On his seventh album (and first for Dave Matthews' ATO label), David Gray refines his sonic palette with wonderful results. The first record made in a "real" studio and the first done with an outside producer (MOR hotshot Marius De Vries), it's a nice improvement over 2002's lukewarm, sparsely electronicized New Day at Midnight. There's quite a bit of diversity afoot; "Hospital Food" begins with a sheen of '80s-cheese keyboards, while "Alibi" has an orchestral pop arrangement that brings to mind Rufus Wainwright collaborating with Jeff Lynne (and yes, that's a good thing). The album's title seems to refer as much to the fact that the album took three years to appear as the way the songs unfold glacially. With his band really fortifying him throughout, parts sound like Coldplay unplugged. But where that band's lyrics start with self-doubt and burrow inwards from there, Gray seeks absolution, something beyond himself. He also seems to have a sense of humor. It's too bad Six Feet Under is off the air; this entire album would make a great soundtrack for a special episode. Slow Motion is, in its subtle way, a huge step: the blue eyed folk-soul singer's first truly stadium-ready album. --Mike McGonigal

3 out of 5 stars No, no, no, no, no.......2007-06-12

Why, please someone tell me, would one of the best guitarists on the scene keep turning out mediocre piano tunes? I would lead David away from the keyboard and then smash the danged thing to smithereens. Then I would hand him a guitar and return to the audience. I mean, would you go see Richard Thompson if you knew he was going to play piano? Or Tony Levin play French Horn? Come on David, knock us out with six strings. Leave the ivory keys to Chris Martin. And the sea thing? We didn't like Christopher Cross when he did it. Why would we like it any more now? Now do what I say, David, and play son, play!

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with David Gray..........2007-05-23

If anyone can sound hot on their album, it would have to be David Gray. Cadence, gritty tone, deliberate phrasing of each line-- you can really FEEL what he's singing. This album (from what I understand) is heavier instrumentally, and has an orchestral sound. In my opinion, a beautiful accompaniment to Gray's voice, which can stand prefectly stand alone as well. A must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating Sound.......2007-05-21

Enjoyed the passion of the songs and the powerful music. Lyrics are interesting. What David writes about his lyrics and his new style of music was interesting. Just a good, emotionally moving, but mellow compilation of songs that may cause you to pause and think.

Seeing the lyrics were helpful, because his enunciation is not good at all times. I fell asleep while watching TV and the title song "Life in Slow Motion" was playing on an "ER" episode and the melody and passion behind the lyrics awoke me from my sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-19

I love this CD and every song that is on the CD!! David Gray is not sold at Target stores in my area. To find the time to track a Borders or a Barnes and Knoble that sells CD's is too much of my time wasted in my day. So I went to Amazon.com and ordered the CD on a Thursday night. I selected standard shipping and received my CD on Monday. I am planning on purchasing more of his CD's and will do so on Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot believe how good this is.......2006-12-27

This CD is addictive, I also bought others from David, nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to this masterpiece. Listen at least twice and then you are hooked, I was humming in the shower without knowing it..this is an awesome cd, right now, my favorite...wow what a find...if you enjoy music, you should love this!!!

Don't buy his old stuff, David, we are waiting for your NEXT

WOW

5 out of 5 stars A New Level of Perfection !!.......2007-02-23

For some who already know of David Gray this is an album that takes some getting use to. When my wife and I first listened to it it took us by surprise. We,like most are use to most David Gray songs being driven by his voice and a strong guitar. This album however has much more to added to it. Why shouldn't it? He has said himself that he is no longer the "underdog" but the "overdog" so he should start acting like it:) He has bought Church Studios and has a new producer to help him. Any one who has heard him live knows he is always working on past songs to make the most out of them. On this album he has taken some time off (3 years) and taken his time adding new levels to his song layouts and production. This is an album that was mostly written and performed on piano. We ended up listening to it twice in a row. The first time we didn't expect such a big production so the second time was to enjoy it now that we knew what to expect. I have found out that a lot of these songs were written to be used as a movie soundtrack and it sounds like that was the intent. From it's gradual introductions to it's slow tempo through most of the album it has a definite emotional theme that takes you on a soulful journey. Some have complained that this album is "too slow" and it may be compaired to his other albums but that should only bother those who haven't taken the time to listen to his words and beautiful melodies and accept this as it's own album full of his usual passion and power. After the first listen you will have each haunting and fun song stuck in your head. After getting all the singles for the wonderful bonus B-sides I'm convinced this should have been a double album.
The bonus DVD side has a wonderful "behind the scenes" video of Gray and his drummer Clune working on the album and Gray talking about what made him write certain songs. I love stuff like this. It shows the creation of the songs I cerish and lets us see Grays thinking and creative process. I only pray all his albums have features like this on them from now on. In todays world where there is so much room on discs why shouldn't they. I hope this helped:)

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, beautiful pop masterpiece........2007-02-15

Even White Ladder's the best work yet from David Gray, this CD gives something else: planning. What? Plannig? Yes... White Ladder was the last chance for Mr Gray to continue in the music bussiness and eventually it would be his best selling album. But here, you don't feel presion, hurry or even a simple mod. Everything here is where it has to be. Mr. Gray is a talented man and you can notice he planned everything in detail. He was so precise that you have to use hearphones to notice some details on his music and vocals (that's not a problem for me but maybe some people could think it is... besides if you use a Home Theather you'll notice everything). You have to listen this work several times to get it but when you do, you get an incredible experience. Don't waste your time thinking that Gray has left his talent behind... here is the proof you need to know that the better is yet to come. BTW... this edition DOES NOT offers 5.1 sound. Only PCM so you might want to consider your buying for the regular edition. If you are not an English speaker, you'll find this edition useful since the lyrics appears on screen while you listen to the music. I love that!

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Life in steady motion.......2006-04-22

It would be too easy to say that David Gray's seventh album Life In Slow Motion isn't quite as good as his breakout album White Ladder. And I can't compare this disc to A New Day at Midnight because I didn't even know it existed until I came onto this site. If there's anything great to say about this album, it's that David hasn't strayed away from his style.

David's singing style has an acquired taste, so it might be easy for some to dismiss him because his voice is too weird, for example (this is especially shown in the first song, "Alibi"). The songs I like more than anything else are "Lately" and "Slow Motion". But one song that I can live without is "Hospital Food". Although even negative reviewers like it, I personally don't think it makes any sense.

Everything else on the album is pretty decent, although nothing really jumps out at you like "Babylon" or "Please Forgive Me". If you've been a fan of David Gray since day one, then you shouldn't be mad after you pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to Your Album Collection.......2006-01-08

Life In Slow Motion has everything a great album needs. It has upbeat songs such as Hospital Food and The One I Love, the latter of which will make you think, "This sounds great! Have I heard this before?" Life In Slow Motion also has slower songs that you can relate to when you are down; my favorite being Slow Motion.

Do not expect another White Ladder, as Life In Slow Motion has a very different sound.

The DVD side of the DualDisc contains a very neat lyric book. The lyric book's pages flip automatically as you listen to the album. The documentary is a great addition. I was surprised at how well David Gray performed in the studio and practice sessions. The quality of his voice is identical to the album. David Gray is a very talented performer.

Be aware that the CD side of the DualDisc will not play on some CD players. It plays fine on my computer running Windows XP but will not play on my 1996 Subaru car stereo.

Overall, Life In Slow Motion is a great album. You won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars David Gray.......2005-11-13

David Gray's newest release Life in Slow Motion is just that, Slow. I found it to be nice, pretty music, but it was way too slow for my liking.

It also was not that memorable of an album. After a listen, I could not look at the track listing and sing any memorable choruses. It just didn't really impress me that much.

The music itself is pretty and beautiful and he's got a great voice, but the album just isn't that special. It lack that extra something that made White Ladder such a wonderful album.
