"Battlement" (1979) is a legendary record featuring unknown German musicians, working and playing with a sense of perfection in the wake of GENESIS. The vocals, sung by Frenchman Frédéric JOOS turn out to be (Very) close to Peter GABRIEL's. NEUSCHWANSTEIN creates music with the same complexity, intensity and power as their famous elders used to do. The songs are totally original and innovative though, with some KING CRIMSONesque skid. A pure jewel ! The Musea reissue has been fully remixed so as to offer a sound quality as good as possible. Note that the first track features ex-THE SCORPIONS drummer Hermann RAREBELL, while the last track is a magnificent 8 minute song, with one of the musicians on vocals. You cannot afford to miss that !

      The obvious comparisons to Genesis begin with the French lead vocalist who sounds very English and very Gabriel. But these German musicians also replicate the Genesis musical sound in most of these 7-8 minutes songs - without ever ripping off any of Genesis' melodies or riffs. (I should note that the title song is actually sung by the bass player in a more Eloy-ish sounding manner.) This is a real joy to sit down and listen to straight through; no songs rated below an 8 for my tastes. Surprise, surprise - the production is not top-notch, but certainly nothing to complain about. Compare this group's style also to England's "Garden Shed".

      If you loved early Genesis, this is about as close as you can get to the Rael thing.

      I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
      Music quality = 9/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 9/10.
      Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.9 ("4-1/2 stars")

      For anyone who loves the early to mid 70s period of Genesis, this is a must have! The sound is more like the Wind and Wuthering or Trick of the Tail period, but the vocals are pure Peter Gabriel. I was playing this at work, and my colleague, who is a big Genesis fan, stopped dead in his tracks. He would have bet money it was Peter Gabriel singing...he thought it was some lost Genesis album. Usually with German singers you can detect a German accent, but not here. The guitar is very Steve Hackett-like, the early keyboards, the flute, everything is wonderful. I'm so glad this was re-released in 2001. I just wish they did another album. You won't be disappointed.

      The German version of Genesis. Absolutely fantastic tunes to give you goosepimples.A touch of Camel in places with a vocalist that sounds like Peter Gabriel. A must for all Genesis fans
