I can understand why so many people have come to like this band, it's easy to. They're a perfect mix of pop, goth, and metal, and quite catchy. I bought this never having heard one song, and now love it. I will say I decided to buy based on the two covers. Both are excellent, and I think HIM was born to cover "Wicked Game", musically and lyrically. This singers voice is a great match on all these tracks. Other stand-outs to me are "Your Sweet Six Six Six", "Our Diabolical Rapture", and "When Love And Death Emrace". All have a good hook. Regardless of your taste, minus country, you'll most likely love "Greatest Love Songs 666".

This is a nice blend of hard music without going going "overboard". It combines goth metal elements with pure rock. What makes this my favorite HIM album is because I feel that Ville's haunting voice was made for this dark style of music, it's unfortunate that they've since turned into wusses. The highlight of this album is the remake of the memorable Chris Isaak song, "Wicked Game", HIM's whole new edgy take on this song makes it seem as if that song was made for them. Overall, this is a great album for listeners of goth metal.

Him lps are inconsistant. But this one is probably their second best. "The Heartless" and "It's All Tears" are worth the price of the cd alone. Buy it.

I would give this 5 stars except that HIM has done better, the recording process is a little weird (but neat). But this is a very cool album, with 'Your Sweet Six Six Six' and the lovely 'For You'. I give their cover of 'Don't Fear the Reaper' a 5 star, it is just incredible! This album is definately worth owning!

The second Belly album was a washout, but solo songs like "Pretty Deep" take advantage of Donelly's wispy vocals with a smartly paced, coolly rocking feel; it even soars on the strength of a video based on the sci-fi classic The Illustrated Man. I really love this album. It's got a really good flow; it's rocking and melancholy. Tanya Donelly has great vocals. I think it's a timeless album and she's a great musician.

A fantastic album -- Tanya seems much more free to express her own style now that she's on her own (not part of Belly, Throwing Muses, etc.). This is a somewhat more low-key Tanya than we saw before, but there is still that electric guitar, rock sound going on. And as expected, the real magic is in the lyrics. My personal favorite is "Mysteries of the Unexplained," a breathtaking vision which addresses the question, "what is beauty?" and gives a very satisfying answer.

This album by Tanya Donelly rocks! However, it is a little underproduced and underrated. It's a bummer that this album went out of print within 5 years after it was released in 1997. For some reason, Reprise Records won't reissue it. 4AD, Tanya Donnely's current label should. I found an import album listed on here which contains two extra tracks. I find that import album is really not worth the [$] for a single disc, just for the two extra tracks. You would be better off going to the Zshops or auctions trying to find a used copy of the domestic release on CD or vinyl. It's worth the hunt and would cost MUCH less than [$]...

'Do I look like a liar to you?'

So starts a wonderful pop rock alt gem called Lovesongs for Underdogs.. I had a hard time putting this cd away for about a year after I got it. The guitar hooks and lyrics are easily as good, and sometimes better than her Belly / Muses days..

I'm sure I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting a new album from Tanya. This should definitely be in your collection if you ever liked her previous band incarnations..

Please get busy Miss Donelly and give us more of what you were born to do...

I think this album is brilliant! I love the way the songs are remixed! If you are a fan of H.I.M. I think you will enjoy this album! I would recommend this to all fans!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning....but not perfect.......2006-03-20

This album, while not one of HIM's best, is definitely amazing.

It begins with "For You", a strong song which gets this album off to a good start. Following is "Your Sweet Six Six Six", which I personally think is the best track on the album. Razorblade Romance includes this song too, but this is a different version and better by far, with more background music.
Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" comes next. This song is completely unique for HIM, and is a pleasant surprise (better than the version on Razorblade Romance). It has a memorable guitar beat that will stick in your head for a few hours.

"The Heartless" is a beautiful song. "Our Diabolikal Rapture" actually reminds me of Chevelle, but don't judge the whole album on that--this is a very unusual song.

My second favorite song on this album is "It's All Tears", which seems like something off of Love Metal or Razorblade Romance. The lyrics are really good. Then we have "When Love and Death Embrace" (very beautiful and sad) and "The Beginning of the End" (again, LM/RR).

This album builds to a stunning close with "The Reaper". This song makes good use of female vocals--it takes skill to use male and female in one song, and HIM definitely pulls it off here. This track is nothing short of haunting. The lyrics are amazing.

The only complaints I have about this record are that it's too short, and that it has 66 tracks, 56 of which are silence. I had to burn a copy just to be able to put it on shuffle. The very last track is a wordless song with lots of static.

Anyway, this is really a good CD, so get it, especially if you like "Wings of a Butterfly", which everyone's heard by now. Okay?

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD--But it's too short!!.......2006-02-26

I originally bought this CD for two reasons, I like the new HIM song, Wings of a Butterfly, and I wanted to see what they would do with Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper. I was pleasantly suprised. The CD had a lot of great songs on it. I really like the song Your Sweet Six-Six-Six. Wicked Game is also one of the better songs on this CD in my opinion. My favorite track is still Don't Fear the Reaper. HIM found a way to add their own unique sound to this Classic. This song is so good that in my opinion it is worth buying the CD just for this track. This CD will really give you a taste of the sounds of HIM.

dont confuse it with the first him record TO debut, because that would be DARK LIGHT. GSL is the first record HIM ever made, and it's finally in america...i love it, i just wanted to be the first one to review that's all. props to me.

Robert Hale & Dean Wilder sang at our church in 1978 & I purchased the record album and have enjoyed it so much that it finally wore out from much playing. I am glad to finally find that it has been rereleased in a digital format. I can now enjoy these wonderful love songs for many years to come. I highly recommend this album to anyone who appreciates the wonderful music from the mid 70's.

        Very cool album. Little bit Radiohead, little bit early Pink Floyd. Great atmospheric songs with strange noises and beautifull melody lines. For anyone who likes Mogwai but would like some vocals with it.
