Departure Lounge has always been a curious band, evolving over its two previous releases, both collections of singles, from a folk-pop outfit with a revolving cast of members led by singer-songwriter Tim Keegan, to a tightly knit quartet that makes wonderfully complex music. Incorporating elements of techno, cabaret, psychedelic rock, and classic '60s pop, Departure Lounge has developed a sound that may best be described as cosmopolitan folk: urbane and witty, yet always sincere. What makes this strange amalgamation work is the band's command of the various styles it employs. It is this aspect that finds its fullest expression on Jetlag Dreams, a collection of seven instrumental pieces. This is an album of moody and atmospheric pieces that are perfect for nightcaps and late-night comedowns. For longtime fans, Jetlag is a welcome holdover between full-lengths, while for newcomers it provides an intriguing introduction to one of today's most interesting bands. --Adam Silverman

5 out of 5 stars More Than Great Background Music.......2004-12-16

Departure Lounge is known for composing beautiful mood music worthy of a melodramatic soundtrack but they deserve even more credit than that on this album. One song on this album, "Too Late to Die Young," is a masterpiece, a fully-realized musical composition that is tearful and suggests loss, resolution, and transcendence. The album, though strong as a whole, is worth getting for that one song. If you like Departure Lounge's lachyromose soundtrack-like musical compositions, you might also check out the following: Coastal, Bark Pyschosis, Epic 45, High Llamas, Sweet Trip, Color Filter, Brazzaville, and Craig Armstrong.

4 out of 5 stars 9/11?.......2004-09-27

Anyone notice this album was released on September 11th, 2001? Hmm...maybe they should change their name to Thievery Corporation. Wait, no - that's what the White House should change their names to. Just kidding, kind of. Good album - very chill. Nice ambiance and sound mixing. Makes me remember 9/11. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Shhhhhhhhh- just listen!.......2004-04-10

SH(...). You won't really HEAR this if you don't listen carefully. If you don't stop what you are doing and open up, you will miss the soothing beauty that is 'Jetlag Dreams.' But once you DO give this priority, you will be hooked. Not unlike the instrumental compositions of Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and Sean O'Hagan of High Llamas, Departure Lounge constructs seven musical landscapes that can serve you in many ways: relaxing, coming down, going up, sleeping, awaking. This music can be enjoyed any time. Call it electronica, new age, easy listening, 'Jetlag Dreams' will take you places you need to go.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BAND - GREAT ALBUM.......2002-01-23

I hear they are working with Daniel Heavenward - the electronica artist on a new album or something...This would be cool.
