From the confusion and chaos that marked one of the most harrowing episodes in American history comes Tori Amos's masterwork. Scarlet's Walk, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed covers LP, Strange Little Girls, was written on a cross-country road trip shortly after the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Over the course of 3,000 miles and 18 tracks, the crimson-haired singer encounters rogue lovers ("A Sorta Fairytale"), reformed porn stars ("Amber Waves"), and an entire cast of characters who embody the spirit of a country suddenly searching for an identity. The album serves as both an ambitious travelogue and as a graceful rejoinder to the bitterness and frustration that inspired it, with Amos wading through swells of sadness ("I Can't See New York"), anger ("Don't Make Me Come to Vegas"), and insecurity ("Your Cloud") with velvety grace. --Aidin Vaziri

The Greatest Album of All Time. Period........2007-07-05
For years, I toyed with the idea of writing a review for this, my most favorite album of all time. Then I decided that nothing I could possibly write could do it justice, and that I would have to instead write a book about it.
In the meantime, heres a rundown - do yourself a favor and get this, no matter WHAT your musical tendencies. Here are a few things of note:
1. Every song is memorable and replayable - An achievement in this day and age. No two songs have the same melodies or musical styles.
2. The lyrics are the best Tori has ever put to paper. These are her most accessible lyrics - this is one album on which she put aside her eccentric songwriting in favor of more obviously meaningful words.
3. The Flow - The seamless transition from one song to the next in terms of narrative should be heard to be believed. Every song links to the next, but they also work wonderfully when listened to separately.
4. The Message - Tori has made a record for America, but its also her least American record, in many ways. It is so blatantly anti-American at some points, but not in a critical fashion, but more like 'Look at what we've done!' - amazing.
5. The voice - I own all Amos' albums, and I can honestly report that she sounds the best on "Scarlet's Walk".
6. The Replay Factor - This is the only Amos album I find myself reaching for even when I have newer albums with me that need playing. This is an achievement, yes, but if you think of music as an artistic investment, this is the only CD I can think of that will pay you back so richly.
The Music:
1. "A Sorta Fairytale" : Perhaps her greatest single - and her most politically controversial. She obviously sides with the Native Indians on this one. This is a song to memorize and sing to yourself - in fact, you will remember most of the lyrics within two listens!
2. "Another Girls' Paradise" : An underrated Tori gem, this track is found tacked toward the end of this 80 minute album. Its soaring chorus, amazing play on flower-names, and gorgeous imagery - a truly remarkable song indeed.
3. "Wednesday" - Tying in with Neil Gaiman's "American Gods", this is one song that instantly won me over and is the most playful, in a 1960s retro style, on the record. One for keeps.
4. "Carbon"/"Strange"/"Crazy" : The best trilogy of songs in recorded music history. Listen, and become a believer.
This is as musically rich and empowered an album as they come.
Thinking of it while I write, I am tempted to tell you about the stark beauty of "Virginia", or the goosebump inducing lyrical quality of "Gold Dust". But then I would also have to tell you about the snazzy production on "Don't Make me come to Vegas", as well as the chorus-dominated opener "Amber Waves".
There is a reason this is No. 1 of all-time albums, on my list. No other album on earth mixes musical genre, stellar songwriting, and breathtaking vocals, as much as this one does.
Years after its release, Tori Amos "Scarlet's Walk" remains the Greatest Album ever recorded.
Words do not do it justice. Get this now, and discover it for yourself.
Nice idea, but..........2007-05-10
I like Tori Amos but this is lukewarm and doesn't work. With the exception of the lush Virginia and maybe a few others, the tracks sound musically faint and too wordy with repetitive choruses. Gone are Amos's sublime piano solos - now we have a lightweight band, which fails to bring out any of her edginess.
The theme being, one woman's journey around the states, looking at the land in a historical context. Nice idea, but she's touched on this before, and there are no points for doing it now in a watered down fashion.
I hate to trash a Tori album but she doesn't take you anywhere, she just presents vague ideas/ideals, and with eighteen tracks, you cannot help but ask `are we there yet?'
Best tracks: Virginia, Another Girls Paradise, Amber Waves.
Great album but not the packaging.......2007-03-21
I purchased this cd as a gift for my sister. The cd she received was packaged with only the cd, not the bonus dvd, the stickers and the map that I received when I originally purchased the cd for myself. I was disappointed that I was not informed that the extras would not be included.
But... the music is some of Tori's best work.
We hold gold-dust in our hands........2006-12-01
This is the most accessible Tori Amos album since Under the Pink. It offers incredibly cohesive, atmospheric, dynamic and melodic compositions. Scarlet's Walk is a masterwork of post-9/11 sadness, cynicism and hope. Get this and Springsteen's The Rising and realize that there were a few artists up to the challenge of articulating our national malaise.
A Walk of the Human Spirit.......2006-11-20
In a post Septemeber 11th world, Tori unleashed the epic "Scarlet's Walk" toward the end of 2002. Recently herself free from Atlantic Records (now signed to Epic), the pain of miscarriages (chronicled throughout "from the choirgirl hotel"), & angst of yore, Tori seemed revitilized, if still driven.
"Scarlet's Walk" is a celebration of America through the eyes of a woman named Scarlet, who tries to find her way through a post-9/11 America. It also mirrors Scarlet's ancestry, her bloodline linked to the Cherokee Indians, & the experiences they shared. But please don't be fooled by the slighly large concept. This record is about life, the true human experience, in varied forms. Tori's own happiness in marriage & finally having a child come through here.
Musically, Tori still uses the piano very much in her work, but there is more. You find colorful latin percussion, soft jazz backdrops, assured guitar work, & dark programming. She seems more focused on not just trying to blind people with experimentation for experimentation sake, which often could scar some of her best work.
But the lyrical work is what shines. From the melancholy of found & lost love of "A Sorta Fairytale", to the moodiness of "Sweet Sangria", & to the saddest, & most intelligent break-up songs ever "Your Cloud", Tori spins stories. They capivate through the use of her familiar colored vocal styling. She sounds confident & knows her strengths & weaknesses, using them to her advantage.
Other highlights include: the epic "Gold Dust", the late-"nite" feel of "Strange", the open road splendor of "Taxi Ride", with the expansive shock of "I Can't See New York" (does it address the attacks on America, look closer)they all work wonders.
One might complain that Tori has lost her "spark", that she can only write songs about love & open roads. But if the album cover is any indication, while Tori seems lost in the open road of life, the assured look upon her face & the assured sound in her music, say otherwise. Highly recommended.

The music becomes part of you..........2007-07-08
The Scarlet Pimpernel is so rich and lyrical, and the story is so compelling, it has become part of who I am. Delivered by a magnificent cast, the music is visceral. Take a ride on the "Carousel" and go "Into the Fire." Vive'!
A piece of greatness.......2007-07-02
Each of the three official Scarlet Pimpernel recordings have things to offer, but this is probably a good choice for starters. In my opinion, Rex Smith on this recording and Terrance Mann on the OBC both do a phenominal job on "Falcon In The Dive" and "Where's The Girl." The same goes with Rachel York and Christine Andreas's performances-- although I tend to prefer Rachel a bit more. Both of the re-recorded tracks by her are simply amazing. Although I can understand why this production never had much of a staged success, the score is simply gorgeous.
SCARLET PIMPERNEL .......2007-06-15
I have a cassette version (yep, a cassette!) of this musical, as I collect
musicals for professional reasons.....I like Frank Wildhorn's music, but the first and foremost reason I bought THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL is because
my favorite actor Terrence Mann originated the role of CHAUVELIN. His cover of WHERE'S THE GIRL sends little shivers up my spine....wooo! That song is worth the price the CD! Teri
Brilliant Musical.......2007-05-24
The music has everything - romance, wit, lush melodies, slapstick comedy. Quite the best music in a musical show for some years. I can't wait for the show to be produced in the U.K.
Quite Fantastic.......2007-05-13
This was the first time I had ever heard the Scarlet Pimpernel's music. I first stumbled onto the fact that there was a Scarlet Pimpernel musical when I was surfing YouTube and came across a music video which consisted of a recording of 'Falcon in the Dive'.
I was spell-bound. After hearing snippets of some of the other songs, i ordered this CD. I was a little surprised when I got it to find some pieces that I didn't remember seeing in the libretto. However, I have since discovered that there are quite a number of different recordings with some variety in the pieces that are included.
It is a truly charming and impressive sountrack. Douglas Sills impressed me deeply with his wide range of talent. He transposes himself from a heart-wrenching sincerity (The Prayer) to a glriously hilarious foppishness (The Creation of Men, The Scarlet Pimpernel). For someone with such a wonderful voice, he does do an exquisitely inane laugh.
Christine Andreas was very sweet as Marguerite, though I felt she over-did the tremulo slightly.
I was blown away by Terrence Mann. His Chauvelin was magnificent. Powerful, passionate, soothing, and vengeful. In the musical, I felt, Chauvelin regained some humanity.
The pieces are clever and vibrant, covering an impressive range of emotions. The lyrics can be full of pathos, or extraordinarily witty, and I enjoyed the CD very much indeed.
The only regret I have is that I am unlikely ever to see the stage performance. I can heartily reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who enjoys the Scarlet Pimpernel, or indeed anyone who appreciates fine singing.

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.
Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16
This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.
Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25
Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....
Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11
I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.
Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14
My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.
The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.
The Spirit of America.......2005-10-10
This is a great CD...of course, Daniel Rodriquez is the best!!!
As much as I enjoyed it, I do think "In the Presence", also by the same vocalist, is the ultimate. That could be because "In the Presence" was the first CD I had of this tenor vocalist, who is outstanding!

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

USMA Glee Club scores a real hit.......2006-11-14
This album is awe-inspiring. I bought the album after hearing an out take from "Men of Freedom", the tune is from an old Welsh battle song. You will recognize the tune if you saw Zulu Dawn with Michael Caine. Many of the other songs are equally powerful and mesmerizing. The only songs I didn't like were when the Glee club used guest soloists. They were less impressive and, in my opinion, took away from the strength of the group.
I liked the multiple verses sung from America, I wished they would have given the Star Spangled Banner the same treatment. The Mansions of the Lord is powerful and supremely reverent, as is Rise Up. I would dearly like to hear more from this talented group of soldiers.
Reverent, Full of Love.......2006-09-26
When I saw and heard this music broadcast Veteran's Day on TBN and my friends serving in our Armed Forces in Iraq saw it broadcast on Armed Forces Network, I was so happy to find the stereo CD and companion Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DVD on Amazon. I cannot stop listening to it! The 60 minute musical program, reminiscent of the great concept albums of years ago, is one of the most reverent, intelligent and passionate portrayals of America's character ever produced. It contains many styles of choral music - all superbly performed by the world famous Cadet Glee Club of West Point arrayed in breathtaking formation on the altar of the massive 100 year old Cadet Chapel. There are richly textured vocal a capella songs such as "Rise Up O Men of God", "Manisons of the Lord", one of the most popular new hymns written, and "America (My Country `Tis of Thee)". Your buttons will burst with pride when you hear the brand new song "Men of Freedom" introduced by a single Cadet then followed by a cascade of additional voices building to a unified and thunderous declaration of defiant freedom in a style reminiscent of the great Welsh Male Choirs. Four songs highlight the power and majesty of the largest church organ in the world. You'll have to fight the urge to stand at attention when you hear and feel its power kick in on "Lest We Forget", "On Great Lone Hills", "Jerusalem" and "This Christmastide". The musical variety is further enhanced by the addition of brass and percussion for the rousing marches, "The Longest Day" and "Non Nobis". When was the last time you heard these two songs - one by world famous singer, songwriter and teen idol, Paul Anka and the other a medieval celebration of thanksgiving sung in Latin! The rich background vocals of the Cadet Glee Club musically frame two songs that underpin the message of this album - Bravery and Sacrifice. "Into the Fire" by NYPD's Daniel Rodriguez made me want to immediately rise up and rush to anyone's aid and when he holds that note at the end - wow! Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga's performance of the classic Christian hit, "Via Dolorosa", (one of the top 50 Christian songs of all time), is "The Passion of the Christ" embodied in a 5 minute song. You will alternate between tears and goose bumps. Her performance of the Spanish stanza will overwhelm you. Finally, Irish song writing master, Phil Coulter's wistful "Take Me Home" is accompanied by beautiful piano and guitar and introduced by a new poem entitled "I Am A Soldier" that is sobering reminder of the oath our soldiers swear to and the actions they are bound to take. God bless them!
A great bonus of the CD and DVD is that they both include a stylish lyric booklet as well as commentary by the producer on why he chose each song.
On the back cover of the CD and DVD cases is the statement that this production was created to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, and the great values of America that they defend. This it surely does!! Also, it states that the producer is contributing a portion of his wholesale proceeds from its sale to organizations assisting our wounded soldiers. Bravo, Mr. Coppi.
Good CD.......2006-07-19
Wonderful songs and wonderful renditions of the songs. I must say, though, that the numbers would have been better if they were performed with more "ooomph" (for instance, "The Star Spangled Banner" could have been sung with more power and the arrangement could have used more creativity). The wisest decision on this CD was the inclusion of the numbers from Ms. Lea Salonga (whose hauntingly beautiful voice is able to effectively draw listeners in) and Daniel Rodriguez, one of America's newest tenors. Overall a good CD.
A real disappointment..........2006-06-10
I was so excited to stumble upon this album when a local music store was going out of business and selling CD's at great discounts. I love Glee Club music, I love patriotic music, and I love cathedral/chapel accoustics. Unfortunately, this album did not live up to its billing.
My primary complaints with this recording are twofold: the overuse of unison singing and the unnecessary inclusion of guest soloists. The beauty of glee club music is the rich chords, which are thankfully heard in many songs. To my dismay, though, there are many songs that mostly or entirely omit the beautiful harmonies that make glee clubs great.
As for the guest soloists, I don't understand why a singing group which obviously has many wonderful voices would bring in outsiders for an album like this. Actually, I do know why they would do it, and it's obviously a marketing thing that has financial implications. As reasonable as this may seem, it just cheapens the experience for me. Another great feature of glee clubs (and college choirs more generally) is the lack of polished, perfect, professional singers. There is something raw, authentic, and refreshing about a bunch of college kids singing together. Why bring in random people with no particular connection to the group?
To be fair, "Rise Up, O Men of God" and "Mansions of the Lord" are fantastic. I'll continue to play this album to listen to those songs. However, much of the remainder is somewhat forgettable.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29
This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.
Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17
I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.
Powerful!.......2003-01-22
Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.
Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18
I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

--Aidin Vaziri

excellent.......2006-01-29
Tori Amos is an amazing storyteller, and Scarlet's Walk is exactly that. Videos on bonus DVD are pretty, and the trinket that comes with the package is cute!
Beautiful packaging with an excellent CD. .......2005-03-27
If you enjoy Scarlet's Walk, this is the format you should buy the CD in. This is a great little package with all the extras you get. Scarlet's Walk is worth owning already without the extras, but this gives a little extra something to the fans. I would recommend this, it's worth every penny.
Tori Amos at Her Most Mature, If Not Best.......2005-02-23
On 2002's Scarlet's Walk, Tori Amos mixes beautifully thought-provoking lyrics and lush melodies and piano arrangements to create an incredible, unforgettable album. Each song connects to the next in a series much like the chapters of a book - Amos herself describes this album as a "sonic novel", told mostly in the views of not so much her alter-ego as varied levels of her consciousness, Scarlet, who encounters various characters as she travels across American in search of the path that she has lost. Although all of the songs are rich in emotion and texture, "Gold Dust", "Wampum Prayer", "Virginia", and "Pancake" are among some of the most detailed and well thought out. Each song deserves five stars at the least, and this album, although not nearly as piano-pounding nor as eccentric as her previous albums, Scarlet's Walk is well worth the buy as just the album or as a special edition set.
A journey through America's past and present........2005-01-16
"Scarlet's Walk" is an example of music today that analyzes America, its politics, history, and people. It focuses mostly on the treatment of repressed minorities by the American government throughout America's short history. Most significantly, the album focuses around the plights of the Native American people, a subject that only recently has gained attention in schools. However, when it is talked about in schools, it is almost always misconstrued and clouded to show Americans as the "good guys" and Native Americans as the "bad guys." This album is constructed as a sonic novel of sorts. The songs function almost like chapters painting a picture of the United States' past, present, and possible future. Whether concerning Native Americans, homosexuals, or other repressed peoples, Amos tells the story from seemingly every angle. Sometimes the subject matter gets very dark, but Amos portrays the country the way she sees it, the good and the bad. This "novel" is told from the perspective of a character named Scarlet, whom Amos refers to as her alter ego. Like Amos, Scarlet is a descendent of the Cherokee people, hence the incredible emphasis on Native American history throughout the story. Scarlet is on a post September eleventh road trip, and each of the songs details certain parts of her journey. Along her way, she meets many different people, visits sacred Indian lands, and begins to question what she believes in. A tour de force from start to finish, "Scarlet's Walk" is an unsettling yet empowering journey through the American history not taught in schools. Some highlights include the first single, "a sorta fairytale," the second single and best song on the album, "Taxi Ride," the September 11th-themed "I can't see New York," "Scarlet's Walk," and the heart-breaking "gold dust." This version of the album contains a bonus DVD with videos for "a sorta fairytale" (though not the promotional clip shown on MTV & VH1) and "gold dust" that show behind-the-scenes footage of Amos at various road-stops during the photo-shoot for the album; you have the option to listen to her commentary on those songs and the project itself, or just sit back and watch the images and listen to the music. There is also a photo gallery with the song "Taxi Ride" as the backdrop. Also included in this set is a map of Scarlet's journey through America with the song lyrics on the back, a sheet of Scarlet-inspired stickers, and a charm (it could be anything ranging from a metal seal to a plastic frog - there's no telling what goody you'll end up with).
Is this all?.......2004-10-12
After listening to this several times, I was left feeling something was lacking. It's as if she ran out of inspiration. 'Gold dust' is the notable exception. The lyrics and music complement each other to the degree of 'Winter' & 'China' from Little Earthquakes.
Also, her live performances were a let down from the past. She had no fire.......... not even a small spark. As if she couldn't in fact, relate to her songs either.

Passionate Beauty.......2003-11-15
John Barry hits a jackpot yet again with this beautiful score that stirs you right to the heart. The film was so-so, but it's worth watching if only to see how Barry performs his magic with a perfect marriage of music/film. I am somewhat partial to Barry, but I'm serious.... this is one of his very finest.
beautiful!.......2002-03-24
This is one of the best soundtracks I think I've ever heard. I had read the book and decided to watch the not-so-accurate movie The Scarlet Letter, and when I heard the music, the soundtrack definitely made second on the list of my favorites. I haven't bought the cd yet but am hoping to own it soon. The love theme is so passionate that it seems to enrich the audience's perception of Hester and Dimmesdale's romance. I could listen to this music forever; the only bad thing about it is that it has the repulsive word "rape" in one of the track titles. Other than that, though, I recommend this to any music lover.
Not one of Barry's Best ...........2002-01-11
However, still beautiful in it's on right. It had several dark and brooding pieces as someone mentioned before. If you enjoy Barry's work before my only critical critique is that a lot of the songs seemed to be repeated there wasn't a distinction from one suite to the next as seen before in his other works.
5 1/2 Stars!.......2000-10-12
This is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in ages! John Barry once again captures the very essence of the human heart in this sondtrack. It is a bit redundant at times (tracks 4, 5, 8, 12, and 23 are all the exact same theme, only with slightly different instumentation), but this can be excused because the theme is so lush and passionate that I actually wanted to hear it over and over. Also included are several dark, brooding themes related to Chillingworth (track 14), the Elders (track 9, et. al.), and the Indian attack (track 21). I particularly favor scaffold-scene tracks 13 and 20 ("She Will Not Speak" and "I am the Father of Her Child") and the beautiful vocal arrangement of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (track 6).
Beauty in many different fields of interest........2000-04-18
This soundtrack, while not from the best movie ever made, could just as well be a contender for that category. Combining Native American rhythms with naturistic compositions and soft, mellow themes, The Scarlet Letter soundtrack, composed by John Barry, is a breathtaking mix of beauty. Native American influences can be heard in numerous tracks throughout, most significantly in the beginning song and the dark themes related to Roger Chillingworth. Nature's beauty can be felt in track three, entitled "The Bird-The Swimmer," as the composer uses percussion instruments, strings, and a boy's choir to bring the forest to life. The more suspenseful music, evident in tracks nineteen and twenty-one, use forceful drums, horns and strings to accompany the ending scenes. Although the movie has been hailed as a total disaster, it is a far cry from that of its soundtrack, which is nothing short of amazing.
