Album Description
Before a teenaged Al Anderson began his 22-year run with the well-loved and prolific NRBQ, he had The Wildweeds. Big Al, as he is known, wrote most of this collection of scorching rock and soul-influenced songs. This definitive lineup of The Wildweeds never put out an LP. Thus these tracks - many never released - form a great "lost" album of the 1960s.
For Confidential Recordings' in-depth package, Big Al not only lent his full cooperation, but also provided access to his personal collection of photographs and memorabilia. In addition, Wildweeds historian Richard Brukner interviewed other original band members and scores of family, friends and fans. His resulting sixteen pages of liner notes tell the complete story of The Wildweeds.
That story is also told by the music. At the collection's core are the eight songs that comprise the entirety of The Weeds' four single records released on Chess' Cadet label. Six previously unreleased tracks round out the set, including a searing cover of The Soul Sisters classic "I Can't Stand It" and "Fuzzy Wuzzy," a red-hot, fuzzed-out original instrumental. This compilation also debuts "No Good To Cry" in stereo and instrumental versions re-mixed and re-mastered from the original multi-track tapes by original producer Thomas "Doc" Cavalier.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Wildweeds Compilation.......2005-11-25
To be fair, the Wildweeds were more than just Al Anderson. While "Big Al" appeared to be the driving force behind the Weeds, the other members were certainly his equal, especially Ray Zeiner and Bob Dudek.
This is the 3rd Weeds compilation I've owned and it is without a doubt, the best one. All of the Weeds' soulful singles and "B" sides are included along with other great tunes that only folks lucky enough to see them live in the late 60's got to hear. There is none of that country crap that they did during their decline, which is included on the other compilations; no need to skip ahead to the next song.
If you enjoy other white soul groups such as the Young Rascals, you will certainly enjoy the Wildweeds.
What a treasure!!!!!.......2005-06-30
What a talent... I knew this 35 years ago... hearing these audio clips was an experience! Just buy it!!!!
Another long overdue, overlooked gem.......2004-01-15
Everyone in the Hartford, CT. area circa the mid 60s knew and loved Al Anderson and the Wildweeds. This material represents Anderson's blues and R&B roots versus his later rockabilly and country inclinations with NRBQ and as a songwriter for hire.
The single No Good to Cry was the pinnacle of the band's short-lived career, but there are another half dozen original gems on this fine CD.

Finally Released - Incredible Album!.......2002-02-18
This has not left my CD player in three months. Great tunes - Al Anderson's voice never sounded better. Not the soul style of "No Good To Cry," - instead it incorporates pedal steel (Charlie McCoy)and is more in the country vain. The bonus tracks are more R 'n B tinged (NRBQ-ish) - as for the album tracks, there is not a single weak spot.
Al Anderson's early years........2001-07-17
This is actually Al Andersons 2nd act with the Wildweeds, reborn as Nashville cats (with a few of the best real Nashville cats along for the ride). Al's Wildweeds actually started out as a blue eyed soul band who were right up there with the Rascal's in everything but fame. This is a terrific country rock album with great players (by the Wildweeds and their stellar guests), great singing and great songs. Ian Matthews even built a Southern Comfort L.P. around 2 or 3 of the songs on this album. If your looking for a lot of Al's gonzo guitar solo's (Chet Atkins meets Dick Dale), this is not the recording but it's a terrific introduction to one of the most talented musicians of our time. I wish Vanguard could get the rights to the Wildweeds early singles like, "No Good to Cry", this was a #1 soul hit that never charted Nationally (in Connecticut they were Stars). Someone should do a re-make of this song, if they don't, I will.
