Still probably the most magical recording ever of The Magic Flute, this starrily cast production featured the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich as Tamino, Evelyn Lear as a wonderfully sympathetic Pamina, Roberta Peters as a regal Queen of the Night (surprisingly good coloratura, if a little light at the top), Wagnerians James King and Martti Talvela as the two armed men (imagine that!), and of course, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, in one of his finest operatic outings, as an engagingly earnest Papageno. Behind it all, the marvelously astute Karl Böhm and the Berlin Philharmonic are in top form. The 1964 stereo is first rate. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Male voices top, female voices flop.......2007-05-25

To get the real feeling for the charme of "Die Zauberflöte", you need at least two recordings: This one under Böhm is magnificent for its male voices. Nobody can beat Wunderlich as Tamino, Fischer-Dieskau as Papageno, and Crass as Sarastro. The female voices, with the exception of Lisa Otto as Papagena, are not up to the mark, though. Evelyn Lear as Pamina is lacking in brilliance, especially in the duets when she has to stand comparison with her male counterparts. Roberta Peter's singing as Queen of the Night is somewhat extreme. You get used to it after some time, but her timbre is void of beauty and her coloratura shaky at times.

What can be made of the female roles becomes clear when you listen to Klemperer's recording on EMI (also from the early 1960s, like Böhm's). Gundula Janowitz is probably the most beautiful Pamina on disc and Lucia Popp is supreme as Queen of the Night. The three ladies with Schwarzkopf, Ludwig and Höffgen are lovely and sheer luxury. But then Klemperer was less lucky with his male voices: Nicolai Gedda as Tamino and Walter Berry as Papageno sing well but remain pale when compared with Wunderlich and Fischer-Dieskau. Gottlob Frick performs with a lot of warmth, but is clearly beyond his prime when it comes to technique.

So, to experience the full potential of this marvellous opera, there is no way out: You need both the Böhm and the Klemperer version! On its own, neither one is fully satisfactory - but still better than most recent productions!

2 out of 5 stars Poor version.......2005-07-08

This Magic Flute is not quite a good version. Starts good, but some arias are just poor sung... choose another one.

3 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE MAGIC TO ME.......2004-11-23

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS MS PETERS IS SLIGHTLY OFF KEY ON HER HIGH F PLACEMENT? THE REST OF THE CAST WAS GREAT....BUT CAN'T STAND PETERS EMOTIONLESS QUEEN OF NIGHT AND I DISLIKE HER TONE PERIOD. STICK WITH SUMI JO, LILY PONS, AND ADELINA PATTI

5 out of 5 stars Excelente version!.......2002-01-26

5 out of 5 stars The Best Magic Flute Recording.......2000-03-07

I think this is the best recording of The Magic Flute. So many of the singers are absolutely magnificent. Fritz Wunderlich has a beautiful full lyric tenor voice that is perfect for the magical Tamino he creates. Franz Crass is a profoundly noble Sarastro. Roberta Peters is unbelievable as the Queen of the Night. I have heard many coloratura sopranos sing that role and I think she is the best. Her Fs above high C are spectacular and she is very dramatic, especially when she sings her second aria demanding that her daughter Pamina murder Sarastro and goes into fiery coloratura. I think Roberta Peters is the best singer in the world. I would love to find out what her highest note is. Lisa Otto is delightful as Papagena, and Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau brings a lot of earthly humor to the role of Papageno. Mozart's music is pure genuis, and I think this opera is his greatest work.

5 out of 5 stars Geno Delafose - Louisiana Phenomenon.......2007-02-11

All Geno Delafose's recordings are excellent, but this is his best effort. The musicians are tight yet exuberant, and the added treat of Michael Doucet's fiddle to several tracks makes for an exceptional musical experience. This is the most high-energy, incredibly danceable Zydeco album around. If this music doesn't get you off your duff and on your feet, nothing will!!!

5 out of 5 stars Typically wonderful!.......2005-12-06

Geno Delafose can do no wrong, well... maybe he can, but if so, I've never heard it! This album is yet another testament to his high-quality playing, singing and raw energy.

Geno is the son of zydeco legend John Delafose, but nepotism was not a factor in making Geno famous: he is a living legend in his own right.

Unlike many of the popular stars in the zydeco movement today, who play essentially hip-hop with an accordion, Geno keeps one foot planted firmly in the past, singing many of his songs in French and playing with more traditional Zydeco rhythms. It's still fresh, though, and consistently so.

Pick up this album, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody's Dancin'.......2005-07-21

I saw Geno at a Cajun festival and just absolutely fell in love. The Stetson and the smile and his mix of music was amazing and oh so entertaining. I could have easily sat there for hours listening to him. So without the real thing... this is as close as I can get for now. The tempo is upbeat and the music is so fresh. The waltzes are a wonderful change of pace from contemporary music (top 40/adult rock. This CD is the first I have bought of his but I will have them ALL very soon!!! Great investment!!!

5 out of 5 stars New and Old.......2005-01-27

I love the traditional roots of this album. It is unusual to see a young performer still honoring his Creole roots and singing in French. The Sam Cooke cover is as sweet as the original.

5 out of 5 stars Zydeco is great.......2003-06-26

Why had I never heard of Zydeco? American all the way with a southern French flavor. I heard it for the first time on WNYC New York Public Radio. Really great, great stuff!

I'm not sure why nobody reviewed this one before. If you love great dance music this one's a "can't miss". Great energy and Geno's wonderfully traditional Creole/Zydeco style. Geno stays true to the old style while many other Zydeco bands get farther away from it. It reflects a wonderful unique music and culture and none better than this album in my mind. This album is one of my best driving companions. Thanks Geno!!! Seeing and dancing to your music is always a highlight of my many trips to Lafayette.

We've all got a story to tell, and this soul brother is waiting to tell his side.
Our story starts in Dallas, Texas where Geno was born and raised. Born to a musical family, Geno began playing violin and piano at an early age. He cultivated his talent at the Arts Magnet High School where he walked the same harmonious hallways as Roy Hargrove, Erykah Badu, and Norah Jones.

To further his love of music, Geno studied music at Howard University in Washington, D.C. "My time in college was when I really started to hear music in my head that I wanted to express", he states. It was during these years that he began to explore his passion for soul music and developed his production and songwriting skills.
The next chapter of our story finds our soul Brother touring the world as musical director, arranger, and producer for multiple Grammy award winner, Erykah Badu.
"I learned so much form that experience", he says. "Badu taught me how to enjoy the freedom in my art, I mean how to write and sing what you feel and to never shortchange your audience". Geno wrote and produced the hit songs "Times a Wastin" and "Orange Moon" on the 2001 release "Mama's Gun". He also served as associate executive producer for N'Dambi's "Tunin'up and co signin' and. Most recently Geno served as a producer and A & R director for label mate and soul star Carmen Rodgers' "Free" album.

After contributing his genius to several hits, Geno had plenty to offer his first solo project. "The Ghetto Symphony" has already received extraordinary reviews from acclaimed music sources and is available worldwide. One of the most versatile artists in soul music today, Geno is bound to write new chapters in the history of soul artistry. He is a singer in the mold of the classic soul singers of our time, fusing passion with precision and old soul with new style. Prepare to be a part of this soul brother's finest chapter yet, the one that will be written by the soul that he shares with you.

5 out of 5 stars THIS MIGHT BE 1 OF THE TOP 10 NEO SOUL DEBUTS EVER.......2005-12-02

It's just that NO ONE KNOWS THIS CAT! Damn shame, too. Geno knows his music, trust me. It terrifically shows. This brotha has worked with Badu, N'Dambi, and Carmen Rodgers. Now, that's enough to get the damn CD. But jsut in case you're like "Well, I don't know...I've never heard of this guy" let me list some of the gems on the CD: "Honeydew", the very tight remake of GB's "Broadway", the bombastic "I Really Do" and "Let's Lay Down", "So Wrapped Up in You" and "Love Beyond Compare." There's no excuse for you NOT to have this man's CD in your rotation, let alone your collection. Buy this!

With a significant caveat, you could easily say Geno Delafose is a young, almost brashly traditional musician pushing the envelope on zydeco. The caveat is this: Where zydeco has become far more R&B-inflected, Delafose takes the music back to its traditional roots, the common ground shared between zydeco and Cajun styles. "La Chanson Perdue" is Delafose's third Rounder CD and again shines with his smooth, high-mid range vocals and impeccable sense of how to make his creole French bend to fit the rhythms. His accordion playing is spirited but still in clear cahoots with Steve Nash's rubboard, and especially when the band slips into more Cajun vibes, as on "Tite Monde," you can hear for certain how much rural Louisiana Cajun French has informed Delafose. The guest appearances from fiddler Steve Riley and guitarist Christine Balfa are not to be taken as mere cameos, either, for they help churn the dance energies to a perfect pitch. --Andrew Bartlett

Geno Delafose can do no wrong, well... maybe he can, but if so, I've never heard it! This album (like all of his consistently phenomenal albums) is yet another testament to his high-quality playing, singing and raw energy.

5 out of 5 stars Geno's La Chanson Perdue, an excellent Zydeco CD.......2003-08-05

If you're looking for a good Zydeco CD, then do yourself a favor and pick up this release by Geno Delafose. Geno is a very adept accordion player and singer and he leads his band - French Rockin' Booogie - through the paces on this CD. Geno plays Zydeco with a definite nod to traditional arrangements. For example, Geno plays waltzes - something that is rare for a Zydeco band. Bonsoir Moreau is included, a beautiful end-of-the-evening waltz. Opelousas Waltz is also on this release. Geno plays graceful passages on accordion and also some heart-pumping Zydeco phrases as well. Listen to My True Love, Bernadette and Double D Two Step and you will want to dance. If you ever get the chance to see Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie live, then by all means go to the show and be prepared to dance. Geno and the band are at the top of their game and IMHO, there is no better Zydeco act touring the country. Two enthusiastic accordion player's thumbs up for this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Geno at the height of his Zydeco Music career!.......2002-04-07

Even though Geno Delafose is the sexiest accordion player alive, this reason alone is not enough to buy this CD. However, Geno has pulled together some of the greatest musicians in the primes of their careers: John "Popps" Esprite boasts a mean bass, while "Cookie" Chavis (sound familiar?) jams a rockin' guitar, while enthusiastic metallic rhythm is kept by Steve Nash (who also dances a mean Zydeco step), and Geno's cousin, double clutchin' Germaine Jack on drums. This CD is a prime example of just how Zydeco music only gets better as the originators of Zydeco's offspring only make better what their fathers started. Lyrics of each song are sung in Creole French, and included in the CD in both Creole French and English. Catch Geno and his band at their best! I highly recommend this CD to any newly budding Zydeco enthusiasts!

5 out of 5 stars Cajun Zydeco with a lotta soul!.......2001-07-31

Saw Geno at The Ritzville Blues Festival and was blown away by his talent playing and very soulful singing! Nicer person you will not meet! Took photos with him too! Play him often on The Crazy Coyote Blues and Jazz Show 1490 KOTY southcentral Wa. State.

    Album Description

2 CD Best Of compilation album. Initially stationed in England for the Air Force during the early '60s, American soul shouter Geno Washington fronted a British group known as the Ram Jam Band for a series of moderate U.K. chart hits during 1966-1967. Though he was born in Indiana, Washington had the grit of a deep soul testifier like Wilson Pickett or Don Covay. While stationed in East Anglia, Washington became known as a frequent stand-in at gigs around London. When guitarist Pete Gage saw him at a club in 1965, he asked Washington to join his new group with bassist John Roberts, drummer Herb Prestige, organist Jeff Wright, Lionel Kingham on tenor sax, and Buddy Beadle on baritone. Amazon.com essential recording

Thomas Beecham's Magic Flute is among the most famous opera recordings ever made. It has been available for more than 60 years, most recently on CD transfers from EMI, Pearl, and Nimbus. The last of these, first issued in 1991, appeared in a luxurious box set with complete libretto (including the spoken dialogue, omitted on the recording itself); the current release is identical except that it is in a slim package with a plot summary but no libretto. The reasons for the longevity of this recording are not hard to find. Producer Walter Legge assembled about as good a cast as could be persuaded to come to Berlin for the 1937-39 recording sessions, and they are all fine singers who understand and are totally committed to the music. But what stands out most are the inspired playing of the Berlin Philharmonic, always crisp and expressive (once you get used to the desiccated quality of the 1930s monaural sound), and the conducting of Beecham, who brought to the work a combination of wit and nobility that has not been surpassed. There are modern recordings in much better sound (for example, the version by Georg Solti), but none offer more musical insight than this one. --Alex Morin

5 out of 5 stars One of the great recordings of all time!.......2000-08-02

With good reason, this recording of Mozart's sublimely silly masterpiece has never been out of the catalog since it was released in the late 1930's. The singers are mostly an outstanding group--Tiana Lemnitz, Helge Rosvaenge, Gerhard Hüsch...(who is arguably the finest Papageno ever put on wax, vinyl, tape, or aluminum backing). What makes it such a wonder, however, is Sir Thomas Beecham's leadership, at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic. Beecham, more so than any other conductor, knows how to strike the right balance between the slapstick silliness of some scenes and the gloriously solemn atmosphere of others. What truly makes Sir Thomas' interpretation unique is that he makes both aspects of the opera part of a whole--conceived in Mozart's own dualistic mind. I can think of no other better performance of this masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great, either.......2005-11-28

Actually, I would give this recording 3 1/2 stars. I am a fan of Gardiner's work, especially his Bach recordings, and I even like his recording of The Marriage of Figaro, but this recording wasn't quite as good as other recordings of The Magic Flute. I think that the results are uneven; some arias and ensembles (such as Papageno's "Ein Madchen Oder Weibchen") are good, but others are lacking. The singers are generally good, although none of them particularly stand out, in my opinion.

One of my objections to this recording, however, is Gardiner's interpretation. He claims to give us an authentic rendering of the opera, as he believes it was performed in 1791 (or as close as he can get, I suppose). I don't doubt that he is a meticulous and thorough scholar, but I think that in his attempt to give us the "authentic" Mozart, he sacrifices feeling and makes some decisions which grate on the ears. His tempos are far too fast on several occasions, and the orchestra often does not sound as majestic as I think it should. (Perhaps the latter is the fault of the recording (it is a live performance) or some other factor; I cannot really say.) Another example of sacrificing quality for authenticity is his use of boys for the roles of the three guide boys, which in many modern recordings are sung by women. As a matter of personal taste, I don't care for boys' voices, but I can understand using them for the sake of authenticity. However, the voices that Gardiner uses don't seem to work here and detract from the recording. Little things like that, I find, make the recording less spectacular than it could have been.

But a more serious complaint is that in the many moments in this opera where Mozart's music sends the listener into heavenly bliss (Mozart fans know that I am not exaggerating), I think that this effect is because of Mozart and not because of Gardiner. The little glimpses of heaven that I get when listening to, say, the "Bald Prangt, Den Morgen Zu Verkunden" quartet in Act II is not due to Gardiner's efforts, but Mozart's score alone, and that makes a great difference in my estimation of the recording. It seems almost trite to say that a recording becomes great due to the efforts of the conductor as well as the genius of the composer, but listening to this recording, I saw the truth of that statement, to my disappointment.

Another serious complaint is the price. It's simply unjustifiable for a record company to charge $42.00 (or more) for an opera, no matter how good. No recording of any opera is so fantastic that I would be willing to pay that much, and the fact that there are better recordings of this opera out there for less does not help. My personal favorite, which I consider the gold standard of Magic Flute recordings (and the competition is stiff), is EMI's 1962 recording made by Otto Klemperer, which you can find used or new for considerably less than what Deutsche Grammophon wants for the Gardiner version. It's not "authentic," by any means, but it's full of feeling and, unlike the Gardiner recording, I find it a joy to listen to from beginning to end, and that's what counts.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-11-06

Great performance, really brings the music alive. Terrific sound quality. You just can't turn it off.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-06

At least check it out of the library if you don't want to buy it! Cyndia Sieden is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Ostman is better.......2004-01-13

Gardiner is great. But I think Ostman (Decca) is even better. One drawback about Gardiner is that all his recordings are super expensive. Ostman would be a better bet. Now Decca has released all 4 Mozart operas (Zauberflote & the 3 Da Ponte operas) in a budget box set, I would get the budget box set from Decca, and then supplement it with one Gardiner, which isno longer competitive because the quality is the same but the price is more than double!!!!! Ridiculous!!

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2003-03-24

    This recording is really worthy...
the voices of Christane Oelze (pamina) and Cyndia Sieden (Königin der Nacth) are superb, also the male soloists
(and the rest) are excellent as well as the choir and the musicians.

    5 out of 5 stars GOOD LOVE.......2005-02-01

I discovered this album through a friend who was playing it in his car.The cut that stole my heart was "Just One Kiss." It's not just the magnetic melody and rhythm section, but the electricity between Geno Austin and his co-lead singer on this track that makes the track "burn." Another favorite of mine is the snappy, prescient "My Computer", a song written years ahead of its time foreshadowing the now popular online dating, email and instant messaging!

5 out of 5 stars Good-bye My Love, Hello Geno Austin!.......2004-12-16

No one sings about love better than Geno Austin. He is one of my '80's favorites. I'm glad this reissue finally came out! From heartache to happiness in love, Geno's songs touch my heart.
