As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

It is appropriate that one of the many timeless tunes on the debut Captain Beyond record is called "I Can't Feel Nothin'." Simply put the first listen to the 1972 album will leave you wiped out. Thirteen tracks blending from one to another will rip your guts out with enough firepower to rock a city block.

To give you an indication what Capricorn Records thought of Captain Beyond, the label's forte was an outlet for southern rock artists. Once the executives heard the band not only had the pedigree with former Deep Purple front man Rod Evans, Bobby Caldwell on drums (Johnny Winter), and one time Iron Butterfly personal Lee Dorman (bass), and Larry Reinhardt (guitar) but an arsenal of material to take over a small country, the deal was done.

If you appreciate the mark Evans left on the first three studio albums for Deep Purple this venture will only escalate it. Easily one of the most underrated singers from the 60's and 70's. Maybe some had trepidation that he could pull off the vocals on the rock and roll battlefield but any doubt was erased the first time the Captain landed on the turntable.

Mesmerization Eclipse, Raging River Of Fear, Frozen Over, and Astral Lady are four of the tracks that reach for your lungs. The sheer power and aggression of the musicians is a tribute to the way they crafted the journey. At times you are on a heavy metal rocket and then you soar into the land of progressive rock. The genius here is not one track is over four minutes! How can such intense sounds resonate without reaching for the eight to ten minute period? By blending the tunes into each other think of the record not as thirteen separate short tracks but one thirty-five minute epic. From the sun to the stars and back, the Captain has taken your mind.

Over the years it is interesting how many fans of Captain Beyond do not own the two Warhorse albums (Self-titled and Red Sea both with amazing bonus tracks) featuring Rod Evan's Deep Purple friend Nick Simper and how many Warhorse fans have never owned a Captain Beyond recording. If you are into one of the bands you will find appreciation for the other.

I'm only 25 years old. I wasn't around when this album came out. My parents don't know who they are either. Luckily, I've had an obsession with classic rock for over 20 years now, which means since Kindergarten! I found out about Captain Beyond thanks to the internet.

What's amazing is how a classic rock band that doesn't get any attention on the radio stations somehow managed to gather up many fans and reviews here on amazon. That's truly incredible.

Once you listen to the music on this album, you'll quickly understand why so many people make a big deal over them. The Who may be the loudest classic hard rock band, and Black Sabbath may slide in to second place. But Captain Beyond is clearly third.

There's only so much you can do to a hard rock formula before it all starts sounding the same, yet somehow these guys had a certain talent to make their music sound like NOTHING anybody else was doing at the time. It's so loud, and instantly enjoyable. This is what you call "in your face" rock and roll. It's gotta be some of the loudest classic rock ever put on record. Furthermore, the music is very heavy and catchy, with a strong focus being on the drumming. It's out of this world.

Captain Beyond really does deserve to be remembered.

To those of recent years that have commented APPROVINGLY of this first Captain Beyond album, You're right on !!!
I haven't commented till now, but I could have many years ago. I can't add anything to the heartfelt and well-put comments on this band's excellence. Obviously, some of us are of this 2nd half-century mark that have been around long enough to have heard, listened, and appreciated the likes of Deep Purple mark I and Iron Butterfly through to their Metamorphasis; enough to appreciate Rod Evans, Rhino, and the incomparable bassist Lee Dorman in a band together and with as good of results as they get here. I'm listening to it right now, 35 years later, and am still blown away. They just DO NOT make music like this anymore.

Greatest hard rock album of all time.......2007-04-10

If you love great riffs and excellent musicianship then buy this CD now.
It is over 30 years old but still sounds fresh. From Bobby Caldwell's opening drum beat to the very end this album is a classic. There are no comparisons to be made just buy it and crank it up loud. Soon you too will be "Dancing Madly Backwards"!

If you don't have the first album than by all means buy that now. If you like it, which you will, than you may consider buying the second and third. They all have a different feel and production but are all excellent in their own right. The first Captain Beyond album is one of the best hard rock albums ever made so check it out. Sufficiently Breathless is very, very good just not as hard as the first. Creative song writing and talented musicianship throughout. You won't be disapointed.

I purchased the first Captain Beyond Album when I was about 16 I guess.
At the time they did not have digital cd's and sometimes albums this old could be hard to find. When I was about 25 I found a japanese copy of this album in an import sale bin for @ 10.00. I was surprised because I had never seen another Captain Beyond album.
I still have this sam Japanese copy. I'm 39. I have kept this album all these years in mint condition for one reason. I's great! I think it's one of rock's best unknown moments. There's not a bad song on it. True it is different from the first one. But all in all I think it outways the first in creativety and even music ability. It is a fine work with fine playing. I would recomend this album to any fan of 70's acid rock.
It does have what you need and more.

Ultra-luscent Magnetism !.......2006-03-22

A lot of fans dislike Sufficiently Breathless for the wrong reasons. Original drummer Bobby Caldwell is one of the most underrated drummers in rock. He had the chops of Ginger Baker and the precision of a metronome. When he quit after the first album, the band replaced him with a subpar drummer. Consequently, the second album sounded like what Disreali Gears would have sounded like if Ginger Baker had quit the Cream and been replaced by Nick Mason or Buddy Miles (not that they are incompetant drummers, merely unsuited to a high energy power trio). In late 1973, the original quartet reformed and toured, performing some of the Sufficiently Breathless material. With Caldwell back in the drummer's seat, the second album material really cooked (as evidenced on the excellent quality audience recorded bootleg It's Our Lives).
That said, the music on Sufficiently Breathless is, in some ways, better than that on the legendary first album, which was mostly a catalog of heavy rock riffs strung together into a sort of hard rock suite. The down side of this is that it has a certain sterile, mechanical, repititous quality to it, while the second album actually has songs on it. The band also spiced up it's sound with Latin rhythms and jazz, while maintaining it's psychedelic space rock theme. If you're a tie-dyed in the wool hippie, ya hadda love these guys for refusing to douse the incense and black light in the era of navel-gazing singer-songwriters and camp 50s nostalgia!
To clarify some misconceptions about this album, I read somewhere that the music was composed by Dorman, Rhino, and Evans, but Lee Dorman was given exclusive songwriting credit because Rhino and Evans were still in respective litigation with the managments of Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple. Also, I heard that Rod Evans quit the band in the midst of recording and had to be coaxed back into the studio to complete the album, which is why it's running time is so short.

I'm amazed by the people who were disappointed with this album because its not the same as the first one; they're usually the first to criticize a band for repeating themselves.

Anyway, this is not as proggy as their first album, but that doesn't mean its not one of the best albums of the early seventies. It does have a slight Santana quality to it, which considering the timeframe in which it was recorded, is not a bad thing. Where the debut album found these guys stretching themselves musically, showing off their prowess as musicians, with good results. This album is more a paen to the times; its a much more lyrical, song oriented album, showing off their writting abillity. And these guys had a keen ear for melody. Songs like 'Everything's Circle', 'Bright Blue Tango', 'Starglow Energy', and 'Sufficiently Breathless' are superbly written and beauitfully performed and were probably incredible heard live (if that ever happened, I don't know).

A vastly underappreciated album, even by fans of the band. Its a must have for classic rock fans who love those undiscovered gems. This album is an ode for just 'chillin out'.

Captain Beyond - 'Dawn Explosion' (One Way Records).......2006-01-22

Originally released in 1977,this was Captain's third and final record.I've heard several old time fans comment how this effort was pretty lame.Can't say that I at all agree with that.In fact,I was sort of impressed with 'Dawn...'.Vocalist Willy Daffern replaces Rod Evans,but I personally felt he had fit in pretty well there.Tunes that I liked best were "Do Or Die",the heavily played "Icarus","Midnight Memories" and the album's finale "Space Reprise".Decent '70's hard rock for the picking.

Dawn Explosion (1977.) Captain Beyond's third album.

Following the release of Captain Beyond's second album, 1973's Dawn Explosion, the band disbanded. It was disappointing that they disbanded, because they had some serious musical talent. Fortunately though, the band got back together in the latter half of the seventies. Lee Dorman, Rhino, and even Bobby Caldwell, who had left the band after the first LP, were back together and ready to rock again. Unfortunately, Rod Evans would not return to the band. Instead, the band recruited new vocalist Willy Daffern. Despite the abscence of Rod Evans, is the band still good? Read on for my review.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, this IS a very good classic rock album, but it's just not up to anything that the band recorded in the past. Although I feel Willy Daffern is a solid vocalist through and through, I also feel that the abscence of Rod Evans severely hurt the band's creativity. Still, the band manages to create an excellent album that explores a plethora of rock stylings. One of the most interesting things about Captain Beyond is that they sound like a cross between so many different bands - One one song they may be sounding like America, but on the next they may be sounding like Black Sabbath! How many bands do you know that can explore so many different stylings so well? In the end, this is a very good album, but it just falls flat when you compare it to any of the previous releases from Captain Beyond.

Currently (as of June 5, 2004), the Captain Beyond catalogue is now out of print in America. Hopefully the band's catalogue will be reissued shortly - I think everyone should listen to these guys at least once. No one should have to go through hell just to find these albums - music this good should be readily available.

Even without Rod Evans, Captain Beyond managed to shell out a pretty good album. Take my advice, though - If you're new to the band, start with their 1972 self-titled debut. If you start with one of the band's other releases, it may give you the wrong impression about their music. It's best to get and listen to their albums in order. Accordingly, this is the one that you should get last. This IS a good album - it just isn't up to the standards of their earlier stuff.

Dawn Explosion has it's moments.......1999-05-21

The last and best song on the album is Oblivion, an appropriately named instrumental that is the last time we hear from Rhino, Dorman, and Caldwell - three awsome muscians who's talents shine in albums one and two. Unfortunately, Dawn Explosion most often misses the energy and creativity of the first two albums. Oblivion...an appropriate name for their wherabouts... until 1999!!!! Rhino,( now Ryno) and Caldwell are back with a new Captain Beyond band, currently beginning a tour in Europe, with rumors of an album to be released this year!!

All three Captain Beyond albums are true gems (Captain Beyond #1)(Sufficiently Breathless #2) (Dawn Explosion #3). The albums take you on a journey and make you feel like you've been somewhere and done something. This to me is always a sign of great musicians. I thoroughly enjoy my CD's and play them often and LOUD. I never tire of them, and they always lift my spirits. Buy all three so you have the collection, you won't be dissappointed. Every song is a true work of art and the first album is a masterpiece. If you are interested,visit the Captain Beyond webpages on the net, they are really cool and you can learn more about the band then and now. Yes, now! I've learned that the heros are back!!! Bobby Caldwell (drums), Larry Reinhardt (Rhino)(guitar), Dan Frye (Keyboards), Jimmy Interval (lead vocals), and Jeff (Count) Artabasy (bass guitar). A new line up for the 90's! But to buy the CD's, get them at Amazon, it's easy/quick. This time around lets hope that Captain Beyond is highly recognized as they most definitely deserve it! Ive never heard Captain Beyond although I have heard of them...Ive listened to Rhino play up close and personal and he wears his music like a second skin...undoubtly one of the greats that was overlooked by circumstance...but now is his second chance...the band as a whole at times had a flavor a kin to that of "sound garden" and other times "the Grateful Dead" Very orginal content, Its time Captain Beyond Gets regonized. Good Music never grows old........

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09

You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)

nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15

As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.

The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.

Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05

If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.

Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.

A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.

History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.

What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.

But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.

With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

A great update.......2004-05-01

I am a long-time fan of the original Captain Beyond record. I can not say enough about the songs, the drumming of Bobby Caldwell, and on and on.
Sadly, neither of the band's follow-ups approached the intensity of the debut.
Neither does this record, but I didn't expect it to. There aren't many drummers in Caldwell's league.
What it does do is provide a fresh listen to some old favourites. Some of the songs are done more or less as straight covers of the originals, others are somewhat different arrangements.
I highly recommend it to any fan of the original record. Or to anyone who likes their rock on the heavy side.

Thousand days of yesterdays... and it still sounds great........2000-06-11

This rather strange concept was to gather Swedish and other European rock bands to do a tribute to the well respected but somewhat obscure debut by Captain Beyond.

Captain Beyond was a minor "super-group" in the early 70s that gathered together ex-members of Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Johny Winter. In the words of CBs drummer (the incredable Bobby Caldwell) and guitarist (the innovative Rhino) the purpose of the band was to "simply explore the various schemes of odd time signatures and arrangements." On their debut they were dramatically sucessful.

They fused together hard rock with progressive and jazz time signatures to form an accessible, but challenging brand of rock-n-roll. But if you're interested in this cd, you probably already knew that...On to the disc.

As on all tributes, some of the material is better than others. However, there is more consistancy on this one than most. Perhaps that is due to the unusual nature of this tribute, which uses a differant band for each song, despite the cd being based on two side long suites. Aside from the Flower Kings, I had never heard of any of the bands that perform here. I must admit I was a bit concerned when I saw that the first band was called Pentagram (who do a great version of Dancing Madly Backwords). But I digress..

Most of the music focuses on the rock side of CB and sticks fairly close to the original arrangements. This works pretty well, although the vocal (and lyrical) interpretations at times feel very European and take some adjusting too. (Actually, some of the attempts at the lyrics are comical).

On the other hand, the two exceptions to this are probably my favorite tracks on the cd. These are: The Flower Kings doing a long, slowed version of Raging River of Fear, and Orchid Leaves doing Starglow Energy (its a bonus track, I know it wasn't on the original CB album) as an acoustic guitar piece with a female vocalist.

Also interesting are two other bonus tracks sung in Swedish.The title track, done by Five Fifteen with guest Nik Turner of Hawkwind, is also excellant. Overall this cd is a well intentioned and mostly sucessful tribute to a band that deserved much more recognition.

Having just turned 50 years old last month, Ive been going through some of my old tunes & just basically going down memory lane.
I was listening to my CD copies of Captain Beyond, Debut Album & Sufficiently Breathless, & then turned to my European Tribute Album (CD) & I heard the Dawn Explosion cut with Willie Daffern & it sounded kinda cool so I thought Id go ahead & purchase a CD of the third ( and mostly lame ) attempt.
Then I saw Amazon wanted $50!!! I just laughed my geezered self into a coughing fit! $50 bucks is soooooooooo out of line!
Im a true Captain Beyond fan & I have 2 vinyl copies of both of the first two albums in excellent condition. One of the debuts has the original 3D cover art & they are all prized possessions.
Where Dawn Explosion has 2 fairly good songs on it, the rest of the album did not measure up to the former two albums & dosent stand the test of time as a stand alone effort.
Even Sufficiently Breathless is a pale comparison to Captain Beyonds Debut Album.
Id love to know how many people would spend $50 on Dawn Explosion. I gotta bridge Im tryin' sell if youre interested!!!

The third Captain Beyond album comes back to the format the band used on their debut, though not so successfully; they are back as a trio with a vocalist, without the keyboards and latin percussion section. "If You Please" sounds like something from Sufficiently Breathless and "Midnight Memories" is a throwaway (except for its unusual chord progression), but the rest of the album rocks, though not like their first album. "Breath of Fire, Part 1" kicks serious ass, but the highlight is "Fantasy," which is on the same level as "Dancing Madly Backward" or "Mesmerization Eclipse" from the first record. Overall, this is serious hard rock, highly recommended.

Third Album, Not Bad, But..........2005-04-09

Just received Dawn of Creation, listened to it, and went right back to listening to CB's first two recordings--to me, the debut and the follow-up present the band in the best way. Not that Dawn is a bad listen, it's just the weakest effort of the three, I think. Rod Evans who sang on the first two CB albums (and first three Deep Purple albums) unfortunately can't be heard on Dawn (Willy Daffern is the Lead Singer). The songs Fantasy and Breath of Fire, Part 1 & 2, are pretty cool and hard-driving Rock.

Quite a step down from the first album........2002-09-07

Captain Beyond's third album, DAWN EXPLOSION (1977), was released four years after their second one, the Latin-tinged SUFFICIENTLY BREATHLESS. Absent for the second album, original drummer Bobby Caldwell returned, vocalist Willy Daffern stepped in for Rod Evans, and the group was reborn as a power foursome.

Unfortunately--though not a bad album--DAWN EXPLOSION is far less energetic, even quiescent or reserved compared with the first two. "Fantasy" is really the only cut on the album that somewhat approaches the band's previous energy.

I'll get right to the point. The first album, simply entitled CAPTAIN BEYOND (1972), is the one you must have. From the opening drum intro to the final tirade of chords at the very end, the first album is no common rock 'n' roll experience. Indeed, the first album is a monster. Bobby Caldwell's drumming alone will stupefy you. You won't believe the energy the band produces, though it's never reckless. The music is well thought out. It's classy. They have finesse. They'll blow your mind!

So get DAWN EXPLOSIN if you like. Get SUFFICIENTLY BREATHLESS if you like. They are enjoyable albums. But remember: You must get that incredible first album.
