So pleasant to listen to.......2007-06-13

John Denver was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. He is remembered as one of the great American musicians and song-writers, and a leading humanitarian and environmentalist. This two-CD album is recorded from a live concert, and shows off John's musical talents to their absolute best. All of his greats are here - Annie's Song, Matthew, and Calypso. (But, not Thank God I'm A Country Boy.)

Overall, I found this to be a great album, so pleasant to listen to on long car trips. During my recent trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this album became the soundtrack of my pilgrimage. I love this album, and highly recommend it to everyone.

Uplifting Songs for Every Occation .......2007-05-08

John Denver's music always gives me a boost during the day. It's easy to remember and sing along with all of his songs to give you a bright, shiney feeling.

LOVE THIS! I was so enamored that I even got the video of his concert which starts with "Eagles and Horses" that begins with running horses. WO! What I was really impressed with is his song "For You". For those who have the video, I bet you were as surprised as I was when you saw him play the piano on that song. I didn't know he could play the piano and what a soft touch he had on it. On PBS they showed a concert of his in '83 and on "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" he played fiddle. Double "WO!" On this CD John spoke about a friend of his who loved to dance with her "beloved" who passed away years before, and he then played "A Song For All Lovers" which was new for me. I was touched both by the song and John's telling of his friend Marti who was 93 at the time and inspiration for the song. Nor did I know the background for "Matthew" that he wrote about his father's brother who passed in a car accident. I didn't know a thing about his father and to hear John mention how many were in his father's family I felt closer to John. For him to share these snippets of his personal life of his father and Marti is something I've never heard other singers do. My favorite is "You Say That The Battle Is Over". He didn't write it, but he was so good at making others' songs 'his'. "Is It Love" was a great 'everybody" song as he told us our part to sing and the funny part is that when he flubbed the same line he laughed out loud.What a breath of fresh air to know that he can flub up with the best of them and make it fun. I saw John twice in concert in '76 and '78. He was way too serious and the only thing he said was that we could sing along which probably bugged everyone around me because I can't listen to John without singing with him.I also loved "Whispering Jesse" a new song for me and it was quite visual. My ultimate favorite? "Wild Montana Skies". A couple years ago I got a "Greatist Hits" compilation which had that with Emmylou Harris and I loved it so much I named my Chihuahua Montana Sky. "John Denver The Wildlife Concert" is also the first time I've seen him without his 'old' hair and round glasses. Made him look older. I hated and refuse to play "Amazon" "The Harder They Fall" and "Dreamland Express". "Amazon" sounds forced. "The Harder They Fall" took John out of his coffe house singer image. He was no rocker despite his daring try. "Dreamland Express" sounds too "trainy" for my taste by its title alone. Everything else is exquisit. Knowing that he passed away two years later makes his loss all the more sad, but what a great last concert.

John Is Back !.......2006-06-02

I purchased my first copy of this album and the video when it was released in 1995. I have since then worn that copy out, so I recently purchased a new CD.
This is a fantastic live album with John re-visiting much of his earlier work. He was able to successfully integrate those songs with newer compositions. The manner in which he re-worked Rocky Mountain High gives the song new life, you can't help but sing along with John. There are too many tracks to discuss each one effectively, so I will emphasize just a few of them. I was disappointed that Different Directions was not on the CD, although it is on the video. A Song for All Lovers is a beautiful tribute to his friend Marti.
My absolute favorite song on this album is For You. This beautiful love song is embraced by John's silky smooth voice, a small string orchestra, and John on the piano. For You stands very strong alongside Annie's Song as one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
This is an album that I never have grown tired of listening to. It will remain one of John's best albums ever released.

GOT TO GET THIS ONE.......2006-01-09

I just started listening to this glorious voice and simply beautiful verses coming from my stereo and sat and listened to it all. My favorites, "I Wish I Could Be In Colorado" and the sadly touching love story, "Whispering Jesse,"also "Eagles and Horses". Most all of his old "stories" are included. John Denver's voice is loud strong and gentle when appropriate.
Just sit, listen, and you will cry, this recording is so wonderfully beautiful.....GET THIS ONE, YOU WON'T REGRET IT

An excellent tribute to an excellent man.......2007-02-17

This CD includes 15 beautiful country-style songs with a wonderful message to preserve the wildlife around us. The first track Wildlife Warriors was written by John Williamson as a tribute to Steve Irwin and his conservation work only a few hours after he performed at the Steve Irwin Memorial Service. There are also two live tracks included in this CD from the memorial service: Home Among the Gum Trees and True Blue. I absolutely love these live versions--they are so full of emotion--much more than his other recordings of the same songs. It feels like there are fewer and fewer good songs/CD's out there these days that convey important messages. This CD stands out as a real treasure. It's an excellent tribute to a wonderful man who cared so much about wildlife, plus $1 from purchasing this CD will go to the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide fund.

The uncharitable will say that the only thing missing from this 2 CD '96 live set of Doobie standards is the toe tag. We merely report that several thousand boomers and bikers will enjoy it, and the cause (wildlife preservation) is a good one. --Jeff Bateman

The Gentlemen of Southern Rock in Concert.......2001-02-10

I consider three 1970's groups (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Doobie Brothers) the originators of Southern rock. The Doobie Brothers were the gentlemen of Southern rock. These gentlemen's personalities shine in "Rockin' Down The Highway: The Wildlife Concert", a recording of an extremely fun, happy, and energetic 1996 concert for the Wildlife Conservation Society. The Doobie Brothers' support for the Wildlife Conservation Society is appropriate. Nearly twenty-five years after their first recording, The Doobie Brothers still are rockin' down the highway and their wild life continues. That's an extremely long playing record!

This excellent recording presents The Doobie Brothers' lyrics more clearly than some of their studio recordings. Two selections: 'China Grove' (with its outstanding guitar solos) and 'Listen To The Music' (a great concert arrangement) are examples of Southern rock's best. Another 8 selections are particularly outstanding. 'Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)', 'Minute By Minute', and 'What A Fool Believes' feature Michael McDonald's outstanding vocals. 'Takin' It To The Streets' features saxophone solos and Michael McDonald vocals. 'Slow Burn', 'The Doctor', & 'Without You' feature outstanding guitar solos. 'Excited' features vocal and guitar solos plus a rolling arrangement reminiscent of "The Lizzies" scene in the 1979 Michael Beck cult movie "The Warriors".

The Doobie Brothers have polished their artistry and style for over twenty-five years. That artistry and style shines in "Rockin' Down The Highway: The Wildlife Concert". I recommend this fun live recording both for Doobie Brothers fans and also for those unfamiliar with The Doobie Brothers' music.

Only for the Doobie lovers.......2000-06-30

This is a great album for anyone who has not heard the Doobie Brothers before and wants to get to know the band. For anyone who has a lot of Doobie albums, this cd probably is not a good buy. The songs are simply recycled and there is no creative spin to make the cd unique. This cd is best for new fans or the Doobie obsessed.

Saw the Doobies Labor Day 1999 at a festival. Found this CD to be on par with that concert. This CD captures all the musical excitement that a festival setting can give. I recommend this CD to any Doobies fan or fan of music from the 70's.

I have this CD and the video and I highly, highly recommend both for a look and a listen to one of America's greatest, cleanest sounding and most talented rock and roll bands, who provide grand doses of not only rock but also country, jazz and blues. Buy the CD for your stereo, and the video for your television. And share both with your children so they can learn and understand what great seventies rock and roll really is. A stunning collection of great tunes.......1999-02-10

Having been a Doobie Brothers fan for 20 plus years, it wasn't until 1990 that I saw them perform live. I have seen them 3 times since. I was convinced their onstage live energy couldn't be captured on "vinal" or CD. I was wrong. This is a terrific double album. Crystal clear sound, great selection of classic hits spanning the last 25 years.Even non touring ex-Doobie-Michael McDonald appears in several tunes (I guess there are no ex Doobies). Highly recommended!!!added for a few tunes.

Good tunes, mediocre DVD.......2006-04-19

Started in 1981 by Canadian nature cinematographer/sound recordist Dan Gibson, Solitudes has long been the standard by which all nature sound and/or nature/music CDs have been judged. And no wonder. Through an unbelievable 180 recordings (what's that, 7 discs annually?) the label has touched on just about every nature and music combination, all with impeccable recording standards.

This package marks Solitudes silver anniversary, and generally it does a decent job. Disc one is all music. Smartly, the powers that be (Dan's sons Gordon and Dan Jr., it appears) picked a track from each of the label's main composers, including Hennie Bekker (who's done 14 albums), Michael Maxwell (12 albums), John Herberman (topping the list at 16) and more. That let the Gibsons write a short essay about the work of each composer and how well it fit into the Solitudes canon. it also means a mix of everything from the crooner standard Moon River to what the Gibsons call the "ingenous instruments and trippy rhythms" of India, by Steve Wingfield.

So where's the weakness? It's the second disc, a DVD allowing viewers to watch (mostly) gentle, reflective nature scenes teamed up with music and/or nature sounds. You can pick whether you want both or just nature sounds. Trouble is, it appears the Gibsons went cheap on this. Most of the DVD appears to have been shot at Ontario's legendary Algonquin Park (though we're never told that in the very limited DVD notes). It's a nice choice -- I've camped there and it's a glorious park -- but too often the filming was done in the harsh light of mid-day. Anyone with any cinema or photographic experience knows much better light is to be had in the early morning or late day.

Some of the DVD titles are simply silly, too. Check out "Dreaming" which is nature sounds and music slapped on top of an unchanging view of sparkles in water. It's really nice for, oh, one minute. Then you keep waiting for something more and it never arrives. "Algonquin Sunset" is another embarrassment, views of a crackling fire in front of a nameless, generic lake. It looks incredibly hokey. "Winter Wonder" isn't bad...the Gibsons go to Niagara Falls to film and it's a rich experience. But in the end, I wanted more. How about a trip to the Rocky Mountains? The glorious Pacific Ocean in B.C.'s Pacific Rim National Park? The lack of geographic breadth is a serious shortcoming.

In the end, this is still a good buy. But so is The Best of Solitudes: 20th Anniversary Collection. It's all music and you won't find yourself disappointed.

Excellent Remaster of the Band's 3rd Album.......2005-09-30

Somebody has to be a Gemini, here. Listen to "Home Is Where I Want To Be", an interesting Ralphs composition with intricate interlacing organ and piano plus folk guitar, mellow, laid back and friendly. The next piece is the live remake of Little Richards', "Keep 'A Knockin". Here for the first time on the first three MTH albums you get an inkling of the full firepower of MTH live on stage. A real rush turned up loud as they were in concert, full chaos controlled beautifully (and the crowd loves it); very striking contrast! This displays perfectly the two sides MTH was capable of. Ralphs' guitar work as always impeccable, ranging from traditional riffs to harmonious patterns to nice flashing and crashing lead lines. Then he turns it up another notch and goes into tree sawing mode; quite a work ethic. Also, excellent rendition of Melanie's hit, "Lay Down" and the solemn orchestral "Waterlow", by Hunter. This album the band produced themselves, with inconsistent help from engineers, due to falling out with Guy Stevens after he pushed them over the edge on Mad Shadows and wanted to fire organist Verden Allen. Instead, the band stuck with Verdie and told Guy to take a walk. They missed him, although eccentric he was at least consitent, and teamed again on the next album, Brain Capers.

Other nice songs on this album; Hunter's "Angel of Eighth Avenue", and the bonus track of Mountain's, "Long Red". This was a tribute to the bands' friend, Leslie West, and a fine rendition indeed. The live version on Tale of Two Cities is also breathtaking. Great booklet here and composition by drummer Dale (Buffin) Griffin, as with all four of MTH's remastered first albums. You won't be dissappointed with the sound quality of this import CD, a must have and well worth the investment. Kudos to the Angel Air lable for getting these remastered historic discs into the market. They sound as good today as they did live, 30 years ago.

Good music........2004-04-04

Shuttle358 follows the tradition of click techno such as Phonem, Arovane, which seems to made out of 2 components: beat and flotation. Whereas Arovane's percussive screen often sounds like an insect eating its lunch amplified 80 billion times, Shuttle358 is content to use an understated pitter-patter rhythmic pulse juxtaposed against forlorn, whispy smokescapes of sound. Definitely an ambient release - perfect post-pillow listening before your first cup of coffee. Unlike the more cacophonous German counterparts, Shuttle358 opts for track titles with real words. Which makes you wonder sometimes how these titles fit in with the music - I mean the track called Models of My Life is a beautiful haunting little piece but sounds like it might just well have been called Non-Descript Sandwich or Polish Steel Industry. But I suppose it must means something to Dan Abrams (who is Shuttle358). To sum up, Understanding Wildlife is stylish, well-made music that is, yes darnit I'm not ashamed to say it, very pretty. Music this good should not remain unknown.

Eclectic, mellow garage rock.......2006-01-23

We're all getting tired of carbon copy garage rock and dance punk. Fortunately, The Wildlife add a new twist: lofi techno, 70s r&b and light funk. The result is a mellower, but thankfully different, garage rock. I give it 3 stars in regards to my enjoyment of the album, of which I'm just lukewarm, but they get an extra star for bringing something new to the mix.

Donna the Buffalo--hard to categorize, but easy to love--are meant to be heard live. The six-member group thrives on jams and grooves, blending, bending, and veering from Appalachian country to Cajun, reggae, zydeco, folk, and roots rock often in the same song (check out the nearly 13-minute "Conscious Evolution"). Frequently compared to the Grateful Dead, DTB evoke Jerry Garcia and pals, both musically and with their rabid, nomadic fan base (the Herd). But in mixing tribal celebration with spiritual, social, and political issues, the band, which travels the country in a 1960 tour bus, recalls so many other hippie-era ensembles that this two-CD 2001 concert recording might as well have been cut at the Fillmore in '68. Jeb Puryear's electric guitar hearkens, at times, to the plaintive scorching of Big Brother & the Holding Company, and yet the group also knows the importance of melody, as on "Family Picture," where Tara Nevins anchors the lyrics and rides them over a driving beat and a riff so infectious you'll be reaching for the repeat button. Two discs might be stretching things a bit, but put on a tie-dyed T-shirt and light up a smoke, and you'll be clamoring for space on that bus. --Alanna Nash

Good times, only fair musicianship.......2006-05-24

Donna The Buffalo is good times music. No matter what your mood, put on some DTB and you're gonna smile and feel like shufflin' around the floor. In particular, Tara Nevins is a fine fiddler and a singer in a vein similar to a young Emmylou Harris.

DTB are some of the best songwriters in the jamband scene, they write songs with great hooks and they can sure mine a beat. Unfortunately, what doesn't come across as their strong suit on this release is their relatively limited ability to stretch out and jam. If you're looking for great instruemental solos, this one is likely to leave you lacking.

Normally, I prefer live releases over studio discs by any given artist on any given day, but this one just didn't do it for me. DTB has three excellent(!) studio releases in "Rockin' In the Weary Land", "Positive Friction", and "Life's a Ride", all of which get more listens (and smiles!) from me than this one.

Sure, listening to this you can tell the audience was having a party - but their studio albums will have you dancin' and grinnin' even more than this one.

The music of DTB absolutely WILL make you happy, but I'd start with their other releases first. 2 1/2 stars.

I really, really like Donna the B. This is the band that brought me out of my post Garcia blues, the first band that wrote songs that were so engaging I played the discs over and over again. I wore out, literally, Positive Friction and bought a second copy. This double live LP is less good, but still definitely worth owning. The recording is a little lifeless from a technical standpoint, but then it's live, and maybe they didn't have the best sound that day. Or those days. But be that as it may, this is wonderful, happy jam music, highly recommended. I know they aren't the Dead, not by a mile, nor do they wish to be, but this music made me perk up my ears when nothing else did.

Donna The Buffalo provides a young-blooded backcountry twist to the American South. Their new double-album "Live From The American Ballroom" illustrates their ability to capture an audience, and shows how an accordion and washboard can truly make a band unique. "Live" was recorded during Donna The Buffalo's spring tour of 2001, incorporating country melodies and rhythms against rock and a touch of Zydeco. "Ancient Arms" and "Come To Life" stand alone against the rest of the album. The lineup features Jim Miller on guitar/banjo, Richie Stearns on organ, Jed Greenberg on bass, and Tom Gilbert on drums. Tara Nevins and Jeb Puryear take care of writing the material, adding their expertise on guitar and fiddle/washboards respectively. "Live Form The American Ballroom" will satisfy the hayseed hippie in anyone regardless of age. Not as great as i would expect.......2002-07-31

I was at Bonnaroo when I first heard the sounds of the acordian as I was passing by one of the many stages, I asked who it was and becuase of the busy schedule of the festival could not stick around so I later came to buy the CD here on Amazon and was not as impressed I was was hoping.I will give them some credit on thier instrumentation, the acordian, wash board and fiddle, all played by Nevans,acompanied by keys drums bass and two guitars, give the group some flavor, but they don't do much with it. The melody lines are bouncy and cheerful for the most part but they never go anywhere with the jams, and you end up getting only the repetitive arodian melodies stuck in your head wich might also be due to poor mastering.Nevans vocals are sweet sounding but almost too sweet, a mix between Sarah Mclachan and Edie Brickell, which is good i just have a hard time rocking out to such a sweet female voice. As far as the other lead vocalist which I think is one of the guitar players, he has kind of a Bob Dylan sounding voice but again isn't mixed well and is just plain hard to understand. Don't get me wrong, seeing them live could very well be a good time and as far as the CD goes will be good backround music to beer and cards on a Saturday night, but unless I hear something different coming from the buffalo this will be the last CD of donna's I buy.

Jamming in the USA.......2002-03-03

Combine musicians extremely skilled in all forms of American roots music, plug them in to make a mostly electric band, add psychedelic garage band Lowery organ sounds, stir with lyrics that touch on various eternal truths, and you get a conscious dance party from this upstate NY that has been playing together for more than 12 years called Donna the Buffalo. Multi-instrumentalist Tara Nevins adds much to the ever-changing sound of the group as she switches between fiddle, accordion, rubboard and acoustic guitar, as well as vocals, which she alternates especially with guitarists Jeb Puryear and Jim Miller. Fans have been waiting a long time for Donna to put out a live recording, and this double album captures the intoxicating rhythmic vibrations of their live shows. Live from the American Ballroom was recorded on the band's spring tour, and shows their affection for driving, zydeco-fueled grooves. The musicians rip through rollicking renditions of "Riddle of the Universe" and "America," and they splash some spicy Southwest Louisiana riffs into "Tides of Time." They soar into rocketing Bo Diddley beats during a lengthy work out of "Conscious Evolution, and then downshift into their old-timey roots on the song's bouncy ending. Two tracks really stand out on the album, and they come from totally different musical planets. The band cooks up a mesmerizing groove at the beginning of "Ancient Arms," and rides the sweeping melodies all the way to the song's closing notes. While this tune showcases the majestic beauty of their music, the group reveals a more adventurous side during "Push Comes To Shove." The exploratory edginess of this improvisational number is radically different from their usual stuff, and it transported me back to the psychedelic jams of the late 1960's (they are in fact one of the favorite band of deadheads, in fact they also have an avid following called "The Herd). You can't miss with this CD.
