Couldn't ask for more.......2006-02-04
Picked this up for the DVD-Audio and I am not dissapointed. I saw another review that said the songs are incomplete and are in Stereo... they're complete and in full surround sound (it needs to be selected in the Set Up menu). Sound quality is great. I don't really care about extra features like interviews and lyrics - 5 stars for being a great album and great sound quality. I've been to Mark Knopfler concerts that had much poorer sound than this disc!
simply the best.......2005-10-09
mark knopfler is a craftsman, a technician and a bottomless reservoir of talent and finesse. He is the greatest ever.
Shangri La By Mark Knopfler.......2005-09-08
How can you go wrong with Mark Knopfler? He is an
excellent Guitarist and entertainer.
The album's great, the DVD is a con job.......2005-01-25
First off, the only reason this package gets four stars instead of five is the fact that the DVD accompanying it is a real con job!!
The video's anamorphic widescreen and the sound is Dolby stereo, but we only get interview snippets with Mark and his new band that run for about 30 minutes. Oh sure, there is terrific footage of them playing and recording live in the studio (including an unreleased track called "Summer Of Love") but none of the songs are complete!!
The album itself is great, stuck in the same groove as "Sailing To Philedelphia" (which isn't a bad thing) and features great songwriting as usual - just check out the lyrics for "Boom Like That", "Trawlerman's Song" and "Whoop De Doo".
The playing is laidback and intense, and Mark does get in a few of his trademark licks. Recommended.

Less rock, plenty of roll!.......2003-11-05
This album has been a long time coming, with the band having played these tracks since I first saw them back in 1999. It's been worth the wait though, with a distinctly grown-up sounding bunch of songs, performed by a band of such talented, talented musicians. The band describes the content as "Less rock, more roll" and this is evident through the instrumentation of double-bass, lots of piano and, as always, the wonderful guitar stylings which have become a trademark. Add to this the brilliant drumming and a horn section on a few numbers and you have a real treat.
The standout song for me is the title track, "Shangri-la" which is full of piano and an oh-so-foot tapping drum line: it's very hard not to get caught up in it. Vocalist Rob Snarski is an old-hand at taking the listener into the worlds they create, and you can almost see the neon-lights of the perfect fool's paradise. This contrasts with the dark "Deliver me" which will send (sorry about the cliché, but hey) shivers down your spine, and the beautiful "Lost Horizon", delivered with such tenderness.
An album which is suited just as much to Winter as it is Summer, Shangri-la is the kind of timeless work that you don't get enough of these days. Highly recommended!

Enjoyable but Predictable.......2007-01-29
You can tell that by the time Lana Lane released her 2002 album Project Shangri-La, she had found a style that she was comfortable with. The bombastic AOR with symphonic elements that you'll find on Project Shangri-La is pretty much the same as you'll find on 2000's Secrets of Astrology, which wasn't that far removed from 1999's Queen of the Ocean, and so forth. Lane and husband/keyboardist Erik Norlander definitely took the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach with this album.
It may not break any new ground, but Project Shangri-La is still a very solid album. Lane's style of symphonic AOR/melodic rock with soaring vocals is very reminiscent of what Heart was releasing in the late 1980's. This comparison applies to the music as well as Lane's vocals, which bear more than a passing resemblance to Ann Wilson's. The songs on Project Shangri-La are well written, and the instrumental passages serve as a nice counterpoint to Lane's powerful voice. Album highlights include the Beast Within You, Tears of Babylon, Life Is Only a Dream (featuring Mark Boals), and of course the title track.
All told, I'd give this album 3.5 stars. The music and vocals are great as always, but there's nothing that makes this particular album stand out from Lane's other releases.
