It.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

      5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

5 out of 5 stars Track by track review!!.......2007-03-28

Here I will rate each song from 1-10 (10 being the best 1 being the worst) and then explain why and maybe a little information about the song!!

      1. Not Such An Innocent Girl (8/10)
Catchy but only after listening to it a few times! The video for this song is awesome, and her voice is really pretty in this song. Its like she's really trying to get the point through! Her first single peaking at #6 in the UK.

      2. A Mind Of It's Own (9/10)
Her voice at it's best. Beautiful song. The only reason it's not a perfect is because some of the lyrics don't make sense...but the rest...is just...breathtaking!! Her second, and last single from this album peaking at #6 in the UK.

      3. That Kind Of Girl (7/10)
Nice song. Not perfect. Her voice is very smooth and romantic here. Worth listening to a few times. In this song she says 'my affection AIN'T something you can buy' but when you listen super carefully, it still sounds just like she is saying 'my affection IS something you can buy'. Wierd, huh? Song about true love. Muuuushy!

      4. Like That (9/10)
The 'naughty' sounding violins at the beginning make this song irresistable! The chorus has them too! She has girl power in this song. It's a cool song.

      5. Girlfriend (10/10)
One of the two too good to be true songs on this album. Fast paced. The backround music is so......COOL!! In this song: Victoria gets a call from a girl who found Victoria's number in her boyfriend's pants. She accuses victoria of staeling her boy friend but Victoria says that her man was hitting on her AL:L last night and that she should be questioning her boyfriend, not VB!!

      6. Midnight Fantasy (8/10)
Song about *cough* sex *cough*. Sort of boring but catchy enough for an 8.

      7. I.O.U (4/10)
Every album has it's weak point, and this is it for Victoria's first album. Song about love between her and her husband. i feel like she just needed a song dedicated to him on her album, so she just made up a few lyrics in a couple of minutes and put them in there so her husband would be happy. Not a good song.

      8. No Trix. No Games (9/10)
Wow. Thats all i can say. WOW! the 'talking' (not singing) that she does in this song makes her sound so posh. Gotta luv it! Song about learining how to get guys...

      9. I Wish (10/10)
This is the other too good to be true song on this album. She SHOULD HAVE RELEASED IT!!!!! She would have gotten so much more credit if she had released this. This song is about her wanting a guy SOOO bad but, she knows it's not right to give it all away on the first night, so she is hoping he will still like her is she isn't a slut. Thsi song is awesome. You will listen to it over and over again forever and ever.

      10. Watcha Talkin' Bout (5/10)
The beginning is kind of weird. Boring song. About nothing much. She tried too hard to make this catchy so it messed up. not much else I can say.

      11. Unconditional Love (7/10)
In the beginning she says 'you can give me diamonds' but it sound like she says 'you can get mcdonalds'. STRANGE!!!! Okay song, I guess.

      12. Every Part Of Me (6/10)
Violins in this song ruin it. but the baby laughs in the beginning and end are laugh. it's about her son 9or daughter) I think. Cute song. maybe I would like it better if i listened to it some more.......

Hope you liked my review! i kind of got lazy at the end, so it might not be as descriptive as I hoped, but I tried my best! Hope it helps. And overall, this album gets an (8.5/10) from me. Really good. It's a MUST BUY!

4 out of 5 stars SUCH A SHAME THAT PUBLIC PREJUDICE GOT IN HER WAY..........2006-11-10

I LIKE VICTORIA BECKHAM. I think she's EXTREMELY talented, she's nice and she's hella funny. Unfortunately, because of the prejudiced evil that is the British public, she really never got the chance to get what could have been an amazing solo career off the ground.

She's got some BRILLIANT tracks on here that unfortunately never saw the light of day; 'I'm That Kind Of Girl', 'Midnight Fantasy', 'Girlfriend', and a host of others, to name but a few.

The only qualm I have is her overdoing the 'slang' talk - i.e. 'Watchu Talkin' Bout'. That took it a little bit far for me, but otherwise, I think she did a great job, and it's a travesty that she didn't continue on to that second album, because based on what we heard from the double-sided single, it was something really worth looking forward to.

      4 out of 5 stars Victoria, Victoria.......2006-07-23

A glam woman, and she was a part of a revolutionary girl group phenomenon (saying that now seems silly, but think of it back then, and you'll remember how new it was, all the things they were doing.)
Now to the CD: I would give it 5, just cos I love her, but that would not be fair. Here is a rundown of each song, and how many stars I give each (out of 5):
1- Not Such An Innocent Girl- Fun song, very melodic, and an almost J-pop feel to the intro. Also, the video is adorable. (4)
2- A Mind Of Its Own- Very heartfelt. I am not a big fan of songs with spoken verses, but this one is very good. The video is really boring, but she looks glam. (4)
3- That Kind Of Girl- An odd place to put this early-80s themed ballad, but its still a cute song. I do tend to skip over this one often though. (2)
4- Like That- Fabulous. Edgy strings and drums, and the chorus is so catchy. Just glam. (5)
5- Girlfriend- Loved it when the CD came out. Now, it just sounds dated as a lot of pop songs in America from 01-03 sound kinda like this. (Then:5, Now:3)
6- Midnight Fantasy- One of the best songs on the album. It's a sultry lite-disco song, with a filtered bass and that signature Victoria harp. Later songs (Let Your Head Go, Love Letter) are a natural progression from this sound. Her voice is *the* perfect dance music voice. (5)
7- IOU- Though the lyrics are pretty, this song does tend to get old. Very quickly. (3)
8- No Trix, No Games- Sophistication and class. So posh. (5)
9- I Wish- So hot back then. It should have been the second single rather than AMOIO. (Then:5, Now:4)
10- Watcha Talkn Bout- Hands down the best song on the album. Underwater harps, and a hot beat. Plus, the lyrics are about Geri and it has the most attitude of all the tracks. (5+)
11- Unconditional Love- Another ballad that is *too* similar to 'IOU'. But the breakdown makes it better than 'IOU'. Pure fluffy pop balladry. Should have been done acoustically rather than with the same old strings though.(3)
12- Every Part Of Me- The only memorable ballad on the album. Very pretty, the melody is great, and the lyrics are sad. Again with the strings, though! So I give it a 4. (4)

Overall though, the album does shine, cos Victoria threw a product full of surprises at those harpy-critics. I was surprised myself when I first listened, although not by the ballads (sorry). It's a shame that 'Out Of Your Mind' was not included on this album, and that the producers and everyone involved didn't go for more of the 'Midnight Fantasy/Watcha Talkin Bout' vibe.

But I'm not trash-talking it. Hindsight aside, this CD is fun. (Four stars)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!!!! This is one of my favorite CD,s EVER.......2006-07-21

This Girl can sing, can dance, she can do it all!!!Midnight Fantasy is such a great son and so is I.O.U.This cd is WAY better than Geri's cd, Emmas cd, Mel C and Mel B CD.I Love this CD

      5 out of 5 stars wonderful album.......2006-07-16

at first, i didn't know victoria beckham well enough to judge her. i would have thought, oh, another britney spears pop person. however, the instant i listened to her songs, i loved it. even though i am pretty picky with music, i thought that this album was wonderful. it was quite catchy. i would recommend purchasing her album and her autobiography.

The trademark qualities of a Robert Shaw-trained chorus included perfect tonal blend and balance, expressive phrasing, and superb tuning. As an interpreter, Shaw hewed to the middle road, steering clear of eccentricities and honoring the composer's intentions. On this tribute disc, we hear these virtues coalesce in works such as Poulenc's austere Christmas hymn "O magnum mysterium," one of three settings of the text here. Shaw was at his best in works whose fervent spirituality he shared, and the selection from Rachmaninov's Vespers, with its repeated alleluias, is a highlight, both radiant and passionate. But then, virtually everything here is a highlight: the Schubert part song done to a turn with soft singing projected in rounded tones; the curve of "Wondrous Love"'s melody perfectly traced; and "Amazing Grace" in Shaw's arrangement all the more moving for its calm dignity. The longest piece, Górecki's Marian hymn "Totus tuus," is otherworldly in an enthralled reading that never loses focus. Like all of Shaw's Telarc recordings, the sonics are first-class. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing, amazing product.......2007-02-07

The only part of the CD I would quibble with is the selection from Rachmaninov's Vespers, but I'm really lucky and have heard that performed live several times and heard multiple recordings, and decided on one that I liked best early on.

If you aren't blown away by the performance of the Tallis, you'll probably still cry when you hear the Lauridsen later in the CD. One thing about this CD is that after hearing it, my standard for what I could expect in a recording became a lot higher.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-17

When Robert Shaw retired in 1988 as Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra he returned to the conducting of unaccompanied choral music, that he had been involved with in the Robert Shaw Chorale in the 1950's and early 60's.
The selections on this disc are taken from several different Telarc recordings that were made at summer festivals he directed during the last decade of his life.
The Poulenc "O Magnum Mysterium" is one of the four motets on a Christmas album made in 1989. "Wondrous Love", "Amazing Grace", and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Moanin' Dove" are from the collection of 'American Hymns and Spirituals', performed and recorded in 1992. Gorecki's motet "Totus Tuus" appeared on 'Evocation of the Spirit' recorded in 1994.
In the Summer of 1989, the first year of Shaw's choral festivals in France yielded an impressive array of unaccompanied music which included Rachmaninoff's 'Vespers' or 'All Night Vigil', Op.37, the 2 Thomas Tallis pieces and the two in Latin by Vittoria.
"Der Entfernten" comes from a collection of 'Schubert Songs' for Male Chorus taped in the Summer of 1992. Morton Luridsen's 'O magnum mysterium', the most recent composition on this disc as well as the last recorded (1997), was included on 'A Robert Shaw Christmas'.
It is interesting to note that there are no less than three settings of the anonymous medieval text "O Magnum Mysterium". Shaw, a deeply spiritual man, often lamented about the commercialism that had pervaded the celebraton of the American Christmas. He retained a sincere awe for the miraculous details of the Nativity story, and it was natural that he should return again to music having this text, with its wondrous mixture of the homespun and the mystical, the lowly and the most high.

This is a truly interesting variety of compositions featuring a diversified group of fine composers!!!!.Any choral group that Shaw conducted always sang with much emotion and always great skill. There is never a 'ragged' entrance OR exit; there is never poor balance between the voices; the diction is crisp and clear and never 'muddied'; and the sound is ethereally beautiful. I would have liked to know who the personnel were in each of his 2 groups on this disc, but they were not listed, so I guess I never will know. Just a fabulous recording!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-08-02

Who can listen to this without being humbled, yet enriched, as if walking through the courts of sacred and simple places?

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring for this Christian (Catholic).......2004-07-22

I'd swear that Robert Shaw must have visited heaven and come back to write his rendition of O Magnum Mysterium (particularly track #5 with the chamber singers). It's my favorite classical piece, especially among choral works. I'd love to be in a great gothic cathedral like Notre Dame or Cologne and hear this piece. Even though you'll likely only be hearing this recording through your headphones in your room, it'll take you to the cathedrals and heaven itself.

I read somewhere that Robert Shaw was deeply religious/spiritual. I have no reason to doubt this...his faith shines through on this disk. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling of God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away." - Revelation 21

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-02-10

In my choir at school, we are singing O Magnum Mysterium; I can't help from sinking into its soft harmonies. How to describe this feeling?--each bar more poignant than the last; dynamically profound; crystal clear tone; that clash between tenors in the chorus...it makes me believe in love and god all at once! Spectacular, this CD is--how lucky I am to have found it. Recommended to anyone with hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Great choral music CD.......2007-01-26

This CD is excellent - a "must have" for every collection. Beautiful voices, relaxing music.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-08

The pieces on these two discs are taken from over fifteen years of recording by the Tallis Scholars, startng with the now-famous recording of Allegri's 'Miserere' from 1980. Allegri lived well into the Baroque era, dying in 1562, Therefore, he did not write the 'Miserere' in renaissance polyphony; and his chordal structure leaned toward the Baroque.
Victoria's 8-part 'Ave Maria' and Palestrina's 'Sicut lilium' are both pieces iln a contemplative mood, the first making direct reference to the Virgin Mary, and the second indirect reference to her via the poetry of the 'Song of Songs'. The remaining selections on Disc l, maintain the consistent, intense sonority of Flemish polyphony.
Disc 2 falls into two parts. The pieces by Sheppard, Tallis,White and Cornysh come from the first half of the sixteenth century and are part of the 'English School' of writing. Here the music is made up of long lines, more notes than syllables, with the emphasis on the part-writing and not the harmonic background.
The second part of Disc 2 is Byrd's five-part Mass, which was written in the 1590's for a recusant Catholic community. Byrd's music has drawn closer to the Flemish style; that is imitative voice parts, largely syllabic in setting with the occasional examples of word-paintings, and the voice parts closer together. But the mood has a different intensity than the writing on Disc one; darker and more questioning. Never was polyphony more passionate than in Byrd's masses,of which the five-part is the crowning achievement.
The members of the Tallis Scholars vary from year to year, and the list of participating singers is included in the accompanying booklet; but it does not tell you which singers are singing each year. That bothered me somewhat because I like to know to whom I am listening specifically. It does mention, however, that the solo group in Allegi's 'Miserere' is Alison Stamp (treble), Michael Chance (countertenor) Jane Armstrong and Julian Walker.
The recording is outstanding in every way. Perfect balance between the voices, perfect emotional investment, flawless dicton and the most beautiful vocal sounds you will ever hear; just Two and One-half hours of pure pleasure!!!!!

      4 out of 5 stars Lovely!!!.......2006-06-02

This set of CDs is truly wonderful. I am fond of sacred choral music and purchased the CD mostly to obtain the recording of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere Mei." This song alone is worth buying the set. I heard it live by an excellent college choir in my hometown and immediately set out to find the best recording of it. Most buyers recommended this recording over the others. (By the way "Miserere Mei: by Gregorio is hard to find.) Additionally the other songs are also so relaxing, flowing, and meditative. I will be honest . . .the Tallis Scholars sing well but not as flawlessly as the Cambridge Singers. You will note that not every consanant is hit in unison, but this is not overly disturbing. (Still that is the only reason for giving four stars instead of five.) The sound is still lovely and the songs gorgeous. In Media Vita is another gorgeous song (first on second CD). If you haven't heard it, I'm sure you'll love the flowing melody!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but a little cold.......2006-02-06

The Tallis Scholars are the zenith of this type of singing, but sometimes they lack the vocal warmth that they probably could achieve if they were guided to do so. Still, this is a great CD, and even better for the 2 CDs of fine and uplifting singing.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Hits of a Pioneer Ensemble.......2005-09-27

For years, Tallis Scholars have been quietly revolutionizing our recovery of sacred music. This is their "greatest hits" collection and quite great indeed. The Miserere which begins the set is alone worth the price of the set. The only fault with it is that it is so startling, so obviously genuine, that you will still be hearing it as you play through the rest of the set. The Scholars' ongoing recovery project only proves how integral music is to the human psyche, how essential the sacred is to basic human sanity. And how the severence of the two in the public space and the popular imagination -- the sacred from music -- has severely damaged us all en masse.

Largely moribund since the mid-'60s, the Hollywood film musical has only occasionally piqued the interest of an ambitious filmmaker in the decades since. Nineteen eighty-two's transgender-themed, depression-era romp once again teamed director Blake Edwards with longtime musical collaborator Henry Mancini (whose work here alongside lyricist Leslie Bricusse netted him a Best Song Score Oscar ®). But the real news was Edwards's casting of screen musical legend Julie Andrews--his wife--in the typecasting-be-damned lead role of the down-on-her-luck singer who eventually triumphs by passing herself off as both sides of a female impersonator cabaret act. Mancini's score is as playful as the premise, lampooning everything from stuffy operatic clichés to the "hot jazz" of '30s Parisian cabaret with his deft melodic touch, while he and Bricusse serve up a spare, if nigh-perfect slate of songs to match. Highlighted by Andrews's diva-mocking "Cherry Ripe," sultry takes of "Le Jazz Hot" and "The Shady Dame from Seville," and the show-stopping "Crazy World," the soundtrack also gets masterful turns from fellow musical-comedy legend Robert Preston on the campy "Gay Paree" and an outtake of "You and Me"(a duet with Andrews) as well as Lesley Ann Warren's ditzy delight, "Chicago, Illinois." This remastered 20th-anniversary edition is also fleshed out by 10 previously unreleased cues from Mancini's evocative orchestral score and a rehearsal take of "Shady Lady from Seville." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, great soundtrack!.......2007-03-13

This is one of my favorite movies, and I'm not sure why it took me so long to think to look for the soundtrack! I've had it for about a month now, and I love it.

Julie Andrews and Robert Preston are flawless (as usual), and it's just a lot of fun~particularly the rehearsal of Preston doing "The Shady Dame From Seville". I'm also a big fan of their duet "You and Me". All of the songs are wonderful showcases for Andrews' voice, showing her range and also various styles~from Cherry Ripe to Le Jazz Hot. What an amazing singer!

This would be a wonderful addition to to your CD collection for the musical prowess of Julie Andrews alone, but the soundtrack is a must for any fan of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars A good score by the great Mancini.......2007-01-27

This musical presents some of the best songs by Henry Mancini, sung by
the fabulous Julie Andrews. The song "Crazy World" is featured two times,
one vocal, and the other, excellent, by the orchestra. A great purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Only Bright Spot: Henry Mancini.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini died way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

By 1982, Mancini was in very late career and doing a lot more TV material. In this soundtrack, you can discern his contribution most strongly in "Chicago."

He;s still 'got it,' for sure, but his time is running out by 1982...

      5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2005-10-27

I really only got this for one song but I love this whole thing. So for once I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone should have it.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate Julie Andrews musical.......2004-03-05

VICTOR/VICTORIA is most probably Julie Andrews' most-accomplished and effective movie musical performance. Singing the sparkling songs by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, Miss Andrews is beautifully showcased.

VICTOR/VICTORIA is based on the little-known German fim 'Viktor und Viktoria', and recounts the story of a penniless opera singer, stranded in Paris, called Victoria Grant. Victoria makes a friend in nightclub entertainer Toddy (Robert Preston - THE MUSIC MAN, MACK AND MABEL) who suggests that she masquerade as a gay polish female impersonator. The ruse works, and 'Victor' is the toast of Paris, until Victoria falls in love with a handsome Chicago mobster called King Marchan (James Garner). Adding complications is King's ditzy moll Norma (Lesley Ann Warren - CINDERELLA, THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE).

The score for VICTOR/VICTORIA runs the gamut from the showstoppers ("Le Jazz Hot") to the torchy ballads ("Crazy World"). Other standout numbers include Robert Preston's charming "Gay Paree" as well as Lesley Ann Warren's racy and raucus salute to "Chicago Illinois".

      Highly-recommended.
