There's this insistent throbbing, a constant blistering.......2003-10-09
This is a meaner, harder Season to Risk. The sound gets close to Fudge Tunnel territory at times, which is kinda funny because back in 1993 I didn't think these boys had anything to do with that strain of music. Shows you what I know. There's this insistent throbbing, a constant blistering of the ears that I can't (and don't want to) shake.
Easily the band's most solid and wide-ranging album since its outstanding debut (still one of my favorites). Indeed, while stripping away some of the fat the boys have come back 'round to where they started. A song like "Deserve" is the perfect follow up to "Home" from the first disc. And I hear parallels throughout the album. Once again, Season to Risk is playing brilliant music that just doesn't fit in with the times. Hey, I'll listen. Any time.
Robotic monkeys in a perfect, shattering world.......2003-10-09
I bought all of this band's CDs after this record, The Shattering, took my head off. I say 'took my head off', because it didn't just blow it off with force, or speed, or volume. My head was slowly and methodically emptied and dismantled by the time the CD ended. At the end of the last song, I was truly sorry it had ended, and I sat there, headless, wondering 'what was that?'
Each instrument is played exceptionally well, the songs are deceptively noisy and melodic, and seem to contain secret messages. A guitar part morphs into something else, live drums become mechanized, voices are in your headphones, out in the backyard, inside your head suggesting maybe you should think about things.
The songwriting is across a broad spectrum of rock- Is this suddenly almost a pop song, or hardcore, or experimental? Indie? Metal? Songs take unexpected turns, first sublty beautiful, lulling, hypnotic, erupting into a full-on rock anthem, and back, without the usual predicability. It leaves you really wanting to know Where this band is from, and Who they are, and How they can move from one kind of energy to the next so cleverly, even within the same song. Is this what people mean by emo? But this band is way too 'Rock' to be emo, or way too catchy to be hardcore, or way too technical to be pop.
This is the best-produced CD by Season To Risk, and after hearing the other three records, it seems to be a culmination of their experience as a band. Elements from previous STR songs are captured here, but everything has been boiled down to concise components which are meant to carefully lead you through a full range of sensation, until at the end, did it end? I still hear it.
Gathering Storm.......2002-09-17
There's an old Zen koan... What's the sound of one hand clapping? When someone asked me about Season to Risk... I thought... Ah! Good question... What's the sound of carpet-bombing? What's the sound of fifteen grenades exploding inside your skull? If you were to survive an atomic blast what would the shock wave sound like? I suppose I could compare Season to Risk to a workingman's Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson without the makeup... I thought of System of a Down on acid... But I think System of a Down IS on acid... So that doesn't quite explain it... I saw Season to Risk live at the Hurricane in Kansas City and it all seemed to make sense... Every song is like a giant storm and the short pause between each break is the eye of the storm... You're in a lifeboat and you just made it through the maelstrom and then another terrible roar... Huge locusts are swooping and diving around the raft... There's some kind of machine in the sky that you can't explain... Your hair is standing on end... Your jaw drops and your eyes widen to try and understand it all... More waves are crashing... You check the rigging and pull yourself over to the man selling CDs during the show but they're already sold out... He's yelling, "Please remain calm... I think you can find it on Amazon!" This group has it strapped down tight... Just make sure you bring a life jacket and industrial grade raincoat if you buy this CD...
Happily Shuddering to The Shattering.......2002-05-22
It had been a long time before I had listened to S2R ... found out they had a new cd out and I had to get it. I wasn't disapointed for one moment or song for that matter. The Shattering picks up where Men Are Monkeys .. Robots Win left off by exploring the sounds more and more. There was some snyth work in Men Are Monkeys... and its taken to the next step for The Shattering. The soundscape of these songs is amazing ... almost as if you were to play it at the loudest possible volume where you couldn't take it anymore would be the ultimate feeling for this CD.
The CD starts out with the title track and sets the tone for the rest of the album. A mechanical intro and then into the bass and guitars. I still just love how the bass and drums work so well together in this band. The trademark sound is still there with Steves unique vocals accenting the songs perfectly. At the moment my fav song is song #2 "Ace of Space" its almost "poppy" if you can say such things about s2r. It has a great groove and I can't get it out of my head. The rest of the songs have the standard s2r feel with the distorted bass and sometimes inaudible vocals. If you like any of their previous works you'll love this one as well. Other songs that stand out are "Or Highwater", "Straigh and Narrow" which is a more mellow tune with a good vibe, and "Mono Fuego" old school s2r gotta love it! Just love this CD its just the right music for the sound I have been craving lately. They sound completely fresh and new to me still. So if your tired of all the new bands that are rehashed versions of past one-hit-wonders give s2r a try for something violently different.
Men Are Monkeys But The Shattering Wins!.......2002-03-16
This is a great cd! You have to know the KC sound to really get the full effect. This beats the Monkeys cd because the production is right on! You can hear Steve's voice-scream the way it was meant to be. Must be played several times to get used to it. You got to see these guys live!

Awesome Aussie Punk Rock.......2004-10-13
If you are looking for a new cd to add to your cd collection, please dont hesitate to purchase this CD. Sound Shattering Sound is Gyroscopes first full length album, and believe me, it doesnt disapoint. Instead of dribbling a whole lot of crap about how good these guys are, i'll just give a song by song rating.
1. Confidence in confidenciality - 5/5 great song to open the album that you can jump around to.
2. Safe forever - 5/5 this song will only take you one listen to love and will have you singing the lyrics all day.
3. Take this for granted - 5/5 this was the first song that i heard of gyroscope off punkrockvids.com and i loved it so much that it encouraged me to by the cd. awesome song.
4. Hollow like cheyenne - 5/5 This song starts off slow, but then picks up in intensity very quickly. One of the best songs on the cd.
5. Doctor doctor - 5/5 This song rocks really hard. Another song that you can cut sick and jump around to.
6. Misery - 4/5 This song is very good. the only reason why its not 5/5 is because i dont think it quite matches up to the rest of the songs. a slower song than the rest.
7. Get down - 5/5 Awesome song
8. Midnight Express - 5/5 This song is very catchy and will have you singing the chorus all day.
9. Are you getting any better? - 4/5 great song, just isnt quite as catchy as the others, but is still a great song.
10. My hands are tied - 5/5 Good song, don't know how to describe it, its just a wicked song.
11. Driving for the storm - 6/5 My favorite song on the cd. Extremely catchy and there is not one flaw on this song. I love the drumming on this song.
12. You try waiting this long - 4/5 Decent song to end the album. starts slowly and then picks up.
Overall, this is an awesome cd and should picked up from anyone who likes punk rock, pop punk, emo, sceamo or just rock. If you get a chance to see these guys live, definately do it. These guys rock live and have plenty of energy on stage.
Gyroscope Rock!!!!!
Aussie Rock is back.......2004-06-22
Real Aussie rock has been a dying thing, with the punk rock aussie phase being the best performing act in the country, but since the first time i saw these guys live, i knew they were going to make it. now with their first full length cd 'Sound Shattering Sound' they are about to set and break new records, with songs that after one listen have you siging choruses over and over. also for those die hard gyro fans they have thrown in 3 favourites from the old eps for you to re-live the experience. with their new single 'Take This For Granted' and their smash single 'Safe Forever' on the cd as well they are already going to hook you in to getting it, and if the rest of the tracks like 'Get Down' 'Misery' and 'Confidence in Confidentiality' are anything to go by, there is not one cd out there that musically is better than this, go gyro you guys rock.

Album Description
Pianist/composer Seth Osburn defies easy categorization. His intricate compositions fuse classical structures, minimalist motifs, jagged, jazz-style rhythmic textures, and the epic, image-filled literate leanings of nineteenth century Romantic composers such as Franz Liszt. The musical outcome is simultaneously thought-provoking and emotionally resonantan appeal both to mind and heart. This is not new age feel-good music, but the innovative sound of an artist seeking to forge new musical landscapes. "Seth has a deep connection with the piano and expresses all that anyone could possibly wantanger, joy, sorrow, sadness, tranquility, and peace
He stretches the boundaries of the piano as an instrument. SEVEN is one of the best instrumental (solo or otherwise) albums I've ever heard."
-Meishel Menachekanian, KCSN-FM, Los Angeles "SEVEN is an incredible piece for solo piano
This music takes you on a journey through the depths of material and spiritual existence. A classically trained pianist, Seth is both a true virtuoso and a very sensitive player."
-Rocco Somazzi, Rocco's, Hollywood "Seth is a complete master of the piano. He plays with such physical and emotional intensity that the piano produces deep resonating sounds that most people would have never expected. These powerful chords carry the vibrational energy of alchemical transformation
This young composer has obviously lived these processes and has successfully translated them into the popular vernacular of music. Just listening to this remarkable recording is a soul-shattering and spirit-raising experience." -Dennis William Hauck, author, The Emerald Tablet: Alchemy for Personal Transformation
Customer Reviews:
Stunning originality and virtuosity .......2007-03-08
I admit to bias, as I am a piano student of the composer and performer. Probably not for everyone, as the prior review indicates, this music is stunningly original. It has the power to suggest or depict transformations on a spiritual level, through analogy with physical transformation. Hence, the alchemical "program." If you value really original musical imagniation and exuberant, muscular piano virtuosity, this disk is a must.
this cd causes anxiety.......2006-07-19
This cd had the potential to be awesome.
Instead, it's filled with anxious and obnoxious rythms.
All the songs sound too similar.
Don't get me wrong, Osburn has great talent, but he didn't use any of it writing this album.
Seriously, this cd causes anxiety.
