          I bought these two CD's a couple of years ago, and they still remain among my favorites. It contains songs that are well-known and are played often on the radio. It also introduces you to less well-known artists such as Lou Reed and Argent. I highly reccomend them!

            I agree with the first reviewer, with some elaboration: These songs are by the original artists. If nothing else, you can hear it in the familiar voices of the singers. BUT, the vocals have all been overlaid somehow with a kind of echo that changes them. The instrumentation also is subject to this echo, I think. My guess is the songs were all re-mixed as well as remastered, and this effect was done on purpose, for some reason.

            The weird thing is, for those who are young now and want an "oldies" compilation, this type of remixing actually UNIFIES these songs so they all sound much more like they belong together on the same CD. (Instead of the bane of most compilations, where people think "Ugh! why did they put this song in here with that song?") In THIS sence, what they did could be seen as an advantage.

            But for those of us who were teens in the 70's and KNOW these songs, --Come on, K-tel !! (and every other compilation company that has done similar stuff) Don't you know that the real fans of classic tunes DON'T want you to mess with them?!

            Just know what you're getting.

            I bought this CD because I wanted Blue Magic's SIDESHOW but was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the other tracks, which were remastered. Highlights include The Trammps' DISCO INFERNO, AWB's PICK UP THE PIECES and Wilson Pickett's forceful rendition of DON'T KNOCK MY LOVE, PT. 1. These three alone make the disc well worth the purchase price. This fine distillation of tracks from other Rhino compilations should be considered a "must-have" for fans of 1970s R&B/Funk, and is a worthwhile companion for the PURE FUNK series.
