4 out of 5 stars Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19

Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.

5 out of 5 stars Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15

Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.

5 out of 5 stars Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11

I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Good coloratura work by Elizabeth Futral.......2007-05-27

This is an interesting CD from soprano Elizabeth Futral. The theme of this is a set of operatic arias sung in English, not in the original French or Italian or. . . . I'm not sure how sold I am on the concept, but, after all, it's the singing and musicality that is most important. And, by that measure, Elizabeth Futral does very nicely.

The accompanying booklet begins by noting that (page 8) "The voice of the light soprano has enchanted listeners for centuries." Futral's singing is characteristic of this type of voice.

In this era, any coloratura soprano has two challenges: first, to compare with the past generation's astonishingly talented practitioners, well exemplified by Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sill. Second, though, there are some wonderful coloratura sopranos today against whom others will be compared, with Natalie Dessay and Sumi Jo among the most adept. Thus, Futral will almost automatically be compared with such exemplars. I do not think one could say she is the equal of those four just mentioned, but she does not compare badly either.

From the Wikipedia: "In musical notation, the Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are sounded in a detached and distinctly separate manner, with silence making up the latter part of the time allocated to each note. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato should be played or sung abruptly and short." This is worthy of comment, since the "Bell Song" from "Lakme," one of the selections on this CD, features many such notes. Futral sings them well. Her performance in this work is well done (although it is somewhat jarring, again, to hear it sung in English). She begins with a nice high note and a bang up following trill. She displays good agility and features nice technique on staccato notes. Overall, this is well done. Toward the end, which calls for great ornamentation, she seems a bit hesitant at time, but she concludes with a nicely sung high note.

Other examples of her singing. From Handel's "Alcina," she sings "Come take me in your arms." Her voice is a light, standard coloratura voice (although not all coloratura sopranos have such a voice, of course). She displays considerable agility, a decent trill, and good ornamentation. There is a bit of harshness on a high note toward the close, but hardly fatal to the overall positive effect of her singing.

From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," there is "My soul is filled with love for you" (otherwise known as "O luce di quest'anima"). Her version is not too shabby when compared with such greats as Sutherland and Jo. The cabaletta shows off, again, her agile voice. Good staccato high notes. Nice trills and a well nailed final high note.

Then there is the charming "Son vergin vezzosa" from Bellini's "I Puritani," here entitled "A maiden adorning." Again, nice agility, good trills, well done florid singing technique. While there is some harshness in the penultimate high note, overall, well done.

In short, Futral adds to a currently rich supply of coloratura sopranos, and compares well with the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars At Last a Solo Recital on CD.......2005-03-19

Elizabeth Futral is one of those rare sopranos who seems to put pacing of her career, care of the voice, and commitment to repertoire range ahead of the too early media blitz that can hamper a singer's career. Clearly she has it all - beauty of voice, beauty of physical presence, fine acting skills, intelligence, and interpretive insights.

Having seen her Cleopatra in LA Opera's GUILIO CESARE and in SF Opera's production of Previn's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE put her high on the list of important new sopranos. This rather strange recording gives samples of her foray's into all styles from Handel to Previn and does a fine job in capturing the beauty of her phrasing and quality of her seamless soprano voice. It is somewhat distracting to place a first recital recording before the public being sung entirely in English, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Futral's gifts. But credit Chandos with the courage to try something different, something that may introduce new audiences to the opera field.

Surely after the recent successes of Futral performances in the opera houses more recordings will follow. Meanwhile this is a tasty sampler of just how versatile - and special - Elizabeth Futral is. Grady Harp, March 05

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting display.......2003-07-23

Coloratura-soprano Elizabeth Futral is a remarkable artist with a beautiful instrument and a most impressive technique. Her appearences in record stores are mostly on lesser known and up and coming labels such as Opera Rara and CHANDOS; with a few performances on DG.

This CD has an unusual semi-personal package. Duets, trios and quartets are featured. The title of the program is called Great Operatic Arias which seems rather broad for a soprano recital disc.

Futral sings well as always, however the content seems to lack a bit of intricacy and polish. Each aria, duet etc leaves you wondering whether or not a bit more time could have been put into this. The arias range from baroque to 20th century; covering four languages.

The entire program is performed in English and this is interesting... Although some of the arias just sound plain strange in English! It is a very nice thing to actually completely and instantly understand what is being sung. I was most impressed with the CHANDOS Lucia di Lammermoor. Futral probably gave her best performance on record in that role. She is astonishingly good on that recording. Her mad scene is awesome!

Overall this is a pleasing recording and Futral dazzles her listeners with her crystal clear high notes and vibrant tone. I look forward to more recordings of her. Hopefully she'll have a chance to record some more opera in its original language. I think that its time for a new Puritani or Sonnambula. Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate?

5 out of 5 stars gloomapalooza.......2001-11-18

deliciously gloomy velvet underground inspired gloomy, spacey music..doesn't sound dated in the 80's at all..best recording other than days of wine and roses for this band

5 out of 5 stars It's A Sure Thing, Baby!.......2000-10-01

Andrea Enthal's and KPFK radio's series of late-night live performances (featuring the Minutemen, Dream Syndicate, Irritators, & many more) gave a unique and thrilling snapshot of L.A. alternative bands in the early 80s. The Dream Syndicate set is a prime example, showing that a rediscovery of the 60s doesn't have to lead to psychedelic revival cliche.

The set builds up with a slow burn, so the available sound samples don't really show what you have in store. But by the last four tracks Carl Prekoda's searing guitar aka feedback dynamo is in full effect. Worth it alone for the version of When You Smile. Plus you get sneak previews of John Coltrane Stereo Blues ("Open Hour") and The Days of Wine and Roses.

The recording quality is fairly lo-fi, so be forewarned. On the other hand, you get plenty of Steve Wynn's relaxed joking with audience members, even the ones who have to be carried out drunk.

3 out of 5 stars Those Days are Gone.......2000-03-29

Firstly, thanks to KPFK for bringing us a chance to listen to Dream Syndicate live. But, like so many other time travels, this one leads to disappointment. The edgy, raw, crisp, feedback-laden zone we were transported to on the original "Days of Wine and Roses" LP, certainly is nowhere to be found here. where is Karl Precoda's sloppy, instinctive, savant playing? Steve Wynn may have the franchise, but magic is not for sale here. Leave my hot dog in the wrapper - I'll warm it over myself, thanks.

The Dream Syndicate's sterling reputation at college radio (in the halcyon indie-rock days before the "alt" prefix was co-opted as corporate marketing gimmick) made them one of the '80s most respected and influential young American rock bands. This new, double-disc edition of the band's live statement (now restored to its original length and running order) recorded gloriously direct-to-two-track DAT at the venerable Hollywood Blvd. dive Raji's, sheds new light on a project that's long been misinterpreted as the band's swan song due to faulty labeling on the original release (it was recorded in Jan. of '88, prior to Ghost Stories). Indeed, fueled by Paul Cutler's careening, aggro-psych-out guitar and songwriter/frontman Steve Wynn's fervent, nasal-shred vocals, it's about as elegiac as a frayed high tension wire. The set list leans wisely on material from the band's rough-hewn jewel of a debut, The Days of Wine and Roses, and its follow-up, Medicine Show, in a riveting performance that pays ample tribute to the manic, ever-evolving sonic inspiration of the Velvet Underground and Crazy Horse. But as the hypnotic abandon of its Dylan-meets-Hendrix cover of "All Along the Watchtower" segues nervously into "Tell Me When Its Over," it's clear this is also a garage band powerhouse whose roots go considerably deeper--and whose legacy still resonates with every ringing, feedback drenched explosion of guitar captured here. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Originally issued as a limited edition CD, this long out of print classic live album has been expanded to include the complete unedited concert on two CDs for the low price of $16.98. Hear The Dream Syndicate live at their peak with Steve Wynn, Paul B. Cutler, Mark Walton and Dennis Duck. Produced by legendary Neil Young collaborator Elliott Mazer, the performance also includes special guest Peter Case on harmonica. The Complete Live At Raji's adds songs left off the original release, plenty of previously cut between-song banter, rare live photos, and liner notes by Dream Syndicate archivalist Pat Thomas.

5 out of 5 stars rocks hard and mighty.......2004-07-31

Amazing sounding reissue of classic live blast. Really, this is one of the best sounding live albums I have ever heard. The set list is fantastic, the audience in prime form, and the band can't get more committed. Searing solos, bouncing feedback, a rhythm section that will tear your heart out: this has it all. It makes you sad thinking that this group of individuals may never record again. Steve Wynn's solo stuff is OK, but this document is an essential part of any true understanding of american popular music. Most of the songs come from either "Days of Wine and Roses" or "Medicine Show" and the sonic assult of "Halloween" is quite possibly the best redition EVER. I can't recommend this enough. I can't stop listening to it even though I've heard all the songs a thousand times. It's the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute stonker!.......2004-07-10

One of the very few bands who ever produced a vital live album. This is an incendiary piece of work - a great band captured at the peak of their powers. In the studio the Dream Syndicate could sometimes sound restrained and mannered, here the hounds of hell rip havoc all over the shop. This is a vital recording of one of the great American bands of the 1980's. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Real Patriotism Through Extraordinary Music.......2003-02-26

In the wake of considerable ersatz patriotism following 9/11, I have become sensitive to what I consider to be acts of true patriotism. Recording these very American songs, with a tremendous commitment to showing them in their most pristine and revealing light, is one of those, perhaps small, acts of patriotism that are profound in their ability to show the best of the United States of America. I used the word "commitment" in the above sentence because that is the underlying theme of this entire venture. Ms. Danton sings with amazing clarity of voice and tremendous enthusiasm for the material. Each of these songs is a minor masterpiece, as presented, and the whole album is captivating and deeply compelling. These songs stay with you. I find myself humming the melodies for days. They are, indeed, songs many of us grew up with or have heard for years. So there you have it: 5 stars for the material, 5 stars for the performances and 5 stars for the recording quality.
