4 out of 5 stars A great New Jack album.......2005-12-02

Yet Run-DMC had turmoil and was knocked off the charts by West Coast greats N.W.A.,Too-short,and Ice-T,they would a comeback during the New Jack era in 1990 with the heavy New Jack Hit "Pause",one the greatest songs on the album. So if your looking for some New Jack Swing from Run-DMC,I suggest Back From Hell.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Album in a Time of Turmoil for the Band---.......2003-04-01

This album was released in 1990. By this time, the (undeserved) street backlash to TOUGHER THAN LEATHER gave the group a bad reputation in hip-hop-only circles. Also, Rap had splintered off into several sub-factions: The success of West coast and Southern rap acts weakened the New York-centric stranglehold on the rap scene. Gangster rap, as epitomized by N.W.A., Ice T & the Geto Boys, made national headlines, and managed to get major sales regardless of limited radio & video airplay. The sexually explicit tales of Too Short and 2 Live Crew brought a decidedly blue flavor to rap, while achieving similar sales results. New York's newer Rap acts, like Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane brought updated topics and influences ranging from The Black Panthers to the Nation of Islam.
All this, combined with the fact that the hip-hop 'freshness' timetable is ridiculously accelerated, made New York traditionalists like Run DMC seem, well, old. "Pause" was a comeback single that hit in 1989, that adopted the then-hot New Jack Swing style of R&B production. For the album, the band self-produces for the first time (longtime collaborators Larry Smith and Davy D work on a few cuts, but keyboardist Stanley Brown has the most prominent role), and eschews the rock aesthetic that they pioneered (which by that time, had been virtually abandoned for funk & soul samples) and goes full-throttle into Teddy Riley territory (indeed, Aaron Hall shows up on "Don't Stop").. The results are mixed.
The band sure curses a lot more, which is either a sign of the band's frustrations at the time, or a pained attempt at being contemporary: The title track "Back from Hell" is a series of anecdotes about thugs going into or getting released from prison. There are some vague guitar licks scratched in, and that's about the most of the rock-rap fusion to be found on this release. People expecting "Raising Hell part 2" will be disappointed. Most of the songs would be okay for anyone else, but Run DMC fans demand more.

Arista Records bought the Profile catalog in the late 90's and re-released the standard versions of Run DMC's studio LPs. However, Back from Hell was not included in the 2004 expanded versions of the group's albums. At the time of the album's original promotion, there was a groundbreaking 12-inch/EP-only remix of the single "Back From Hell" featuring Ice Cube and Public Enemy's Chuck D. That makes for at least one potential bonus cut that could be included for a proper re-release.

5 out of 5 stars Whole New Run DMC.......2002-11-28

I have to give credit to these guys because this album begins the social political issue messages in Hip Hop! Caution: This album is strait Hip Hop, not rock! So, if u like Run DMC's strait Hip Hop, buy this Cd, if you don't, then get there other classics!

4 out of 5 stars RUN DMC IS BACK AGAIN.......1999-07-04

This group is definitely hot. RUN DMC should be inducted into the "hip hop hall of fame", no doubt. I been listening to Run DMC for years (even before the Krush Groove Era). These fellas has not lost their hip hop edge. Hard Core beats and tossed lyrics was always a hit and Run DMC mastered that part of the RAP GAME. Eventhough, It's been a while since their last recording Run DMC is still my favorite. "The KINGS FROM QUEENS" is still hotter than ever.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely a cool album. Peep the skills!!.......1999-03-24

"THE AVE" is definitely a head-rocker, my favorite joint on the album. Slept on by fans even more than Tougher than Leather, but deserves a listen, even if only as an alternative to the often trite product coming out today...

5 out of 5 stars First Album First Masterpeice.......1999-08-17

The first Esham album ever!!! This is one of the best albums from him with classics like Red Rum and Some Old Wicketsh*t I highly recomend this album for all true acid rap heads

5 out of 5 stars Only 17 and still kickin'.......1999-07-24

This classic blends acid rap with Esham's suicidalist rhymes. The lyrics are origonal and flow smoothly. "Some old Wicket $h!t" and "4 all my suicidalists" are trend setting songs that will never die.

5 out of 5 stars an addition to my last review.......1999-06-18

ok this is jus an addition to tha last review, esham wrote the songs when he was like 14-15! yes thats like when all the other rappers were still in skool, esham was out writin traks, an this cd sold about 100,000 copies in itz first year!

5 out of 5 stars ESHAM's first L.P........1999-04-17

ESHAM's Boomin "words from hell 1990" was not the best, but in 1990 what do you expect?? This cd is a classic to all detroit fans, they all have this somewhere. This cd is EVIL theres no doubt about that. ESHAM threw some dope lyrics together, back then when he was extremely young. This cd is a definite add-on to the esham collection if you dont have it.

4 out of 5 stars BOTTOM POSSE..A BATON ROUGE CLASSIC !!!.......2006-03-14

I HAD NEVER HEARD THIS CD UNTIL RECENTLY (2006)...THIS CD HAS GOT SOME CRAZY KEYBOARDS GOIN' ON!!!..THIS IS THAT SICK / HARDCORE GANGSTA RAP...THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE...NOT ALL THIS CRUNK / R&B STUFF OUT TODAY....PURE SICK BEATS, W/ CRAZY LYRICS...SILKY SLIM IS AN UNDERGROUND LEGEND IN LOUISIANA, AND IT'S A SHAME THAT CALI. HEADS DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIM, BECAUSE THIS CD PUTS ALL THAT WATERED-DOWN SCC/LBC RAP THAT WAS COMIN' OUT IN THE 90'S TO SHAME!!!!...GRAB THIS IS YOU CAN FIND IT...IT'S HARD TO COME BY.......

**** I ALSO GIVE THIS CD PROPS FOR HAVING AN OUTRO THAT BRINGS UP THE IN-JUSTICE THAT HAPPENED WHEN A WHITE, HOME-OWNER KILLED A JAPANESE EXCHANGE STUDENT WHO CAME TO HIS HOUSE FOR DIRECTIONS, TRYING TO FIND A COSTUME PARTY...SHOT HIM DEAD ON HIS FRONT LAWN!!!!...AND WAS THEN FREED TO GO BY THE BATON ROUGE COURT SYSTEM (THIS MAY SOUND FAMILIAR, AS IT DID MAKE IT'S WAY INTO THE NATIONAL NEWS..)...NOT ENOUGH TOPICS ARE BROUGHT UP THESE DAYS...I HOPE IN THE FUTURE, ARTISTS WILL TALK ABOUT THE IN-JUSTICE THAT TOOK PLACE AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA, WHICH WAS JUST ONE CASE OF THE BLATANT DISREGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE (ESPECIALLY POOR, AFRICAN-AMERICANS) SHOWN BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT...

Got this at Amoebia just now, and listening to it on the headphones...

Disco Rick is pretty angry and profane, with some hardcore rips on wack rappers (Kid N Play, etc)...

Musically, he's got a good portion of electro / miami bass on this LP, along with some wac RnB stuff ("Girl Let Me Lick You").

Best song is Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle, although if you can find a remix on Luke's "Bass Hits From Da Bottom" Vol 1 you'd be better off.

The lyrics are very interesting, subtle and strangely refreshing. They songs stay with you, especially "Vacances d'Enfer". It is a classy blues CD with excellent harp work, low down grit (like in "Ode to Muddy"), zydeco, swing and New Orleans grooves. Also the vocal performance is probably the best that Forest has ever recorded. Having read the book "Letter From Hell" made the music all that more enjoyable. As a musician and songwriter Andy J Forest keeps getting better and he stands further and further apart from the vast reservoir of blues artists on the scene today. Get it, Tara G.

4 out of 5 stars More music than original LP release, but no Takemitsu!.......2007-07-14

Unfortunately, this 2-CD set appears to be unavailable now. But if you can find it, don't hesitate to purchase it. If you loved the 80s TV series, this captures many of the musical moments that made the series so unique.

As many reviewers have mentioned - yes, Age of Aquarius does not fit in well; the segues between selections range from being odd to downright annoying; and yes there is much more music represented here than on the original LP, including the Vangelis track that he composed for the second Special Edition of Cosmos that aired as a mini-series several years after the original series aired.

One thing that reviewers so far have overlooked is that one track from the original LP somehow did not make it onto this 2CD set - Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu's short track "Inside the Heart of the Universe". A brief and somewhat odd piece of music, it still has a mystical beauty to it. It also gave me reason to know Takemitsu's name when I was six or seven years old, growing up watching the Cosmos series and enjoying the original LP. I grew up to be a professional musician, and tried to find out just where this track came from. It took a lot of research, but I found that it was from a soundtrack called Legacy For the Future. It was released on LP in the early 1970s, and was only briefly released on CD by Deutsche Grammophon in 1996 and I was lucky to find a copy (the whole CD is wonderful!). Anyway, this probably more info than most readers care for, but for any who remember this cool piece of music and lament that it did not make it to this 2CD set - you aren't the only ones who noticed this!

There is a CD release of the original LP tracks - right now there appear to be several copies available from Marketplace sellers. So those who are dissatisfied with the 2CD release, or wish to experience both on CD, can purchase it while supplies last. The artwork is different from, and not as breathtaking as the original LP, but the music is the same. And the Takemitsu piece is on that one!

5 out of 5 stars EL MEJOR SOUNDTRACK.......2006-11-13

4 out of 5 stars Great music from Cosmos, wish there were no interruptions........2006-08-16

This newer two CD soundtrack of Carl Sagan's Cosmos has more music than the old vinyl LP, which I liked, but I thought the old record arranged the selections in a more logical, listenable order. The "environmental" sound effects are not all musical The crane was the only bird's call I heard and unfortunately no songbirds were included, though the sounds of other not so musical animals were included (e.g., the lion and zebra). The saw and bulldozer were annoying. There was certainly an attempt at convey an environmental message, but why permit noise to intrude on the music?

There's a moving version of "Pachelbel's Canon", J. S. Bach's "The Sea Named Solaris", selecions from Holst's "The Planets" and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". and many of the other classical music tracks used in the series. These works sound even better than they did on the old LP. This makes the album well worth owning, though it would have been better if those who designed it had followed the concept of the old LP more closely.

4 out of 5 stars A musical analogue of the TV series .......2005-04-08

I am astounded that everyone who disliked the track segues on this release apparently didn't read the any of the liner notes or apparently watch the COSMOS TV series itself. Like the TV series, this soundtrack musically covers the origins of the Universe, the development of stars, planets, life, evolution, civilization, scientific discoveries and meditations on humanity's fate and place in the universe. A quick glance at the back cover and liner notes clearly illustrate this.

Perfectionists are advised that if they really want the actual soundtrack music to the series, simply purchase the DVD box set. There is a music only track on each DVD for each program. As broadcast, most of the pieces were multiply re-arranged, cut, trimmed and even made into different versions, so you'll not hear exactly what was broadcast even with an original recording. Besides, many pieces were omitted from the CD due to copyright, time constraints, etc.

That having been said, the Age of Aquarius cut is awful, regardless of whether it was in the TV show or not. Omitting Beethoven for that? Ugh. That alone makes me give it a 4/5.

3 out of 5 stars The Music of Cosmos - To Buy - or Not to Buy.......2004-12-26

I want to buy this album badly, but some of the previous comments on the 'in-between effects' scares me off. I will probably buy it anyway, but if I hated the extra stuff, I would transfer the CD's to my computer, then burn each track back onto new CD's. If I did this, would it get rid of the effects, or are they integral to the tracks. Has anyone tried to do this?
