About the Artist
The first CD release by Detour is self-titled. They are a blues-influenced rock band that is an unexpected DETOUR from mainstream rock. The band was born in New York City after a tireless search for musicians that could create it's distinctive sound. Now they are finally able to express their music through their combined talents.Steve Berman fills out the band in three ways. His fascination with the blues pushed him onto the stage. His prior musical experiences helped him to develop the angst-ridden sexuality that is so evident in his singing, while his blues background turned him into a rock-steady rhythm guitarist, a passionate harmonica player, and a soulful composer..The lead guitarist, Mike Smiddy, has a playing style that is very much rooted in the blues. One reviewer from the Musician's Exchange described his solos as 'vibrant'. His talents don't end there, though; he is also the primary composer, as well as the producer of the album.Chris Lewis is the bassis! t, and occasionally does some lead singing for the band. His experiences, spanning many years and many musical styles, have given his playing and singing an arrogant assurance that asserts itself well onstage.Neil Kirby, the drummer, is the most experienced of the four musicians. His enormous talent and jazz training puts an innovative spin on traditional rock and blues drumming patterns. He was fortunate enough to have backed up some notable musicians, including Meat Loaf and Jimmy Webb. The three composers' writing styles are just as diverse as their playing techniques. Mike's style of writing is exemplified in 'Broken Box', a song that is engaging and forceful, but never typical. Chris' music, on the other hand, seems to vibrate from within. In his two songs, 'T-Square' and 'The Loner', he uses unusual melodies to put over his insightful lyrics. Steve writes about the wrecks and raptures of the heart. His song, 'Let It Ride', expresses the melancholy anger that everyone has ! felt at some time, though they may never admit it to themselves. Others of his songs, such as 'High Cost', explore the lust and fantasy that is found in love. These three writers' efforts, in combination, make the band's music unique because they make it possible to have a cohesive unit without anyone having to sacrifice his individuality.

Album Description

The music on the album is British Powerpop from the late 70's, the songs were our live set playing with bands such as The Jam, The Buzzcocks, XTC, The rezillos, and many gigs on our own. We are now playing again and have just returned from Tokyo.

Album Description

Full title - Fast Cars - Coming...Ready Or Not! Fast Cars were one of the most underrated bands from Manchester scene in the late 70s. They played with XTC, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, The Fall, The Rezillos and supported The Jam. Their brilliant debut single 'The Kids Just Wanna Dance' picked up daytime Radio One play and they were almost signed by The Jams A&R man at Polydor. Of Course, the music has a nasty habit of turning it's back on some great bands and sadly this is what happened, in the early 80s the band split, disillusioned with all the bullshit that the industry was throwing up. 16 original powerpop tunes plus two covers, Bowies 'Suffragette City' & the Holland/Holland/Dozier number 'This Old Heart Of Mine'. Detour Records. 2001.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top pop punk from England.......2006-01-15

This CD is an amazing find, I'd only heard of "The kids just wanna dance" before cause that is always listed a classic from the day. Fast Cars are one of the original pop punk bands playing the style 20 years before Green Day etc !!! Tracks like "Bombed our school" "Marching as to war" are just as relevant today, "Marching" could be a theme tune for Iraq !!!

Hope someone can find more from where this came from, truly 5 star pop punk !!!

5 out of 5 stars A Power Pop Classic!.......2005-10-12

I've never written a review on Amazon, and I'm only writing one now because I find it disheartening an album this good has no reviews.

At first, what struck me about the album is how much it sounded like The Exploding Hearts, as if the Fast Cars were trying to fill the void left by the Hearts' tragic demise. Which might have been the case, except for the fact that the Fast Cars made their mark in the '70s!

The songs are loud and catchy, but, similar to the Hearts, the sound is dirtier and more roughhewn than power pop songs such as Cheap Trick's "Surrender," but this only adds to the charm of the Fast Cars and sets them apart from their peers.

So if you like The Exploding Hearts, '70s punk or power pop in general, the Fast Cars are worth checking out. The album price is worth it, if only for the classic "The Kids Just Wanna Dance."

Plus considering that as of this writing this is the only review and that the ultra-rare original vinyl of the Fast Cars goes for mad cash on E-bay, just knowing about this band is sure to get you more cred than putting on a skinny tie. At least among the Japanese anyway.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZ DIVA TOUR-DE-FORCE!! BRAVO GLORIA!!.......2004-04-12

Talk about an underrated and overlooked singer!! Look no further and grab this incredible masterpiece fast while it is still available as it does not get better than this or rarely as great!! From the opening haunting Lionel Richie "Hello", you know this is singing at it finest!! A brilliant production by Nat Adderley Jr. is inspired and Mr. Adderley more than lives up to his legendary name here!! An exotic trip on "No Detour Ahead" is sublime and an exhuberant latin rhythm makes "Old Devil Moon" fresh and original. Torchy and soulfully sung is a masterful take on Billie Holiday's classic "Don't Explain" and "Everything Must Change" is simply haunting and mesmorizing!! Stunning and glorious piano and tenor saxophone brilliantly frame a stunningly loose and soulful vocal on the extraordinary "Free" which is one of the many in this classic set that you won't want to end!! Haunting and gorgeous is the old standard "My Foolish Heart" and never before has it sounded quite this incredible. Please come to the West Coast Miss Lynne and grace us with your incredible talent!! What a thrill it must be to see this wonder in a club-WOW!!!!! As incredible as this complete collection is the finale is a whooper!!! Never have I heard a Stevie Wonder cover this brilliant and Stevie must be in 7th heaven whenever he hears this masterful version!!! Miss Gloria Lynne takes "Too Shy To Say" all over the place and turns it inside out and into a masterpiece!! I don't know the background of this classic work as far a Grammy goes as this came out over ten years ago now, but it should have had I hope at least a win in the Jazz Catagory!! This is one of the best ever and do not miss this Classic!!! Bravo Gloria Lynne-you a remarkable singer!!!!!

        Album Description

Carl Johns is Charlemagne. But he's been known as Carl Johns before — like when he was born in Southern Indiana in the mid-'70s, and when he started playing the drums (his first instrument). He was also Carl Johns when he left the Hoosier State and relocated to Madison, Wisconsin eight years ago, learned to play guitar and ended up in the group Noahjohn (a sort of a psychedelic Americana project, depending on which album you're listening to), of which released four albums from 1999 to 2004, and toured all over the U.S. and U.K. Detour Allure was co-produced by Charlemagne and The Arty Bastard (real name: Curtis Whaley, keyboard player and graphic designer for the disc), and it was the first time the two paired up as a production team. "Curtis and I worked really well together," says Johns. "I really enjoyed working with Curtis. He's a Southern gentleman with Euro flavor, which I think comes through on the record. He's equally at home at cookouts and art openings! , a subtle iconoclast." Detour Allure launches with a triumvirate of material — specifically "Greyhound," "Pink and Silver" and "Nematode" — that, according to Johns, sets the parameters for the rest of the album and dictates "the palette that we're working with." "Greyhound" is self-tagged as a "lazy pop song," on the slower end of a mid-tempo pace. (The song's chorus is where the album title was lifted.) The upbeat "Pink and Silver" sports an `80s feel, with plenty of hooks and fuzzy tones. Johns' psychedelic influences make an appearance in the middle section of "Nematode," which fires off with rough drum beats, acoustic guitars and a female voice, then breaks into a pop song with male/female vocal interplay. And when it's all said and done, the core of Charlemagne's Detour Allure is Johns' songwriting common denominator: the exploration of mystery and becoming comfortable with the unknown. The juxtaposition of such elements in Detour Allure includes offering pop melodies of intimate scenarios (conception, knitting, travel, gossip, card games, etc.) ? the familiar and "known" ? amidst psychedelia and a wash of sound ? the undefined and "unknown."

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sweet melodies and harmonies.......2006-03-25

Detour Allure sports toe-tapping beats and soft melodies that give it an upbeat but mellow feel, and the quiet, low-key male and female voices lull one into a state of contentment as they sketch vignettes of travel, love, and survival. Each song is like a moment out of every day life; the lyrics speak of the joys, tribulations, and quiet moments that meet us as we travel day to day, hour by hour through our lives. It is easy to feel a connection and understand the songs, because they represent experiences that are in some way common to us all, and recall memories of our own pasts. The songs show the cycles in life; the cycles of the season and the earth and the cycles in relationships - the joy in love, the loss, and the healing and renewal. Both these cycles and nature and relationships are best exemplified by the last song, "Hello September," which speaks of the loss of summer and the loss of love and reminds the listener that all things change.

First of all, the reason i bought this CD is because the people at freshreleases.com were praising them right and left, talking about their catchy rock songs and stuff, well they gave them WAY too much credit then what they actually deserve. Second, they are from New Zealand, and since i'm obsessed with people/things from Australia/New Zealand i had to buy it. Well, they have some good songs ("Overrated", "When you call", "Fall Away".), but the rest of the cd is, dare i say, boring. I think that they could be SO much better. It is their first album so maybe they are just a little rusty around the edges. If they do release a second album, i think they should try and write alot more catchier, punk/rock songs. This cd mainly has slow songs and i don't really think that fits into the genre they are heading for: Rock. Sorry Detour 180, but i have to speak the truth.

The third installment of this classic series that highlights the latest crop of bands from around the world all fighting for recognition! Each band deliver two of their most powerful tracks. First up is 96 Tsu Bu No Namida, which translates to `96 Tears'. This band are from outta Japan and are stuck in a Timewarp. Two amazing garage punkers that could of come straight out of Bedrock! Next up is another amazing band from the land of the rising sun, The Freaque. They have already played in the UK at one of Alan McGee's nights and went down a storm. The first track by them has already been picked up by a film company in Japan. Oh my god, here come the yellow peril of Newcastle's Janorak! Mixing some damned find futuristic lyrics along with some mighty fine Devo-tistic imagery. Leaving the UK for a while, we now delivery one of the two bands featured here from Austria. Out of the ashes of `The Jaybirds', we bring you the Music Department. Two fine Heavy Psych tracks that will leave you worn-out and gasping for air. Next up is a new band called Sawdust Of Caesars. Hailing from the Bromley area, this smartly dressed crew play some neat '60s beat. Now back to Austria for the second lot that has grown from the break-up of the Jaybirds, The Subcandies. Swivel are next up from outta Bognor Regis. Two perfect in yer face tracks with no holds barred! Germany's The Monocaines give us two organ driven danceable gems that any dance floor would welcome. Last up is the new group on the scene, The Q from Gloucestershire are one hell of a band to watch out for. Very catchy and could of given the Paul Weller a run for his money if this band were around back in the heyday of `79!. Detour. 2006.
